Showmanship classes make impact on youth 4-H members work hard even before competition begins at the county fair Sun staff

Early in the morning during the Clermont County Fair, when the rides are closed and many school-age children are still tucked in their beds, the 4-H barns are bustling with activity. There are goats to be fed, horses to be groomed, and stalls to be mucked. The chores are done without complaint because they have become routine for the 4-H members involved in raising animals. “She gets up every morning at six and feeds,” Brian Brandenburg, of Felicity, said about his daughter Kolbie. Kolbie, 11, of the Felicity Haystack Bunch 4-H club, raises sheep and competed in several showmanship classes at the fair using the sheep she takes care of every day. “I like to do showmanship classes because I can watch the older kids do it and it teaches me a lot more,” Kolbie said. “And I can see how good I am with my sheep.” Kolbie said while this is her third year showing, it is her first year raising her own sheep. Raising the sheep involved more work, but also

allowed her to work with the sheep frequently so she could train them to respond to her touch. “I’ve improved,” Kolbie said about the progress she’s made over the years. “It helped me learn that if you really try hard you can get something done. It teaches you good responsibility.” Many of the children participating in showmanship display this same responsibility and attitude. Not only do they have to care for their animals and develop a relationship with them, but they also have to represent their club in a positive way and learn how to interact with judges. “I have changed so much,” Taylor Wilkens, 13, of the Equine Club, said about the impact of showing horses. “I have learned so much.” Wilkens has been showing for six years and has shown several different horses. She said taking care of horses requires a lot of patience and is time consuming. In the next barn over, Devon Christensen, 13, of the Rump Roast Riders 4-H team, is cleaning up hay and preparing for his afternoon showmanship class. Christensen doesn’t deny that raising cows and competing in showman-

ship classes is challenging, but he enjoys the hobby. “It’s something to do in the summer instead of sitting around and playing video games like every other kid does,” Christensen said. Christensen’s step-father got him into showmanship and he has become responsible for nearly every aspect.

He helped raise the cattle, halter-broke them, cleaned them and practiced showing them before coming to compete. Even after three years, Christensen said he is still nervous when he goes into the show ring. But he has learned more about what judges are looking for over the years, and he said he has learned

from his mistakes that working hard ahead of time pays off. “This year I decided ‘I am going to work my butt off,’” Christensen said. “And I placed.” It is obvious that Christensen has enjoyed the rewards of showmanship classes since he became

involved in 4-H, and although he knows he could be spending his summer days riding rides at the fair instead of cleaning his cattle, he keeps setting higher goals to accomplish. “It’s taught me how to work for things in life,” Christensen said.

Felicity graduate named Big Sister of the year BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

When Amanda White was in middle school, she committed to helping her community through a national program called Youth for Justice. Since then, the recent Felicity graduate has helped numerous students and has been awarded for her efforts. After White joined Youth for Justice with several other gifted and talented students at Felicity Middle School, the group decided that they wanted to focus on young people in the community. “We didn’t like how our young people at Felicity didn’t have anyone to look up to,” White said. So the group started planning a program that would allow older students to bond with younger students at the school. The older students would be there to listen to the younger students and serve as

mentors to them. White said the idea was for the program to be similar to Big Brothers Big Sisters, which is an organization with a mission to help children reach their potential. And with the encouragement of Felicity teachers, White reached out to the organization to help get the program running at school. Debbie Mollette, schoolbased program coordinator for the organization, helped White and the other Youth for Justice students plan a program for Felicity. The Big Brothers Big Sisters’ school-based program is designed to allow children to interact with their big brother or big sister at school and on a fixed schedule, with the goal being to keep the interactions consistent. White said the program was set up to be after school so that students could come in, have a snack, do homework

and play games, all right alongside their big brother or big sister, who they would develop a relationship with. By the time the details were worked out and a plan was put into action, White was a freshman in high school, and freshman year became the first year students could participate as big brothers or big sisters. “The intention of the program is to get someone in middle school, when they are struggling and don’t have a mentor,” White said. “Once they pass into high school, they become the mentor.” White’s big sister experience began with a 10-year-old named Dustin. White said spending time with Dustin made her realize that there is always more to learn. She said he became part of her life and she looked forward to Thursday afternoons when she got to see him. HealthSource of Ohio is celebrating National Health Center Week 2011 as part of a weeklong campaign (Aug. 713) to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s Health Centers as local solutions. To mark the event HSO will be hosting a Kids’ corner at their Eastgate Pediatrics office on Monday, Aug. 8 from 1-3 pm. There will be face painting, reading and games to entertain the kids and staff will be available to answer any questions you may have about HealthSource or health centers in general. The theme of this year’s NHCW is “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Serving Locally, Leading Nationally,” to underscore how health centers deliver a unique approach that targets health needs and saves taxpayer dollars. They are strong partnerships of people, governments and communities who work together to meet the unique and diverse health conditions of the community. One of the bright spots in America’s health care system, health

