Senior airman returns from duty in Iraq Clark surprised wife, family upon his return

Longtime Bethel solicitor resigns George Leicht to focus on other duties

BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Senior Airman Jeff Clark of the United States Air Force returned from his second deployment in July, and the Goshen High School graduate returned home without telling his family. “I surprised everyone,” Clark said about his return. “No one knew I was coming I just showed up at the house.” Clark’s wife, Danielle, said she was very shocked but of course happy to see her husband walk through the door. Clark was in Iraq as part of Operation New Dawn for six and a half months. “It feels great to be home,” Clark said. Clark also has some catching up to do with his family and his 3-year-old son, Caleb, who said he was excited to see his dad when he came home. “He was talking a lot more and he knew a lot more about what was going on,” Clark said about how his little boy had changed. But he also said that pretty soon it was like he never left. “We just picked up where we left off,” Danielle said. Clark joined the Air Force right out of high school. He said the decision has changed him, made him more mature

and given him more life experience. Clark was first deployed to Qatar in 2009. He came home for a year and a half and then was deployed to Iraq. While in Iraq, Clark was in charge of patrolling the base perimeter. “It was a lot different than my last deployment,” Clark said. “The threat was actually real (in Iraq). It was nerve wracking at first.”

He also said the high temperatures and humidity Clermont County has seen recently are nothing compared to what he dealt with in Iraq. Upon his arrival home, he was also honored at the Clermont County Commissioners’ session August 3. “It’s great to feel support for my hometown and home

country,” Clark said at the ceremony. He was recognized for his commitment to the country by the commissioners, Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, Tracy Braden of The Thank You Foundation and Mark Coyle, director of the Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission. “You are a great American, great hero and a great father

to a little boy,” Congresswoman Schmidt said at the ceremony. Clark’s wife, son and mother, Brenda, where all at the ceremony along with other Clermont County residents to celebrate his return. “It feels good,” Clark said. “To know that many people feel about the military the way they do, and to be honored like that.”

George Leicht, longtime solicitor for the village of Bethel, has resigned from his duties at the village. Mayor James Dick first announced that Leicht might be resigning at the July 25 council meeting. “He’s got a whole docket he looks at,” Mayor Dick said. “I think he is overloaded at this point.” Leicht, who is also an attorney and U.S. bankruptcy trustee, has been solicitor for the village for 33 years. He said he informed council members over a month ago that it was time for someone else to take over. “As a U.S. bankruptcy trustee my work has been greater and greater,” Leicht said. “It’s not fair to the village.” And while he knows it is the right decision, Leicht said he will miss hearing people’s concerns in government and what they think is important. Leicht, who always made council members and residents laugh at meetings, said leaving his position at the vilSee Leicht, Page 2

Rivertown IGA is set to reopen in New Richmond New operator has a vision for the supermarket BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

The Rivertown IGA in New Richmond has received a makeover and was expected reopen Aug. 12 under new management. Ray Dietrich, the owner of Rivertown Market shopping center, bought the assets of the store from the previous owners, closed the store for remodeling and will now reopen with a fresh new look and a new variety of products. “I want to see the look on other peoples faces,” Dietrich said about opening day. “The whole town is excited, I think they are going to be pleased with the results.” One of the big improvements Dietrich made was replacing the floors. The process required the whole

shopping area to be broken down so the new floor could be installed. The finished product is easy to clean and covers both the shopping area and back rooms. In addition, Dietrich made a number of changes to the shopping area by expanding some of the sections, such as the beer and wine section, and including more products. “We’re going to have a variety that (people) don’t expect from a small independent grocery store,” Dietrich said. Dietrich said he wanted to expand the beer and wine section to accommodate boaters and other tourists. The section will have hardwood floors, a larger selection and even have beer from local breweries. And while the renovations have given the store a bit of a face lift, the new products are

what Dietrich is really excited about. The products are also what Dietrich has been working to attain for the grocery. “What we’ve brought in is a whole line of groceries,” Dietrich said. “High quality, low price.” The new groceries, including Best Choice and Always Save brands, are packaged just like their competitors and placed right next to them in the store. Whether it is a box of macaroni and cheese or chocolate syrup, consumers can compare ingredients and see the difference in price. “I am trying to adapt the store for what people need, not force them to buy,” Dietrich said. “People cannot afford to live otherwise.” He has also included huge dollar sections in almost every isle, which feature everything from tupperware to baby toys. “I love my dollar items!” See IGA, Page 3

