Warehousing facility opened in Batavia Township BY BRETT ROLLER Sun staff
Utility Trailer Manufacturing marked the opening of its nationwide distribution center in Batavia Township with a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday, March 30.
The warehouse occupies the former Georgia-Pacific plant on Curliss Lane. Utility’s after market distribution center supplies the nation’s largest trailer-only dealer network with replacement parts for all of the company’s 50,000 trailers that remain on the road today. The Batavia location
consolidates distribution previously handled from Utility’s Sharonville and Los Angeles facilities. “This facility is three times the square footage in Sharonville but five to six times the cubic footage,” after market parts director Michael Moore said. “We have lots of room for growth.” All but one of the facility’s 34 employees migrated from the Sharonville facility, but
Moore said as the parts market expands Utility hopes to hire additional employees. “This facility has been empty for two years and represented a loss of 100 jobs, we’ve brought in 34,” Moore said. “We will probably need more people in the future.” As the warehouse expands Moore said Utility is researching automation of some of their inventory maintenance, however he said he does not
anticipate full automation in the near future. “We’re looking into automating some of our processes but we don’t have the volume to automate the whole place,” Moore said. Utility Senior Vice President of sales and marketing Craig Bennett said recent economic pressure has caused many companies to shift focus from replacing older trailers to repairing their existing fleet,
which places a higher demand on after market replacement parts. Utility maintains 105 dealers nationwide, which Bennett said provides carriers with the quick, local repairs they need to maintain productivity. Vice President Craig Bennett said the current political climate is focused on shipment by rail. The Curliss Lane warehouse has a railroad See Warehouse, Page 2
Rep. Schmidt opens Union Township office New location provides access in large population center BY BRETT ROLLER Sun staff
Congresswoman Jean Schmidt was welcomed into her new office in Union Township with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Union Township Trustees Thursday, March 24. Schmidt relocated her Clermont County office from Batavia to the Union Township Civic Center amidst discussion by the Clermont County Commissioners regarding the cost effectiveness of a number of the county’s buildings. “The board of trustees thought it was very vital, crucial, that an office for our Congresswoman was maintained in Clermont County, but more importantly in Union Township,” Trustee Matt Beamer said. “This facility, the Union Township Civic Center, has great access, plen-
ty of parking, and handicap accessibility.” Beamer said Schmidt’s office adds to the services provided by the existing township office, West Clermont Local Schools Board of Education Office, a Clermont Senior Services branch office, a post office, the gymnasium, and available meeting rooms to provide an all encompassing civic center for the community. “The addition of our Congresswoman really makes a complete civic center here in Clermont County, Union Township,” Beamer said. After the announcement of the results of the new census, which show Union Township’s population exceeding nearby Anderson Township’s, Beamer said a Union Township office was especially efficient for a large See Office, Page 2

Museum to commemorate Civil War sesquicentennial Local author’s exhibit featured BY BRETT ROLLER Sun staff
Local author and expert on Morgan’s Raid Lester Horwitz will be featured this summer at the Greater Loveland Historical Museum as part of the museum’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Museum director Jane Beller said the museum is soliciting loans of collections from Kentucky and throughout the Greater Cincinnati area as part of the exhibit. Horowitz will be loaning his collection of 15 to 20 years of research into Morgan’s Raid. The collection includes a number of records and an eight foot by 22 foot 1869
map of Indiana and Ohio denoting each spot were a damage claim was filed as a result of the raid. The raid was one of the few instances in which Confederate soldiers fought north of the Ohio River. They traveled through towns in Indiana and Ohio, outrunning Union soldiers and the United States Navy. Horowitz said he became interested in the raid when he learned former owners of his home were one of the 4,375 people to submit damage claims from the raid to the state government. He first cochaired an exhibit featuring his research in 1995 and frequently gave talks on the raid at the museum. In 1999 he published his book detailing the raid, “The Longest Raid of the Civil War.” Beller said the Civil War exhibit will open on May 7. The day will feature a brass
quintet and talks by Greater Cincinnati’s own Civil War historian and author of “Rebel Rider” and many other historical books James Ramage. Horowitz said he will also be in attendance. The museum will host a number of events through July commemorating the Civil War. On June 25 a talk on Civil War weapons will be given by Norman Neal. In celebration of Independence Day the museum will host Abraham Lincoln reenactor Stan Wurtz during their ice cream social on July 2. On July 16 the Ohio Military Band will be in concert and the museum will provide special tours of the exhibit. Beller said Horowitz will frequently give talks throughout the exhibit period and the museum will be open each See Author, Page 2

