Schoumacher returns from serving in Iraq Guardsman surprises his family at Eastgate Mall Sun staff
Sergeant Chris Schoumacher of the United States Army National Guard received an early Christmas present Dec. 6 when he was able to fly back to the United States from Iraq to reunite with his family. “I am glad to be home before Christmas,” Schoumacher said. “I got to surprise the kids at the mall.” Schoumacher said he told his wife, Kristin, so she could pick him up, but he kept his return a secret from his three children Carter, 6, Bray, 3, and Kabrey, 1. Schoumacher said Kristin planned to take the children to sit on Santa’s lap that day, and one of them even brought a picture of dad hoping Santa would bring him home for Christmas. Once the children were gathering around Santa, Schoumacher came out of a nearby store to surprise them. The encounter was even recorded and posted on YouTube. “I was just surprised and happy,” Carter said about seeing his father. “You should
watch the video.” Schoumacher said a lot has changed since he left for Iraq four months ago as part of Operation New Dawn. He said his 3-year-old has grown up, Carter seems older and Kabrey can walk now. His wife Kristin is also glad to have him home. “It’s like when he is gone a part of you is gone,” she said about running things at home without him. Schoumacher was able to leave Iraq early because of the pullout. He said a lot of his time there was spent closing bases down in the country. “Closing Iraq down was not fun, a lot of unpacking,” he said. “In the end, there wasn’t much there for us.” This was Schoumacher’s second tour to Iraq and he said this time it was a lot better that his first tour. “My mission in 2006 and 2007 was pretty bad,” he said. “But nothing happened to me then and nothing happened to me this time.” He also said he had more support from home this time around. “We didn’t know about everything before,” Schoumacher said about the

Pizzeria opens in New Richmond Seat on board of

Family tradition of pizza making continues with new restaurant
Batavia trustees to fill vacancy

Pizza making has been in Teresa Davis’ family for decades. And with the help of family, friends and a generous landlord, Davis has taken a dive into the restaurant business in New Richmond. The decision to open her own pizzeria came as the result of a letter addressed to Donatos Pizza, the pizza company she was working for. The letter was from New Richmond council member Nick Wolf, who was looking to fill his vacant building on Walnut Street with another pizza restaurant. Angelo’s was previously at the location owned by Wolf and he sent letters to other local pizza restaurants to see if

anyone would be interested in opening a pizzeria at his location. Davis said she read the let-
ter and became interested. Not just because she had 10 years of experience at Donatos, but also because making pizza

from scratch was something natural for her family.
After the death of trusteeelect Jim Bushman, Batavia Township Trustees have had to make quick decisions about filling his seat on the board come January. And while the topic of replacing Bushman isn’t an easy one, as he was killed as a result of a car accident Nov. 21, much of the procedure is outlined in the Ohio Revised Code for what to do in the situation of a vacancy. According to the Ohio Revised Code, the two remaining trustees should appoint a person to fill the vacancy within 30 days of the date the vacancy occurred. The appointed trustee will
fill an unexpired term, which runs until Dec. 31, 2013. Trustees James Sauls Jr., and Bill Dowdney are accepting letters of interest from Batavia residents, 18years-old, or older, who are registered voters. Anyone interested can submit a letter to the Batavia Township Trustees at 1535 Clough Pike, Batavia, Ohio 45103. The letter should list qualifications and reasons for interest in the position. The letter should be addressed to the attention of Jennifer Haley, fiscal officer, and must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, Jan. 17. The board of trustees will review the letters and make an appointment at a special meeting that will be scheduled before February. For more information call (513) 732-3888.

THE BOOKWORM SEZ
They were married on the kitchen floor. You remember it well, since you were the one who picked them up at day’s end. The fashion-conscious bride wore something Grandma sewed, and toilet tissue as a veil. Her beloved, a blue pony with long mane and tail, wore an ill-fitting tuxedo borrowed from another doll that your daughter also loved, but that was not invited to the wedding on the kitchen floor. It seems like yesterday since she was playing wedding, and now she’s getting married herself. These days, it’s all about the dress – but as you’ll see in the new book “The Magic Room” by Jeffrey Zaslow, that’s only part of the love story. Fowler, Michigan, is your typical small town. There’s a sandwich shop there, and a small café. The local mechanic is helpful if your keys get locked in your car. Main Street has seen its share of business closings, openings, and closings again. But one store has stood in Fowler for more than seven decades; in fact, you might say that Becker’s Bridal is Fowler’s claim to fame. When she was a very small child, Shelley Becker Mueller used to go with her mother to Becker’s Bridal to hang out. Shelley remembers hiding behind the voluminous dresses, eavesdropping on brides-to-be, waiting for her mother to call her, or listening for her grandmother – who started the store – to order decisions. Today, and not without a minor familial struggle, Shelley is the owner of the store and her own daughter works at Becker’s Bridal. But the four-generation thing isn’t what makes brides drive from all over to find a white dress. What makes them come is tradition – and the Magic Room. Formerly a bank vault, the

