New Richmond was a hub for artists Jan. 28-29 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., as the annual Destination Artists event stretched from the village of New Richmond to Moscow showcasing dozens of talented artists. “It has been satisfying,” Sylvia Holland, with Laurel Barn Quilts, said about the show. “It seems like there has been a lot of traffic for the art show this weekend, which is great.” It was Holland's first time being a part of Destination Artists and she was located on Front Street in New Richmond. Sylvia and her husband John recently began creating quilt barn paintings and Destination Artists was their first public showing. “The response from the public was so great,” Holland said. “I think that it is satisfying seeing what we are capable of doing.” Also on Front Street, Nancy Swats, displaying Gourds by Nancy, was located at Trendy's. Swats was selling a variety of gourd designs and other crafts during the event. “What I like is getting comments from people,” Swats said about Destination Artists. “I like talking with people and usually every year I do very well.”

Swats makes a variety of products out of gourds, including bird houses, ornaments and more. She then paints the gourds to look like different characters, sports teams or seasonal decorations. “I got hooked a few years ago,” Swats said about
using gourds. “I saw them when I was down in Gatlinburg.” Also in New Richmond was Mary Mark's Art in the Church, the location of several artists and live music from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. each day. “It was wonderful,”
Robin Lacy, of the Robin Lacy Trio band, said about performing during the event. He also said he thoroughly enjoyed the art gallery and encouraged residents to come check out the event next year. “We're loving it, and we
even won a door prize,” Kathy Reynolds, of Loveland, said about coming to the event. Artists were also located at Anna Ree's Andouille restaurant in Portsmouth and the Artisan Center at See Artists, Page 9
Traci Godbey of Williamsburg will have quite a story to tell her newborn baby, Taylor Lynn Nicole, once she is old enough. The baby girl was born in an ambulance on the side of state Route 32 Jan. 21, with the help of the Williamsburg Fire and EMS. “It happened so quick I just couldn't believe it,” Godbey said about having her daughter. “I started having contractions around 7:30 p.m. and my husband was in the middle of re-arranging the house, I told him 'I think this is coming quicker than I think.'” So the family, including her husband Robert and daughter Tasha, 11, piled in the car and headed for the Williamsburg Fire Department. When they arrived, employees including Mary Marshall, a paramedic, helped Traci get settled into an ambulance so they could take her to the hospital. “We started toward Anderson Hospital and about eight minutes after we got her in the ambulance we had a little baby girl,” Marshall said. “She was born at

Two Union Township men were arrested after starting a fire Jan. 26 at the Goodwill store on Commercial Drive in Union Township. According to a release from Union Township police, the communications center received a fire alarm call at approximately 4:05 a.m. Jan. 26 at the store and emergency crews responded. A small fire was discovered at the scene and was extinguished quickly. “The fire damage was contained to one room,” Union Township Fire Chief Stanley Deimling said. “There was other damage
in the building that was inconsistent with the fire damage, which is why the police got involved.” Investigation suggested that fire was deliberately set, and later that day, Christopher Fairchild, 21, and Thomas Gaffney, 21, were both arrested and charged with arson, breaking and entering, vandalism and attempted safecracking, all felonies. Fairchild was a former employee of Goodwill and Gaffney was an employee at the time. “It's a shame for everybody, it really is,” Michael Flannery, public informaSee Arson, Page 9
STAFF REPORT The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving three motorcycles and a Sardinia concrete truck after a crash that occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. Jan. 31 on US 52. Hensley, the lead motorist, failed to negotiate a curve to the right and drove left of center where he hit the westbound cement truck, operated by Carl Watson, 58, of Seaman, head on. State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers has announced that Ohio’s fire fatalities hit a 25-year low in 2011. The number of fire-related fatalities dropped nearly 18 percent from 2010 to 2011. During the 2011 calendar year, 126 fire-related fatalities were recorded by the Division of State Fire Marshal through reports from Ohio’s fire departments, the State Fire Marshal’s Fire & Explosion Investigation Bureau and the media. The previous low of 130 fire-related fatalities occurred in 2007. There were 153 fire-related fatalities reported in 2010. “Smoke alarms are proven to save lives,” said State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers. “I’m pleased by the efforts of Ohio’s first responders, educators, journalists and citizens in raising awareness of the need for working smoke alarms which undoubtedly played a role in the reduction of fire deaths.” But the Fire Marshal stressed this is a milestone and that fire safety efforts can’t stop with this news. State Fire Marshal Flowers attributes the reduction in fire fatalities to a number of efforts, including fire safety education programs, increased media attention to the need for working smoke alarms in homes, and innovative training for Ohio’s firefighters. An example of the year’s decrease due to increased fire safety awareness can be found in Lawrence County. In 2010, the county suffered eight fire-related fatalities giving it the highest percapita rate in the State of Ohio. The county’s firefighters responded by distributing more than 250 smoke alarms and conducting more than 50 fire safety programs. Lawrence County did not have a single fire-related death in 2011. State Fire Marshal Flowers said he is still concerned the message about working smoke alarms hasn’t reached everyone. More than 90 percent of Ohio’s fire-related fatalities occurred in homes with no confirmed working smoke alarms. The Division of State Fire Marshal recommends working smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside each sleeping area. Smoke alarms should
be tested monthly and alkaline batteries should be replaced twice a year. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years or according to the manufacturer’s specifications. In
addition to smoke alarms, families should have and practice a home fire escape plan with multiple exit routes and should establish a safe meeting place outside the home.

