Duke repairs damaged towers and power lines Helicopter used to string lines across Ohio River BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

The tornado that ripped through Moscow March 2 not only destroyed dozens of homes and businesses in the area, but also downed power lines and damaged several Duke Energy transmission towers. Officials with Duke Energy, as well as several contractors, worked to reinstall power lines from Moscow across the river to Northern Kentucky May 18, a dangerous task that involved trained climbers and a helicopter pilot. “This is extremely rare,” Sally Thelen, spokesperson for Duke Energy, said. “It's not something you see in our industry very often, like decades, where it involves going over a water mass.” Thelen said the process involved first running rope

lines from William H. Zimmer Power Station in Moscow across the Ohio River and connecting the line to several transmission towers that had to be repaired or rebuilt because of the tornado. She said once all the rope lines are installed, conductors can be pulled through the rope and then the lines can be energized. Bret Wheatlake, of The Hydaker-Wheatlake Company, was the project manager for the line installation. “Getting everyone together took a lot of planning,” Wheatlake said. “We always want to have experienced people.” Wheatlake said the project required trained climbers to help connect the rope at the top of the transmission towers and a trained helicopter pilot who is responsible for stringing the rope from tower to tower and across the Ohio River. He said there was also a team of about 25 people communicating and assisting on the ground. “Anytime you get into something where you're

pulling ropes or anything that could get caught around the blades (of the helicopter), it is dangerous,” Wheatlake said.

Wheatlake said the Coast Guard was also involved because the Ohio River had to be shut down in the area. “We are installing the

ropes before we install the conductors,” Wheatlake said before they began. He said the helicopter pilot would pull the rope to

the first 306 foot tall tower and would then pull the rope 2,800 feet across the Duke, Page 3

Batavia schools select teachers of the year Durbin, Kelly, and Zearbaugh recognized BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Batavia Local School District Board of Education members honored the 2012 teachers of the year during their May 21 board meeting. Each school selected a teacher of the year, and one of the teachers received district-wide honors. Michael Enriquez, board president, quoted William Ward who said: The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. “You all inspire,” Enriquez said. Karen Durbin, a language

arts teacher, received teacher of the year honors for Batavia High School. Jamie Corrill, principal of Batavia High School, said Durbin has been at the high school for 15 years and has evolved as a teacher in the district. “I have been fortunate to work with her,” Corrill, said. “She is a top notch teacher.” Durbin said it was humbling to be honored as teacher of the year. “I feel like so many of my colleagues are deserving,” Durbin said. “It is flattering.” Lisa Zearbaugh, an intervention specialist, received the teacher of the year honor for Batavia Middle

School. “She is able to chip away at the hard exterior and get to the core,” TJ Glassmeyer, assistant principal at Batavia Middle School, said. “She finds out what motivates students and helps them become successful.” Glassmeyer shared a story Zearbaugh shared with him about helping a student learn to read. Glassmeyer said Zearbaugh realized the student, Jade, was a Michael Jackson fan so she collected magazines about the famous singer to help motivate Jade to read. Zearbaugh said receiving the teacher of the year award is a true honor. “There are so many great teachers in Batavia,” Zearbaugh said. “I was just Teachers, Page 3

Sgt. Donald Lawrence III of the Ohio Army National Guard was honored by Clermont County Commissioners May 16 before his second deployment. Lawrence, a Glen Este High School graduate, joined the national guard when he was 17 years old and has already served the country in Iraq. “It’s what I always wanted to do,” Lawrence said about joining the National Guard. “Just like anything in life you have to take the good with the bad, but I’m definitely glad I did it.” Lawrence left for his first

