All Creatures Animal Hospital hosts annual camp Students learn what it takes to be a veterinarian Sun staff

The All Creatures Animal Hospital in Amelia was busier than usual July 18 22, as a group of students spent the week getting a taste of veterinary medicine during Vet Camp 2011. The animal hospital has hosted the vet camp for nine years in an effort to expose students to the field of veterinary medicine. This year, more than a dozen animalloving students, age 12 - 18, participated in the hospital’s two separate summer camps. Dr. Dan Meakin, All Creatures Animal Hospital’s owner and primary veterinarian, came up with the idea for a summer camp after he visited schools to talk about his career. And while Dr. Meakin said having the campers there makes the hospital a little crazy for a week, he wouldn’t have it any other way. “The reason it’s a good idea is because about 50 percent of people wanted to be a vet at some point in their life,” Dr. Meakin said. “But they’re not aware of what is required.” Dr. Meakin said students at vet camp get to see how much dedication and time is put into becoming and work-

ing as a veterinarian or vet tech as well as experience some of the procedures the vets have to perform. “For some of them it changes their lives,” Dr. Meakin said about the camp. “For others it reinforces them that’s what they want to do.” Vet camp is set up similar to a residency in the medical field. Students have homework, quizzes and get to shadow veterinarians during their daily activities. Camp is structured so that students get to rotate through a variety of areas including in-patient, out-patient, reception, boarding and surgery. “I am really interested in animals and interested in being a vet,” Laura Hendrixson, a Mount Notredame High School student said. “I wanted to get experience and see what it is like behind the scenes.” Hendrixson said one of the things that surprised her about the field, was how much time the veterinarians and technicians spend getting ready for the day. She said her and other campers spent time setting up heart worm tests, fecal tests and taking care of animals, in addition to shadowing the vets. Kelly Griffis, a vet technician at the hospital, said she

attended camp before pursing a career in veterinary medicine, and she was happy she experienced it first. Griffis said she planned on being a veterinarian, but once she attended camp, she decided she like the vet technician position better. “That’s why we do this,” Griffis said about the camp.

“Some people like one area better.” Griffis pursued a career as a vet tech and was later hired by All Creatures Animal Hospital. Dr. Meakin said sometimes students will come to camp, volunteer at the hospital as they go through school and set themselves up for a job working at

the hospital. So, while vet camp may be a slight interruption in the daily routine at the hospital, it is beneficial to both parties involved. “I thought it was really unique,” Kendall Smith, a Covington Latin School student, said about camp. “There aren’t a lot of people

that would invite you in to look around and ask questions. I’ve learned a lot.” The July 18 to 22 camp was the last 2011 summer camp. Students interested in attending a camp next year can find the application and information on the hospital’s website, http://allcreatures.com.

Gunner’s mate returns from nine month deployment BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Chris Dennison has been busy since he returned from his deployment. The U.S. Navy Gunner’s Mate bought a car, returned home to Clermont County, surprised his mother, Genny Dennison, and was honored at the commissioners regular session July 20. “I made it back here last week,” Dennison said. “I am glad to be back, sleeping in a bed with a shower close and not having to wear shoes.” Dennison said he bought a car once he was back in the states and drove home to surprised his mom while she was out shopping. Since then, he said he has been reconnecting with friends and enjoying all the things about home that he missed while he was away. “It was great,” Dennison said about coming home. “To see color. There is sand everywhere (there).”

Dennison said when he got back to the United States he took his shoes off and just walked around in the grass. As a Navy Gunner’s Mate, Dennison’s duty required him to be in several countries including Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain and more. He was deployed in October of 2010 and was involved with Operation Enduring Freedom as well as Operation New Dawn. Dennison’s job was to run a secure 24-hour armory as well as maintain and provide the equipment and weapons needed for daily tasks. Whether he was in Iraq where they were de-constructing a base camp or in Bahrain where they were protecting oil platforms, Dennison said he made sure everyone had the necessary equipment for security. “We felt we left it better than we got there,” Dennison said about his service in the countries. “I was glad I got to contribute and make it back.”