Continued from page 1 Dietrich said. Dietrich, who bought into the companies whose products he’s including in the store, said IGA has agreed to let him experiment with different products. Another aesthetically pleasing change to the store is the entrance. Dietrich decided to paint a mural of New Richmond on the wall. The mural features the village as it is seen from the river. Elizabeth Zembrodt, of The Twisted Brush, is painting the mural. “I wanted the people to realize Riverside Market wants to be inclusive,” Dietrich said about placing the mural in the store. He also said he wanted residents to be able to find the things they need at the market and not have to leave town.

Although Dietrich still has a few things to finish up, he is planning to open the store Aug. 12, a few days ahead of schedule.

“They need groceries,” Dietrich said about residents. “We need to open up and let them through.”

Leicht: Solicitor resigns Continued from page 1 lage also means he is not going to be able to pull anymore practical jokes. “My wife said I might have to go to open mic night at a comedy club to get it out of my system,” Leicht said. Leicht will continue his

work as both an attorney and bankruptcy trustee at his office in the village. He said the village is a great place and he will certainly miss being solicitor. “It’s just time to move on,” Leicht said. “It’s been a great time, from the time they first appointed me.”

The first step of the journey was easy: packing. You’d been thinking about change lately, vacation or permanent. You needed to see something different outside your window, to eat food you’ve never tasted, to meet new people, to satisfy the restlessness you’d been feeling. And now - you’re packed. Ready to go. It’s a fresh start, if only for a week. Wanderlust can strike any time but what if the journey you sought was filled with goodbyes? In the new book “Beautiful Unbroken: One Nurse’s Life” by Mary Jane Nealon, you’ll read about a woman’s lifelong trip. As a child, Mary Jane Nealon decided that she wanted to be a saint. Her Jersey City childhood was spent poring over books about Molly Pitcher, Clara Barton, and Kateri Tekekwitha. Nealon wanted to be like them, to “save somebody.” So when her father offered to pay for nursing school after graduation, she saw her chance to be a heroine. Nealon enjoyed “doing small things for the body” and nursing was a good fit for her so later, antsy to leave Jersey City, she took a job in Charlottesville, Virginia. She loved caring for stroke patients and life was good, but she was back home ten months later. Her younger brother fell sick and there was no other place she could be. His death had a profound effect on her life. She couldn’t escape the guilt.

Still, she tried: she investigated volunteer work in Cambodia, but she got “scared.” Instead, she traveled to Hawaii to work and study with an antiwar poet, then she signed up to be a traveling nurse for hospitals in northern New Mexico and Savannah, Georgia. She considered Florida. She considered falling in love. She considered marriage. But home kept calling and Nealon kept returning, grief for her brother keener every time. With each new death and into each new job, she carried with her the figurative bodies she’d cared for: tooyoung boys with cancer, skeletal men with purple lesions and bright eyes, women with AIDS, alcoholics, Bowery residents. She carried them because those people, achingly in and out of Nealon’s life and gone, helped her deal with the greatest loss of all. Every once in awhile, I get a book that I want to last and last. I can’t bear to put it down, but I can’t bear to finish it, either. “Beautiful Unbroken” is one of those books. In author Mary Jane Nealon’s hands, loss is grace and there’s an awful elegance in illness. Not only does Nealon grab your heart and wring it out completely with

words, but she has a way with metaphors that will make you chuckle as she slams them into your gut. There’s a satisfying pain to reading this book, but read it you must. “No one understood that I was a poet when I sat with the dying men,” writes Nealon in describing her dual life as AIDS caretaker and writer. But when you read this outstanding book, you’ll understand that clearly. Indeed, “Beautiful Unbroken” packs a wallop. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3years-old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.

