Clermont County veterans recognized New Richmond Elementary hosts breakfast for vets BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Dozens of veterans gathered at New Richmond Elementary Nov. 7 to begin Veterans Awareness Week in Clermont County. The elementary school hosted a breakfast and short program to honor veterans, and students were able to hear from World War II veterans, Vietnam War veterans, Korean War veterans and more. “I think it’s great,” Bill Rowan, a Vietnam War veteran from New Richmond said. “It shows us that they teach the kids to honor the veterans.” Students at the elementary school created patriotic drawings that were displayed in the cafeteria, many thanking the veterans for their service, and some students were also involved in the ceremony. Thomas Moore, a sixth grader, and Archer Maguire, a fifth grader, both read poems to the veterans that helped describe what they do for the country. The fifth and sixth grade chorus also performed

songs during the program. “Our veterans were more than just soldiers, they were and still are heroes,” Maguire read from the poem “Heroes,” by Jared Jenkins. Other students were able to reflect on veterans day as they ate breakfast with parents and grandparents who served, and are serving the country. Andrew Baldrick, a 9-yearold, who came to the breakfast with his grandfather Bob Sons, a Vietnam veteran, said veterans day means that people should honor those who risked their lives for us. He said coming with his grandfather makes him to think about everything he did for the country. Kylie Cornette, an 8-yearold, also came to the breakfast with her grandfather Lindsey Kirby, a Korean War veteran. She said the breakfast is fun, but also it is a time to celebrate the veterans. The breakfast was the first of three this week to honor the veterans at New Richmond elementary schools. Breakfasts were scheduled at Locust Corner Elementary Nov. 9 and Monroe

Clermont DD hosts recognition dinner Ausman defeats

BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

The Clermont County Board of Developmental Disabilities hosted a recognition dinner Nov. 2 to honor

several award winners for their dedication to improving the lives of those with disabilities. “It’s important because there are so many people who support what we do,” Sharon Woodrow, superintendent of Clermont DD, said about why they hosted the dinner. Woodrow said organizers decided to host a dinner event this year so they could bring everyone together and thank them for their support.

She said award winners are nominated by their peers, and a committee of judges outside the county selects the winners each year. “They were selected because something rang a bell,” Woodrow said. “And pulled at a heart string of one of the judges.” Clermont DD presented 10 awards to members of the community at the dinner for their separate contributions to the organization.

Shrope Home, a familyoperated boarding home, received the Provider of the Year Award for the support they provide to individuals with developmental disabilities. The award for SelfAdvocate of the year was given to Amy Jones, who has been involved with the Clermont DD program for years. Jones has grown See Dinner, Page 4

Bushman is new Batavia Trustee Dowdney keeps his seat on board BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Voters chose Jim Bushman over incumbent Lee Cornett for Batavia Township Trustee Nov. 8., and incumbent Bill Dowdney defeated his opponent Eddie Miller to hold onto his seat on the board.

Bushman earned 54.62 percent of the votes while Cornett earned 45.38 percent and Dowdney earned 52.77 percent while Miller earned 47.23 percent of votes. “It feels very satisfying that the people of the township trust in me to oversee the township,” Bushman said about being elected. Bushman said he has 12 years previous experience as a Batavia Township Trustee and several neighbors and residents encouraged him to run again this year. Bushman grew up in New

Richmond, served in the Army and then began working at Cincinnati Milacron, where he became a supervisor. He has also served on both the Batavia Local School District Board of Education and the Great Oaks Board of Directors. “I was able to direct them, be cost efficient and still manage to put out a good product,” Bushman said about his work experience. “I took that into being a trustee.” Bushman said prior to the election that he would work to maintain services in the town-

New mayor hopes to improve village BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Bethel residents chose Alan Ausman as their new mayor Nov. 8 in a race between two council members. “I appreciate their confidence and I thank them for trusting me for the job,” Ausman said about voters. Ausman earned 66.73 percent of votes, while his opponent, Rus Whitley, earned 33.27 percent of votes. “I was relieved,” Ausman said about winning the election. “And kind of surprised by the margin of victory. I am just kind of humbled by it to be quite honest.” Ausman grew up in the Bethel area and graduated from Williamsburg High School. He moved into the village and said he loved being a part of the close-knit community. He became involved with the youth committee and youth council at Bethel United Methodist Church and continues to work as a window cleaner in the area.

