Goodwill rehabilitation comes to Clermont New location provides jobs for disabled adults closer to home on the east side Sun staff

There is a new Goodwill in town, but it is not a typical store. It is the Eastside Rehabilitation Services Center, and the new location is making it possible for disabled adults to work closer to home. “This is our first site location out here,” Leslie McCurley, assistant director of developmental disabilities for Goodwill, said. “We want to be able to be responsive to the community and be able to serve people in their communities.” The center was opened thanks to a group effort from Goodwill, Southwest Ohio Developmental Center and both the Hamilton and Clermont county boards of developmental disabilities. “We are thrilled about the variety of work options we are able to offer both to Clermont as well as Hamilton County residents that live on the east side of Cincinnati,” McCurley said. The center is located off Grissom Drive in Batavia, near the Clermont County

Board of Developmental Disabilities' Grissom Building. Participants from both Hamilton and Clermont counties can utilize the center, and transportation is provided. Usually the work day begins around 8:30 a.m. and ends around 3 p.m. So far the center has 19 participants, and will be able to serve more. Individuals also have the option of utilizing the Beechmont Goodwill store location to learn processing and customer service skills. When participants come to the new center, they are able to work on assembly and packaging tasks, which include putting things together, organizing parts for other companies and preparing clothing and other items for the shelves of the Goodwill stores. “I basically like working for people,” Kevin Brown, a participant at the center, said about working there. “I know I am making a difference to people in their lives. That's why I feel good doing this job.” Brown said he is head of janitorial and maintenance

services at the center and also works on assembly. He, like all participants, is paid for his work. In addition to the work area of the center, participants are also able to enjoy a recreation

room and lunch room, where they can take breaks. “It's a place where I can come and cool off and get away,” Brown said about the break room. While the center was

opened to help give disabled adults a new, closer location to work and make money, Goodwill's ultimate goal for their centers is to help participants become experienced in the workplace.

“The goal is to get them a job,” Michael Flannery, public information officer for Ohio Valley Goodwill, said. “They learn life skills along with everything else in order to get a job.”

Augusta Boat ramp improvements complete Bethel Permanent dock installed BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

The village of New Richmond completed several improvements to the Augusta Street boat ramp in August, which included the construction of a permanent boat dock that can be used year round. Two grants from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft paid for most of the improvements. The village received $133,984 in grants to be used for the project, which had a total cost of $149,082. Village council members approved the project at their April 12 meeting and Administrator Dave Kennedy put together a contract for the work immediately after the meeting.

“This goes beyond New Richmond,” Kennedy said about the improvements. “The boat ramp is used by people all over Clermont County and Brown County. It is responsible for bringing people to the river.” Before the project, the village's wooden dock was the only access and was removed during the winter months. The new dock is permanent and will allow for year-round launching. “During the summer months, when the river is at pool stage, we have two lanes for boat launching,” Kennedy said about adding another dock. “Which helps get the boaters out into the river quicker.” In addition, Kennedy said holes in the concrete of the underwater portion of the Augusta Street boat ramp were causing problems for boaters. Work was done to repair the holes and correct

Kennedy said the improvements benefit both recreational boaters and fisherman that utilize Ohio River via New Richmond. “The river and the boat

dock are an economic development tool for the village,” Kennedy said. “This extends that tool for a longer period of time.”

The village of Bethel has filled long-time solicitor George Leicht's position after he retired in August. Julia Carney has taken over as solicitor for the village and said she is excited about her new responsibilities and is looking forward to the opportunity. “I have a background in municipal law so I am familiar with many of the issues that affect villages and cities,” Carney said. Widows of World War II veterans in Clermont County will receive Kroger gift cards, following the donation of $1,400 from the Eastern Hills Rod, Gun, and Conservation Club. The Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission accepted the donation at their Aug. 10 meeting. “We really appreciate the donation,” said Clermont

Veterans’ Service Office Director Dan Bare. “The widows of our local WWII veterans are so deserving of this gift; it will be our pleasure to ensure the cards are distributed to those who need them most.” “The EHRGCC raised the money by holding a Sporting Women in the Outdoors event in July,” said Nancy Bicknell with the group. “We had 120

women take part in a day that including many sporting activities, food, and fellowship.” For more information about the EHRGCC, visit the website www.SportingWomen.org. Contact the Clermont County Veterans’ Service Office at (513) 732-7363 or visit the website www.ClermontCountyVete rans.com.

