Cincinnati Reds players visit rookie league Valuable lessons taught each day of camp BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Cincinnati Reds players Devin Mesoraco and Todd Frazier visited children at the Reds Rookie Success League on sponsor day June 25 at the Batavia Township Community Center. The two players spoke to the group of more than 100 campers, answered questions and helped pitch during baseball games. Mesoraco, a catcher, and Frazier, an infielder, talked to the group about why it is important to be determined and remember to use the words they learned at camp including respect, integrity and spirit. The camp, which is being

held in Clermont County for the first time, is designed to help build character while also teaching children baseball skills. “You’ve got to be happy with yourself and live life,” Frazier told campers. “Show determination, always bring energy and spirit and respect people. That is the bottom line.” Both Mesoraco and Frazier talked about working hard to excel at baseball from when they were young until today. They answered a slew of questions from children at camp from how many home runs they have hit to what it feels like to get knocked over on the field. For many campers, being able to meet and talk with the Reds players was their favorite part of camp, but many also talked about how much they learned at camp. “I learned you have to be nice, you have to be determined, you have to have Baseball, Page 3

Amelia preparing to widen state Route 125 Project is part of TIF district improvements BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Amelia village officials are preparing to improve infrastructure near the potential site of the Kroger Marketplace off of state Route 125 in the village. Mayor Todd Hart said the improvement projects are a result of the tax increment financing district council members recently passed for the piece of land near

Amelia-Olive Branch Road in the village. The TIF district allows the village to pay for infrastructure improvements in the area now with anticipated future revenues from the increase in property value. “This whole project has been a fast-paced project,” Hart said. “That's saying everyone out there is working together.” Hart said the village

plans to begin preparations for road-widening improvements in July that will include moving electric poles back off of the road. Hart said the cost involved in moving the poles is part of a contract the village has with Cincinnati Bell and Duke Energy. He said moving the poles will not involve the use of any TIF funds. “The whole project on the roadway hinges on the pole movement,” Hart said. Hart said Cincinnati Bell and Duke Energy officials have been helpful in moving the project forward

quickly. He said the project to move the poles is set to begin July 9. Once the poles have been moved, Hart said they can begin the roadway project, which will include the construction of a turn lane near the Tall Trees development on SR 125. “Our biggest factor is congestion of traffic,” Hart said. “With everyone trying to make the left had turn into Tall Trees, it's caused several accidents.” Hart said the village has set up bonds to pay for the road-widening project, but the bonds will be paid off

using TIF revenues. Hart said village officials had to work with property owners before they could make any improvements. “All the property acquisitions are done,” Hart said. “They have already been filed.” Hart said he is impressed with how hard village officials have worked on the entire project. “The ball is not in our court anymore,” Hart said. Hart said Kroger officials have not closed on the property, but he hopes everything will be finalized soon. In addition to TIF im-

provements, village council members also gave Hart permission to hire a surveyor to look at land the village owns off of Hicks Place. “We have a right of way that goes through there,” Hart said. Hart said they wanted to make sure the right of way was owned by the village. “There is a property owner who has taken it upon himself to improve the property that is our right of way,” Hart said. He said the survey was

Members of the River Trails Garden Club in New Richmond awarded the winners of the Roadside Beatification Flower Pot Contest June 25. Sharon Enderle, one of the members of the club, organized the contest this year as an effort to get local business owners and residents involved in making the village more visually appealing. Enderle said Diane Mott, another member, came up with the idea for the contest several years ago and the contest has been held for four years.

“We had a whole big movement with the community and businesses getting together to improve this area,” Mott said. Mott said she was familiar with the Bikes in Bloom contest held annually in Milford and wanted to do something similar in New Richmond. She said they decided on large flower pots that businesses or residents could purchase and then place near the street. Enderle said there were six entries in the contest this year. She said the entry fee was $15. Enderle said members of the garden club who did not participate judged the

flower pots based on specific criteria including creativity, color and more. She said most of the flowers used by contestants came from either Grant Career Center in Bethel or The Cottage Garden Greenhouse in New Richmond. First, second and third place flower pot contestants were awarded with cash prizes June 25. The flower pot created by Carol Dieckman and Girl Scout Troop 41724 received third place in the contest. The flow pot is located at the Gowdy House on George Street in the village. “I thought it looked great,” Dieckman said about the flower pot. Dieckman said Girl Scout