deployment to Iraq in August of 2009 and was responsible for personal security, convoy security and training Iraqi police officers while he was there. He returned after being in the country for 11 months, and said there is no way to describe what it feels like coming home. “The day you come home is way more than worth it when you are gone for a long time,” Lawrence said. Lawrence said he returned home to his daughter Hailie, who was 1 year old when he left. “It’s crazy when you leave she barely says words and the next thing you know she’s speaking full sentences,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence said while he was home he completed additional training similar to swat school. He said this time, he will be deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom. He said he volunteered for the deployment and positive where he will be located yet. Lawrence said he will be leaving for three weeks of training in Ohio this Memorial Day weekend and will leave out of Camp Shelby, Mississippi after that. He said the deployment should be nine months in country. Lawrence was honored for his service and received many well wishes during Clermont County Commissioners’ May 16 session. Commissioners thanked Lawrence for his bravery

Kelly said she was surprised and was at a loss for words about receiving the district-wide teacher of the year recognition. She said she enjoys teaching kindergarten every day and almost didn't believe it when Mrs. Munro told her about the award. “I feel very honored,” Kelly said. “I was very surprised.”

Thelen said repairing and rebuilding towers and reinstalling the power lines near Zimmer Station was just part of the repairs the company is continuing to make after the storms ripped

through the Greater Cincinnati area March 2. “We are still not totally rebuilt,” Thelen said. She said they are hopeful the insurance plan will help cover the cost of some repairs at Zimmer Station, and they may be able to utilize money from their storm fund to repair some of the other towers.

Gen X’ers must juggle financial issues If you’re part of “Generation X” — the age cohort born between the mid1960s and the early 1980s — you’re probably in one of the busiest phases of your life, as you’re well into your working years and, at the same time, busy raising a family. But just as you’re “multi-tasking” in your life, you’ll also need to address multiple financial goals. In seeking to accomplish your key objectives, you may be asking yourself a variety of questions, including the following: • Should I contribute as much as possible to my IRA and 401(k)? In a word, yes. Your earnings on a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and a 401(k) grow on a tax-deferred basis, so your money can accumulate faster than it would if placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Plus, since you typically make 401(k) contributions with pretax dollars, the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. And your traditional IRA contributions may be taxdeductible, depending on your income. If you meet income guidelines, you can contribute to a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you meet certain conditions. • Should I put away money for my kids’ college education? It’s not easy to fund your retirement accounts plus save money for your children’s college education. Still, college is expensive, so if you feel strongly about helping to pay for the high costs of higher education, you may want to explore college funding vehicles, such as a 529 plan, which offers tax advantages. • Should I pay down my mortgage or invest those funds? Most of us dream of freeing ourselves from a mortgage someday. So, as your career advances and your income rises, you may wonder if you should make bigger mortgage payments. On one hand, there’s no denying the psychological benefits you’d receive from paying off your mortgage. However, you may want to consider putting any extra money into your investment portfolio to help as you work toward your retirement goals. Work with your financial advisor to determine what may be most appropriate for your portfolio. • Do I have enough insurance in place to protect my family? You may hear that you need seven or eight times your annual income in life insurance, but there’s really no “right” figure for everyone. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine how much life insurance is appropriate for your needs. • Am I familiar with my parents’ financial situation and estate considerations? Now is the time to communicate with your parents about a variety of issues related to their financial situation and estate plans. The more you know, the better positioned you’ll be to provide assistance and support if and when it’s needed. Just to name one example, you should inquire of your parents if they’ve designated a durable power of attorney to make financial decisions for them in case they’re ever incapacitated. By answering these questions, you can get a handle on all the financial issues you face at your stage of life. It may seem challenging, but taking the time now can help you better position yourself to reach your financial goals. Article submitted by S. May is Older Americans Month Thank You to our senior citizens

May is a special time when we honor older Americans and the many contributions they have made to our country. Todayʼs older Americans have lived through wars and the Great Depression, as well as times of unprecedented prosperity. They pioneered advances in medicine, communications, and industry

all the while leading a cultural revolution that won equal rights for minorities, women, and disabled Americans. These achievements demonstrate the strength and character of older Americans and highlight the debt of gratitude we owe to those who have given us so much. Have you thanked an Older American today?

