Former clerk of courts returns from Iraq David Caudill served in Bhagdad as a foreign service officer with the US Department of State Sun staff

David Caudill, former Clermont County Clerk of Courts, never expected that in just six years he could go from serving the citizens of the county to serving in Iraq. But the motivated foreign service officer did just that, and returned to the place where it all began Aug. 17. “It is great to be home in Clermont County,” Caudill said at the commissioners’ meeting. “Which has been home and will always be home.” Caudill, who grew up in Williamsburg, was appointed as clerk in 1995 and elected in 1996. He served until 2005, when he said he began feeling an itch to get involved with the United States Department of State. He left office that year and began the process of becoming a foreign service officer, whose job is to advance the interests of the U.S. all over the word, while working to keep peace and protect American citizens. From 2005 to 2007, Caudill served in Chile while studying Spanish. He returned to the U.S. to study Arabic and

then served as a political officer in Qatar until 2010. After that, Caudill said there was no reason for him not to go serve alongside his colleagues, as well as military men and women, in Iraq. His children were grown, he spoke the Arabic, he was a trained officer and he was healthy. “I felt that if I didn’t go, I would have been shirking my duty as an American,” Caudill said. “I would have never forgiven myself if I hadn’t gone.” He was sent to Baghdad that year and worked as part of a provincial reconstruction team. He said the decision was one of the best he ever made. “We engaged at the local level,” Caudill said. “We dealt with law professors, law students, police, judges, all over the province of Baghdad.” Caudill said the Iraqi people were kind and hospitable, he said one of the most important things he did in Iraq was work with young people. He said their knowledge of technology and communication is one of the best things the country has going. And while Caudill had to

withstand many of the same conditions and risks as men and women in the military he said his job in no way compared to what they are going through in the country. “I was there in harms way, but mitigated by brave people standing between me and the

enemy,” Caudill said. He also said it didn’t take long for him to be proud of the quality and professionalism of the men and women in the military. Caudill arrived home from his duties in July and the Clermont County native

Nature trail is new and improved Renovations make trail handicapped accessible BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

The O’Bannon Creek Nature Trail in Goshen Township has been a fixture for the students and staff of Goshen schools. It provides a nice walking path and the opportunity for students to explore nature during class. However, the trail was limited. The rough terrain and narrow trail didn’t accommodate wheelchairs or walkers and kept handicapped students inside when their peers were out exploring. “We wanted to figure out how to get them out there,” Julianne Nesbit, of the Clermont County Health District, said about the trail. So the health district helped secure a $25,000 grant through Hamilton County Public Health, as part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Strategic

Alliance for Health Program, to renovate the trail and make it handicapped accessible. The most significant improvement was the crushed gravel footing that was installed on the trail. The trail was also widened, and the two improvements alone will allow wheelchairs to pass over the trail with some assistance. In addition, a look-out area was constructed on the trail overlooking a creek and waterfall. Benches will be added to the area to enable a full classroom of students to have class outside. “This is important to us as a school community,” Goshen Local School District Superintendent Darrell Edwards said. “It helps to open doors to learning opportunities for all of our students.” Davey Brown, a science teacher, said the finished trail looked fantastic. He plans to

Clermont County Sheriff’s Office investigators and narcotics agents arrested two Felicity residents Aug. 16 during an operation to address thefts of air conditioning units from several churches in both Felicity and Franklin Township. Jason Ray Kaylor and Tosha Renee Bishop were both charged with one count of breaking and entering, a fifth degree felony, and one count of possessing criminal tools, a first degree misdemeanor. Both Kaylor and Bishop are also suspected of similar crimes at other locations in the county, and both will go to trial in front of the Clermont County Grand Jury. “We call them scrappers,”