Spelling bee to be held The Literacy Council of Clermont and Brown Counties is preparing for the 19th Annual Spelling Bee. This fund-raiser has supported the efforts of assisting adults in reading for 29 years. Are there challenges to a Spelling Bee? Yes, there are! The words range from easy to difficult. Materials, books, and computer software are just a few of the expenses that are increasing. The proceeds from the Spelling Bee offset the Literacy Council’s mission. It takes a lot of courage to ask the Literacy Council to help you learn to read, and even the simplest of words may seem impossible, but in the end, every student has a victory. The space is being provided to the Congresswoman rent free until the expiration of her term in 2013. At that time the contract could be extended. “Thank you for the very gracious rent, I think the tax payers can afford it, and I’m looking forward to being here a very long time,” Schmidt said. Schmidt said the civic center provides added security for her constituents and office employees. “You never know what’s going to happen in life but sometimes bad people do bad things and in the wake of what happened to my very good colleague Gabby (Arizona Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford) back in January this was a very prophetic decision,” Schmidt said. Trustee Tim Donnellon thank the public officials gathered for attending, and thank Beamer for his efforts in bringing Schmidt to Union Township. “It’s very rare that township trustees get specific
recognition for the work that they do, I want to point out that Matt Beamer was very instrumental in...making this event possible,” Trustee Tim Donnellon said. Trustee Bob McGee closed the ceremony with a prayer followed by a ribbon cutting. The Union Township office is one of two new offices Schmidt opened last week. On Saturday March 26 she opened a new office in Peebles in Adams County. Schmidt said she moved her Portsmouth office to a location with lower rent in the Scioto County city and the savings allowed her to open a Peebles office at the cost of an additional phone line. She said she was thrilled to have easier access to her constituents in a district that stretches from Scioto and Pike Counties to downtown Cincinnati. The rising gas prices have made the new locations especially beneficial to residents in Adams County and Anderson Township, Schmidt said.

The Sunday Sun - April 3, 2011 - Page 7
You may be too busy to realize it, but April is Stress Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Health Resource Network, a nonprofit health education group, Stress Awareness Month is designed to promote awareness about ways to reduce stress in our lives. And if you’re a member of the so-called “Sandwich Generation,” you may well have plenty of stress to deal with — especially financial stress. And that’s why you may want to look at this month as an opportunity to explore ways of “de-stressing” yourself. To understand the scope of the problem facing people in your situation, consider this: One out of every eight Americans aged 40 to 60 is raising a child while caring for an aging parent, according to the Pew Research Center. The definition of “eldercare” can range from having the parent living in one’s home to helping pay for the
parent’s stay in an assisted living or nursing home facility. When you consider the costs involved in this type of care, added to the expenses of raising your children and possibly even providing some financial support to them as young adults, it’s easy to see how you could potentially face enormous strains, both emotionally and financially. To help ease this burden, consider these suggestions: • Save. As a Sandwich Generation member, you’re probably within shouting distance of your own retirement — so you need to save for it. This may not be easy. You don’t know how much financial support you may someday have to provide your elderly parents — and even after your children are grown, they may need some help from you. Unfortunately, in helping these “boomerang” children, many people disrupt their day-to-day cash flow and raid their savings. That’s
why it’s important to try to “pay yourself first” by deferring part of each paycheck into a 401(k) and by automatically moving money each month from your checking or savings account into an IRA. • Talk. Many people in the “Greatest Generation” (over age 80) have not even prepared a will. If your parents are in that group, you may want to talk to them about taking action. Also, find out who, if anyone, is handling their investments. And ask if your parents understand how Medicare works and if they need to add supplemental health insurance, such as Medigap. Plus, you need to find out if your parents have created a power of attorney or health care directive. It’s best to have these conversations sooner rather than later. • Delegate. You eventually may have to take some responsibility for your parents’ care — but you don’t have to do it alone. You
could, for example, work with a financial services provider that offers trust services, which can be invaluable if your parents are incapacitated and useful even if they aren’t. A professional trust officer can, among other duties, help manage your parents’ investments, pay their bills, keep their records and supervise distribution of their assets to beneficiaries. In short, a qualified trust officer can make life a lot easier for you. Stress Awareness Month lasts only 30 days, but by taking the right steps, you can de-stress yourself for many years to come. After all, just because you’re in the Sandwich Generation, it doesn’t mean you have to be “squished.”

Visit three Philadelphia gardens this spring
B R O A D S H E E T
Beautiful Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is one of our favorite places. An elegant five-acre conservatory is surrounded by elegant gardens, water features and DuPont family history. It’s easy to pass an entire afternoon there and not see all there is to see. The world-famous Winterthur Museum and Gardens is a few miles away in Wilmington, Delaware. Another DuPont estate, Winterthur features a 275room mansion filled with furniture from all over the world, the Campbell Soup Tureen collection, and a thousand acres of gardens and grounds. Our favorite spot there is the “Enchanted Woods,” a fantasy garden built for children of all ages. Think “Fairy Garden” only bigger. Nearby on historic Route 1 is another treasure, the Brandywine River Museum with its collection of Wyeth family paintings and other contemporary art. The house and studio of
illustrator N.C. Wyeth is right around the corner. We wrote about this area earlier this year, and suggested a spring bus tour would be fun. We’ve had so many responses from readers that we’ve decided to make these gardens the centerpiece of a five-day trip to Philadelphia, and you’re invited! Join us for five days, four nights touring the finest gardens in Philadelphia, along with other Philadelphia attractions, and marvelous food. We’ll tour the fabulous Longwood Gardens, the Winterthur Museum and gardens, the Brandywine Museum and N.C Wyeth studio, and (we hope) the Barnes Foundation collection of postimpressionist art in Merion, PA. You can spend a day in the “City of Brotherly Love,” touring Independence Mall, the Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, along with other Philadelphia landmarks like the “Love” statue, Logan Fountain, the “Rocky” statue at the Art Museum; and the Maxfield Parrish Tiffany