The New Richmond High School graduate said he decided to serve because he had wanted to for years and realized he was almost too old. A recruiter for the Navy came to a yard sale Dennison was having one day, and after they spoke, Dennison decided it was time, and he joined just before he turned 38. “I thought it was a good decision,” Dennison said. “I don’t regret it at all.” For his service, Clermont County Commissioners, Rodger Young of the Veterans’ Service Commission, Sheriff Tim Rodenberg, Steve Caraway on behalf of Congresswoman Jean Schmidt and Tracy Braden of The Thank You Foundation all honored Dennison at the commissioners’ session. “I am always amazed at your dedication and willingness to serve in places none of the rest of us want to go,” Braden said.

Braden had just returned from seeing her son Matt off on his second deployment and understands the emotional roller coaster in having loved ones leave and return from duty. Dennison said the effort

everyone made to honor him at the session was greatly appreciated. He said everyone asked great questions and presented him with helpful information. “It was unexpected,” Dennison said. “I was

touched by the amount of people who were here.” Dennison will not be deployed again for at least four years, but will return to a base in Michigan for reserve work once a month after 60 days.

Hobo Handbook describes life as modern hobo BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Your mortgage bill came today. The payment went up. The local energy company is asking for an increase, too. Property taxes are going up, the cost of food is rising, clothing is up, and getaway prices are in the stratosphere because – you guessed it – the price of gas is up. So what’s down? Your paycheck and your mood. Did you ever wish you could chuck it all, tie your belongings in a handkerchief on a pole, and head for the road? Maybe that’s not so far-fetched after all. Read “The Hobo Handbook” by Josh Mack and see what you think. Though the stereotypical Depression-era freeloader

probably comes to mind when you hear the word, legend says that the first hobos were Civil War soldiers who, looking for an easy way home, hopped aboard a train. Others followed suit in search of jobs, finding them on the railroad and afield. Because of their willingness to take work that nobody else wanted, in fact, Mack says that hobos – or “hoe boys” played “a major role in the development of the west.” A hobo, by definition, was someone who traveled and worked. A tramp was someone who traveled but didn’t work. A bum did neither. Back then, you had to be sure you called a man right. Yet, though they had jobs and income, hobos were often considered vagrants and were persecuted in many towns. To avoid that, they formed their own union, created their own slanguage, and devised a system of signals for communication. Even now, hobos hold annual conventions in Iowa to crown a yearly King and Queen.

“The Hobo Handbook: A Field Guide to Living by Your Own Rules” by Josh Mack c.2011, Adams Media $14.95 / $16.99 Canada 218 pages

So is it possible to be a modern-day hobo? Mack says it is, but you need to do your research first. Sleep outside beneath a tree on a cold, rainy night for a taste of road life. Familiarize yourself with transportation; not all hobos ride the rails. And if you do decide to hop a train, it’s

essential that you know what you’re doing: “greasing the tracks” and becoming a statistic is exceedingly, dangerously easy. Oh, and that handkerchief tied on a stick? Forget it. Did you really think it would hold everything you need? It’s very tempting to think of “The Hobo Handbook” as humor. Author Josh Mack includes in the front of his book a tongue-in-cheek quiz to assess your readiness and ability to embrace the hobo life. Take the quiz, get your laughs, then prepare to learn because the rest of his book is as serious as a railroad bull. Mack paints a picture of freedom mixed with cold and boredom, the dangers of hopping a freight train, and all the reasons you shouldn’t. Still: could you do it? Could you leave comfort and current life behind? I liked this book for that tantalizing, ticklish thought Mack dangles before his readers. If you’re eager to find out what James Michener, Boris Yeltsin, Jack Dempsey, and Merle Haggard have in common, then this book is perfect. For you, “The Hobo Handbook” should move up on your list.

BANKRUPTCY TOO MUCH DEBT? NOT ENOUGH MONEY?

