Korean War Memorial unveiled Large crowd gathers to remember the ‘forgotten war’ BY BRETT ROLLER

Batavia trustees discuss Christian Cemetery Mt. Holly Christian Church to expand its building

The 2010 Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Clermont County Courthouse was special this year. It featured the dedication ceremony of the brand new Korean War memorial in front of the courthouse. More than 30 Korean War veterans were given the seats of honor surrounded by a large crowd. The keynote address was given by Korean War veteran Norm Nadow. He gave a history of the Korean War and the events that led up to the fighting from its occupation by China from 1914 to 1945 to the signing of the cease-fire armistice in 1953. He said the American armed forces were ill-prepared for war when the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel on June 25, 1950 due to defense department budget cuts after World War II but President Harry Truman insisted that communism must not be allowed to spread to South Korea or it would become a template for the spread of communism throughout the world. “Many say we didn’t win that war,” Nadow said. “But we did what Truman said had to be done. We stopped the commies in their tracks.” In addition to halting the spread of communism, Nadow

The Batavia Township trustees are asking Mt. Holly Christian Church on state Route 125 to consider taking possession of the inactive cemetery, called Christian Cemetery, behind its property. The cemetery once belonged to the Mt. Holly Christian Chapel which was located at the same site when it dissolved in 1976. At that time the township took possession of the cemetery and an easement that would allow the township access to the east side of the church. Batavia Township administrator Rex Parsons said state law requires the township to take possession of a cemetery they know has been abandoned. The current church, Mt. Holly Christian Church, now wants to expand its building to the east over top of the easement and to the north into a portion of the cemetery that is unused and outside of a fence that surrounds the gravestones. Parsons said the township regularly mows the cemetery, though no burials have taken place during his

said the Korean War proved to America the importance of maintaining a standing military that is ready to react to any situation. “Never again have we allowed the American military to be unprepared,” Nadow said. “We will never forget their bravery and sacrifice

both in Korea and when they came home.” He concluded his speech by leading the crowd in singing “God Bless America.” Korea and Vietnam Veteran Bob Derr played an instrumental role in getting the project under way and getting the memorial in place at the court-

house. He said Korea was a difficult war because it was fought by young men, many of whom had lost fathers or brothers in World War II or would go on to serve in Vietnam. When they returned home there was no V-K day, there were no parades. Korea became known as the forgot-

Passersby save family as fire destroys home No injuries reported in two alarm blaze in Amelia BY BRETT ROLLER Sun staff

An Amelia family owes their lives to passersby on their way to church Sunday when their home went up in flames. Local media reports have identified one man as Mark Jackson, the other rescuer has not been named. Union Township Fire Chief Stan Deimling said Jackson was walking past the home at 28 East Main Street when he saw the smoke and flames and

began knocking on windows with the help of another individual. Every member of the family of eight made it out of the home without injuries. “The Lord sends out guardian angels. He sent us one yesterday,” Harry Bozett, uncle and next door neighbor to the family said Monday night. The residents included Bozett’s nephew James Stewart, 33, and a five-yearold girl, a five-year-old boy, a four-year-old girl, a three-

year-old girl, a two-day-old baby girl, a 17-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman. Deimling said the family was very fortunate because the home had no working smoke detectors. “Normally if you’re sleeping without smoke detectors you breathe in a couple breaths of that toxic air and smoke and never wake up,” Deimling said. The Union Township Fire Department was called to the scene of the two alarm fire at about 8:45 a.m. Deimling said when they arrived at the scene there was heavy smoke pouring out and flames were See Fire, Page 2