Elligsen
VECTOR SECURITY INC.
Navy Seaman Christopher Elligsen, son of Dagmar M. and Joern Elligsen of Batavia, Ohio, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Elligsen completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly “Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Elligsen is a 2007 graduate of Amelia High School of Amelia, Ohio.

surance. Just consider some of the things that life insurance can do for you and your family: • Pay off your mortgage — With sufficient life insurance, your family can remain in their home should anything happen to you. • Educate your children — College is expensive,
and it seems to get more costly every year. If you were to die prematurely, your life insurance proceeds could help pay for your children’s education. • Help fund retirement — Term insurance consists of just a death benefit. But “permanent” insurance policies, such as whole life or universal life, a tax-ad-

ably. • Help protect your business — If you’re involved in a family-owned business enterprise, you can structure a life insurance policy to help preserve the business or transfer it to the next generation. • Pay for estate taxes — If your estate is sizable, it could generate estate taxes. Life insurance proceeds can help your heirs pay these taxes. Clearly, life insurance offers a variety of benefits. But how much do you need? And what type do you need? You might hear that your coverage should be worth around seven or eight times your annual salary. But there’s really no one-size-fits-all formula. In determining how much life insurance you require, you should consider your age, your income, the size of your family, the amount of your mortgage, whether your spouse has a retirement account, your financial goals and other factors. Your financial advisor can help you assess these variables to determine the appropriate level of coverage. One final word on life insurance: Don’t wait too

long before purchasing a policy or upgrading your existing one. Your life insurance premium is based, in part, on your age, so the sooner you act, the better. Also, the time to buy life insurance is while you are healthy, because poor health could prevent you from obtaining coverage. As important as it is, life insurance isn’t the only protection you and your loved ones may need. During your working years, you are actually more likely to become temporarily disabled, due to injury or illness, than you are to die. If you weren’t able to work for a while, you could help your family maintain its lifestyle if you had an adequate disability income insurance policy. Your employer might offer you some coverage as a benefit, but it might not be sufficient, either in terms of income or the length of the disability covered. Consequently, you may want to explore an individual disability insurance policy. Article submitted by S. Christian Wilks, an Investment Representative with Edward Jones, Milford.
Wildlife stamp to feature chickadees The fourth annual Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp Contest will feature blackcapped and Carolina chickadees, which are common in Ohio and frequent backyard feeders. The two species look nearly identical, but blackcapped chickadees occupy the northern 1/3 of the state, and Carolina chickadees are found in the southern 2/3 of the state. “We encourage Ohio residents to use their photography skills to showcase our native songbirds,” said James Zehringer, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. “This is a unique opportunity to share the beauty of our black-capped and Carolina chickadees.” Entries will be accepted Aug. 13-31, and the photographer with the winning image will receive $500. The contest is open to Ohioans age 18 years and older, however, budding photographers, age 17 and younger, will be able to compete in the youth division. For complete contest rules, visit www.wildohiostamp.com. Photographers submitted 58 images during last year’s contest. The winning salamander photograph was captured by Nina Harfmann of Pleasant Plain. Her photo of a spotted salamander will appear on the 2012 Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp and be available for purchase on March 1. The inaugural Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp, featuring a Baltimore oriole, went on sale March 1, 2010. Since then the stamp has raised more than $45,000. The collectible stamp and its companion photo contest are part of an innovative program intended to raise awareness and support for wildlife diversity. It is important to note $14 out of every $15 Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp sold is invested in Ohio’s Wildlife Diversity Fund. The fund supports habitat restoration, purchases and conservation easements, wildlife and habitat research projects, creation of wildlife educational materials, as well as efforts to restore and conserve endangered and threatened species. Promotion and sale of the Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp has been a grassroots effort and found early success thanks to the dedication of conservation groups across Ohio. For a limited time only, stamp collectors and conservationists will be able to purchase the 2010 and 2011 stamps. More information can be found at www.wildohio.com.

