Unique sport has league in Clermont Frisbee golf takes off locally and nationally BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI

Bethel looking at budget reductions Fiscal officer talks about 2012 outlook

Every Thursday night, rain or shine, a small group gathers at Williamsburg Community Park. They hand over money, get a randomly selected partner and prepare to compete in a sport that has escalated in recent years. The sport is disc golf, also known as frisbee golf, and while it began as a game, it is now an organized professional sport, with venues and competitions all over the state and country. “You got people from Williamsburg, Norwood, Cincinnati,” Troy Ison, of Amelia, said about the league he organizes at Williamsburg Community Park. “We play every week, year-round.” Ison is a disc golf veteran, and has been involved with the sport for 25 years. The former softball player, who had a back injury, said disc golf allows him to still get the competitive juices flowing and make great friends. “It doesn’t matter how old you are,” Ison said. “They go by ages, which helps people.” Ison said in tournaments, divisions are split up by age and gender. He said he thinks the sport has become so popular because it is cheaper than other sports and allows you to play as an individual and depend on yourself. In this area, the organizing body for disc golf is the Greater Cincinnati Flying Disc Association. The club helps organize leagues, local series tournaments, nationally recognized tournaments and other events each year. Their website provides links to rules, events, tournament results and local courses, which includes 31 courses in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Garrett Heise, of Forest Park, throws a frisbee toward hole four during a disc golf scramble at Williamsburg Community Park July 7. Heise has been playing disc golf for about five years.

Disc golf can be likened to regular golf in many ways. Players carry bags filled with different sized frisbees. There is a frisbee similar to a driver in golf, designed to go further, faster, and there is a frisbee similar to a putter, designed for shorter-distance throws and everything in between. In a similar fashion to golf, disc golf participants start their turn at a tee-like area, with their first throw resembling a long drive in golf. At the July 7 league competition, participants arrived and threw some cash into the pot. Five dollars went toward winnings, and $2 went into the “ace fund,” which is awarded if a player gets a hole in one. The ace fund carries over if it’s not awarded and was up to

$200 that day. Ison divided the group into doubles, with two pairs starting at different spots around the course. He said the competition is set up just like a golf scramble, so each team uses the best throws at each hole. The hole, which is really a five-foot-tall metal basket, can be anywhere. At the Williamsburg course, some holes are located between trees, some across streams and some at the base of hills, which adds to the challenge. For Ison’s scramble, the players complete 19 holes, and even do the first six over because they like playing so much. At the end, the team with the least number of total throws wins. And while there is still a golf-like etiquette to abide by

when playing disc golf, the atmosphere during the scramble was a bit more relaxed, and players enjoyed each other’s company along the way. “It’s just fun,” Jeremy Boling of Mt. Orab said about the sport. “And good to hang out with friends,” Boling said he got into the sport about two years ago after a friend told him about it. He used to play baseball but he said he prefers disc golf now. Like Boling, many people have become involved in the sport recently. Almost onethird of the courses in greater Cincinnati have established in the last five years, and Mike Naegele, of Anderson Township, said the number of professionals in the sport has

increased as well. “The sport has exploded like crazy since 1993,” Naegele said. 1993 was the year Naegele began playing disc golf. He said back then there were fewer than 100 professionals, and today thousands of professionals are registered. For Naegele, the reason he plays is simple, and it’s what has been attracting people to the sport, especially in recent years. “It’s great exercise, you get to meet people and drive all over the country.” Three of Greater Cincinnati’s 31 disc golf courses are located in Clermont County, including See Golf, Page 2

Bethel Fiscal Officer Bill Gilpin has given council members an update on the 2012 tax budget, and while he had some good news, he is predicting reductions in the future. Gilpin said the village is chipping away at the negative balance in the general fund, however like a number of local governments, Bethel is looking at reductions in the near future because of state funding. Gilpin said he spoke with state representatives about the reductions in the local government fund, and although the numbers weren’t final yet, he said they were looking at a six to eight percent reduction in funding from the state. With the reductions, he said the general fund could decrease each year moving forward. In 2011 he said the local government fund provided almost $150,000. That number will decrease to around $93,000 in just a couple years. “I’m holding hope that the economy will recover,” Gilpin said at the meeting. “And they’ll pump some money back into the local government fund.” Gilpin said the worst case scenario is that the village will have to make reductions to account for the reductions on the state level. He said $40,000 to $70,000 would likely come from the police department, because it is a large expense. As far as 2012 expenditures

Amelia police officer honored BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Cpl. Matt Braden is no stranger to protecting people. The Amelia graduate became a police officer not long after high school, decided to join the Marine Corps Reserves, and in just a few weeks, he will leave for his second deployment overseas. Braden was honored for this

commitment at the commissioners’ regular session July 6. “It shows that we are very community-based here,” Braden said about the ceremony. “And the community wants to help its military personnel.” Braden said that while he appreciates being honored, he really appreciates the support families of servicemen get in the county.