River Sweep poster contest being held Students in primary and secondary schools (public and private, K-12) are invited to design a poster for the 23rd annual River Sweep 2012. Fifteen prizes will be awarded. The grand prize is a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, and the school representing the grand prize winner will also receive an award. A $500 U.S. Savings Bond will be presented to the student with the winning design for the official River Sweep t-shirt. Thirteen $50 U.S. Savings Bonds will be awarded to one winner at each grade level. The poster contest is open to students living in or attending schools in counties bordering the Ohio River, or counties participating in the River Sweep. This includes all counties along the Ohio River in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. The 23rd annual River Sweep will be held Saturday, June 16, 2012. River Sweep is a one-day cleanup project for the Ohio River and its tributaries. The Sweep covers nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline from Pittsburgh, PA, to Cairo, IL, and averages more than 20,000 volunteers a year. Trash collected during the Sweep has included cars, tires, furniture, toys, a piano, and a variety of other items. All trash collected is either recycled or placed in approved landfills. River Sweep is held to create an awareness of water quality problems caused by litter and illegal dumping.

The poster contest, held in conjunction with River Sweep, is one way to spread the word about litter prevention. Posters submitted for the contest should reflect this goal and focus on encouraging volunteer participation. The deadline for the River

Sweep Poster Contest is Dec. 14. For more information about the River Sweep Poster Contest, or for complete contest rules and regulations, contact Jeanne Ison at 1-800-359-3977, or visit the Commission’s website at www.orsanco.org.

Grandparents Day falls on Sept. 11 this year. While not as widely observed as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, Grandparents Day nonetheless serves a valuable purpose in reminding us of the importance of grandparents in the lives of their grandchildren. If you’re a grandparent yourself, you already know the joy your grandchildren bring you, and through the years, you have probably been generous with them in many ways. At the same time, though, you probably need to strike a balance between your heartfelt gifts and your financial goals. It can be challenging to achieve that balance. For one thing, you and your fellow grandparents have not been stingy in your giving over the past several years. America’s grandparents provided an estimated $370 billion in financial support to their grandchildren between 2004 and 2009, according to a survey by the MetLife Mature Visit

The Clermont Sun

Market Institute. This averages out to $8,661 per grandparent household over that same period. However, many of these same grandparents may not be accumulating sufficient financial resources to enjoy the retirement lifestyle they’ve envisioned. In fact, the median balance of retirement accounts for 55to 64-year-olds is only about $100,000, according to the Center for Retirement Research. That’s not a lot of money for an age group that could spend two or even three decades in retirement. So, as a grandparent, what steps might you take to bolster your retirement savings while simultaneously helping your grandchildren? Here are a few ideas: • Maintain permanent life insurance. Once your children are grown, you may feel less compelled to carry life insur-

you to enjoy a comfortable retirement. As always, you need to do what makes sense for your situation. You may find there are ways to help both your grandchildren and yourself.

You can fund your IRA with virtually any type of investment, such as stocks, bonds and government securities, and your earnings grow tax free, provided you don’t take withdrawals until you’re at least age 59? and you’ve held your account at least five years. Your grandchildren may appreciate your generosity, but they’ll also no doubt want

“I believe in God.” Most people have no hesitation in making that statement. In fact, recent polls say that nearly 90% of Americans believe in God. But what about Jesus? Was He really the Son of God? Was His mother really a virgin? Did He really come back to life after being executed? Is Jesus alive today? Can He do the same miracles now that He did then? On Sunday, September 18th, at 11:00 a.m. George Goodman will be speaking on the pursuit of living a life like Jesus Christ. George has a passion for seeing the world changed by the love of Christ and the power of the resurrection. He believes that Jesus has the ability to change you from the inside out and fix any physical, emotional, or spiritual problem in your life. If you would like to know more about the life of Christ, His teachings, and the role He can play in your life, George will be ready to share that with you on the 18th!