Chief Deputy Rick Combs said. “They are out looking to relieve people of their precious metals.” This type of theft is on the rise in Clermont County, and Chief Deputy Combs said reports of this type of crime come in daily. “It’s hot on the trend list,” Chief Deputy Combs said. “Because a lot of people aren’t working, and some of those places aren’t secured very well.” Chief Deputy Combs said the criminals are seeking the small amounts of meltable metals, such as copper, that can be found in air conditioning units, catalytic converters in cars, piping and more. He said the criminals are targeting any location where they can get away with taking the materials. Construction sites, vacant homes, business and residential homes are all examples. Continued from page 1 Combs said criminals are even taking catalytic converters from cars in parking lots. “If it is not tied down or bolted down, they’ll take it,” Chief Deputy Combs said. “They will take it and they will scrap it.” With metal prices on the

rise and scrap metal dealers paying more for scrap, criminals are taking advantage of the situation. “As soon as we break one group, two groups or three groups up, another one starts,” Chief Deputy Combs said. “You are seeing a lot more of them.” Chief Deputy Combs said

the major problem comes from the amount of damage the scrappers cause when they remove the metal. He said they completely destroy air conditioning units, which can cost thousands of dollars, and many times damage other property as well. “They literally do not care what they destroy,” Chief Deputy Combs said. He said the crime has become popular with narcotic users who use the money to purchase drugs. And it is relatively easy to steal the metal with simple tools such as metal cutters or a hatchet. “It affects every walk in our society.” Chief Deputy Combs said about the crime. He said to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to notify law enforcement officers with any information. “Have neighbors watch out, keep areas well lit, anything you can do to add security to your property and air conditioners,” Chief Deputy Combs said.

On Sept. 5, we observe Labor Day, which is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. Of course, if you’re like most people, work is essential to your life, both as a means of personal fulfillment and as a necessity for achieving your financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But if you’re going to attain those goals, you’ll want your investments to work as hard as you do. For that to happen, you’ll need to take these steps: • Know your investment

objectives. Whether you work in an office, a manufacturing plant or any other venue, your goal is to produce a clearly identifiable result. And the same should be true for the way that you invest. In other words, you should know exactly why you own every single one of your investments — because only then will you have a clear, unified strategy for achieving your desired outcomes. • Keep investing. As a diligent worker, you show up to work every day because you know that this type of consistency is neces-

sary for success. A similar principle applies to your investing “career.” By investing steadily, year in and year out, you have a much better chance of reaching your objectives than if you were to take periodic breaks. • Build a productive portfolio. Generally speaking, the most industrious workers are also the most productive ones. And just as productivity is an asset in the working world, it’s important in the investment world, too. • Develop your investment skills. To truly be a good worker, you need a set of skills, such as initiative, the ability to make decisions and the willingness to work on a team.

Because of the community members that went above and beyond it makes it really special.” The trail is open to anyone in the community. It is located behind Goshen High School, and parking is available in the high school parking lot. “We hope this is a place where you can come and enjoy,” Superintendent Edwards said.

The village of Batavia has filed a petition to annex county facilities and agricultural land on state Route 222 on the northwest boundary of the village. The county property includes the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office, the Clermont County Municipal Court, the Clermont County Jail, and other offices. The petition is the second in recent months to add public facilities to the Clermont County seat. “We hue started talks with some county officials about village plans for renewal and improvement of the county seat, and we are looking forward to working with them on several important projects,” Batavia Mayor John Thebout said. The village and county already have approved the annexation of the Southwest Ohio Developmental Center, Clermont College, and land belonging to Richard and Donald Saylor. The village council is slated to formally accept that addition by ordinance.

Thebout said the two annexations will reclaim public facilities located in the Batavia community, but outside the village limits. Thebout said the additions will enable the community to renew infrastructure and public places and to make some major developments. The village levies a 1 percent tax on wage earnings. “Late this year we will see the first revenue from the public institutions that are joining the village, and the first substantial revenue will arrive in 2012,” Thebout said. He said the village is talking to an engineering consultant about costs for capital improvements, and the village council will begin discussing plans, designs, and projects later this fall. Some of the projects would rebuild streets and sidewalks, including water and sewer lines. A major proposal would build a new bridge over the East Fork of the Little Miami River near the new annexation territory, provide an all-directions interchange with Ohio 32, and build a connecting

road to new Clough Pike at West Main Street. The second annexation involves 286 acres on Ohio 222 at Filager Road, the Wiedenbein farm across the highway from the county complex, and the Middle East Fork Wastewater Treatment Plant on Haskell Lane. Glen Wiedenbein petitioned for the annexation, asking for village cooperation in development of the property for commercial use. Both Batavia annexations have been submitted as Type 2 Expedited Annexations. Under Ohio law, a Type 2 Expedited Annexation requires unanimous agreement of private property owners, if there are more than one. The state and its subdivisions and agencies, including counties, townships, highway departments, parks and other statecreated agencies, do not have a voice in the approval. House Bill 50 in the current session of the Ohio General Assembly would give public agencies that have employees in the annexation district the same status as private proper-

