Airport runway extension proposed Sporty’s owner pitches plan for economic developoment Sun staff
Founder and Chairman of Sporty’s Market Hal Shevers says Clermont County needs more high paying blue collar jobs, and he has a plan to bring them here. Shevers has been the fixed base operator for the Clermont County Airport since 1986 and is the founder of the world’s largest supplier of general aviation products. He has suggested the Clermont County Commissioners consider extending the runway at the airport in an effort to draw more business aircraft to the county. “With the folding of CVG that’s going on now this airport is more important than ever,” Shevers said. “If we don’t have a place for these corporate guys to land we won’t see the high paying blue collar jobs in the county like we used to.” The Clermont County Airport runway is currently 3,706 feet long. Shevers said extending the runway to about 4,500 feet would make it a more attractive airport for high ranking business executives. Clermont County Board of Commissioners President Ed Humphrey said a runway extension is not something the Commissioners have discussed recently. “There are a lot of tradeoffs to consider,” Humphrey said. “I would have concerns about the noise and its impact on
the surrounding residents but the economic development aspects Hal has mentioned and the possibility of bringing in larger aircraft is certainly a positive. I’m sure it would improve his business.” Shevers and Sporty’s Senior Vice President Bill Anderson said they would be more than happy to continue the airport as it is. “If they decide not to lengthen it right now we’re happy, and if they decide to lengthen the runway to bring in jobs, we’re happy,” Shevers said. According to the National Business Aviation Association businesses use private aircraft for quick access to their facilities to increase employee productivity, expand markets, secure a competitive advantage, induce operational efficiency, offset company expenses by avoiding the use of commercial airlines and subsequently overnight stays, and to improve risk management. “When you go out in a plane you always make one or two other stops,” Shevers said. “Let’s say a CEO visits a plant manager in Owensville in the morning, meets with a plant manager in Murfreesboro, Tenn. for lunch, and flies to a trade association dinner in L.A., that’s where planes pay off.” Shevers said it is important for CEOs and high ranking managers to have quick and easy access to their employees See Runway, Page 3

Clermont Northeastern is looking to use its 60 acres of woods to bring some needed funds into the district. The CNE Board of Education authorized Superintendent Neil Leist to investigate the process of selling some of the timber on the district campus. “We’re asking Neil to gather information and reach out to see what the pros and cons are,” Board Vice President Patty Spencer said. “Right now I think we don’t have
enough data to make a decision.” Spencer said the Board would not approve a plan that damaged the integrity of the property. Leist said based on his experience from his days on his Pike County family farm the district has many trees that are desirable, however at current market prices walnut and white oak are the only trees he and district treasurer Brian Switzer are recommending the board consider. “There are maybe 50 trees total if it’s appropriate and Brian and I think we should be
able to sell them for six figures,” Leist said. The board asked Leist to develop a plan for harvesting the trees which would include appraisals for the timber. Leist said he would need to discuss the issue with other organizations that also used the woods, such as a Miami University summer research program and the FFA. Board member Danny Ilhardt emphasized the fact that no trees will be cut until the board approves a detailed plan for the harvest. Leist asked the board for its input on separate cost saving measure at the meeting. He asked the board for permission to discontinue providing cell phones for district admin-

istrators when CNE’s current contract expired Jan. 31. Leist said the district has provided cell phones for a number of years and eliminating the phones would save the district $6,000 annually. Board member Mike Freeman said the decision was up to Leist. “It’s not in our policy to pay for them and we don’t mandate that they have them,” Freeman said. “You make the decision and we’ll stand with it.” Board President Jayne Mummert recommended that Leist keep a list of administrator’s personal cell phone numbers if he needed to contact them.
Mother charged after death of 3-year-old STAFF REPORT A woman arrested on an outstanding warrant for theft is facing a much more serious charges of child endangerment. Erin Pappas, 30, of Goshen awoke the morning of Thursday, Jan. 27 to find her 3-year-old daughter not breathing. Brooklyn Upton was pronounced dead after Pappas made a frantic 911 call. Clermont County Prosecutor Don White said Upton appears to have died sometime in the night, likely early Thursday morning. He said Pappas was charged with

