Local guardsman honored for his service in Iraq Wilson’s convoy was one of the last to return BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
Pfc. William “Kameron” Wilson of the United States Army National Guard was honored by Clermont County Commissioners April 30 for his service to the country. Wilson, a Bethel Tate High School graduate, returned from his deployment in December of 2011 in time to be there for the birth of his daughter, Lillian Aubrie Wilson. The guardsman said it was nice to be able to be home and be with his family, especially because his unit was in charge of convoy security and was one of the last units to return from the country. “It was kind of scary at times when we were the only convoy around,” Wilson said. “Luckily my sec-
tion didn’t get attacked, but others in our company did.” Wilson said he joined the Kentucky National Guard because he wanted to make a career out of the military. He said he volunteered for deployment and left for his first tour in Iraq in August of 2011. He said the experience of his first deployment was definitely scary, but he said he went in to the deployment prepared and almost prepared for the worst. Wilson said now that he is home from his deployment he will focus on finishing college at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College. He said he would like to serve a second deployment and continue to be involved in the military. “I definitely want to try to make it to Afghanistan,” Wilson said. “I’d like to experience both.” Wilson was honored by a room full of people at the commissioners’ session including Commissioners Ed Humphrey, David Uible and Bob Proud, Danny Bare of the Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commis-

National Day of Prayer observed in Batavia Dozens attend annual event on courthouse steps BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
The National Day of Prayer was celebrated in Batavia May 3 during a program held in front of the courthouse on Main Street. The ceremony began with Bible readings and went on to include several prayers and songs as well as recognition of the county’s military personnel, police officers, EMS, government officials, and children. “I think it is great,” Judith Kelch, of Union Township, said about the ceremony. “The importance of the day is for the nation to recognize him and praise him. One day set a side a year isn’t very much.” Kelch said she is glad the
county holds a ceremony to observe the day of prayer. She said if they didn’t she would question living in this community. Clermont County Commissioner Bob Proud led the ceremony, and he invited pastors and preachers from a variety of churches to lead prayers. “We are so blessed to have you out here,” Proud said to those who attended the event. “And praise God we are not afraid to come out here.” Proud spoke about the importance of the freedom of religion in the country, and thanked his fellow government officials, as well as community members, for coming out to celebrate the occasion.
Clermont County Auditor Linda Fraley, Judge Victor Haddad and former clerk David Caudill also spoke during the ceremony. “I want to stand before you and tell you prayer works,” Fraley said when she spoke at the event. Proud also took time to pray for, and recognize a variety of those who put themselves in harm’s way and serve others in the county including veterans, military men and women, police officers, EMS workers and government officials. He also took time to pray for the children in the county. Several local singers performed at the ceremony including Eve, Sarahann and Tabitha Moody, John Hale and Jennifer Thomas. “I think it’s important we pray for our nation,” Doris Ivan, of Batavia, said about the occasion. “I think we

Several trees in Burke Park treated with pesticide BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI

The village of Bethel teamed up with Back Tree Services and ArborJet to chemically treat several trees in Burke Park May 3 to prevent infestation of the Asian longhorned beetle, which was discovered in Tate Township last June. Travis Dotson, village administrator, said the trees treated are not infested by the Asian longhorned beetle, however they are considered host trees that have a higher risk of become infested. Dotson said they are still waiting to receive the second environmental assessment from the United States Department of Agriculture
Plant and Animal Health Inspection Service, which will reveal the organization’s research on treatment options for the high risk host trees. “In advance of that we wanted to do a demonstration on how easy the chemical treatment was,” Dotson said. Dotson said the village decided to treat the trees in Burke Park as a demonstration, and they are looking into chemically treating all of the trees in the park. “ArborJet is one of the main players as far as the chemical treatment nation wide,” Dotson said. “They donated a liter (of treatment) and Back Tree Services donated their labor to treat five trees.”
Dotson said the chemical in the treatment is called Imidacloprid. He said the chemicals are non-toxic, safe substances. “It was impressive to see how quickly the tree absorbed it up into the trunk,” Dotson said about the treatment. “And impressive to see how quickly the process goes.” Dotson said after the crew was finished treating the trees there were no obvious signs of treatment because the chemicals were absorbed into the tree. He said trees treated with the chemicals were each marked with a silver medallion. “We want to protect the host trees,” Dotson said about deciding to chemically treat the trees. “We are looking at treating maple trees, which are the prime host trees, and some ash trees. The treatment should