centers provide a health care home to over 23 million people at 8,000 sites nationwide. Locally, HealthSource of Ohio provides care to 55,000 patients at their 13 sites. The health center model of care was rated as one of the most effective programs by thenPresident George W. Bush’s Office of Management and Budget. Indeed, presidents from both parties and Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have longrecognized the value of health centers and supported their expansion. Health centers are on track to expand their care to 40 million people over the next five years. With more health care homes in communities, we can reduce health care costs and unnecessary hospitalizations and visits to the hospital emergency rooms. According to the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), there are 60 million people in the country with limited or no access to primary care providers – a trend that shows no sign of improving with the economic

recession. Every day in our waiting rooms I witness the value of having a health care home,” said Kim Patton, CEO. “When people have a place to go for regular care, they use it and stay healthier. We provide a range of services onsite – primary care services, pediatrics, pharmacy, dentistry, even mental health services. Our patients not only get the care they need under one roof, but they are treated as individuals, with dignity and respect. This is what health care should be, and what we celebrate during National Health Center Week.” Now more than ever public support is needed for health centers as Congress attempts to reduce the budget deficit with spending cuts to the program and changes to Medicaid that could further reduce access to preventive care for millions of people. WIN Committee to host tea breakfast Women from the community are invited to network and relax at the Cincinnati Nature Center while enjoying a traditional tea breakfast. The tea is a new event sponsored by the Women’s Initiative Network Committee (WIN) of the Clermont County Chamber of Commerce. The tea and program, "Natural Treasures of the Cincinnati Nature Center" will be held from 8 - 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Cincinnati Nature Center’s Krippendorf Lodge. “One of the elements of the WIN Committee’s mission statement is to provide networking opportunities,” said Cyn Macke, Director of Member Services. “This new event will allow women of the community an opportunity to meet informally, as they relax over tea.” Macke expects the event to sell out as did the last two events of the WIN Committee. The morning’s program will be presented by Connie O’Connor, Director of Education and Visitor Services. O’Connor will speak about the history of CNC and the variety of programs they offer for adults through “NatureVersity.” Summer Tyler, a member of the tea event committee, hopes to see new women from the area at the event. She said “I hope this inexpensive breakfast program will reach women who traditionally don’t attend networking events. It is an ideal opportunity for employers to encourage their staff such as: junior management, support staff and non-sales staff, to attend. It’s also a great way to say thank you to clients, by inviting them to attend as well.” The event is $15 per person. The cost includes the program and the tea breakfast buffet. Members of the Women’s Initiative Committee include: Committee Chair, Cathy Sahlfeld, Workforce One of Clermont County; Peggy A’Hearn, Mercy Health Partners, Sue Day, Hytech Automotive Services;

The Ohio High School Athletic Association is sponsoring two scholarships to the clinic and it will pay the registration fees of the first two adults to register who bring with them a high school student announcer. The clinics will address the announcer’s role, announcing expectations, Do’s and Don’ts of announcing football, how to handle emergency situations, as well as scripting and working with a spotter. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in voice training and announcing exercises. A football official will review new rule changes, officials’ hand signals, and ways that officials and announcers can work better together. “Sports public address announcers should enhance the spectators enjoyment of the game without inserting themselves,” said Brad Rumble, NASPAA Executive Director.. SENIOR COMMUNITY

In order to enjoy the spectacular blooms of Clematis, you need to understand two key points. First, Clematis needs lots of sun but wants cool, moist soil to grow in. Second, Clematis vines want to climb, and are happiest when they can run as high as possible during their growing season. The best location for most Clematis is against a high fence or wall in full sun, but some large-flowered hybrids fade badly if they get too much sun and these should be planted in where they’ll get morning sun only or partial shade. Clematis roots should be in cool, moist, rich soil, without competition from shrub or tree roots. Roots should be well protected from damage or disturbance. Old-fashioned chicken wire makes the best support for Clematis vines, since they can’t grasp thick branches or heavy trellising. If you use a decorative trellis, attach chicken wire to the back. Established Clematis vines can easily climb 10 to 15 feet each season, so give them as tall a structure as you possibly can. Allow a few inches of ventilation space behind your trellis. Clematis plants are often