The Goshen Post Office is losing its carriers as part of a larger cost saving effort by the United States Postal Service. The post office will continue to operate its post office boxes and customers will be able to purchase stamps, send packages, and use the retail portion of the office as they normally would. But the carriers based out of the Goshen Post Office will now be based out of the Milford Post Office 5.5 miles down state Route 28. “The transition should be seamless to customers,” United States Post Office spokesman David Walton said. “Customers may get their mail just a little later in the day.” Customers who are not able to receive packages at their home will still be able to pick them up at the Goshen Post Office. Walton said the change is one of a number of efforts the postal service is taking to cut costs. “As many people know last year we operated at an $8.5 billion loss,” Walton said. “We’re projected to lose $6 billion this year.” Walton said computerized automated mail sorting has cut back on the number of See Mail, Page 3

Continued from page 1 to boost moral and oversee quality control. “The CEO is the driving force of the company,” Shevers said. “They have to perpetually be there communicating.” Batavia Township administrator Rex Parsons said over the years several companies have located in the township because of quick access to the airport. “I think it’s a bigger asset than we probably realize, but I can’t tell if it is always a deciding factor,” Parsons said. Clermont County Commissioner and Batavia Township resident Archie Wilson said extending the
runway is not something he has personally considered. “I know Lunken gets loaded with jets but our airport has not been a key factor to bringing people here that I know of,” Wilson said. “Hal’s been a good neighbor over the years. It might be something worth looking at.” Mt. Orab Mayor Bruce Lunsford has spent the last 30 years pushing for economic development in his village, and executives he has met with generally fly out of Lunken Field. “We have had the question (of airport access) come up in the past,” Lunsford said. “We tell them to go to Lunken, but of course they have to get through Eastgate first. It definitely wouldn’t hurt to have a

"Processing is so much more automated now that the system will even separate out the deliveries by carrier," Walton said. The move will allow the post office to cut back on supervisors and other overhead costs. All carriers should be operating out of the Milford office by the end of the month. "We're moving the carriers to Milford by the end of March," Walton said. "We began about a week or two ago." Goshen is the only post office in the county that is expected to see any changes.

Pappas is currently being held on $500,000 bond in the Clermont County Jail. She pleaded not guilty to the theft charge on Friday, Jan. 28. Pappas was convicted of theft in Miami Township in 2003, and possession of drug paraphernalia in 2000. Did you know that 80 percent of animals over 5 years of age have some form of dental disease? At All Creatures Animal hospital we utilize the latest techniques and modern equipment to provide the best dental care for your pet. Ten Steps to a Healthy Mouth 1. Physical examination. Every animal we see has an examination of the mouth performed as part of the general physical examination. We can see if there is obvious disease in the mouth. We will grade the severity of the dental disease we can see from 1-4, with one being minor dental problems and 4 being major dental problems. This gives us a rough idea of what we may need to do during a dental procedure. It is difficult to fully exam-

ine the mouth of an awake pet and we can only see the crowns of the teeth, not the roots. We will provide an estimate for the procedures we may need to do. We may find more problems during the dental procedure and in this case we will call you to discuss our findings and give you an exact cost for the procedure. 2. Preoperative bloodwork. Any animal that receives general anesthesia at All Creatures Animal Hospital gets blood tests to make sure the animal is in good health. 3. General anesthesia. Dentistry requires an animal to be under a general anesthetic. The patient is anesthetized and IV catheter and anesthetic monitors are placed. A licensed veterinary technician closely monitors the patient during the dental procedure. 4. Intraoral radiology. We can perform x-rays of the teeth for patients undergoing a dental procedure. The only way to accurately evaluate the whole tooth is to x-ray. The crown is the only portion of the tooth visible-the root of the tooth is embedded in a socket in the jaw bone. In many cases, the crown of the tooth may appear normal, but an x-ray of the tooth may reveal a problem with the root that requires treatment. 5. Scaling. Scaling is the process where the tartar is removed from the teeth. Tartar is produced by bacteria that live on the teeth. Tartar causes inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and this leads to recession of the gums, exposure of the tooth roots and eventually loss of the tooth. We remove the tartar with a combination of an ultrasonic scaler and hand scaling (just like the human dental hygienists). Removal of the tartar on the teeth is vital to improving the health of the mouth and it