BY STEVE BOEHME

CALL KELLY & WALLACE

The first step for many home landscape projects is to build a retaining wall, creating a raised bed. This is easy to do with interlocking retaining wall blocks available in many colors to compliment your home. Retaining walls give your landscape a neat, professional appearance, keep lawn grass out of landscape beds, and allow drainage. This is very good for plants, easy to maintain, and attractive. Raised beds can be filled with topsoil and mulch so that shrubs and perennials can be planted without digging down into the native heavy clay soil. Retaining walls can also be used to prevent washouts, redirect storm water runoff and contain backfill next to your home. The most popular wall block shapes are 12 inches long and four inches high, and weigh only 25 pounds. Small blocks are recommended for walls no higher than two feet. For taller walls, and places where vehicles come close to your wall, we prefer “oversize” blocks like Allan Block “AB Classic” or Reading Rock “Aultwall Oversize”. Measuring eighteen inches long by six or eight inches tall, these are better for walls where more strength is needed. It is easy to calculate how

you return extra blocks if you over-estimate. The most important step in wall building is making a level footer or base. If your first course is level your wall will be level. Dig down a few inches deep and add crushed stone, tamping it thoroughly so your wall won’t settle. Make your footer trench wide enough so you can rake the stone smooth and level. As you place each block, use a level to make sure it’s even with the rest. Place a block of wood on it and tamp with a sledgehammer, checking with a level. When you lay the second course, give each block a thump to keep it from rocking. Make sure the wall is level from front to back as well as side to side. The more careful you are the better your wall will look. Another important point is that the backfill just behind your wall should be clean

gravel, not soil. This allows water to easily drain, and keeps the wall from becoming stained with mud. Make sure there is a way for water to drain from behind your wall. Water buildup behind retaining walls weakens them, and waterlogged soil pushes the wall over when it freezes. Once you get the knack of retaining wall building, you can make professional-looking walls quickly and easily. You’ll be proud of your work and you’ll soon see more places where the right wall would improve your landscape. much you’ll need by measuring along the outside edge of your wall project. Multiply the length times the average height to find out the total amount of “face feet”. Wall blocks vary in size, but each design covers a specific “face footage.” For each foot of wall you will need three small 4x12 inch blocks or one 8x18 inch block. Larger blocks cost more apiece but cover more face feet, so building with larger blocks can often cost less than using small blocks. Block manufacturers like Allan Block and Reading Rock have excellent websites with wall ideas and installation tips. Local hardscape dealers like GoodSeed Farm can help you design and build your wall project, or can do it for you. Look for installers that are manufacturer certified. Poorly designed or improperly installed walls can be dangerous, and expensive to fix. Good quality blocks are molded with crisp, clean edges making them easy to stack straight, with a “split face.” Find a block supplier close to home (blocks are heavy) that stocks the same colors year after year, from a quality manufacturer that is careful about matching pigments. This makes it easy to add to your project or build matching walls in future years. A good supplier will let

We’re in the “Dog Days” of summer – traditionally the hottest, steamiest time of year. But in a few weeks, the temperatures will begin to cool down. Nature isn’t alone in this heating-and-cooling pattern — you can also find evidence of it in the investment world. To be specific, today’s “hot” investments can lose their sizzle quickly — which means that, as an investor, you’ll need to take steps to avoid being left out in the cold. An investment can become “hot” — that is, its price can shoot up — for any of a number of reasons. For example, a company that provides a wellknown product or service may decide to “go public” by making its shares available to investors; when this happens, the stocks become “hot” for a

while. An investment may also become hot if a favorable event occurs, as might be the case with a drug company that gains permission to sell a medicine that’s much in demand. And some investments heat up because an “expert” is touting them in the media. But although different investments may get hot for different reasons, they all share one thing in common: They will cool off. In fact, by the time you and many other investors hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. If you buy into an investment that’s been hot for a while, you should recognize that its “upside potential” may not be what you think. To help achieve your financial goals, you may be better

off by not chasing after hot stocks. Instead, consider these ideas: • Increase share ownership. One key to building wealth is to increase the amount of shares you own in your investments. Hot stocks are often expensive stocks, so you may be limited in the number of shares you can purchase. As an alternative, look for quality investments that are trading at reasonable prices. You might also consider buying additional shares in quality companies you already own. • Buy appropriate investments. Even if you can afford to buy some shares in hot stocks, should you? These stocks may not be suitable for your needs, for any number of reasons: too risky for your risk tolerance, too similar to other

stocks you already own, and so on. You need to own investments that are appropriate for your individual needs. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that any investment in stocks — whether hot or not — will fluctuate with changes in market conditions and may be worth more or less than your original investment when you sell. • Diversify your holdings. By continually pursuing hot investments, you might end up with an unbalanced, nondiversified portfolio. By diversifying your holdings, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. However, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss. • Think long term. Chasing hot stocks is strictly a short-

term move. Successful investors adhere to long-term strategies that require discipline, patience and a constant focus on the future. By following these suggestions, you’re unlikely to experience the “thrill” of chasing after hot investments — but

you will get the satisfaction of building a portfolio designed to help meet your important investment goals.