(937) 444-3043

sold “bare root” or in tiny pots. It’s well worth it to get larger plants with a big root system; these will perform much better much sooner. Clematis has a very large root system, so dig a planting hole as large as possible (two feet deep and wide is ideal). Pretend you’re planting a tree. Mix plenty of composted manure and peat moss with the planting soil, plus some Plant Tone or similar perennial fertilizer. Plant with the crown one to two inches below the soil surface. Use groundcover plants or mulch to keep the sun off the root zone; shallow-rooted perennials like creeping phlox, hardy geranium, candytuft, or vinca vines cool the soil without competing. In dry seasons, water deeply once a week. Early-flowering Clematis and large-flowered hybrids bloom in spring, from buds produced the previous season. Prune these back as soon as possible after bloom but don’t cut into the woody trunks. Prune again in February or March by removing dead and weak stems, then cut back remaining stems to the topmost pair of large, plump green buds. Late-flowering Clematis bloom on the last two to three feet of the current season's growth. Some types begin blooming in mid-June and continue into the fall. This is the easiest group to prune since no old wood needs to be maintained. In February or March cut each stem to a height of about two to three feet, including some good stems and buds. Eventually the length of the bare stem at the base will increase as the vine matures.

Tricks for success with Clematis

Clematis loves to climb – the bigger the trellis the bigger the plant. (GoodSeed Farm photo)

Fall-blooming Clematis is a different plant entirely. Also called Sweet Autumn Clematis, this is a fast-growing hardy vine covered with small white blooms with an intense sweet smell. It’s great for covering chain-link fences with a downy blanket. It is such an aggressive climber it can be a bit of a nuisance, and it can also self-

seed, but in the right spot it’s a terrific performer and a traditional garden classic. Steve Boehme is the owner of GoodSeed Farm Nursery & Landscape, located on Old State Route 32 three miles west of Peebles. More information is available online at www.goodseedfarm.com or call (937) 587-7021.

Continued from page 1 “I saw Dustin become who he was,” White said. “And it was awesome.” She said similar things happened with other big brothers and big sisters, including a duo who completely changed their relationship by the end of the final year. “To see something go from a teacher-student relationship to a best friend relationship is not something you see everyday,” White said. “It’s great to see that switch in the heart from ‘I don’t trust you’ to ‘I can tell you anything.’” Unfortunately, White did not get be Dustin’s big sister all four years of high school. Dustin had to move before White’s fourth year in the program, and White said it was really hard knowing she wouldn’t have contact with him anymore. “You’re not supposed to have communication outside of the program because it is site based,” White said. And while she had to say goodbye to Dustin, she was assigned a new little brother, Shaun, also 10 years old. White was able to form a relationship with Shaun in her last year at Felicity, and during that time she received the Big Sister of the Year award for her commitment to both creating and supporting the program at Felicity. White was humble about winning the award and said said if more people did their job supporting children and making sure they always have someone to talk to, the award wouldn’t be as big of a deal. “I realize it wasn’t easy,” White said about the effort she put into the program. “But it seemed like I was doing what I needed to do.”

White graduated from Felicity High School this spring, and will be attending Berea College in Kentucky this fall. White decided not to have a little brother or little sister at college because of time and money commitments. She plans to become a surgeon and said being a big sister in college would be difficult. “Once I start my job as a surgeon, I will do the community based (program),” White said. For now, she said she hopes she can return to Felicity every once in a while to see where the program is going and how people have changed. She has high hopes for the program improving since the little brothers and little sisters will becoming big brothers and big sisters soon. “As long as people stay committed and put in the effort for the relationship it will flourish greatly,” White said. She encouraged people to stick with the program and work through the first year, which can be difficult. “You don’t have that bond and it’s going to be rough,” White said. “But the longer you stay with it the better it becomes. It becomes a very friendly, very loving relationship.”

performed after a child is able to live outside the mother.” According to the “Ohio Viable Infants Protection Act,” if a woman wants an

abortion and her unborn child is 20 weeks or older, a doctor must first examine the child to determine if he or she is viable. If the child is viable,

the abortion is prohibited except in the case of a medical emergency or if the woman has a serious physical health condition.

Last summer volunteers from Clermont County based Cincy Kids 4 Kids hosted a back to school party for patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati. One of the patients, Jimmy made a huge impression on the volunteers and a 5k walk was initiated in his honor. “As soon as Jimmy walked into the room for our party I knew our organization could do more,” said Missy Bastin, president of Cincy Kids 4 Kids, a Union Twp. organization dedicated to helping children in the area. “I was so impressed that a young man who has been through so much in his life walked in all by himself, head up and confident. To me this says so much about what Shriners Hospitals for Children does for its patients. You do not just fix them from the outside; you fix them on the inside. We could all learn from these kids and their families.” Jimmy, who is originally from China, is now living in Lebanon, Ohio and just graduated from high school. His path to the Cincinnati area and Shriners Hospitals for Children was not easy.

