To enter, students must submit a oneminute video by May 6 to P a n e r a To p Te a c h e r s . c o m explaining why the teacher of their choice should be chosen as a top teacher. “We are looking for energy, enthusiasm, creativity and that emotional connection they have with their teacher,” said Lisa Kennedy, marketing manager for the Eastgate Panera Bread. Kennedy said students are so tech savvy these days, the company wanted to try video entries to have a new, fun way for them to showcase their favorite teachers. If students don’t have access to a camera, they can send in a 100 to 200 word essay.

Whole In My Heart support group meeting while he was home. “I don’t think he expected all this,” Wilder’s mom, Andrea, said about the recognition.

Undercover investigation busts spa operators for prostitution Green Spa offered massage, acupressure, illegal services

Village, township look to fix Church Street Repairs to road will make it passable by school buses BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Green Spa at Eastgate Mall was the target of an undercover investigation that ended last week with several arrests including charges for prostitution. Sgt. Scott Blankenship of Union Township Police Department said officers decided to do an undercover investigation in March, after receiving a complaint in February that people were practicing services at the spa without a license, and possibly taking it too far with the services. Blankenship said the spa was advertising acupressure services. “At first we thought it was going to be an issue of practicing without a license,” Blankenship said. “After our first undercover we realized there was illegal activity.”

The spa at Eastgate Mall appears to just be a large room with several massage tables blocked off with screens for privacy. However, Blankenship said the spa also has back rooms, where employees took under cover officers. After several undercover operations, police issued a search warrant on April 5 for the two Green Spa locations, one at Eastgate Mall and one at Kenwood Mall. Police proceeded to charge several employees and the spa owner with various charges relating to the investigation. Those charged included Caixiang Ma and Hua Jin, employees, who were both charged with practicing medicine without a certificate, and prostitution. Guizhen Wang was charged with practicing medicine without a certificate. Blankenship said the spa manager Deqiu Nie was

charged with several counts of promoting prostitution and practicing medicine without a certificate. Baojian Xiang, the spa owner, was also charged with promoting prostitution and practicing medicine without a certificate. Police arrested Ma and Wang April 5 and arrested Xiang late last week. Blankenship said the two other employees, Jin and Nie,

Clermont County residents could see improvements to Church Street in the near future thanks to the village of Amelia and Batavia Township, which both share ownership of the street. “The street is in such bad repair,” said Amelia Mayor Leroy Ellington. “On both sides it drops almost completely off. The school would like to use that road as an access point, right now they aren’t using it at all.” Church Street is located beside Amelia Elementary School and connects Main Street and Chapel Road. Not only is the street dotted with pot holes and degraded pavement, but it also narrows to one lane in front of the school. Ellington said the village of Amelia applied for a grant in 2009 from the Ohio Public Works Commission to have major repairs done to the road.

The repairs at the time were expected to cost nearly $800,000, and would involve widening and resurfacing the road. “Unfortunately there were matching grant dollars needed,” said Ellington. “At that time we were not in the position to guarantee we would have the money. We had to take ourselves out of consideration for the grant.” Ellington hopes to apply for a grant this year and not have a similar problem. This time around, the village of Amelia will not be alone with funding. Rex Parsons, Batavia Township administrator, presented the issue to trustees at their April 5 meeting. Parsons informed trustees that Batavia Township is responsible for maintaining 100 feet of the eastern lane of Church Street, and would have to be involved in repairs. Parsons said he was working with the village of Amelia to determine the extent of the repairs and what Batavia Township would be responsible for financially.

Clermont County Commissioners honored Pfc. Matthew Wilder of the United States Army April 13 for his service in Afghanistan. “I’m proud of you,” said Danny Bare, executive director of Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission. “You are what makes it all happen. We are able to sit here and do our business as citizens because of your service.” Bare presented Wilder with a challenge coin and information about the services his organization has available to returning veterans. “You make sure you get him over to our office,” Bare said to Wilder’s parents Mark and Andrea. “To make sure this returning veteran gets all of his benefits.” Wilder, who is from Eastgate, returned home from serving in Afghanistan for almost seven months. Wilder said the experience was worse than he expected, and he was glad to be home. “It is definitely nice to see all of my friends and family,” Wilder said about coming

Ellington said the deadline for the grant is in the coming months. “The village and the township have a responsibility to see roads like this are properly repaired and safe for travel,” Ellington said. “It is something we’re very aware of and hopefully we can make at least some improvement.”