ty owners. Some members of the Clermont College staff objected to Batavia’s annexation, and some members of the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office have voiced objection to what Batavia officials call the Phase II annexation. Members of the Clermont County Board have spoken in opposition to the annexations and the enabling law, saying it is unfair. Village officials have argued that the county offices belong in the county seat, and that other public agencies that locate in the community of the county seat belong in the village, too. “It strikes me as nonsensical that public employees, people who get their pay from other people’s taxes, should object to a 1 percent earned income tax to support the public services and facilities that their offices use,” Thebout said.

We get many requests for red maple trees. It usually takes us a few minutes to narrow down exactly what kind of red maple we’re being asked for, since the term “Red Maple” could apply to several thousand distinctly different cultivars of trees. “Red maples” fall into four basic groups: true red maples, Norway maples with red foliage, upright Japanese maples, and weeping cut-leaf Japanese maples. True red maples (Acer rubrum) are magnificent shade trees with green foliage that generally grow 50 feet tall and wide, although some get much larger. The species gets its name from its flower color, though most red maples have red seeds and red fall foliage as well. There are hundreds of cultivars, varying quite a bit in shape, growth habit, leaf color, hardiness and other traits. Our favorite is “October Glory”, because it gets spectacular red fall color and keeps its leaves for many weeks after they turn red. There are other maples with red fall foliage, like the popular “Autumn Blaze”, which are not red maples at all. “Autumn Blaze” is actually a hybrid strain called Acer freemanii, a cross

between red and silver maple. Several cultivars of Norway maples (Acer platanoides) have purple or bronze foliage all season. “Crimson King” is the most popular, however “Royal Red” and “Faasen’s Black” are virtually identical. All have extremely dense, symmetrical crowns and are generally more compact than other large maples. The dense shade and surface roots under Norway Maples make it difficult to grow lawns or other plants underneath. Upright Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) make excellent ornamental trees (not shade trees) and many have red or purple foliage. “Bloodgood” is the most popular in the nursery trade, with the deepest red foliage and mature size of 15 to 20 feet tall and wide. A new variety called “Shirazz” has creamy white margins around the leaves, similar to tri-color Beech, for a very showy effect. Japanese maples do best with some protection from sun and wind. They make excellent accent plants, lending an artistic and aristocratic touch to the landscape. Dwarf weeping Japanese maples (Acer palmatum dissectum) are extremely popular for foundation plantings and accents. Many have red

‘’Tia Isa wants a car’ is good book, and tells a good story The other day, while you were playing outside, you found something small on the ground. It wasn’t much, just a penny. There’s not a lot you can do with a penny anymore. It’s not enough to buy candy or gum and it takes bunches of them to buy a toy. Even more for a new video game. But your Abuelita always says you should save your money for a rainy day and since a penny is money, you put it away. You’ve always wondered what rain has to do with anything, but… oh, well. In the new book “Tía Isa Wants a Car,” by Meg Medina, illustrated by Claudio Muñoz, a little girl learns that her pennies can take her anywhere, no matter what the weather. More than anything, Tía Isa wants a car. She says so after work, when she gets home from the bakery. It should be a green car, the color of foamy water on the beach. That color would remind Tía Isa of the ocean that lapped outside her bedroom window when she was a little girl. Maybe she should get a car with wings in the back, like sea gulls. Tía Isa wants a car, but Tío Andrés laughs at her. The family’s not rich, he reminds her. Besides, she’s got more to worry about, like cooking dinner for him. Tía Isa tries to ignore him, but she knows

She speaks to the man who sells cars, but he tells her that she doesn’t have enough cash. She says they’ll have some soon, but “soon” can take forever. Still, there are always other ways. Señor Leo might have a few odd jobs he’d pay to finish. La vieja Maria might need someone to help feed her windowsill cats. Miss Amy at la biblioteca has been asking for español lessons. Tía Isa wants a car, but she’s getting sad. Why does saving money take so long? Will she ever have enough to vamos on her own four wheels? She might – with just a little help. Like most of us, kids enjoy getting new possessions. And like many of us, they have a hard time saving up for a big want. What they’ll see in this book just might inspire them, though. “Tía Isa Wants a Car” tells the cute story of doing some-