room sports teal carpet, goldwhite walls, a pedestal, and mirrors that stretch to “infinity.” There, women can see themselves from all angles and sparkles, better able to recognize The Dress. Mothers always cry in the Magic Room. It’s where women become brides and dreams are made… Like any good wedding, “The Magic Room” includes a bride. Several, in fact, and author Jeffrey Zaslow followed them from the moment they first stepped into Becker’s Bridal. There’s the one who saved her first kiss for her future husband; the one with a missing mom; a life-changing car accident just months before the ceremony; the widowed bride with angry children; and the 40-year-old who wondered if she’d ever get married. Like every good wedding, there are mothers fussing,

helping, hoping. And like every good wedding, you’ll find love and tears here; choked-up fathers, seven-story cakes, and the kind of silliness that makes good memories. There are mini-disasters and big emergencies, doubts and divas and yes, divorce. Overall, though, there’s Happily Ever After in this book, and I was completely captivated by it. I think you will be, too – especially if you were ever a little girl who loved fairy-tale weddings, or the mom who loved that little girl. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL!
Georgetown Florist
Xylitol, while beneficial for humans, is dangerous, even lethal, for dogs Sugar substitutes are big business. Less sugar can mean weight loss, improved health, diabetic control, and even reduced tooth decay. The quest for products that can sweeten and cook like sugar is ongoing. Xylitol is common sugar substitute, especially when it comes to sugarless gum. Not only does xylitol offer sweetness without calories, it also has antibacterial properties in the mouth so as to reduce periodontal disease and has been found to have far reaching health benefits in other areas of the body. Xylitol may help with osteoporosis, prevention of ear and throat infections, and may reduce risk of endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and even breast cancer. Sounds wonderful and maybe it is – if you are a human. If you are a dog, xylitol is potentially lethal. In the canine body, the pancreas confuses xylitol with real sugar and releases insulin to store the “sugar.” The problem is that xylitol does not offer the extra Calories of sugar and the rush of insulin only serves to remove the real sugar from the circulation. Blood sugar levels plummet resulting in weakness, disorientation, tremors, and potentially seizures. It does not take many sticks of gum to poison a dog, especially a small dog (see below for toxic doses). Symptoms typically begin within 30 minutes and can last for more than 12 hours.
DR. DAN MEAKIN ALL CREATURES ANIMAL HOSPITAL
Vomiting and diarrhea may also occur. The other reaction associated with xylitol in the canine body is actual destruction of liver tissue. How this happens remains unknown but the doses of xylitol required to produce this effect are much higher than the hypoglycemic doses described above. Signs take longer to show up (typically 8-12 hours) and surprisingly not all dogs that experience hepatic necrosis, will have experienced hypoglycemia first. A lucky dog experiences only temporary illness but alternatively, a complete and acute liver failure can result with death following. Internal hemorrhage and inability of blood to clot is commonly involved. The hypoglycemic dose of xylitol for dogs is considered to be approximately 0.1 grams per kilogram of body weight (about 0.45 gram per pound). A typical stick of gum contains 0.3 to 0.4 grams of xylitol, which means that a 10 lb dog could be poisoned by as little as a stick and a half of gum. The dose to cause hepatic necrosis is 1 gram per kilogram of body weight, about ten times more than the above dose. In the example above, the 10 lb dog would have to find an unopened
package of gum and eat it for liver destruction to occur. Ideally, the patient can be seen quickly (within 30 minutes) and can be made to vomit the gum or candy. Beyond this, a sugar IV drip is prudent for a good 24 hours. Liver enzyme and blood clotting tests are monitored for 2 to 3 days. Blood levels of potassium are ideally monitored as well. Elevated blood phosphorus levels often bode poorly. So far National Animal Poison Control has no reports of xylitol toxicity in cats. At this time, feline toxicity is unknown. The oral health benefits of xylitol do seem to hold true for dogs if appropriately low doses of xylitol are used. A product called Aquadent® has been marketed for canine oral care, specifically for dogs that do not tolerate other methods of dental home care. This product is mixed in drinking water to provide antibacterial benefits. It comes in a 500cc (half liter) bottle that contains a total of 2.5 grams of xylitol as well as in small packets. If one follows the dosing instructions on the bottle or packet, there should be no problems. Trouble could occur if there are animals of different sizes drinking from the same water bowl (one should dose for the smallest animal to use the bowl to be sure overdose is not possible). A dog finding the bottle and chewing it up, drinking a substantial quantity of the undiluted