A report on Williamsburg’s financial audit was presented to council at its Nov. 10 meeting by Mike Murray, chairman of the finance committee. “The financial audit was performed by the Von Lehman CPA advisors. I am very pleased with the audit,” Murray said. Von Lehman has handled the village’s audits for the past two years. This year will be their last due to the policy mandated by the state examiners, Murray said. “The state examiners don’t want you to get to friendly with your CPA firm, and I can understand that. We can hire them again in three more years, which I would recommend to council,” he said. Murray read to council at the meeting from the letter to

the village from Von Lehman. “In our opinion the financial statements referred to above presents fairly in all material respects, the combined fund cash balance and reserves for encumbrances of Village of Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio as of December 31st 2008 and 2007 and is combined cash receipts and disbursements of these years then ended on the accounting basis note one describes.” For those curious as to what note one means, Murray explained it is the firm’s description of the basis of accounting, and that they follow what the auditor of State permits similar to cash receipts and recognizes receipts when received in cash rather than when earned. “Simply put, the village operates on a cash basis not

an earned basis. This is because we do not have the revenue that larger cities do. Therefore we are permitted to operate this way. Most small cities and villages operate this way,” he said. “On the fixed assets, we have fixed asset records. However ours are in multiple locations. They are in the appropriation ledger where we can find the date of purchase and what we paid for them,” he said. The only request indicated within the audit, is that the village set up a system where all assets are recorded in the same location. “I have been given a template by them (Von Lehman) that I will be working on that so it will show the fixed assets in one place as far as record keeping is concerned. When we buy something it is expensed and not depreciated. We just need to know

Cemetery: Church to expand Continued from page 1 tenure. The township current accesses the cemetery through the church’s parking lot. He said there are no records on any of the graves in the cemetery and the pastor of the Mt. Holly Christian Church said the church has very poor records as well. There is some confusion in regards to the deed to the cemetery as well. Parsons said the property was transferred to the township but the deed was never recorded. While the deed of record still lists Mt. Holly Christian Chapel as the owner, it also

has the township listed. “In the past, in the politics of the 70’s they did a lot of things because maybe belonged to a church up there or something,” trustee Archie Wilson said. Wilson suggested asking the church to take control of the cemetery. “I so think what he (Archie) says is a good point, you could ask them ‘hey, would you like to have it all,” trustee Lee Cornett said. Zoning administrator Denise Kelley said the church would need to apply for a zoning variance if the township maintained control of the cemetery because the

addition to their building would not meet the setback requirements for property lines. “The advantage here, if we did give it to them...there will be no property line and we won’t have to worry about that,” Kelley said. She said they may still need a variance on the east side depending on their plans. Trustee Jim Sauls said the trustees are not opposed to the church adding on to its building, but if the church took possession of the cemetery it would benefit them as well as the township.

He also thanked Clermont County facilities manager Wade Grabowski for his efforts in preparing the site. Derr said the memorial was designed by Bob Groh of Beeco Monuments. where it is, when we bought it, how much it cost. Just to make sure so its physical whereabouts can be verified. The state just wants the assets in the prescribed format so that is what we will do,” he said.

Council members and the mayor were pleased with the audit. “Overall,” Mayor Lefker said, “I am very pleased. It was a very good audit.” Also at the council meeting village administrator Patti

Bates wanted to remind everyone that the Williamsburg Village Christmas Walk will be held from 5 - 9 p.m. Dec. 3. The American Legion is still looking for volunteers to set up model trains at their hall.

Fire: Home destroyed in Amelia Continued from page 1 spreading quickly. “The home is about 150 years old and it’s of what we call balloon construction,” Deimling said. “There’s no fire stops between floors so the empty spaces between the walls just act like chimneys.” He said the fire will shoot up the inside of the walls and into the attic where it will quickly spread. He said the cause will not be determined for several days but the fire has been ruled accidental and it started in a utility room in a first floor addition. The damage is estimated at $75,000 for the home and contents and Deimling said the building is a total loss. The family was in the care of the American Red Cross Sunday night. Stewart’s father Fred Stewart is accepting donations on behalf of the family at his store, Stewart’s Shoe Repair, at 7B West Main Street, Amelia. Bozett said Grace and Mercy Outreach Inc. is also accepting donations at their location at 17 West Main Street, Amelia. Bozett said the family only made it out of the house with the clothes they were wearing and they need winter clothing as well as newborn diapers. “We were just so amazed by the outpouring of people in the Village of Amelia yesterday just stopping by and bringing stuff,” Bozett said. UTFD assistant chief Jeff Jackson told the Amelia Village Council Monday night that the firefighters immediately went into the building and aggressively attacked the fire until the fire in the attic made the roof unstable.