also removes the source of the patient’s halitosis (bad breath). 6. Periodontal probing. Once the teeth have been scaled, the veterinarian examines each tooth individually with a periodontal probe. We use the probe to look for pockets. Pockets are caused by the gum losing its attachment to the tooth. Bacteria and tartar can accumulate in the pocket causing the wall of the tooth socket to erode and this leads to loosening of the tooth in the socket and eventually this leads to tooth loss. A small pocket may be cleaned and flushed, but a deep pocket usually requires that the affected tooth is removed. 7. Charting. The combination of radiology and periodontal probing allows us to accurately diagnose any problems with the teeth and formulate a treatment plan. We use a special chart to record our findings and treatments. The dental chart is used to accurately record findings and
treatments. 8. Extractions. If we decide that a tooth cannot be saved, it will be extracted. The first step is to place a local anesthetic block to block the tooth. Even though the patient is under an anesthetic, removing a tooth can cause pain and the local block gives the patient immediate pain relief and the effect lasts for several hours to offer the patient post operative comfort. Once the block has taken effect, we elevate a flap of gum tissue to expose the jaw bone. A high speed drill is used to cut the tooth into sections to allow for easier removal. The tooth is removed using instruments called elevators. Once the tooth is removed, the socket is cleaned. A post extraction x-ray is taken to make sure that all of the roots have been removed. Once we have confirmed that there are no tooth root remnants, we close over the socket using the gum flap. This prevents food material from becoming lodged in the empty socket. The flap is sutured with a fine absorbable suture. A local anesthetic block is being placed prior to removal of the tooth with the exposed roots. The tooth has been removed and a gingival flap is sutured over the socket. 9. Sealant. Once the scaling and treatment are completed, we may apply a sealant to the teeth (ORAVET). This sealant helps to prevent bacteria from adhering to the teeth, so it slows down the accumulation of bacteria and tartar on the teeth. It is applied under anesthesia initially and then a kit is sent home with the owner to apply once weekly. 10. Post operative care. We will give specific post operative instructions. This may include soft food and no toothbrushing for a few days. We will discuss treatment options designed to reduce the accumulation of tartar on the teeth. The treatment options may include a combination of toothbrushing, applying sealants, special dental diets (Hills t/d) and oral rinses. Dr. Dan Meakin is the owner of All Creatures Animal Hospital, 1894 Ohio Pike in Amelia. Call (513) 797-PETS.

The Williamsburg Garden Club was organized on April 28, 1936 and will celebrate its 75th Anniversary this year. One of the special events during the year will be a tour of several gardens in the area on July 16. The club, one of the oldest in the State of Ohio, is affiliated with the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. The 10 ladies who organized the club hoped that by sharing their knowledge and abilities they might improve their skills of growing and arranging flowers. Today the club has 23 members, and meetings are held once each month featuring programs of interest on topics related to gardening. Over the years the club has sponsored many projects to beautify the Williamsburg Community. The club has presented Arbor Day programs and planted trees at the local schools. Trees were planted along Main Street and pots of flowers bloom during the summer on street corners and in boxes along the bridge at the village entrance. The bridge is also decorated for the Christmas holidays. Members and volunteers worked together to plant bulbs and trees along the Route 32/133 approaches to the community. The club has actively participated in numerous flower shows and OAGC Region 4 activities. A Memorial Garden was created and is maintained in the Town Square in honor of deceased members, and each year the
club presents the “Civic Beautification” award to an individual in the community who creates and maintains the most outstanding flower and landscape display. In May the club holds an auction of plants donated by members from their gardens and from area nurseries. In the fall, a four weekend mum sale is conducted, and in December, the club participates in the Williamsburg Christmas Walk with a sale of arrangements and wreaths. All of the proceeds from these events are used for the beautification of the Williamsburg
Community. The club welcomes new members who have an interest in gardening. For more infor-
mation about the club and its activities, please visit the website at www.williamsburg-garden-club.org.

Wresting, Track and Field, Baseball, and Softball focus of Ohio High School Board of Directors Meeting At the most recent meeting of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) Board of Directors several items of interest pertaining
to Clermont County schools were discussed. The first-ever dual team state wrestling tournament will begin during the 201213 season. It will be conducted in a seeded, regional format (similar to football) and will conclude the week prior to the sectional round of the individual state tournament. The dual team state tournament will be a one-day event consisting of quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. The track and field coaches association withdrew its proposal to add the triple jump (hop, skip, and jump) to the list of events to be contested at the state tournament. The board approved a proposal on how runners qualify from the semifinals to the finals at the OHSAA regional and state tournaments. The change stipulates that the first two placers in both semifinal heats will qualify to the finals, plus the next four fastest times, overall, regardless of heat. The top two placers in both semifinals and the next five fastest times will advance to the finals at the state meet. Beginning in 2012, practices and games may begin the Saturday prior to the previously announced Monday start date. In 2012 practice may start March 3 instead of March 5 and
games may begin March 24 instead of March 26. Pitchers and catchers may still begin practice on Feb. 20, 2012. The junior high committee has completed a brochure that addresses such issues as eligibility, non-interscholastic participation, and recruiting.