Mt. Nebo To Celebrate Building Completion On Sunday, May 20th, Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church invites the community to join them to celebrate the completion of their new church building. The project adds space that will enable the church to offer a better welcome to guests than the previous building allowed. The main part of the older facility, which was built in 1892, served as a wonderful tool for ministry for many years and will continue to be utilized for other ministry purposes. However, the new building will provide a greater capacity for parking and seating. Worship services for the May 20th Celebration Sunday will be offered at 9:00am and 11:00am. A reception and tours will be offered starting at 10:15am. The Mt. Nebo congregation would be honored to have the community join them for this joyful occasion. The church is located at 11693 State Route 774 just three miles north of Hamersville

Batavia votes to hire counsel
Wilson
BY ART HUNTER
Continued from page 1 Schmidt and both Sheriff Rodenberg and Bare presented Wilson with a challenge coin. “I am glad you made it back safely and I am glad we are out of there,” Sheriff Rodenberg said during the meeting. Bare also gave Wilson information about the services offered for veterans at the Veterans’ Service Commission in the county and told him about upcoming events. “What we do in our office is assist each and every veteran,” he said. Wilson said he had no idea there would be so many people there to honor him at the meeting. He said he thought he was just going to the meeting to help lead the Pledge of Allegiance. “I am really excited and kind of shocked that the county cares this much,” Wilson said. “When you get back and you get recognized it is nice and appreciated.”

Batavia Village Council has hired outside legal counsel to look into actions Batavia Township has taken regarding a planned annexation by the village. Council took the action on the recommendation of village administrator Dennis Nichols. “The board of trustees is actively trying to block an annexation, and they have no business doing that,”

Nichols said at council’s special meeting Monday, April 30. “What they’ve done so far constitutes what in law is called tortious interference.” Tortious interference occurs when a person intentionally damages another’s contractual relationship. The village is currently working on a third annexation. The properties involved are along the Route 32 corridor, and will include the county engineer’s office, juvenile court, building department, Batavia High School and others. According to Nichols, the township has had contact with the property owner who petitioned to have his property annexed, and that individual has since withdrawn his petition. In addition to legal guidance on what village officials see as tortious interference, council is seeking legal guidance on how to respond to what officials see as a violation of Ohio’s Open Meetings Act. Nichols said that on
April 16, the Batavia Township Trustees, the fiscal officer, and township administrator traveled to Columbus, presumably to seek legal advice on opposing the annexation. He said he sent a public records request to the trustees seeking information about the nature of the trip and minutes from the meeting. Neither Nichols nor village council members were satisfied with the township’s response. Councilman Steve Staton said that he wants to see this issue addressed. “As part of the cost of this special counsel, I would like to seek their advice and guidance on filing a complaint with the attorney general’s office,” Staton said. Staton said that the only thing the village is seeking is to prevent the trustees from interfering in the annexation process. “We want them to confine themselves to what the law stipulates in type two annexations,” Staton said.

Since the trees were treated in Burke Park May 3, USDA-APHIS released their second environmental assessment, which highlights alternatives for continuing eradication in Ohio. Once the public has had an opportunity to review and comment about the assessment, USDA-APHIS officials will decide on an alternative for continuing the eradication process. we could someday attain “millionaire” status. While there are no perfect formulas or guarantees, here are some steps to consider when working toward any investment goal: Put time on your side. The earlier you begin saving and investing, the better your chances of reaching your financial
goal. You can’t expect to “strike it rich” immediately with any single investment, but by investing year in and year out, and by choosing quality investment vehicles, you have the opportunity to achieve growth over time. • Pay yourself first. If you wait until you “have a little extra money lying

you advance in your career, you can increase your contributions. • Control your debts. It’s easier said than done, but if you can keep a lid on your debt payments, you’ll have more money with which to invest. • Take advantage of tax deferral. When you invest in tax-deferred vehicles, such as a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, your money has the opportunity to grow faster than it would if placed in an investment on which you paid taxes each year. Of course, when you start taking withdrawals, presumably at retirement, you’ll have to pay taxes, but by then, you may be in a lower tax bracket. And since you’ll have some control over your withdrawals, you can help control taxes, too. • Build share ownership. As an investor, one of the best things you can do to build your wealth is to increase the number of shares you own in your investments. So, look for buying opportunities, such as when prices are low. Also, consider reinvesting any dividends or distributions you may receive from your investments.