DEADLINE: MONDAY @ 10:00 AM

Jimmy was injured when a gas lamp caught fire at his parent’s rural home in China. Without adequate medical care, he lived in a convent for several months before China Care, an organization devoted to helping young people from China, brought Jimmy to the United States and Shriners Hospitals for Children for reconstructive plastic surgery. For more information and a registration form for the walk, visit www.Cincykids4kids.org. Sponsorship and donation opportunities are available to support the walk from Missy at cincykids4kids@zoomtown.com. All proceeds benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati.

State Representatives Joe Uecker (R-Loveland) and Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) attended Governor Kasich’s signing of House Bill 78 on July 20, which will protect the lives of unborn babies after the viability of the child is confirmed. “So many bills are measured in economic impact, measured in dollars. House Bill 78 will be measured in lives,” said Roegner, who was joined at the bill signing by her three daughters: Katherine, age ten; Kaitlyn, age eight; and Kristine, age five. “This law saves the lives of hundreds of babies each year—babies that will contribute to society and could become future doctors, teachers, nurses, or engineers. They could become mothers and fathers themselves someday. It was truly a blessing to be a part of this historic day.” “Ohio took an important step in protecting our most vulnerable citizens, our unborn,” Uecker said. “With this legislation that received bipartisan support being signed into law, it will save hundreds of babies each year. While our work is not done, this legislation will prevent the most egregious of abortions from taking place, those

However, if you’re going to do a good job of building financial assets for retirement, you really can’t afford to play “wait-and-see” with interest rates. Instead, consider the following moves: • Rebalance your portfolio. No matter what your situation, it’s a good idea to periodically rebalance your investment portfolio to help ensure it still reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. If you’re concerned about low rates harming your future investment income, you have more reason than ever to review your portfolio and make adjustments as needed, relative to your objectives. For example, if it seems that your portfolio has become “overweighted” in any one vehicle, you may need to change your investment mix, keeping in mind your individual risk tolerance.

• Redefine “retirement.” Retiring from one career doesn’t have to mean retiring from work altogether. If you decide to work part time, do some consulting or even open your own small business, you may be able to earn enough income to take some of the “pressure” off your investment portfolio in terms of providing you with the money you need to live on during retirement. Also, by working during your nominal retirement years, you may be able to delay taking Social Security until you’re a little older, when your monthly checks can be larger. • Review your withdrawal strategy. During your retirement, the amount you choose to withdraw from your investments each year will depend on several factors, including the size of your portfolio and the amount of income it is providing. As

you chart your retirement strategy, you’ll need to factor in a realistic withdrawal rate. • Re-examine sources of investment income. You may want part of your retirement income to come from investments that offer protection of principal. If so, you don’t have to settle for the lowestrate vehicles. By looking at the various alternatives and blending them with your overall portfolio, you may be able to boost your income without significantly increasing your investment risk. In short, just because interest rates are low, you don’t have to lower your retirement expectations — as long as you plan ahead and explore your options.

Clermont County’s League for Animal Welfare will host its Sixth Annual Wine & Whiskers Tasting & Auction from 7 - 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. The annual event will be held at the Greenacres Arts Center in the Village of Indian Hill, 8400 Blome Road, Cincinnati, OH 45243. League Board Member and Event Committee Chair Diann Cox says guests can enjoy a wider range of distinctive wines for sampling as well as more appetizers and decadent desserts than previous years. “This year, our board decided to make the wine tasting and auction its signature event,” explains Cox, “so our committee has been working diligently to make that decision a reality with more wines to sample and more appetizers and desserts.” Cox noted that this year’s

event will include a “Man Cave” with beer and auction items ideal for men and a “Diva Den” for featuring champagne and auction items ideal for divas. The committee is also expanding the most popular silent auction item – art created by pets at the League’s no-kill shelter. Cost for the event is $50 per person for early bird registration (purchased before Oct. 7) and $65 per person after Oct. 7. Sponsorship opportunities at various levels are available. To register for the event or for more information about the event or sponsorship opportunities, visit www.lfaw.org or call the League for Animal Welfare at (513) 735-0299. All proceeds are used to support the homeless animals throughout Greater Cincinnati. The League is located at 4193 Taylor Road in Batavia.

Over the past few years, if you’ve taken out a mortgage or another consumer loan, you’ve probably welcomed the low interest rates you may have received. But as an investor, if you’ve kept any retirement savings in fixedrate investment vehicles, you may have seen low rates in a less favorable light. And that’s why it may be time for you take a closer look at your financial strategy for working toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Of course, you can always hope that interest rates will rise, and perhaps they will. As you may know, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at record lows in recent years to stimulate lending and thereby boost the economy. But rates can’t get much lower, and if inflation were to heat up, the Fed could reverse course by starting to raise rates.