I loved the way author Meg Medina gives her little heroine a can-do attitude in helping her Tía, along with the satisfaction of seeing her efforts make a difference. The illustrations by Claudio Muñoz are wonderfully expressive, further allowing the love between Tía and sobrina shine through. Little spendthrifts ages 3 to

“Welcome Center improves lives of customers and caregivers” Families find joy and peace of mind at Welcome Center.

B R O A D S H E E T E V E N

Editor’s Note: No last names are being used to protect the privacy of seniors and their families. After attending a caregiver support meeting, Patti stops by the Adult Day Service Welcome Center, sponsored by Clermont Senior Services, for a short visit with her mother, Marjorie. She stands by her mother seated at a table in one of the Center’s rooms, smiles lovingly at her, and then gently brushes her hair. “I will do whatever I have to do for my mom because she did everything for me,” Patti says. Her eyes start to glisten. Patti and her husband live in Mason where they have their own business. She makes the morning commute between her home and her mother’s and stepfather’s home in Bethel at least three times a week. Most of those mornings she helps get her mother ready so Marjorie can catch the CSS bus that takes her to the Welcome Center where she spends the day. Her mother is among 90 Welcome Center customers diagnosed with early stages

of Alzheimer’s and dementia, have experienced a stroke, or are challenged by other debilitating health issues. Although they were aware that Marjorie needed socialization and stimulation in her life to help offset the complications of her disease, her daughters, son, and daughter-in-law did not know who or where to turn to for help. Patti learned about the Welcome Center from friends and through the caregiver support group. Marjorie began attending the center in June. It has relieved a lot of stress for her family, allowing her grown children more time to take care of their own family responsibilities. Patti and her siblings are pleased with the positive affect the Welcome Center has had on their mom. “We have seen a big change in Mom’s attitude. She loves to come here,” Patti says. “She is more aware of what is happening and is smiling more.” Marjorie comments,” I like to be with the people here.” She says she especially likes the music, enter-

Customer Comments... The Adult Day Service Welcome Center provides a safe, social environment for dozens of Clermont County seniors experiencing memory loss or complications from other disabling conditions. It also gives their caregivers more time to concentrate on work or other family responsibilities. Below are comments from some of the seniors who regularly attend the center: Dick M. – “I see a lot of good things happening here.” Sallie – “I love everything about the Welcome Center. I was a little apprehensive when I first came here, but I now think it is the perfect place for me.” Alice – “It is a wonderful place for me to come. You have things to do to help keep you going in old age.” Kenny – “It’s like coming back home – to the home you had when you were younger.”

tainment and the weekly Bible Study. Patti feels things are a lot better now. “The Welcome Center is a very caring place and the professional staff is exceptional. It gives my family peace of mind knowing Mom is being taken care of so well,” she says. Patti’s sister-in-law, Paige, adds, “It has given her back her life.”

Nellie – “When I first saw people playing Noodle Ball (batting a beach ball with a swimming noodle), I thought it was silly, but I now love it. After I had my surgery I told my son that I was coming back to the Welcome Center and to the same room with the same nice ladies. If I have to be somewhere (during the day), this is the place I want to be.” Gertrude – “I like seeing and talking to people and having fun. It’s better than staying home all day.” For information on the Adult Day Service Welcome Center, please call 536-4118.

Professional couple appreciates Welcome Center People from all walks of life attend the Adult Day Service Welcome Center, a friendly and safe respite facility sponsored by Clermont Senior Services. Trained staff assists customers diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and those who have experienced a stroke or are challenged by other debilitating health issues. Audrey and Mason met in graduate school where Audrey earned two master degrees in public health & safety and biology & science. Mason graduated with an engineering degree. Married for 36 years, they are retired empty nesters with two grown children.