agers from all of our stores showed up to help clean up and I was taken aback by how upset they all were,” Flannery said. “They really care about the people they serve.” Flannery said they hope to have the store re-opened by the end of the month but it will depend on how soon donations and products can arrive. The store's donation center will still be open during the clean-up process and residents can bring donations to the Goodwill at 4051 Commercial Drive, or any other Goodwill location. The incident remains under investigation by the Union Township Police Department.

Artists: Talent on display Continued from page 1 Maple Creek in Moscow. “It has been fabulous, and the live music was a great contribution to the
whole affair,” Mary Mark, event organizer, who runs her business out of the church, said. “I don't think we could have done any better.”
Continued from page 1 Half Acre Road and SR 32.” Marshall, who delivered Taylor, said they knew Traci was close to having the baby and they pulled the ambulance over when they were sure they weren't going to make it to the hospital. “She handled it very well,” Traci said about Marshall. “I couldn't ask for anyone better to be with me.” Robert was driving separately so he wasn't there for the birth, but found out when he arrived at the hospital. Tasha was in the ambulance with her mother when Taylor was born. “She did remarkable,”
Traci said about how Tasha handled the situation. “Although she did come to me in the hospital and tell me she is going to adopt.” Traci said delivering naturally is not her preferred method, but she said that she recovered well from the delivery. She and Taylor were released from the hospital and are now back home. Traci said Taylor is also doing great. Taylor was Marshall's first delivery since she has been a paramedic. “It was amazing,” Marshall said about the experience. “We see so much death and hurt and agony, it was just the most wonderful experience I have had.”

‘Girl Hunter’ is a book that will snare hunters and eaters alike had seconds of those, followed by dessert that must’ve been made by angels. So where did it all come from? To say “a rest aurant” or “the grocery store” is cheating, especially after you’ve read “Girl Hunter” by Georgia Pellegrini. One day not long ago,

after looking up from the trading floor of a Wall Street firm and wondering how she got there, Georgia Pellegrini suddenly knew that a life in finance was not where she belonged. Determined to “nourish [her] soul again,” she set out to become a chef. Still, there was something mi ssing. She was

“Girl Hunter: Revolutionizing the Way We Eat, One Hunt at a Time” by Georgia Pellegrini; c.2012, Da Capo LifeLong; $24.00 / $28.00 Canada; 248 pages, includes index
presentation was more important than nutrition, and food was being wasted. Then the head chef gave her an “unusual order:” she was told to slaughter five turkeys for the evening’s dinner. The experience opened her eyes to a part of her that she never knew existed, and sent h er on a journey far away from the meat aisle in the grocery store. “Is it possible to eat only the meat that you kill?” she asked. Pellegrini’s first answer came in the Arkansas Delta where she joined silver-haired men at a hunting camp they called the Village. They were out for turkeys then, and after a quick tutorial on guns, Pellegrini bagged two gobblers with one shot. Later, she hunted there for doves, deer, and wild boar. In Texas, she shot a javelina, then had to explain to airport security
why she was toting “frozen animal parts” in her luggage. She hunted for grouse in Montana, and spent an edgy week with a rancher in Wyoming who wasn’t who he said he was. She missed “harvesting” axis deer in Texas, traveled to England for a “social hunt,” to New Orleans for ducks, and to upstate New York to hunt s quirrel. “I… have looked my food in the eye and made a choice…” says Pellegrini. “It was all amazing.” Think life’s best spent gun-toting in wilds, woods, or weeds? Then you’re going to love this thoughtful, meaningful, surprisingly gentle book. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.