After serving on village council for four years, Ausman said he decided to run for mayor this year because he wants to see the town grow grass and get back to the kind of town he grew up in as a kid. Now that he has been elected, he said he will work to improve the look of the village, especially the area around Plane Street. But instead of spending money to do this Ausman said he would like to explore other options. “I would like to see an aggressive grant writing program,” Ausman said about coming into office. “I would like to see us get the type of grants other villages and townships have gotten.” He said keeping the village on track financially is important, and continuing to chip away at the village deficit is one of his goals. “I am going to start thinking about how I want to get started and what is the best way to

He said he would also like to take a closer look at the 32 corridor study, as it could help open up the corridor and make it more business-friendly for the area. “I think we need to come to closure on the study,” Bushman said before the election. “We need to get to doing some work.” While Bushman doesn’t see any serious issues or problems facing the township currently,

Clermont County 4-H will host its annual Turkey Food Drive Nov. 18 and is still looking for food donations to complement 200 turkeys donated by the River Valley Long Beards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. The food drive benefits families who are in need of a Thanksgiving dinner, and Clermont County 4-H partnered with the Clermont County Farm Bureau as well as the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati to help organize the event and find deserving families to receive meals.

“It's great that all these people come together for a common cause,” Scott Cangro, 4H youth development assistant, said about the food drive. Cangro said the drive provides a Thanksgiving meal to 200 families each year, and it also give the children involved in 4-H an opportunity to participate in a great cause. “I rely on my clubs to raise as many canned goods as they can,” Cangro said. In addition to the turkey, families receive a slew of other items needed for a Thanksgiving feast. Cangro said local 4-H club members are involved in collecting these items and also

help out at the food drive. “It's nice to see youth participating in this community service,” Cangro said. Cangro said 4-H is still looking for food donations to fill Thanksgiving baskets including canned cranberry sauce, instant potatoes, canned corn, canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup, french fried onions, stuffing mix, canned gravy, cake and cake frosting. He said cash donations are accepted as well. Those interested in donating items can drop them off at the Clermont County Extension Office before 4 p.m. Nov. 16. Once items have been collected and organized, they will be given away at the extension office from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18. For more information about the food drive call (513) 7327070.

was selected as the Business Partner of the year. Denise and Mark Strimple were named Foster Parents of the Year for their dedication to Clermont DD, and have served as foster parents in the county for more than 20 years. They have nurtured many babies, toddlers and even entire families. And while all the award winners are “friends” of Clermont DD, Zach Malec earned the Friends of DD Award this year for his donation to the organization. Malec, who is working toward his Eagle Scout certification, built a shelter house for Clermont DD as a project for his Boy Scout troop. “When I finished it felt like a strong accomplishment,” Malec said about the project. “From what I've heard it has been beneficial.” The final award of the night was the Triumph Award. Rhonda Bocks, a Habilitation Technician at the Donald A. Collins Habilitation Center, received the Triumph Award for her day-to-day efforts to support individuals in the Intensive Training Program. “She came in early before work and stayed late until the job was completed,” Woodrow said. “Rhonda is a strong advocate for individuals served in the Adult Services program and has no tolerance for anyone who says they 'can't' strive to meet goals.” For more information about Clermont DD visit www.clermontdd.org.

Some people buy investments here and there, now and then. Others open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), put some money in it, and then forget about it. But this type of haphazard investment behavior can lead to haphazard results. On the other hand, you’ve got five good reasons for creating and following a comprehensive, long-term investment strategy. • Reason No. 1: You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. For most people, building resources for retirement is the most powerful reason to invest. As a key part of your investment strategy, you’ll want to consider

investments that have growth potential. The proportion of your portfolio devoted to these growth investments should be based on your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. • Reason No. 2: You need to stay ahead of inflation. Over the past few years, we’ve experienced relatively low inflation, but over time, even a low inflation rate can dramatically erode the value of your savings and investments. That's why you may want to consider investments that provide the potential for rising income. • Reason No. 3: You need to help manage the unexpected. You can’t predict what

life will hold in store for you. To cope with unexpected costs, such as a major car repair or a new furnace, you’ll need to create an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses so that you won’t be forced to dip into your long-term investments. And to deal with other major uncertainties of life, you’ll need adequate life and disability insurance. • Reason No. 4: You need resources for major life events. Your retirement may eventually require the bulk of your financial resources — but it’s not the only milestone for which you’ll need to save and invest. You may need a

down payment on a house, or you may someday even want to purchase a vacation home. And if you have children or grandchildren, you may want to help them pay for college. • Reason No. 5: You’ll want to keep in mind investment-related taxes. Taxes, like inflation, can eat into your investment returns. You’ll need to evaluate whether you can benefit from tax-advantaged investments and retirement accounts, such as traditional or Roth IRAs. So there you have it: five good reasons to adhere to a unified investment strategy that’s tailored to your situation. This type of “blueprint” may not sound glamorous, and it’s certainly not a “get rich quick” formula, but it

will help you stay on track toward your important financial goals. Article submitted by S. Christian Wilks, an Investment Representative with Edward Jones, Milford.