They like to travel, and Audrey enjoys spending time with their grandchildren. Their sister-in-law first introduced them to the ADS Welcome Center where Audrey’s mother attended until her death two years ago. Audrey started attending in early 2010 and, despite challenges from memory loss, she assists with distributing craft supplies and cleaning up after lunch. “I look forward to coming here,” Audrey says. “I enjoy the structured schedule and keeping busy. The people are so nice and caring and I’ve made friends.” Mason appreciates the Welcome Center. “As her

Shall We Gather at the River A Festival of Hymns Saturday, September 24th from 10am to 12:30pm at the Outdoor Amphitheater in New Richmond, Ohio Do you love Praising God in Song? Then grab a lawn chair, and come on out and join us in this beautiful setting along the Ohio River. BY DR. DAN MEAKIN One aspect of canine care and keeping that is the most misunderstood is that of proper nutrition. Years ago, dogs were fed exclusively from the table and many of them seemed to thrive. Those were actually the ones who were lucky enough to receive, by chance, the proper ratio of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, and minerals. People remember those dogs that lived to a ripe old age and tend to forget the extremely high puppy death rate and that many dogs died young due to nutrition-related problems. With the coming of modern food processing techniques and research into nutrition, we have available many complete, pre-packaged diets in a variety of forms. We no longer need to feed our pets in a haphazard manner from the table! Many people feel that dogs need some variety to their diet, but the fact is that dogs thrive on monotony in their diets. Variety in the diet is entirely unnecessary, and is in fact how a number of feeding-related behavior problems arise. Among these problems are begging (especially from the table,) extreme hyperness, and obesity, which is probably the most common nutritional problem seen in pet dogs and cats. The source of the problem is simple to discern – the dog is receiving too many calories for its energy needs. A dog of normal weight can often be expected to outlive its obese counterpart by as much as 40 percent. Feeding good quality dog food will enhance your pet's health and longevity. There are dozens of types and brands of dog food to choose from, and trying to choose the right one can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you choose the best food one for your dog: • Choose the food that is formulated for your pet’s life stage (puppy, senior, adult)

and type (small breed, giant breed). From three weeks of age up to 20 weeks, your puppy's growth rate is astronomical, and his food intake must keep up. Giant breed puppies pose a special problem. For puppies of large or giant breeds, look for special foods of lower nutrient density. With these dogs, rapid growth can exacerbate degenerative hip problems or joint disease. Although hip dysplasia is a genetic problem, overfeeding at a young age can contribute to it. These breeds are prone to skeletal problems if not fed properly during their growing phase. Senior pet foods usually supply important ingredients such as glucosamine for joint health and contain fewer calories to compensate for less active pet and higher-quality proteins for easier digestion. Read the label. As with human food labels, pet food labels are regulated by the federal government, the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture. The list of ingredients must be in descending order. This means that the most prevalent part of the diet is listed first and then followed by each ingredient in order by weight. How the product is listed on the label is also strictly regulated. In order to call something "Beef for Dogs," at least 95 percent of the product must be the named meat. If the name has a combination of meats, such as "Chicken and Liver," the two products together must be 95 percent of the product with the first ingredient listed more prevalent. If the amount of the meat is over 25 percent but less than 95 percent, a qualifier must be added. The word dinner is a commonly added qualifier but

platter, entrée, nuggets and formula are also common. Another rule regarding product name is the use of "with." In pet food such as "Dog Food with Chicken," since the word "chicken" follows "with," that food must have at least three percent of the food as chicken. This wording can fool some people. "Beef Dog Food" is very different than "Dog Food with Beef." The first has 95 percent beef. The second only has three percent beef. To make matters even more confusing is everything on the side of a bag can only be compared on a “Dry matter basis”. What this means is if you take all the water away what is left is the dry matter basis of the food. Canned food (with 50% water) can appear a lot different unless comparisons are made on a dry matter basis. Feed the best quality food you can afford. The saying “You get what you pay for” is very true in pet food. Good ingredients cost money, no way around it. The feeding requirements are less for a quality food, so it’s not as expensive as it seems. Most dry dog food is soybean, corn or rice based. Non-meat products in dog food tend to pass right through the dog, creating more waste in the form of loose stools than when a quality dog food is fed. Less waste to clean up from the yard is always a good thing for dog owners! Higher quality dry dog food has meat, chicken or fishmeal listed as the main ingredients. Some dry dog food eliminates grains all together or is completely organic. Check with your veterinarian for their specific preference for your individual dog.