Understanding fleas will help you to control them

B R O A D S H E E T

To help improve your flea fighting skills, lets look at the flea and its lifecycle. Fleas are parasites that feed off their hosts blood and when a flea bites its victims skin it injects a minute amount of flea antigen. Pets vary in their reactions to flea antigen. In some pets the bite from one flea can trigger and skin rash. This can quickly escalate into far less infection as the pet bites and scratches at its irritated skin. As if this weren't enough, flea bites can also transmit tapeworms if swallowed by your itching dog. If your dog has fleas, it will usually scratch and bite around its lower back and tail. Fleas are easiest seen along the underbelly where the fur is sparse. In general, then fall off the skin of the dog and land in the carpet. In 2-14 days, they

hatch into larva that feed on feces (dried blood) of a dult fleas. Fleas are fittest and most reproductive at temps of 65 80' and humidity > 70 percent. Dry weather, high altitudes, temps > 100' or < 0' are fatal to flea larvae. For most of the country this translates into a flea season from late spring through the first frost. However, if fleas become well intreached in your carpets during the summer, their reproductive activities may continue indoors interrupted through the winter, and, if you live in the relatively wild temperatures of the west or south fleas can be a year round indoor/outdoor prob-

fleas that do arrive in your yard are sure to meet with some insecticide and die. Yard sprays generally last one to two weeks, and granular insecticides will usually last one to two months, both dependent upon the the amount of rain or watering and your frequency of lawn mowing. It is a good idea to mow the lawn and rake the clippings before treating the yard. There are a number of good products for treating your house. The frequency of treatment will vary with the product used and how well you prepare the house for treatment. Please ask your veterinarian for specifics on house preparation. Remember to treat the car if your pet rides frequently, and treat any other place he visits. If you choose to have your house and yard done by a pro-

fessional extreminator, be sure they are treating for fleas and not just roaches or termites or some type of yard pest besides fleas. Most exterminators do an excellent job; just be careful that they are doing what you are paying for. Treatment of pets for fleas is a widely misunderstood task. The frequency of repeating treatments is very important. Most of the sprays, powders, and shampoos have to be repeated every 1-2 days to be effective. Flea collars have never been much more than just a partial aid in flea control and they are certainly a poor choice in comparison to other products. Flea control tablets and pour-on insecticides are available from your veterinarian. There is no scientific evidence that yeast tablets or garlic are of any value in flea

control. Studies have been done and they can demonstrate no efficacy at all. Ultrasonic collars have received a similar grade when tested scientifically. Many people report that they work for a very short time, then lose their effectiveness. There is no magic to flea control. You must treat all your animals, the house, the yard, and the rest of the pet's environment. Treat all areas regularly and keep treating even after you don't see any more fleas and you will be able to get them under control. If you have any questions, ask your veterinarian for advice and reliable flea control products.

Now is probably a good time to repeat flea control recommendations, as almost everyone with a pet will have some flea problems sooner or later if they aren't already. Many dogs and cats have at least a minor flea problem and a great number have major flea troubles. Controlling fleas is a never-ending task. There is virtually a limitless supply of fleas from stray animals, wild animals, and your neighbor's animals. Volunteering is a way of life

Volunteers deliver meals to Senior Services customers with a menu and a smile

Each week, Nancy, a Clermont Senior Services customer, looks forward to her visit from Meals-onWheels volunteer, Ken Butler. Ken delivers Nancy’s personally chosen Savory Select meals with a warm, friendly smile. “I can be having a bad day, but when I see Ken coming up the sidewalk, it makes me smile. He even brings my trash can up from the curb,” Nancy said. Nancy has health issues that hinder her ability to get around in her home or get out and socialize with others. Visits from Ken and CSS staff are important to her; she refers to Ken and staff as her “friends.” She also appreciates the MOW Savory Select program, which allows her to pick her own meals from a menu. “It’s marvelous to have choices,” Nancy said. “It’s also a blessing if you can’t stand for periods of

time to prepare your own meal. With the Savory Select meals I am assured a healthy and tasty meal.”

