Search for Asian longhorned beetle continues BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
Local, state and national agriculturalists have been hard at work since the discovery of the Asian longhorned beetle in Tate Township June 17, and have made progress in evaluating the infestation of the beetle and preventing its spread. Surveyors from the United
States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the Ohio Department of Agriculture came to Tate Township soon after the beetle was discovered to survey trees for infestation. Surveying involves selecting random trees and evaluating them for signs of the beetle, and so far, 87 of 2,942 trees surveyed have shown
signs of Asian longhorned beetle damage. At the June 23 meeting, Joe Boggs of the Hamilton County Extension Office, described the typical signs of infestation, which include round holes in the bark, accumulation of sawdust, oozing sap and round pits in the bark. “It looks like packing materials coming out of the trees,” Boggs said at the meeting. Boggs also said there is a probability people investigating trees will see the adult beetles, which are black with
white markings and can be more than an inch long. Asian longhorned beetles infest and kill hardwood trees including maples, birches, elms and more. Now that they have been discovered in Clermont County, a quarantine has been issued to prevent the transport of these trees, including in firewood form, outside the regulated areas, which include Tate Township and East Fork State Park. To help educate residents in these areas about the beetle and the quarantine, a public
informational meeting was held July 30 in Bethel. Leah Donohoo, of the Ohio State University Extension Office, said a crowd of about 50 people was present at the meeting, and representatives from USDA-APHIS were on hand to answer questions about the beetle and the quarantine. Donohoo said much of the meeting was spent educating residents about the beetle, its characteristics and signs of its infestation. She said surveyors are still doing assessments and

kids,” Klepp said. “The same orneriness and the same arguments.” She’s right. The campers, all mingling at lunch time trying to find something fun to do, are all unique. Some are playing with a parachute, some are on the swings and some are playing pretend. The campers at Stepping Stones have a variety of disabilities including down syndrome, autism, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy and more. Children without disabilities are also among the campers. Day camp sessions are nearly every week from June to August. Regardless of what the camper’s age or challenge is, staff members find ways make sure every camper is included and is accomplishing
something each day of camp. “Everything they take home is something they did,” Kreimer said. “You can just feel that pride.” Kreimer said projects at camp are broken down into steps and staff members will have the campers contribute even if they can’t finish the whole project by themselves. Shane Daniel focused on completing one of these projects at camp June 30. Daniel created a headband out of feathers and paper, and even painted some of the feathers so he would have more colors. Daniel said he has been to camp Allyn before. “It gives me something to do, and it keeps me out of trouble,” Daniel said about camp. “I have enjoyed it the past three years and I just keep

coming back because it’s fun.” Part of what makes camp fun is the dedication and enthusiasm the camp staff and volunteers express every day. Klepp said the goal is to have one person for every camper, however, with the camp relying on volunteers, that number fluctuates each day. Kreimer and Klepp said Stepping Stones is always looking for volunteers to work with the campers, whether it be one week or the entire summer. They especially need people on Fridays and in August. “It’s important to make the campers day the best as possible,” Klepp said about having volunteers. “And it’s important for the volunteers so we can have a more open minded community.”
Working at day camp can’t really be called work, anyway. Everyone participates with the campers, whether it be swimming in the pool or fishing in the pond. And the smiles on the faces of the volunteers and staff members are just as frequent as those on the campers faces. “I like helping kids out,” Evan Dennis, a volunteer from Amelia, said. “Whether it’s just playing tag or swinging.” Dennis said representatives came to his school, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and told students about the camps. He decided to volunteer, and said he will leave camp with more responsibility and better friendships. See Camp, Page 2
A fatal crash occurred on state Route 756 in Franklin Township July 3, killing a Williamsburg man. At approximately 9:55 p.m. a 1992 Toyota Camry went off the right side of the road just west of Bolender Road, according to Sgt. Matt Hamilton of the Batavia Post Patrol. After exiting the road, the vehical went into a ditch and hit a utility pole and a tree. Anthony Dotson Jr., 22, of Williamsburg, who was a backseat passenger in the car, was killed as a result of the crash. The two other passengers in the vehicle included the driver, Travis Murphy, 19, of Bethel and another passenger, Michael Florence, 18, of Mt. Orab. After the crash, Dotson was transported to Brown County Hospital by the Felicity Fire Department, where he was pronounced dead. Sgt. Hamilton said there was no suspicion of alcohol use by the driver, and the Camry was the only vehicle involved. The accident is still under investigation and Sgt. Hamilton said officials are trying to determine what caused the car to go off the road. Sgt. Hamilton said this was the first fatal crash on state Route 756 this year. The last fatal accident on the road was in 2006.