Flea allergy may be the cause of your pet’s scratching BY DR. DAN MEAKIN At All Creatures Animal Hospital our veterinarians hear it every day, “My pet won’t stop itching, but I can’t find any fleas!” These exasperated clients come to us in hopes we will give them a diagnosis – any diagnosis – that will help relieve their pets’ itchy skin. Many of our clients, even those who use year-round parasite preventives on their pets, are reluctant to accept the fact that flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) could actually be causing the problem. That’s because they don’t understand how fleas affect their pet. Many pet owners believe that because they’ve administered preventive products fleas can’t get to their pet at all. What they need to realize is that while preventive products do kill

DR. DAN MEAKIN ALL CREATURES ANIMAL HOSPITAL

fleas, there’s a bit of a delay before it happens. And that delay is long enough for a flea to sink its teeth in your pet’s skin. Veterinarian prescribed flea products work well for the average patient, but when pets go outside, fleas are hatching and jumping on them from the yard, and the products don’t kill the fleas instantly. No matter when the product was applied to the pet, you’re always going to have that little delay. Once bitten by a flea, dogs and cats react with skin allergies from the saliva of the flea and exhibit

uncontrollable itching. Wild animals in your yard can harbor dog and cat fleas as well, and frequently do pass them on to your pets. When a pet presents with itchy skin, we must always keep in mind that fleas are one of the most common causes, even if you can’t see a single flea. Sometimes fleas are hard to spot, they’re very quick. Cats lick and swallow them, and the thick coats of some dogs make them hard to see. If a dog is itching constantly around its tail base, hind legs, and groin, or if a cat scratches constantly around its neck or licks to the point of removing hair, FAD could likely be the cause and the client needs to bring the pet in for an examination. FAD is actually a good diagnosis because it can be

controlled. It’s all about educating clients and using the products we have to eliminate your pets’ fleas, but understanding the limitations of those products. As new parasite preventive products emerge, the fight against fleas will continue to evolve. So stay on top of the newest products from your veterinarian and know how to spot the signs of flea allergy dermatitis. Owners can always trust the products purchased from their veterinarian are going to better, guaranteed, and safer than over the counter flea products. “Support available for caregivers” Family members most often serve as caregivers for frail older adults

Daughter Christine, right, shares a special moment with her mother, Virginia. Christine is the primary caregiver for Virginia who regularly attends the CSS Adult Day Service Welcome Center. For information on the Welcome Center or other agency programs, call 724-1255.

People tend to think that most elderly people live in nursing homes. According to Linda Breytspraak of the Center on Aging Studies at the University of MissouriKansa City, only about 4.2 percent of Americans 65 and older occupy nursing homes at any given time. This means that many frail older adults live at home and require a certain amount of assisted care from someone else. Often the care of elderly parents often rests on the adult children. Most children accept this responsibility willingly, even though they have not had much respite between the tasks of child rearing and caregiving of parents. Caring for a spouse is especially difficult. Caregiving 24/7 is a level of commitment that people cannot understand unless they experience it. Many times the well spouse neglects his or her own health, and in fact, elderly caregivers have a 63 percent higher mortality rate than non-caregivers of the same age. Being a caregiver to an elderly, frail loved one can bring on a level of stress never felt before. What can caregivers do in the face of all these demands? First, realize that it's OK to ask

for help and admit that caregiving is tougher than they expected. Second, know when it's time to ask for help from services in the community. It’s important for caregivers to take a break from caregiving. The Adult Day Service Welcome Center, sponsored by Clermont Senior Services, offers a respite opportunity for caregivers. This program provides a safe, caring environment for family members that need socialization in a supervised setting. Another way to lower stress is to learn how to handle difficult behaviors. C a r e g i v e r Support/Discussion Groups provide a great outlet. Listening to others dealing with the same problems, and learning about resources and techniques can really help. Clermont Senior Services Case Manager, Pam Scott, has started a new caregiver support group. Pam understands the stress of caregiving and has a heart for those dealing with it. The group meets at 10:30 a.m. the third Tuesday of every month at the Clermont Senior Services office at 2085 James E. Sauls Sr. Drive in Batavia -just across the parking lot from