Do Something Special For An Older American You Know!

Senior citizens enrich our community

Lois Brown Dale founded Clermont Senior Services when she was in her fifties, then served in that capacity for over 20 years.

Older Americans Month is a designation to recognize a special group of people. It is a chance to show our appreciation and support seniors as they continue to enrich and strengthen our communities. Their shared histories, diverse

experiences, and wealth of knowledge have made our culture, economy, and local character what they are today. In fact, older Americans are more active in community life than ever before, thanks in part to advances in healthcare, education, technology, and financial stability over the last several decades that have greatly increased their vitality and standard of living. Older adults are out and about giving back and making a difference in their community. Older adults also serve as advocates and volunteers in our communities. They provide a reservoir of knowledge and experience. Theyʼre involved in the lives of their grandchildren, their churches and other

community organizations. And they possess a high degree of political savvy. Older Americans step up to help one another as well. In fact, many of daytime volunteers at Clermont Senior Services are senior citizens. They deliver meals-onwheels, grocery shop, visit, make minor home repairs, build wheelchair ramps, work in the office and serve on our board of trustees. Their efforts remind us that when older adults are active and engaged in their communities, everyone benefits. Many seniors remain active in the workforce to help sup-

port themselves and their families. Some are raising their grandchildren. They readily learn new technology as well. They email and text their families, book travel arrangements on the Internet, download music, shop online, and Photoshop their digital photographs. Healthy, active seniors are the happiest. They are lifelong learners, and lifelong givers of themselves. We are blessed by the lives of the senior citizens in our communities. They exemplify grace, generosity, and responsibility, and they make our community a better place to live.

Every day, you try to get a little exercise. Specifically, you try to take a good walk of fiveto-seven miles, weather permitting. It kinda makes you feel like a kid again: you get some fresh air, maybe take in a few rays, chase a ball and sometimes, you play in the sand, darn it. Still, as they say, a bad day of golf is better than a good day at work. But what if golf was your work? In “The Big Three and Me” by Billy Casper (with James Parkinson and Lee Benson), you’ll read about the second man in history to make a million bucks by playing in the grass. The first golf club Billy Casper ever used was a 5-

iron. He remembers because it was the club his father used. Billy was four years old then, and they were playing on a homemade course in a pasture near Silver City , New Mexico . Casper ‘s earliest life was idyllic: an only child, he spent countless hours with the animals on his grandfather’s farm. When he was six, his parents began a somewhat nomadic life and they divorced when he was barely a teen. He eventually ended up living with his

mother in Chula Vista , California . There, he found “family” and a calling. Casper hung out at the San Diego Country Club and golfed as much as possible. He played in the dark, to see how well he’d shoot (a trick he learned from Ben Hogan), and was a caddy when a club member paid for golf lessons. Casper began entering tournaments. After a half-semester at Notre Dame, marriage, and a stint in the Navy (where he was assigned to a golf course for most of his enlistment), Casper decided to “leave [his] days as an amateur golfer behind forever.” He was a father by then, and needed to feed his family, so he and his

If you live for the links, then “The Big Three and Me” is what you want. While golfers will revel in the stats and familiar names that author Billy Casper shares, the real fun of this book is in the stories he chips at his readers. Casper remembers a time when PGA players arranged their own transportation, when $25 was a good-enough purse, and caddies were sometimes forbidden. Those tales are perfect for old duffers, and will put a lot into perspective for new fans. If you’re someone who likes to putter around on a big lawn or chase little white balls, then grab “The Big Three and Me”… because missing it will just make you tee’d off. “The Big Three and Me” by Billy Casper, with James Parkinson and Lee Benson, foreword by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player; c.2012, Genesis Press $27.00 U.S. and Canada; 315 pages

