Bethel committee decides to eliminate parking meters Meters to be removed from the village’s business district BY BRETT ROLLER Sun staff

Visitors to Bethel businesses and apartment residents on Plane Street can keep their change in their pocket following a decision by the Bethel

safety committee to eliminate all 42 parking meters in the business district. Parking on Plane Street will now be free, however, it will be limited to two hours during business hours. The move has been under

discussion for some time. At an August 2010 Bethel Village Council meeting safety committee chair Russ Whitely said six of the meters were broken at that time. The meters were not considered a significant income for the village. A report at the August meeting stated from Jan. 1, 2010 to July 31, 2010 the village had received $362.62 from the

meters. The income averaged out to seven cents a day per meter. Whitely said all but one of the business owners in the metered portion of Plane Street were in favor of having them removed. The decision was announced at the Monday, March 14 village council meeting. The meters will be

removed and the holes filled as necessary. Also at the March 14 meeting the council approved the submittal of a request to the Burke Trust to purchase 80 chairs for the Grant Memorial Building. The chairs will be similar to those currently used in the Bethel Community Center, however instead of a maroon color they will be

blue. Janice Ireton, council’s Burke Trust committee representative, said she was able to find the chairs on sale for $2,037.60 in blue only. Village administrator Travis Dotson said the blue chairs were about 50 percent cheaper due to a surplus at a particular seller. Ireton said in addition See Bethel, Page 2

Girl Scouts submit petition to school board Students push for eco-friendly lunch trays in school cafeterias Sun staff

Local Girl Scout Troop 41280 made an appeal to the Bethel-Tate Board of Education to become more environmentally friendly at the Board’s Tuesday, March 15 meeting. The girls organized a petition which was signed by Bethel-Tate students asking the school district to implement reusable lunch trays at every school in the district. At girl scout camp last summer the troop learned about the Great Garbage Patch, a collection of garbage floating in the ocean half way between San Francisco and Hawaii. In response the girls decided to try to remove styrofoam

lunch trays from the district, which can take several hundred years to break down. Recently the district began using biodegradable lunch trays, however the girls scouts said the trays are taken to a landfill where they do not have the right environment to break down. The girls asked the board to consider a more “environmentally friendly” alternative and presented them with research supporting their request. Superintendent Jim Smith said the board would present the research to the food service director and discuss options with her. “I’m very impressed with all the research you’ve done on this,” Board President Pam Sandker said.

Soldiers recognized by county BY BRETT ROLLER Sun staff

Private Casey Jones was one of two local soldiers honored at the Clermont County Commissioners meeting Wednesday, March 16 while he was home to attend the funeral of his best friend, Private Tony Castelluccio, who died in a car crash in Georgia earlier this month. Army Specialist Buck Campbell was recognized for his service in Afghanistan at the meeting. Campbell and Jones were recognized by the Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission, Clermont County Sheriff A.J. “Tim” Rodenberg, Congresswoman Jean Schmidt’s office, and the Thank You Foundation. Schools across Ohio and in Clermont County have been anticipating significant state funding cuts this July and while the details remain fuzzy Governor John Kasich released his budget recommendations Tuesday, March 15. The Governor’s recommendation for the Department of Education is an 11.5 percent cut for all funds in 2012 and a 4.9 percent cut in all funds for 2013. The percentages are not likely to represent the exact percentage of funding cuts Clermont County schools will receive. Both the governor and General Assembly leaders have said they will not support across the board cuts and the 2010 and 2011 budget based funding on district

income levels. Kasich’s recommendation does include a 1.4 percent increase in transportation funding two years after a tightening of school bus emissions regulations caused a significant price increase for new buses. Administrative and program support would see an 8.7 percent cut in the governor’s budget. The evidence based model put in place under former Governor Ted Strickland in 2009 has been abandoned by Governor Kasich, though no changes are expected in early childhood education funding. The governor’s recommendations include merit based raises for teachers as determined by student achievement. The budget proposal also promotes sharing of resources See Funding, Page 2

Day and residential camps serve children and adults with disabilities

Stepping Stones Center for children and adults with disabilities is opening its summer day and residential camp season with five new camp fairs to help families and camp staff get acquainted and answer questions about everything from activities to on-site nurses to how to fill out the application. “We are inviting families to tour the camp facilities and meet the staff who will be working with your child or family member,” said Tabbie Ross, director of leisure and recreation services for the 47year-old United Way partner agency. “We are committed to providing the best possible service and the best way we can do that is to know your child before he or she walks through our door,” Ross said. Attendance at a camp fair

will be mandatory for firsttime campers, said Ross. Returning camp families and those who just want to learn more before making a camp decision are encouraged to attend as well. New families must reserve a place at the camp fair to assure the staff who will work with the child can meet the potential camper and family. Stepping Stones Center was founded in 1963 as Greater Cincinnati’s first summer camp for children with disabilities. Today Stepping Stones offers the region’s largest summer camp program for children and adults with disabilities, including day camps for ages 6 to 22 at the Indian Hill and Batavia locations and overnight camps for children and adults at the Batavia location. The camps include swimming, boating, fishing, art, music, nature, games, and activities. Summer day and residential camps run from mid June through mid August. Ervin presented Jones with a check to cover a portion of his airline ticket. “We wanted to cover some of your expenses to show how much we appreciate your service and to let you know our prayers are with you,” Ervin said. The outpouring of support for Jones was a little overwhelming and certainly unexpected, he said. “I want to thank everyone for their support, I didn’t expect all this,” Jones said. “I didn’t know it was possible.”