Stepping Stones’ Camp Allyn is a hidden treasure in Batavia. It is set back off the road, nestled among trees, small ponds and trails. During the summer months, the location especially comes alive as it is host to day camp for children with disabilities. Peggy Kreimer, communications and grants director at Stepping Stones, said the 46acre location, owned by the Rotary Club of Cincinnati, has been there since the 1970s. Originally, it was used as a recreation camp for people suffering from Polio, and now it hosts almost 40 campers a day. The camp features fishing ponds, a swimming pool, walking trails, a playground, an amphitheater, a maze and more, all designed to be accessible to any child, whether they are in a wheelchair or have full mobility. “I think recreation is great for socialization,” Kara Klepp, day camp director, said. “And just to do activities every kid likes to do.” It took Klepp just one summer working at a camp for disabled children for her to change her major in college and focus on working with disabled children and adults. “I had so much fun,” Klepp said about her first camp. “I felt like my life had a lot more meaning. I wanted to help people, especially those with disabilities.” Klepp, who constantly has an eye on all the campers scurrying around, creates schedules and organizes daily activities for the day camps. She knows every camper’s name and can tell you about his or her disability and personality. “They’re just like regular
evaluations and couldn’t give details on a time frame of when the quarantine will be over. “It’s a long process and the villagers want an answer,” Donohoo said. For now, officials are telling residents in the regulated areas to not only end the movement of firewood, stumps, nursery stock and debris outside the quarantine, but also help educate others about the beetle and its threat.

Continued from page 1 “We don't only teach them,” Dennis said about the campers. “They teach us.” Like Dennis, Andrea Otten, of Batavia, has also learned from a child with a disability. Her cousin Darren
Shoemaker is disabled, and Otten has been around Darren most of her life. Helping him inspired her to volunteer at Camp Allyn, and she has since become a staff member. Kreimer said this frequently happens with volunteers,

who become a part of camp and decide it is a place they would like to work. While day camp is popular for both campers and volunteers, Stepping Stones has expanded over the years into much more. The organization now has a preschool, a Saturday kids club, adult services, an overnight respite and camp and an alternative education program for students with autism. In addition to the Lake Allyn Road location in Batavia, there is also a location on Given Road in Indian Hill, which is where the organization was founded and the first summer camp began. Kreimer said the organization and camps have been growing year after year. And what saddens her is that not everyone knows that there is a place where their child can be in a fun and helpful environment, like the accommodating surroundings of Camp

Soccer Officials training to be held The Southern Ohio Soccer Offials Association is an Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA)-certified official’s association formed in 2008 and primarily serving Clermont, Brown, Adams, and Highland counties. The purpose of the Association is to train and provide high school soccer officials for OHSAA contests while promoting the absolute highest standards of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity among its member officials. To support our continued growth, the SOSOA is actively recruiting new officials for the 2011 fall season. Previous experience as a coach, official, or player (at any level) is required. This is an excellent opportunity for former college and high school players to stay involved with the game, or for anyone else to “give back” to their community. Officials have a chance to build friendships with fellow officials, enjoy the exercise and earn extra cash, all while helping to ensure that playing opportunities remain available for today’s youth. The SOSOA will be offering a training class for new officials starting at 7 p.m. July 12 at Trinity Christian Fellowship, 3730 Cobb Rd. in Williamsburg. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for five weeks for a total of at least 25 hours of classroom and on-field instruction (including live pre-season matches). Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be licensed OHSAA officials eligible to work any school match up to and including the varsity level. The cost of the class is $110 which includes books, handouts, and OHSAA dues. The SOSOA instructors are well-respected veteran officials who are eager to share their knowledge and experience with new members. If you’ve ever thought about serving your community or giving back to the game you’ve loved, this is the perfect opportunity! For any questions or to enroll, contact Randy Hiler at (513) 379-4194 or rhiler161@msn.com.