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER THE BOOKWORM SEZ

There was no way you were sitting down. As soon as you heard those four notes – just four beats – your feet were itching to move. You were up and on the dance floor quick, not caring that you didn’t have a partner. With songs like that, you’d dance alone but not for long: other people’s feet were itching, too, and you knew you wouldn’t be by yourself but for a minute. Remember the first time you heard Michael Jackson sing? No matter what your age, whether it was “I Want You Back” or clips from “This Is It,” your musical tastes changed right there. In the new book “Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson” by Joseph Vogel, you’ll read about what went into those songs and everything in between. Even in his early years as a performer, friends could see the drive that young Michael Jackson possessed. At age eight, he studied the moves of James Brown and Elvis Presley. At Motown, he was heavily influenced by Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and Diana Ross. Stevie Wonder recalled that Jackson had a deep curiosity about how the blind singer “worked.” Jackson, they said, watched everything “like a hawk.” Aside from the guidance he got from contemporary singers and songwriters, Jackson was also inspired by actors, classical music, other dancers, and by books. Michael Jackson, says Vogel, was a voracious reader and owned a massive library. In the studio, Jackson was a perfectionist – a habit he said he’d learned from Barry Gordie, Jr. – and often astounded fellow musicians by singing, bar by bar, the

entire arrangement of a song. He was self-conscious, often danced as he sang, and sometimes sang with the lights off. Working with Jackson was fun, said one musician, like musical freedom. In this book, you’ll learn the stories behind each individual album that Jackson released in his adult career. You’ll read about how he met Quincy Jones and Lisa Marie Presley, his (possible) inspiration for “She’s Out of My Life,” why “Thriller” almost wasn’t released, and lots more. Much has been written about Michael Jackson over the years and, if you’ve watched any TV lately, you might have heard things about him that you wish you didn’t know. But reading “Man in the Music” will pull your focus back on the legacy and away from the lunacy. In this book, author Joseph Vogel gives readers more insight and less emotion about

Youth deer-gun hunting season set for Nov. 19-20

HELP US HELP A WAITING CHILD Pressley Ridge is currently seeking skilled parents to provide food, shelter, supervision, and structure to children, ages 12-17. These children are waiting to be a part of your family and want to live in a stable home with parents who appreciate the difficulties of childhood. Pressley Ridge provides training, lots of support, and $55 stipend per day.

Ohio's youth deer-gun hunting season will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19-20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. The youth deer-gun season is open statewide to hunters 17 years old and younger. Plugged shotguns using slugs, muzzleloaders .38 caliber and larger, handguns .357 caliber or larger, and bows are legal. All participants must wear hunter orange, possess a valid Ohio hunting license and a $12 youth-deer permit, and must be accompanied by a nonhunting adult in the field. Last year youth hunters killed 8,445 deer during the two-day season. The Division of Wildlife anticipates more than 60,000 youth hunters will participate in the upcoming hunt. Youth hunters can com-

memorate their achievement with a First Harvest certificate available at wildohio.com. Upload a photo and type in the youth hunter’s information and a certificate will be e-mailed within a few days to you for print. Hunters can also share photos of their success in the field online by visiting wildohio.com and clicking on Photo Gallery. The photo submission process is easy and posted photos may be emailed to a friend. All other regularly scheduled hunting seasons will continue during the two-day youth season. However, other hunters, including deerarchery hunters, are required to wear hunter orange during this period. This year, Ohio's deer-gun season runs Nov. 28 through Dec. 4, and the weekend of Dec. 17-18. Details regarding

Michael Jackson. Vogel shows that Jackson was driven and cunning and that nearly everything he did was with precision, including the births of his children and his planned comeback. Though it would have been nice if Vogel had included more downfalls, I found this book, overall, to be interesting, eye-opening, and relatively well-balanced. I think that, if you’re a fan of MJ’s music or if you just want to know more about the man behind the headlines, then this book will be a thriller. For you, “Man in the Music” is one to sit down with.

Ohio's various hunting seasons, including those exclusively for young hunters, can be found in the 2011-12 Ohio Hunting Regulations or by visiting wildohio.com. The 2011-2012 licenses are not printed on weatherproof paper. Sportsmen and women need to protect their licenses and permits from the elements by carrying them in a protective pouch or wallet. Youth hunters that want to donate venison to the needy can do so at no cost. The Division of Wildlife is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. All hunters who donate their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as funding for the effort lasts.