• Don’t be overly cautious. For your money to grow, you need to put a portion of your investment dollars in growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks. It is certainly true that stock prices will always fluctuate, sometimes quite sharply, and you may receive more or less than your original investment when sold. But if you avoid stocks entirely in favor of more stable vehicles, you run the risk of earning returns that may not keep you ahead of inflation. As you approach retirement, and even during retirement, your portfolio will probably still need some growth potential. Work with your financial advisor to determine the appropriate approach for you. • Think long term. By creating a long-term investment strategy and sticking to it, you’ll be less likely to take a “timeout” from investing in response to perceived negative news, such as market downturns and political crises. Following these suggestions may someday allow you to reach the point when your financial goals become a reality for you. Article submitted by S. Christian Wilks, an Investment Representative with Edward Jones, Milford.
ODNR clarifies new rules The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife has issued a statewide directive to its enforcement officers to clarify guidelines for enforcing a new rule that specifies the condition of fish fillets being kept or transported. “Many Ohio anglers have expressed that they were confused about the fillet rule so I asked our Division of Wildlife to clarify the rule so no innocent angler stands a chance of getting in to trouble when they are trying to follow the law,” said ODNR Director James Zehringer. The rule, Ohio Administrative Code 1501:31-1308, states that it is unlawful to possess or transport a fish unless the fish is in the round or a complete fillet with skin attached until a person reaches their permanent residence. The confusion surrounding the question of whether the skin had to be kept on the entire fillet or whether a patch of skin to identify the fish species would suffice. Many Lake Erie anglers come to the lake for a few days or a week to sample the world class fishery, and anglers may be bringing home several days’ limits of the various species. After a thorough review, a directive sent today to wildlife officers from Scott Zody, chief of the Division of Wildlife, specified that the rule should be interpreted to mean that only a patch of skin, enough to identify the species of the fish is required to be left on the fillet. Changes will be made this fall during the regular rule-making package to further clarify the requirement in code. The rule is designed as a tool to protect the valuable Lake Erie fishing resource and to allow wildlife officers to identify fillets in an angler’s possession. “Our goal was to protect the state’s most valuable fishery,” said Zody. “It was not our intent to create a hardship for anglers, who bring a tremendous economic benefit to the state.” ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at www.ohiodnr.com.

For years now, your mother has perfected the Art of Unrequested Advice. It started when she told you not to bring your favorite toy to Show & Tell because you’d lose it – and she was right. You spent your childhood hearing that you “need a sweater,” and she was usually right about that, too. And that boy you dated in high school? The one she hated? We won’t go there… Now you have children of your own and Mom’s still at it - but while the advice you get from her might go unrequested, it’s surely not unwelcome. So why not give Mom a little dose of her own medicine, in the form of two great new books? If it’s been awhile since she’s been around little ones – or if you’re a new mother yourself – then “How to Rock Your Baby” by Erin Bried” is a book you’ll want to tuck in the diaper bag, just so you’re prepared. This small but extremely helpful book starts out at the beginning, even before the baby’s born. How do you deal with morning sickness? What, exactly, should you eat “for two?” What do you do about mood swings (and how can people around you help?) How do you know it’s really labor, and how do you make sure you actually get to the hospital in one piece? Once the baby’s here, you’ll want to know how to calm a crier; take a temperature; make toys, baby food, and burp cloths; how to find Mom-Time and get some sleep; and how to do those other important things that mothers have been advising one another about for generations. I liked “How to Rock Your Baby” because I think it’s great for new moms and for Grandmas who want a brush-up. Author Erin Bried also made this a nice reference book for babysitters and honorary aunties, too. Every mother, no matter

pens when they turn to murder to solve their problems, with hilarious results. The show runs May 18, 19, 25, and 26 at the Gaslight Theater in the heart of Georgetown. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. each night. For more information call (513) 378-9007 and tickets are $8 at the door.

how old her babies are, knows that stuff happens – and it usually happens when you don’t have time to deal with it. Like most moms, you follow the Boy Scouts oath: always be prepared. Just in case, though, you’ll want to have “Survival Mom” by Lisa Bedford on hand. “Survival Mom” is another one of those superhelpful books that you can use as reference, but this one is for fixing minor annoyances as well as dealing with those huge disasters you hope you never have. Beginning with water
(how basic can you get?) and moving to emergency shelter, food security and gardening, finances, medical crises, power outages, firearms, major disasters and worse, this book takes things step-by-step. It’s very easy to read, contains lots of side-bars and quicktakes, and author Lisa Bedford also includes stories from mothers who’ve lived through disasters of all kinds. In reading this book, I was astounded at what I didn’t know (gulp!)… If you’re somebody’s mother or if you need something to help your own