the YMCA. The husband of one of the CSS Adult Day customers commented that because his wife attends the Welcome Center, he has time to clean, cook, make appointments and even do a little part-time work at home. He said there would be no way for him to carry on without the Adult Day Program; and he is attending the new support group. Some of the reasons he plans to attend are the opportunity to share experiences, learn some tips on handing difficult situations and share some of his feelings and frustrations with people who live in similar situations. He said no one truly knows what it is like – not even his children who are very caring and supportive. This support group is open to anyone caring for and/or making decisions for an older adult living in Clermont County. There is no charge for participation, but pre-registration is helpful. If you have an interest, please call Pam at 5364038. The time spent on learning ways to cope will help you deal with the strains of caregiving and help you continue to enjoy the relationship you have established with your loved one.

Caregivers find friendship and support at caregiver support group We live in the time of the “sandwich generation” where parents and grandparents find themselves caring for their children and grandchildren while also caring for their elderly parents or grandparents. Most of these caregivers juggle work schedules with caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers face multiple stressful situations including handling agitated and/or embarrassing behaviors, dealing with non-supportive family members and stress of taking care of a family member/friend day in and day out that may bear little resemblance to the person they have known. It is so important for caregivers to feel that they are not alone, says Pam Scott, RN, support services case manager for Clermont Senior Services. “It is essential that they have a voice. They spend so much time focusing on the person they care for that they often don’t do anything that focuses on their own needs.” Pam conducts a monthly caregiver support group sponsored by Clermont Senior Services and encourages caregivers to attend her group or similar groups throughout the county. “When caregivers meet with other caregivers they get to hear how others in similar circumstances handle situations and gain educational information as needed,” she says. Stress is a very real and affects the mind and the body. “Statistics show that attending a caregiver support group decreases stress and helps the caregiver to maintain their health,” Pam says. Not only does the new CSS caregiver support group benefit participants, it also has a positive affect on Pam. “It is an honor and privilege for me to facilitate this group of amazing caregivers. It has motivated me to do my very best to try to make each one of them feel welcomed, safe and supported,” Pam says, stressing that the group is for them. “My goal is for them to feel part of something good, experience less stress and, in some way, leave each meeting renewed.” The CSS caregiver support group meets at 10:30 a.m. the third Tuesday of the month at the Clermont Senior Services administration building, 2085 James E. Sauls Drive (across the parking lot from the YMCA). For information on the caregiver group, call Pam at 523-536-4038. For information on any of the programs at Clermont Senior Services, call 513-7241255.

Clermont Transportation Connection will hold a series of four public hearings to obtain community input on a proposal to increase passenger fare rates for CTC and Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) bus services. CTC has proposed the rate increase, faced with a growing demand for service and a shrinking operating budget. “We are projecting an operating deficit for 2012,” said

B R O A D S H E E T

CTC Director Ben Capelle. “We have to rely on local contracts, federal grants, and passenger fares to fund CTC. Unfortunately, the only way we can keep the system operating is to increase fares.” CTC and SORTA combined provide 250,000 trips to county citizens each year. The proposed increase could impact both CTC’s express and door-to-door services, along with Metro routes 82X, 28, and 29X; CTC is responsi-

ble for much of the funding for Metro services in Clermont County. The public hearings will be held on Monday, Aug. 1, 6 p.m., at the Amelia Branch of the Clermont County Public Library (Meeting Room), located at 58 Maple Street in Amelia; Tuesday, Aug. 2, 6 p.m., at the Union Township Civic Center (Trustee Meeting Room), located at 4350 Aicholtz Road in Union Township; Wednesday, Aug.

The CTC express route fees could increase adult fares from $3 to $4.25; adult fares for local routes could increase from $2 to $4.25. SORTA express routes could increase adult fares from $3 to $4.25.