As an investor, you know that 2011 was a somewhat “choppy” year, with the financial markets going through many ups and downs. So what can you expect in 2012? As baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra is quoted as saying: “It’s hard to make predictions — especially about the future.” And these words are certainly applicable for anyone who would like an accurate forecast of the investment climate. Yet we do know of some factors that may affect your portfolio in the months ahead. Here are a few of
them: • Strong business fundamentals — This past year, all the noise about the debt ceiling debate, the size of the U.S. deficit and the European financial situation tended to drown out some fairly good news: U.S. businesses’ balance sheets were strong for the most part, borrowing costs remained low, and corporate profits were good — and corporate profitability remains a key driver of stock prices. Heading into 2012, these fundamentals continue to look positive, which may bode well for investors. • Europe’s debt crisis —
&
Greece’s economic problems made a lot of news in 2011, but they weren’t the end of the story in Europe, as major financial difficulties also face Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. It’s by no means clear how these problems will be resolved, so don’t be surprised to see them lead to intermittent, if short-lived, shocks to the markets. • Election-year patterns — As you’re well aware, we’re voting for president in 2012. But you might be surprised to learn that the S&P 500 index has shown negative returns in only three of the last 21 presidential election years. Coincidence? No one can say for sure — and at this point, no one can say if this pattern of positive returns will continue during this election year. Still, it’s an interesting phenomenonSo there you have it: the good, the bad and the quirky. Take them all together, and you still may not be able to foresee what will happen with the markets this year, but you’ll have a lot to think about. But instead of trying to predict what will happen in 2012, you may be better off following these triedand-true investment strategies: • Diversify your holdings. By spreading your money among a wide range of investments, you
can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss. • Don’t ignore your risk tolerance. If you worry excessively about market fluctuations, you may have too much risk in your portfolio, which means you may need to make some changes. • Always look at the “big picture.” Financial markets will always fluctuate. But if you can keep your focus on your long-term objectives, and make decisions accordingly, you can avoid overreacting to shortterm events. Like other years, 2012 will bring with it periods of both turbulence and smooth sailing. But by making the right investment moves, you can still chart a course that can allow you to move ever closer to your future goals.

Pizza: Family tradition continues Continued from page 1 “I told him I had not a dime to my name, but in my heart I wanted to do it,” Davis said about opening her own restaurant. Another factor influencing her decision was the organization Faith Chapel Ministries, of which she is a part. Davis said she wanted to open a pizza restaurant to help support abandoned women, children and foster children and provide a place for some of them to work. “I feel in my heart that we are going to fund it in a major way,” Davis said. So, with the help of her husband Tom and parents Walt and Kathleen Potter, Davis decided to quit her job at Donatos and open a restaurant using many of the recipes her parents used at their restaurant, Doe-Boys Pizza, from 1981-1991. “My recipe originated in
1952,” Walt Potter said. “We use all natural ingredients on our pizza, everything is real.” Potter said his 55 years of experience making pizza, including the crust and sauce, from scratch, is what makes Doe-Boys pizza different from the rest. He has passed down these skills to Teresa and Tom, and Teresa's Doe-Boy's Pizzeria opened Oct. 12. Since then the family has been working to perfect the recipes to make them taste like the original every time. Their pizzeria offers a variety of products, most with football-related names because it is the Davis' favorite sport. They have pizza pies ranging from barbecue chicken to veggie and also have hoagies, wings, salads and sides. “It's awesome,” Davis said about being able to open the business. “The transition has been difficult but I'm getting
there.” Davis said she has been working to build relationships in the community and is looking to provide pizza for school lunches and more. In addition, she is working to determine exactly how she will contribute to Faith Chapel Ministries once the business grows. She said she hopes the business can contribute financially to the ministry and also wants to individually help the women and foster children who have aged out of the system. “My vision is, once they are reformed, they need to work,” she said. “One of the reasons I opened is to offer that place of work.” Teresa's Doe-Boy's Pizzeria is located at 412 Walnut Street in New Richmond and they offer pick-up, delivery and dine-in services.