other period interpreters will be walking the grounds to meet visitors. Oh, don’t forget to come dressed in your best western bib and tucker as there will be a costume contest daily at 1 p.m. sharp. The town will also be abuzz with period music. Enjoy the sounds of the 1800’s with Changing Tymes and Gunpowder Creek, Bob Ford and The Ragamuffins, as well as Raison d’Etre, a trio mixing traditional folk songs with a capella swing tunes and Shaker hymns. Raison d’Etre will be releasing a cowgirls song CD at this year’s Festival! Don’t miss that! Other performers will be

about town as well. Professor Faris’ Magic show will amaze, bewilder and astonish you. While bending an elbow with a beer, sarsaparilla or root beer at the Long Branch Saloon, folks’ll no doubt get a “kick” out of Madam Gigi’s Outrageous French Cancan Dancers. After whetting your whistle, head into town to the general outfitting store for some essentials and stock up on some (toy) guns for the mean streets of Dodge. Patrons can enjoy our very own Medicine Show or visit the dance hall, western clothing store, vintage photo emporium and old-fashioned candy store.

The Old West Festival’s a grand time for the kids, too. At 10:15 a.m. daily, the kiddies can get sworn in as town deputies. They will also enjoy old-timey puppet shows, storytelling and sing-a-longs. The youngsters can also participate in historic games, pan for gold, take a ride on the Abigail Express train, ride horses or ponies and cross the frontier in a covered wagon. Rodeo drill teams return this year as well as Theme Weekends: Civil War Sept. 10-11; Native American Sept. 17-18; Steampunk Sept. 2425; Frontier Scouts Oct. 1-2; and America’s Pastime Oct. 8-9. This year, the Old West

Festival welcomes The Pickled Brothers Circus, a comedy circus stunt show. Be sure to catch them on Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. when they attempt to set a new world record for the most targets hit with a bullwhip while swallowing a sword! Also new this year is Cowboy Mounted Shooting, the nation’s fastest growing equestrian sport! The Old West Festival runs Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 10 - Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Festival is located at 1449 Greenbush Cobb Rd between Mt. Orab and Williamsburg, Ohio just off St. Rt. 32. Cost is $10 general admission; $6 for children

ages 6 to 12; and children under 5 are free. Parking is FREE. Please visit www.oldwestfestival.com or call 1-866-WEST-FES (1866-937-8337). Also, visit us on Twitter and Facebook. Visit

Blueberries as landscape shurbs ‘Someone Else’s Twin’ tells the stories of babies switched at birth

B R O A D S H E E T

Blueberry bushes are attractive shrubs with abundant pink-tinged white blooms in spring, shiny foliage and stunning fall color. If you have a welldrained full-sun location for foundation shrubs or privacy hedge, consider using blueberry plants. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There’s even a “groundcover” blueberry ideal for sunny hillsides! As an added bonus, you can enjoy loads of luscious fruit. Like any orchard plant, blueberry bushes need some care and present challenges, particularly keeping wild creatures from getting all that juicy fruit before you do. The most important step is welldrained soil, best accomplished in raised beds. The reward is an attractive landscape plant that also provides a plentiful food supply. There are hundreds of blueberry varieties available. Here are our favorites at GoodSeed Farm: Bluecrop: Hardier and more drought resistant than most blueberries, Bluecrop grows into a dense, multiplebranched upright bush 4-6 feet tall. It produces medium to large, light-blue fruit of good quality, the fruit is firm, resistant to cracking and has a good flavor. Brigitta: Large, firm, light blue fruit has a crisp texture and a well-balanced sweet yet very tangy flavor. One of the highest-quality berries available with an amazing shelf life - can be stored up to one month! Bronze new leaves become deep green when mature, and burgundy in fall. A slightly spreading bush 5 to 6 ft. high and wide. Jersey: Bakers love the medium-size, sweet-tasting fruit produced by Jersey. Its rich blue berries are a perfect choice for tarts, muffins and coffeecakes. One of the most widely grown varieties, this bush is very vigorous and productive. It has an upright and open growth habit 6-8' tall in a wide range of soil types, always producing heavy, reliable crops. It