“To me it’s a burden lifted off my shoulders knowing if my wife needs to talk to someone, there are support groups in this area that she can reach out to,” he said. Braden was honored by multiple people at the session, including the commissioners, Frank Morrow of the Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission, Steve Caraway on behalf of Congresswoman Jean Schmidt and Amelia’s new police chief, John Wallace. We at All Creatures see a lot of rescues come through our doors. These are the people that pick up the abandoned animals on the side of the road, take the frantic call from someone who has just been evicted from their apartment and have no where for them to go much less their pets, or drive to the outskirts of the farthest county to a shelter that no one has ever heard of to collect a bunch of dogs or cats that are on there final days of life because they have not been adopted.

DR. DAN MEAKIN ALL CREATURES ANIMAL HOSPITAL

These “rescues” take in the lost and abandoned animals, treat their aliments, spay and neuter the pets and then try to find a good home for their wards. These are what can be called classified as a true rescue. Friends of Noah Animal Shelter is located right next door to All Creatures Animal Hospital and provides this type of rescue service. When new owners are

looking for dogs or cats the first thing they think of is a breeder. Breeders are not the only place to look for the “perfect” pet…without realizing people over look the rescues thinking that they would not be able to find a perfect match for their home and family. Most people would be surprised to realize that rescues have all types of animals with many different ages. Many would-be owners are looking for a puppy or a kitten…the only thing that most would-be owners don’t realize is that if they look at an older dog or cat the personal-

ities are already established and the new owners will know exactly what type of personality they are getting. If you are in the market for a good pet please look at Friends of Noah Animal Shelter or go to www.petfinders.org. You would be surprised at your luck and how many choices you have to choose from! Friends of Noah is a nonprofit and a non-kill animal shelter located in Amelia, Ohio. For more information feel free to visit our animals on pet-finder or call (513) 797-7387 ext. 114. If the weather holds out, the 162nd annual Clermont County Fair could attract over 80,000 people, according to Clermont Fair Board President Todd Slone. “People get a lot of bang for their buck at the fair,” he said. “For only $10, people can enjoy most rides, lots of exhibits, shows, grandstand entertainment, and there’s free parking!” Slone said new at the fair this year is a petting zoo that will feature both exotic and domestic animals. The county fair runs July 24 through July 30, 2011 at the fairgrounds, located at 1000 Locust Street in Owensville. “All past or current members of the Armed Forces who have military identification can get in free to the fair all week,” said Slone. “In addition, Clermont County Commissioner Bob Proud will hold his annual Salute to Veterans and Our Troops on Thursday, July 28, beginning at 6 p.m. at the fair grandstands.” Slone said Tuesday of fair week is Family Day; everyone gets a $2 discount on admission. Wednesday is Senior Day; those 60 and older have a reduced ticket price of $3. “One of the best parts of visiting the fair is the opportunity to check out all the 4H kids showing their projects,” said Slone. “There is nothing like seeing the kids’ faces when they are awarded a blue ribbon for all their hard work.” He said the popular demolition derby will be held, including a special edition on Tuesday night of fair week that will also feature a figure eight race and a lawnmower derby. Slone said that the Fair Board is always working toward making the county fair a memorable experience for families. “We are discussing possible grandstand improvements and additional parking for next year or the year after,” he said. (SORTA) bus services. CTC has proposed the rate increase, faced with a growing demand for service and a shrinking operating budget. “We are projecting an operating deficit for 2012,” said CTC Director Ben Capelle. “We have to rely on local contracts, federal grants, and passenger fares to fund CTC. Unfortunately, the only way we can keep the system operating is to increase fares.” CTC and SORTA combined provide 250,000 trips to county citizens each year. The proposed increase could impact both CTC’s express and door-to-door services, along with Metro routes 82X, 28, and 29X; CTC is responsible for much of the funding for Metro services in Clermont County. The public hearings will be held on Monday, August 1, 6 p.m., at the Amelia Branch of the Clermont County Public Library (Meeting Room), located at 58 Maple Street in Amelia; Tuesday, August 2, 6 p.m., at the Union Township Civic Center (Trustee Meeting Room), located at 4350 Aicholtz Road in Union Township; Wednesday, August 3, 10 a.m., at the Clermont County Administration Building (third floor Commissioners Meeting Room), located at 101 E. Main Street in Batavia, and on Wednesday, August 3, 6 p.m., at the Miami Township Civic Center (Trustee Meeting Room), located at 6101 Meijer Drive in Miami Township. “CTC will provide additional door-to-door service to individuals who need to ride the bus to attend the hearings,” said Capelle. Call (513) 732-7433 to schedule a ride. The proposed rate hike would increase CTC adult door-to-door fares from $4 to $5, senior and disabled fees from $2 to $2.50, child fees from $2 to $5 and student fares from $3 to $5. The CTC express route fees could increase adult fares from $3 to $4.25; adult fares for local routes could increase from $2 to $4.25. SORTA express routes could increase adult fares from $3 to $4.25. For a complete list of proposed fare increases, visit the website www.ctc.ClermontCountyOh io.gov. “According to OKI (OhioKentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments), over 45 percent of Clermont County’s population commutes into Hamilton County and Cincinnati each day,” said Capelle. “Riding the bus to and from work is an attractive option for a growing number of commuters, faced with high gas prices and parking costs. We are doing all we can to keep riding the bus an affordable option.”