“We had to evacuate all of our personnel...and used a defensive attack from the outside,” Jackson said. UTFD was assisted by Central Joint Fire and EMS Department, Monroe Township Fire Department, and Pierce Township Fire Department. The fire was knocked down in about an hour and a half and crews stayed on the

scene until about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Amelia Police Chief Jeff Sucher said he assisted Officer Shane Olson during the fire as they worked to direct traffic. Main Street was closed for a total of four hours Sunday. Deimling said when they returned Monday morning to board up the home a smoldering mattress in a rear bedroom had to be doused.

Thanksgiving is a good time to be thankful for those charitable, educational and religious groups that provide your community with valuable services. And now may be a good time to consider supporting these groups because, if you contribute before the year is over, you may “do well by doing good” through valuable tax deductions. To illustrate the benefit of these deductions, let’s assume you’re in the 25% tax bracket. If you give $100 to a qualified charity, you can deduct $100 (with a tax benefit of $25) when you file your taxes. Consequently, the real cost of

B R O A D S H E E T

C L A S S I F I E D S

your donation is just $75 ($100 minus the $25 tax savings). As you consider your charitable gifts, keep the following points in mind: • You must donate — not just pledge. You can make a pledge to donate, but the amount is not deductible until you actually pay it. • You must contribute to a qualified charitable group. For your gift to be deductible, it must go to a qualified taxexempt organization — either a religious group or a group that has received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. If you’re unsure if the group you want

to support is tax-exempt, just ask. • You must itemize. To claim a charitable deduction, you must itemize deductions on your taxes. Thus far, we’ve talked only about cash gifts. But you may have other financial assets, such as stocks, that you can give to charitable groups, and these gifts also can earn you tax benefits. For example, suppose you give $500 worth of stock in XYZ Company to a charitable group. If you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $125 when you file your taxes for 2010. But by donating the XYZ stock, you

avoid paying any capital gains taxes you might have incurred if you had sold the stock yourself. Making charitable gifts now may help you reduce the size of your estate and potentially lower any future estate tax burden on your heirs. Right now, federal estate tax laws are in flux, but it’s possible that, one day, your estate might be large enough to generate estate taxes. If you wanted to formalize your charitable gifts and help your estate planning, you might consider establishing a charitable remainder trust. Under such an arrangement, you’d place

some assets, such as stocks or real estate, in a trust, which could then use these assets to pay you a lifetime income stream. When you establish the trust, you may be able to receive a tax deduction based on the charitable group’s “remainder interest” — the amount the charity is likely to ultimately receive. (This figure is determined by an IRS formula.) Upon your death, the trust would relinquish the remaining assets to the charitable organization you’ve named. Keep in mind, though, that this type of trust can be complex. To establish one, you’ll need to work with your

tax and legal advisors. In any case, be generous during this season of giving. You’ll be helping a charitable group accomplish its worthy goals — and you may be helping yourself when tax time arrives. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. Please consult your attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

Enjoy fried treats occasionally any person with diabetes is to adopt a balanced, healthful diet designed to help control blood sugar and maintain a healthy weight. Any nutritious diet includes good portions of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy with a splash of healthful oil. Indulge in high-fat, high-calorie, low-nutrient treats only occasionally. In addition, the American Dietetic Association recommends that people with diabetes eat meals and snacks at regular, planned times, and to consume about the same amount of food at each meal or snack. Following such a plan will help keep blood sugar levels as stable as possible. For help in creating a meal plan that works for you, visit the American Diabetes Association website at http://www.diabetes.org; choose the “Food and Fitness” tab. It has information on planning meals, counting carbohydrates, consuming normal portion sizes, learning about the glycemic index and how it can be used to control blood sugar, and more. There’s plenty of good information available to help you and your wife learn more. But it’s always also helpful to work with a registered dietitian for those out-of-box type of questions ... like fitting fried green tomatoes into a healthy diet. My wife has type 2 diabetes and has to control her intake of carbs. But she loves fried green tomatoes and could eat them six times a week. Is there a substitute for regular flour she can use?