ripens in August and is a very reliable producer every year. Northblue: This prolific bloomer produces attractive showy white flowers tinged pink, followed by a huge midseason crop of blueberries. Fall foliage colors range yellow through red. A moderate grower 2 to 3 ft. tall and just over 3 ft. wide, its smaller size makes a fine landscape plant for borders, as hedge or specimen. Patriot: A "half-high" blueberry variety, (a hardy cross between highbush and lowbush-type blueberries), Patriot is a very productive blueberry that can produce 10-20 pounds of fruit per plant. The berries are large and firm, have a rich flavor and ripen in July. Patriot is adaptable to many soil types, shows good resistance to root rot, and can withstand wet soils better than other varieties. A mature plant grows 5-feet tall and wide, with a spreading rather than upright form. Ruby Carpet: This lowbush blueberry variety creates a ruby red and blazing orange carpet in autumn, and bears tasty small fruit that is perfect for baking. Plants grow just 1-1/2 ft high. For the best effect, space plants 3 ft. apart, and they will spread up to 12 inches a year. Why settle for the ordinary groundcovers when you can be a trend setter by planting these beautiful native blueberries?

Spartan: Exceptionally attractive and tasty fruit is often larger than a quarter in size with a tangy sweet flavor. Large, glossy-green foliage becomes orange and yellow in fall. Small white, bell-shaped late spring flowers proceed the berries in mid-July. Moderate growing upright shrub 5 to 6 ft. tall, 4 to 5 ft. wide. Here’s a radical approach to successfully growing blueberries: Rather than digging holes and planting them, set the plants on top of the ground and build a foot-deep raised bed around them. Then fill the bed completely with shredded Pine bark mulch and keep the mulch moist until the root systems grow out into the mulch. Pine bark has just the right acidity so it makes the perfect soil for them. Renewing the pine mulch every spring prevents weeds, making your bed maintenance free. Espoma “Holly Tone” fertilizer is the perfect blueberry food, providing additional acid and trace minerals vital to healthy blossoms and fruit. There were times when your parents seriously wondered… When you were a baby, and cried for hours no matter what they did to sooth you, when you seemed to have a death-wish on the playground, when the only words out of your mouth were poison, they thought – hard. Could it be? Was there a mistake? Were you really their child or were you switched at birth? Okay, laugh now – but what if you were? What if you’d been raised believing a lie? In the new book “Someone Else’s Twin,” by Nancy L. Segal, you’ll read the unbelievable stories of babies who grew up, mixed up. As a twin researcher, Dr. Nancy Segal has an edge: she and her sister, Ann, are fraternal twins. And yet, says Segal, “Every once in a while a researcher discovers a… situation that is irresistible, something so compelling that she drops everything to study it.” For Segal, that case came about in 2008. More than 30 years before, three baby girls were born in the same Canary Islands hospital to two different mothers. Delia and Begoña were twins. Beatriz was a “singleton” but sometime before the babies went home, Beatriz and Delia were accidentally switched. Though both women remembered feeling “different” while growing up and, while they noticed familial dissimilarities, nobody suspected what had happened that January of 1973. But when they were brought together by a mutual acquain-

tance in the summer of 2008, Delia and Begoña were stunned to see mirror images of themselves. Beatriz was stunned to learn that she was not a twin after all. And it was no anomaly: Segal cites several cases, including one in which two boys (one twin) were switched. At age seven, both were returned to their proper families. Yes, this sounds like something yanked from fiction, but accidental baby-switching happens with alarming frequency: some 20,000 babies in the U.S. are reported to have been unintentionally switched each year, although Segal says that the vast majority of mistakes are corrected before the babies go home. Or, at least, that’s the hope… Nature or nurture? Are gestures, preferences, and personalities in our DNA? How did the mothers not know? If you’re a parent, you’re not concerned with any of that right now. Instead, admit it – you’re mentally scanning your own offspring.

And “Someone Else’s Twin” seems to be likewise perplexing. Scholarly and somewhat repetitious, this book offers readers more about the Canary Islands case than they perhaps would ever want to know. Ever. And yet, author Nancy L. Segal’s excitement about her subjects is infectious and the information she’s gained in her years of twin research help move this book along nicely. Segal also includes a little outrage and some helpful ideas for parents and health-care workers to lessen the chances of error. Overall, if you’re interested in twindom and are willing to look past the tedium, give this book a try. If you’re looking for something more on the lighter side, though, put “Someone Else’s Twin” aside and switch to something else. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3years-old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.