Kiwi trees are ideal for home orchards Growing Kiwi fruit has been a challenge for Ohio gardeners, because most Kiwi vines are not hardy here. We’ve found an answer for home orchardists in the Ohio valley; a self-fertile variety of hardy Kiwi called “Issai”. This particular kiwi has two major benefits; coldhardiness to zone three (-25 degrees) and no need for a second, non-fruiting kiwi as a pollinator. Hardy Kiwi have smaller fruit than regular kiwi, but the grape-sized fruit is sweeter. Also called kiwi berry, arctic kiwi, baby kiwi, dessert kiwi or cocktail kiwi, it can be eaten whole without peeling. The smooth, thin skin is edible and the ripe flesh is very sweet and juicy. Hardy Kiwi works well as an ornamental vine anywhere you might otherwise plant wisteria or trumpet vine, with the additional benefit of edible fruit. One plant can spread to 20 feet if it has some sort of trellis, pergola or fence to grow on. The challenge is that hardy kiwi plants begin growing early in the spring and the young shoots and flower buds can be damaged if the temperature drops below 32 degrees for even a short time. This means kiwi plants need protection from spring frosts

in order to fruit. Young kiwi plants are quite tender and hard to establish, so it’s best to find older, more mature plants to start with. They need full sun and prefer well-drained soil. The roots are very sensitive to fertilizer burn, so the best food is a slow-release organic fertilizer like Espoma Plant Tone. Mix some with the planting soil and then scatter it on the ground around the plant each year. Use about a pound per plant in early spring and again after blooming. All fruit from the growing kiwi vine comes from the new growth on wood that is one year old. During the winter the vine should be pruned back so that there are only one or two main vines. Pruning should be done well before growth starts in the spring to prevent vine bleeding. Train a single vine up each post to the top of the trellis by removing any side branches. Tie the vine loosely to the post rather than letting it wind around the post. Kiwi taste better when picked and refrigerated rather than ripened on the vine. Harvest them in late September before they’re ripe. Pick a few and allow them to soften for a few days. If they ripen to a suitably sweet flavor, harvest the rest and refrigerate them. Kiwi will store in the refrigerator

for five to six weeks. Several days before eating, remove them from the refrigerator so they’ll soften and ripen. Now you’re in for a treat; hardy kiwi often reach sugar levels of 20 percent and are considerably sweeter than storebought kiwifruit. If you have a home orchard, consider adding at least one “Issai” self-fertile hardy kiwi. Easier to grow and less problematic than grape vines, this delightful fruit is really something spe-

cial. Thanks to Monrovia Nurseries and also John Strang and Richard C. Funt of Ohio State University for their contributions to this article.

Thursday 8/25 Motorcycles lined the parking lots of Quaker Steak and Lube in Milford July 23, all preparing to ride in honor of Tony Castelluccio, a Glen Este graduate, and member of the U.S. Army, who died in a car accident March 6. “He was very well known in his community and I am just going to do everything I can to honor him and never forget him,” said Frank Castelluccio, Tony’s father. The ride, which included 50 riders, left Quaker Steak around 10:30 a.m. and ended at the Matt Maupin welcome pavilion at East Fork State Park around lunchtime. Castelluccio said the weather dampened things a bit when riders got poured on as they were pulling into the park, but no one complained and the sun came back out. “I think that was just Tony,” Castelluccio said about the rain. At the park, riders enjoyed food and entertainment after their ride, and Tony's friends and family members took the time to remember him, including Squirrel, one of the riders who spoke about Tony at the halfway point on the ride. “Everybody enjoyed the ride,” Castelluccio said. Castelluccio raised money at the ride to go toward an athletic scholarship at Glen Este High School. Tony played football at Glen Este and was

Events at RiverDays include sightseeing cruises, demonstrations, fireworks, a car show, dinner cruises and of course the Cardboard Boat Regatta, which will take place Saturday, Aug. 20. The regatta, which re-

East Fork Junction, One Man Electric Band and more. Feldkamp said with today's economy being like it is, RiverDays is the perfect place to spend a weekend. “It is someplace that is close, it's inexpensive to get here, once you get here it is free and there are plenty of activities for everyone to get involved in,” Feldkamp said.