B R O A D S H E E T

Actually, the amount of carbohydrate in fried green tomatoes may surprise you. Each serving has about 13 grams, which counts as one carbohydrate exchange in most plans; your wife just needs to take that into account as she enjoys one of her favorite foods. However, dietitians would probably encourage her to limit her intake — not because of the carbohydrates involved, but because of the fat and calories in fried green tomatoes. Frying any type of food adds a significant amount of calories from fat. Because people with type 2 diabetes are at much greater risk for obesity and heart disease, eating fried foods six times a week probably isn’t a good plan. On the (hopefully) rare occasion when she does indulge, your wife might consider making the treat with whole-wheat flour or wholegrain cornmeal. Opting to use the whole grain contributes fiber to the diet and helps the body absorb carbohydrates more slowly, at a rate that helps control blood sugar. Overall, though, the message for

Now that we’ve had frost it’s time to put our garden and landscape to bed for the winter. Once frost kills their foliage, your plants are finished storing food and won’t need their leaves any more until spring. While you still have nice weather to work outside, here are some things you’ll want to do: Evergreen shrubs like holly, boxwood and yew can be trimmed now. This is also a good time to prune trees. Watch this column in the next few weeks for tips on this. If you like a neat garden, clip back the brown foliage on your perennials and rake the leaves out from around your shrubs. If you find some weeds still growing; pull them out. Clip the spent blooms off your hardy mums, leaving the green foliage to help them get established and protect the roots from winter wind. This is a good time to scatter fertilizer on the bare soil around plants. We recommend slowrelease, multi-mineral fertilizers like Espoma Plant Tone® and Holly Tone®, which will not burn plants. You may want to wait until spring to clip back your perennials because they are important resources for wildlife. Many butterflies and moths lay eggs in the shelter of dead foliage, and ground birds like finches, juncos, chickadees, cardinals, nuthatches, sparrows and redbreasted woodpeckers depend on seed heads for winter forage. Dead blooms of coneflower, black-eyed Susan and many other popular perennials attract winter birds. Another reason not to cut down dormant perennials is that their foliage provides insulation from the cold, protecting them from winter kill. Tender perennials such as Mums, Asters, Ferns, Lavender, Russian Sage, and

oriental Poppies will survive extreme cold much better if left uncut. Perennials that remain green through the winter like creeping Phlox, Liriope, Christmas Fern and Hellebore are better left alone until spring. Aside from neatness there are reasons you may want to clean up parts of your garden now instead of waiting until spring. Dead foliage can harbor diseases or insects, like mildew on Bee Balm, botrytis on Peonies, or borers on bearded Iris. We recommend raking large leaves like maples or sycamore because they can mat down and hold water, causing crown rot on perennials. Cleaning out dead leaves and foliage also discourages rodents from nesting and devouring your plants during the winter months. Many ornamental grasses look good all winter and can be left alone until spring. They will give you winter interest and privacy screening if left uncut. If they are brittle and make a mess during the winter, you can cut them down to about six inches tall. Be sure to fertilize the center of the clump, since grasses can die out in the center if they run out of food. Plant Tone® or composted manure work best for grasses. Most roses are best left alone right now, since freshly cut tips will die back during winter and will need trimming again in spring. We recommend pruning after new growth buds start to open, except for climbing roses which should only be pruned after they bloom. We recommend cleaning leaf litter from around roses since it can harbor disease, but some clean