Luke Dunaway, a 9-yearold from Felicity, also said he learned a lot during camp. “You have to be determined and have faith you can do things,” Dunaway said. “You have to have education and you have to respect others while they are talking.” Debbie Heck, of Williamsburg, brought two of her children to participate in the camp and said she thought that the camp was just going to be about baseball. “The fact that it is lots more than that is amazing,” Heck said. “I was telling someone we could do one of those ‘Priceless’ commercials.” Heck said she has been able to see what her children are learning after attending camp. “They’ve been practicing all the words they have learned and they are picking up litter,” she said. During sponsor day June 25, many of the organizations, individuals and volunteers were recognized for contributing to the Reds

Diane Mott created the second place flower pot located outside of her home on Front Street in New Richmond. Mott said she was excited to be able to participate in the contest this year since she let Enderle organize the contest. The winner of the 2012 contest was Chuck and Marcie Ware with Hunter Custom Homes who created a flower pot that was place outside of Rivertown Market IGA off of US 52. “I was really surprised,” Marcie Ware said about winning the contest. Enderle said more businesses participated in the contest this year compared to years past, but she is hoping to continue to grow the contest so that many of the businesses and residents participate. “We are hoping to increase participation,” she said. “Maybe match a garden club member with a participant. We do plan to grow it within the community.”

Rookie Success League. “This camp would have never been able to take place without this list of people,” Charley Frank, executive director of the Reds Community Fund, said before reading the names of all the sponsors. “You all have made history.” Matt Van Sant, president and CEO of the Clermont County Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber decided to become a sponsor because they knew the Reds Rookie Success League would make a lasting impact on the children.

“We know character education is going on here,” Van Sant said. “That is critical for our future workforce.” University of Cincinnati Clermont College was also a sponsor, and many members of the baseball and softball teams at the college helped volunteer during the camp.“It’s all about the kids coming out and having physical activity but also learning valuable lessons,” Dean Dr. Gregory Sojka said about the camp. “It takes an entire community to work on this project.”

SCHLICHENMEYER THE BOOKWORM SEZ

His existence was written in ink, but his mind went way beyond paper. None of the other characters in the fairy tale ever thought about life outside the pages, for instance, but Oliver did. What would it be like to escape page 43, or page 26? He always wondered as he sneak-peeked at the faces peering into the book. One of the faces – a repeat reader – really captured his imagination. She was older than most fairy tale fans, with silky hair and beautiful eyes. He wished there was a way to really know her… Delilah hated her life. She hated school, she hated that she was a klutz, and she hated the Popular Girls. Was it any surprise that books were her escape? This children’s fairy tale book, though, that was a surprise. Even Delilah herself couldn’t completely understand why she was obsessed with it and had to read it dozens of times. But then she spotted an illustration she’d never seen

There’s nothing “fair” about a fairy tale. It’s true: the princesses are always beautiful in fairy tales, and nobody ever has zits. They all live in castles, never in small apartments or houses with messy kitchens. And the fairy-tale prince is always smart and handsome, which is so unlike the dweeb in Algebra who kept asking you out this year. Fairy tales? Maybe they should be called UNfair-y tales. That’s what 15-year-old Delilah thought, too, until she stumbled upon a secret in an illustrated kid’s book. As you’ll see in the new novel by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer, Delilah needed to look “Between the Lines.” From the moment he was born, Oliver’s future was mapped out for him. He had little choice, in fact, because his mother was Queen and his father was King. It was inevitable, therefore, that Prince Oliver would someday rule the kingdom. The problem was that the kingdom ended on page sixty-something. Oliver’s life was predestined because he was a character in a book, end of story. His actions were part of the plot.

For ages, you’ve been borrowing your Mom’s Jodi Picoult books and she seems kind of tired of it. So maybe it’s payback time: get a copy of this book and wait. It won’t be long before she’ll be asking to borrow your novel for once. That’s because “Between the Lines” is cute and very clever, with delightful plot surprises and characters you’ll pull for. Author Jodi Picoult spins her typical magic here, in tandem with her daughter, Samantha Van Leer, to create a story that will appeal to anyone who ever wished that fairy tales were real, that characters might come to life, or that a prince was just a page away. Meant for teens ages 1217, this book is definitely going to be popular with a much wider audience hungry for Picoult. If that’s you, reading “Between the Lines” will make you feel happily ever after. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.