If you’re a baseball fan, you’re no doubt aware that the MLB All-Star Game is being played on July 12. But while you’ll probably appreciate the grace and skill of the players, you may not realize just how much a baseball team can teach you about other aspects of life — such as investing. Specifically, consider the following characteristics: • Consistency — Baseball teams need to be consistent. They choose quality players and must have the patience and discipline to stick with those players during slumps. As an investor, you should choose quality investments and have the patience and discipline to stick with them over the long haul. • Diversification — A baseball team doesn’t have just one type of player — it contains pitchers, catchers,
infielders and outfielders. Your portfolio also needs to be diversified because if you own only a single type of investment, and a market downturn strikes that asset class particularly hard, your portfolio could take a big hit. Owning a diversified mix of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments can help reduce the effect of market volatility on your holdings. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. • Unity — While a baseball team contains a diverse collection of players, they all strive toward a common goal. And the mix of investments in your portfolio needs to work together to help achieve the various goals you’ve established, such as a com-
fortable retirement, college for your children and a legacy for your family. To work toward your individual objectives, you will need to create an investment mix that’s based on your risk tolerance, time horizon, family situation and other factors. • Flexibility — While every member of a professional baseball team is a good player, one might be better than another in a given situation. For instance, a faster runner might pinch-run for someone else. And as you move on in your “game” of life, you will need flexibility in making your investment decisions. As one example, when you near retirement, you may want to reduce your exposure to risk somewhat, so you might decide to replace some — but certainly not all — of your growth-oriented vehicles
www.clermontsun.com
with investments that can offer greater protection of your principal. • Good management — Even the best group of baseball players needs a manager to guide them and make decisions during a ballgame. And to help you make investment choices during different times in your life, you might benefit from working with a financial professional — someone who knows your risk tolerance, investment preferences and long-term aspirations. You may never find yourself surrounded by the greatest ballplayers in the world — but remembering these traits can help keep your portfolio “in the game.”

The right time to plant trees is now There’s a sign in our garden center that says “The Best Time to Plant a Tree is Ten Years Ago; the Next Best Time is Today!” People often ask us about timing for tree plantings and there’s no simple answer, but our sign says it best. Putting off tree plantings postpones the enjoyment and increases the cost, so doing it sooner is always better. There’s a big difference between “planting” and “transplanting.” Planting means taking a tree that’s above ground, either in a pot or “balled and burlapped”, and installing it permanently in the ground. Proper planting improves a tree’s chances of survival versus being held above ground. Waiting to purchase a tree until it’s been out of the ground longer can only reduce its vigor. Transplanting is different. Transplanting means digging up an established tree and planting it in a different location. The best time to transplant is during the late fall, winter or early spring when it has no leaves and isn’t actively growing. This is called the “dormant” period; the tree is literally asleep and will tolerate disturbances best. Any activity that damages the root system while the tree has leaves, bloom or fruit is likely to shock the tree. Professional nurserymen only dig trees when they are dormant. Later, when they leaf out, trees can adjust to a reduced root system by producing less or smaller leaves and fruit. Once planted, trees will first replace the damaged roots before starting to grow. This adjustment usually takes several years. Container-grown trees are sold with all the roots they needed to reach their present size. This makes them adjust more quickly when planted, however if they are in the pot too long they will become “root-bound”, meaning their roots will grow around and

around the pot. This can lead to “girdling” roots; roots that strangle and choke the main trunk as the tree gets older. It’s important to make some vertical cuts around the outside of the root system when planting container-grown trees, to prevent girdling. Here’s an announcement: Our friends at Main Street Portsmouth invite you to their First Annual SelfGuided “Garden Tour” Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. Some of Portsmouth’s most attractive home landscapes will be open to the public for the first time, in what promises to be an annual event. Gardens on the Tour are the Dr. Alain T. Asher residence at 633 Fourth Street;
the home of James Dalton & Dr. John Turjoman at 1828 Franklin Boulevard; the Barry & Jean Carlson residence at 3026 North Hill Road; the home of Stephen R. & Susan M. Fitzer at 3020 Woodridge Way; and the Dr. John & Lee Kasper home at 2920 Brookwood Drive. Having designed and installed the Kasper’s landscape, I’ve been invited to host the tour of Kasper’s and answer any questions you may have. I look forward to meeting my readers from the Portsmouth area, and hope you turn out in force to support Main Street Portsmouth and their good work by attending this event. Advance tickets are on sale downtown. On the day of the Garden Tour, tickets will be
available at the Tour sites. You will receive a map with Tour locations when you purchase your ticket. Your $15 donation to Main Street Portsmouth will help preserve the heritage of downtown Portsmouth.