Many people are seeking a more fulfilling life. Volunteering helps fill that void. Volunteers receive an inner satisfaction in helping other people that cannot be derived from their jobs. A man that delivers meals-onwheels for Clermont Senior Services commented, “Life is not about money. It’s about how you feel about yourself.” Well said! Direct service volunteers (those who serve one-on-one with seniors) are a special breed. They often work alone and do not benefit from the camaraderie of working with staff or other volunteers. But they have something much

better. They meet the people they serve in person, hear their thank-yous, and see the smiles on their faces. CSS volunteers experience first hand that feeling that only comes from helping others. They serve seniors face to face through our meals-on-wheels and shopping programs. The shopping program is great because even people that work fulltime can participate. It’s easy to combine grocery shopping for someone else with your own shopping trip. One young woman delivers meals at a senior housing complex with her three year old son. The seniors gather

Items sought If you are starting your annual spring cleaning, consider donating items no longer needed to Clermont Senior Services for their annual Arts, Antiques & Collectibles in September. dessert? If a customer needs a daily safety check, staff or volunteers continue to deliver a chilled meal every day. Ken thinks the Savory Selects program is beneficial to both customers and the agency. “Not only does it allow customers the chance to select their meals, it also reduces the number of delivery trips that have to be made,” he said. Ken enjoys volunteering and delivering meals to homebound seniors. “I do this because I want to be of assistance. I’m retired and this is a way for me to give back to my community and its seniors.” If you think you would like to become a Meals-onWheels volunteer, please call Connie at 536-4021. Volunteer routes are available in the Eastgate, Amelia, Bethel and Williamsburg areas.

round when they see Austin coming. He hands them a carton and says, “Here’s your milk. I’ll see you next week.” The seniors love it. That’s the thing about direct service volunteering, it’s not just about service. It’s about bringing a bright spot to someone’s day. One meals-on-wheels volunteer said, “I know that I may be the only person the customer sees that day. I love volunteering!” Another person said, “I like volunteering because the people are glad to see me, and their pets are too!” Some volunteers actually keep a stash of dog biscuits in their cars! Why do these volunteers give so much time? Because they want to make a difference in someone's life. They sincerely care about people and they have a heart for service. They are a shining example of what is right with the world. If you have some time on your hands and would like to volunteer, please call Connie at 536-4021.

What You Will Find: April 10,1792 was a significant day in Clermont County's history, it was the day two cultures collided... The members of one culture prided themselves as serving as caretakers of their great creator's earth from whose soil grew forth beans, corn and squash. Streams provided pure water, forest provided game for the cooking pots and wood for shelter and fire. For those who belonged to the second culture, the vast fertile land beyond the great Ohio River and between the Miami's ~ the Great and the Little~ nurtured their dreams and fed their desires to claim a piece of land for their own. A place unlike the heavy populated area East of the mountains; somewhere they would have

plenty of space to work and live. Maybe it was inevitable that on April 10th, 1792 Frontiersman Simon Kenton, Shawnee Warrior Tecumseh and their followers would confront one another at a place where the Grassy Run empties into the East Fork of the Little Miami River in Jackson Township. Little did they know that this confrontation would be recorded as the largest skirmish between the red man and white man in Clermont County! By: Sharon A. Brumagem

Ticks Carry more than Lyme Disease Clermont county residents and their pets need to become aware of the most common tick-borne disease in our county. In fact Clermont County has the highest number of cases in Ohio of this disease. Have you guessed it yet? I am writing about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). RMSF is carried by the American Dog Tick, and infections are very common in Clermont counties tick season, between May 1st and July 31st. The tick will attach to pets or people and some will infect them with the RMSF microorganism. The symptoms usually appear 3-12 days after the tick contact, and include fever, headache, lethargy, inappetence, and a rash. If you suspect RMSF in either yourself or your pet, it is important to contact your physician or your veterinarian as soon as possible. Appropriate antibiotics must be given to help ensure a rapid recovery. This disease, along with any tick-borne disease, is best prevented by the following suggestions; • While outdoors make frequent inspections for ticks around the ears, armpits, and groin on yourself, all pets, and children. • Use tweezers and hemostats when removing ticks, and washup after doing so. • Apply a good quality flea and tick topical or collar to your pet on a regular basis and prior to hikes in high grass. • Avoid high grassy area for your pet and yourself. • Cut your dogs yard on a regular basis