Jones said he joined the Army as part of his plan to become a police officer and after some persuasion he talked Castelluccio into joining as well, but once he was in Jones said Castelluccio loved the service. “I never saw him more happy about anything,” Jones said. Thank You Foundation representative Sam Arnold is a retired Marine. He provided Jones with advice to keep him safe while he serves as a fire support specialist in Afghanistan. “Listen to your squad leader and make damn sure that weapon is always full,” Arnold said.

Campbell recently return from serving as an infantryman in the remote Paktika province and the Ghazni Province in Afghanistan. He thanked the county for its out pouring of support while he is away from home, and especially for the many packages he shared with his fellow soldiers. “Some don’t get packages and sharing is just the thing to do,” Campbell said. He is currently stationed in Fort Campbell, Ky.

Consortia to provide funding for the High Schools That Work program and Tech Prep grants. The Ohio General Assembly will also consider lifting the funding cap on charter schools and restructuring retirement for teachers. In addition to the proposed cuts in school funding from the state, districts that rely heavily on local property taxes will lose additional revenue this year. Specifically the tangible personal property taxes levied from the telecommunications industry will be eliminated this year under House Bill 66 signed into law in 2004.

Walking around in nurseries can be mind-boggling. Many home landscapes are just a collection of plants that were bought on impulse because they attracted attention when they were blooming. Another reason for putting off landscape projects is time. There aren’t all that many major home improvements that can be done in a single weekend, but that’s all the time, patience, and energy many people have when it comes to landscaping. Landscape work is drudgery for most homeowners. Routine maintenance tasks like mowing and weeding can eat up much of your available time, especially if your landscape is poorly planned (or unplanned). It’s also hard for many people to visualize major projects. If you’d like to have a more attractive landscape, you have a magic tool that will make it possible like never before. It’s called a digital camera. As many times as you’ve looked at your home, you’ve probably never looked at it through a landscaper’s eyes. A huge first step toward a landscape design is simply taking photos of your property from every angle. What does it really look like from the street, or from your neighbor’s yard? Take your camera with you for a few weeks as you drive around. You’ll probably see some pretty landscaping or some plants that catch your eye. Stop and snap a photo. What you’re seeing may not work in your particular yard but you’ll start to identify what appeals to you and what you like, and that’s very helpful. Another great resource can be found in homemaker magazines like House Beautiful and Midwest Living. They have feature articles with lots

of pretty photos, showing “dream homes” and welldone landscapes. Some of these will appeal to you and capture your imagination; take a moment and clip them out. Even if these projects are out of reach or inappropriate for your yard, it’s still helpful to identify what you like and develop your own personal taste. In our garden center we have a “Snapshot Gardening Design Desk” where we give our customers free landscape guidance. If people bring us photos and measurements, we can send them home with everything they need for simple projects. The more photos they have the more helpful we can be.

If their needs are more complicated we might recommend a “house-call,” but very often we’re able to get them started on the most important step based on their photographs. Having a plan on paper makes any home improvement project more successful. It saves wasted time, effort and money no matter what. If you do a little homework, you can get much better guidance from any design professional. Public Address Announcer Clinics Princeton High School will be the site of a clinic for those who want to learn about public address announcing. The clinic will be from 9 a. m. - 12 p. m. where Tom Kinder, the announcer for the Cincinnati Bengals, will host the clinic. The clinic is sponsored by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers (NASPAA), the professional association for sports public address announcers. It is for public address announcers of junior high school, middle school, senior high school, college, and youth football. The Ohio High School Athletic Association is sponsoring two scholarships to the clinic and it will pay the registration fees of the first two adults to register who bring with them a high school student announcer. The clinics will address the announcer’s role, announcing expectations, Do’s and Don’ts of announcing football, how to handle emergecny situations, as well as scriptiing and working with a spotter. Attendees will have the opportuity to participate in voice training and announcing exercises. A football official will review new rule changes, officials’ hand signals, and ways that officials and announcers can work better together. “Sports public address announcers should enhance the spectators enjoyment of the game without inserting themselves,” said Brad Rumble, NASPAA Executive Director.. Coaches Associations make proposals The Board of Directors of the Ohio High School Athletic Association recently heard proposals from three coaches associations. The Golf Coaches Association asked for the starting date for practice to annually be the first Monday of August and that regular season competition be permitted to begin four days after the start of practice. The Tennis Coaches Association asked that the draw and seeding dates for the boys and girls sectional tournaments take place one week prior to the start of the respective sectionals. The Volleyball Coaches Association made four proposals. That the annual starting date becomes the first Monday of August, that the Foundation Match be allowed any time from the first Monday of August through the last Saturday of the regular season, that the official state tournament ball should be a black/white/gray Molten ball with OHSAA, NFHS, and OHSVCA logos, and that the school name and/or mascot be permitted along the top and/or bottom of the net.

Seniors groove to Latin beat at lifelong learning centers

“The beat goes on” (borrowing words from a popular Sonny & Cher song) at three area lifelong learning centers and does so with a Latin flair. The Clermont Senior Services Union and Miami Township Lifelong Learning Centers, along with the Bethel Center, offer Zumba Gold classes once a week. Bethel resident, Kim Coniglio, is the certified instructor. Basic Zumba is a popular fitness program inspired by Latin dance. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that is lots of fun and easy to learn. Zumba Gold includes a series of fitness programs specifically designed to take the exciting Latin and International dance rhythms in the original Zumba and bring them to the active older adult, the beginner participant, and other special populations that may need modifications for success. The biggest difference

between Basic Zumba and Zumba Gold is that Zumba Gold can be done in a chair

for those who are in wheelchairs or who cannot stand for long periods of time. The dance/exercise program addresses the anatomical, physiological, and psychological needs specific to these populations. It also includes a Zumba chair workout. Coniglio extended her Zumba certification to include