Wildey students express themselves through art Teenagers and art mix well together, especially when they are celebrating a worthy cause. That was the overall consensus at the Thomas A. Wildey School on May 9, as students and volunteers participated in the “My Feelings Are a Work of Art” project. To recognize May as Mental Health Month, Clermont FAST TRAC created the “My Feelings” project for children to express their emotions and to help them realize many people care about their mental health. The Clermont County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCDD), Wildey School students, and eighth grade volunteers from the St. Louis School joined together on May 9 to participate in this project to show everyone is important, regardless of their abilities, emotions, or moods. “Classrooms were given small, cardboard cutouts of people,” explained Lisa Davis, CCDD Community Relations Director. “They decorated the cutouts with art supplies, according to the students’ feelings and expressions.” St. Louis eighth grade volunteers were paired up with Wildey students, working one-on-one with each other to create a project that came to life throughout the afternoon. Teachers and staff assisted by using pictorial diagrams to help the students choose the emotional de-

Regular readers of this column already know that “the best weed control is complete darkness”. In other words, weeds can only grow if the sun is hitting the ground. That’s why we use mulch, and that’s why we have more weed problems in sunny areas than in the shade. Using groundcover plants is a great way to reduce weeding and mulching, and cover steep banks with a carpet of foliage. Groundcovers look terrific, help control erosion, and don’t need mowing every week. Many are evergreen, most have nice flowers, and they are all easy to grow. Groundcovers form a “carpet” of lowgrowing clumps or vines that enhance your landscape and look very professional. When installing new beds, we like to add groundcover plants in all the open spaces. It takes about three years for the plants to completely cover, and once this happens you don’t need to mulch any more so the installation pays for itself! Groundcover plants are available in flats of two-tothree inch pots, which can be spaced a foot apart for coverage in about three years. We’ve had much quicker coverage by starting with larger plants, spaced further apart. The key to success is digging a nice big hole for each plant, mixing fertilizer and peat in the planting hole, and mulching generously to keep weeds out until the groundcover spreads. Larger plants with a gallon or more of roots will get established much faster, forming a healthy pillow of new foliage. You can space larger plants as far as three feet apart. Which groundcover works best depends on the conditions in your landscape. Pick groundcovers carefully for best results. Here are some of our favorites: Pachysandra (Japanese spurge) is great in shady areas. It has glossy green foliage and little spikes of white flowers. Pachysandra spreads in the mulch and leaf litter, so you never have to rake leaves or twigs out of an established patch. It is shallow-rooted so it doesn’t compete with your perennials, shrubs or bulbs. Vinca minor (also called Myrtle or Periwinkle) is great in full sun and on slopes, and also does well in shade. Once established it is very tough and trouble-free. It has delightful blue-purple flowers and dark glossy green leaves. Liriope (lilyturf or monkey grass) makes a carpet of strappy dark green leaves with showy purple

STEVE BOEHME flower spikes. It makes a great border along bed edges and a filler in open areas, in full or part sun. Variegated versions with white or yellow stripes along the leaf edges are also popular. English Ivy is traditionally used as a groundcover, and is a great way to cover large areas and “civilize” under trees where nothing else will grow. Ivy will climb trees and buildings and creep across paving. So make sure this is O.K. with you before planting it. Euonymus coloratus (wintercreeper) is another climbing plant that makes an attractive groundcover. It turns bright red in fall and drops its leaves for the winter. We like planting it next to bare brick walls, where it climbs aggressively and makes a very lush background for specimen trees and shrubs. Sedums (stonecrop) and delosperma (ice plant) of various kinds make great groundcovers in sunny dry areas, thriving with very little water or maintenance. Some of them are bright yellow-green, others are variegated, most have very showy blooms. They look great on slopes and in rock gardens. There are many other

groundcovers like creeping thyme, deadnettle, veronica and creeping phlox. All have their uses, and in the right situation will help reduce maintenance while providing a colorful show. Get suggestions from your nursery about which ones would work best in your situation, and how to plant them successfully.