Once again, Independence Day is here, bringing fireworks and barbeques. Of course, the 4th of July is more than hoopla — it’s a time to reflect on the many freedoms we enjoy in this country. Yet, for many people, one important type of freedom — financial freedom — is still elusive. So you may want to use this holiday as an occasion to think of those steps you can take to eventually declare your own Financial Independence Day. Here are some moves that can help: • Create a strategy. Financial freedom doesn’t just happen — it takes planning, patience and perseverance. To work toward your financial independence, you’ll need to create a financial strategy, in conjunction with your financial advisor, and stick to that strategy. Over time, you’ll need to make adjustments, but if your overall strategy is appropriate for your goals, time horizon

and risk tolerance, it should help you get you to where you want to go. • Contribute as much as possible to your retirement plans. Each year, put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 457(b) if you work for a state or local government or a 403(b) if you work for a school or other tax-exempt organization. These plans offer the potential for taxdeferred earnings, so your retirement funds can grow faster than if they were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Also, if you’re eligible, try to “max out” on your IRA every year. • Maintain adequate life insurance. If you have a family, you aren’t just thinking of your own financial independence — you have to think of theirs, too. And that’s why you need to maintain adequate life insurance, particularly during the years when your

Market Survey of Nursing Home, Assisted Living, Adult Day Services, and Home Care Costs. And the national hourly rate for home health aides is $21, according to the same survey. Medicare typically pays very little of these costs, which puts the burden on you. Fortunately, some investment vehicles can help you deal with long-term care expenses. Consult with your financial advisor to determine which of these vehicles may be appropriate for your needs. A national holiday won’t be declared when you achieve your financial independence — but, for you, it will be a time well worth celebrating. So do what it takes to work toward the arrival of that happy day.

children are growing up. But even after they’ve left the home, you may find that life insurance can be valuable in providing retirement funds for your spouse, should anything happen to you. And if you have permanent life insurance, which contains an investment component, you can generally access the cash value, through policy loans or withdrawals, to help pay for your own retirement. • Protect yourself from long-term care costs. You may never need any type of long-term care, such as a stay in a nursing home or assistance from a home health aide, but if you do, the enormous costs can threaten your financial independence — and possibly even put an economic strain on your spouse or grown children. After all, the national average rate for a private room in a nursing home is more than $87,000 per year, according to the 2011 MetLife

"WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN EVENTS..." "Taxation without representation!" That was the battle cry of the 13 colonies in America that were forced to pay taxes to England's King George III with no representation in Parliament. As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell any signs of rebellion, and repeated attempts by the colonists to resolve the crisis without war proved fruitless. On June 11, 1776, the colonies' Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia formed a committee with the express purpose of drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the document. (Nevertheless, a total of 86 changes were made to his draft.) The Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4. The following day, copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed and, on July 6, "The Pennsylvania Evening Post" became

the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document. The Declaration of Independence has since become our nation's most cherished symbol of liberty. Bonfires and Illuminations On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia's Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks. The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks. Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of 1812 with Great Britain. On June 24, 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C., to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote. In it, Jefferson says of the document: "May it be to the world, what I believe it will be ... the signal of arousing men to burst the chains ... and to assume the blessings and security of selfgovernment. That form, which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. ... For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them." Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday, but with full pay for federal employees. Today, communities across the nation mark this major midsummer holiday with parades, firework displays, picnics and the playing of the "The StarSpangled Banner" and marches by John Philip Sousa. www.pbs.org

Did You Know?

• The Declaration of Independence was adopted by 12 of 13 colonies (New York not voting) on July 4, 1776, but wasn't actually signed by all the delegates until August 2, 1776. • John Hancock, the President of the Congress, was the first to sign the sheet of parchment measuring 24¼ by 29¾ inches. • A handprint appears on the bottom left corner of the Declaration of Independence. The origins and circumstances of the handprint are not known. The document was handled, rolled, and traveled about and exhibited extensively in its early life. • If you were a member of the Second Continental Congress in 1776, you were a rebel and considered a traitor by the King of England. You knew that a reward had been posted for the capture of certain prominent rebel leaders and signing your name to the Declaration meant that you pledged your life, your fortune, and your sacred honor to the cause of freedom. • Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and member of the Committee of Five died on July 4, 1826. And John Adams, also a committee member, died on the same day. http://www.archives.gov

Q. Is anything written on the back of the Declaration of Independence? A. Yes, there is writing on the back of the original, signed Declaration of Independence. But it is not invisible, nor does it include a map, as the Disney feature film, National Treasure, suggests. The writing on the back reads "Original Declaration of Independence, dated 4th July 1776," and it appears on the bottom of the document, upside down. To learn more, read the article, The Flip Side of History. Please note that the back of the Declaration of Independence is not on display in the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom. Q. Is the original Declaration of Independence written on paper? A. No, the original was engrossed on parchment which is an animal skin specially treated with lime and stretched to create a strong, long-lasting writing support. The printed version is on paper and was read aloud from town squares throughout the colonies, so that those who could not read would receive the news about intended separation from England. Q. Do other copies of the Declaration of Independence exist? A. Yes, there are 26 copies known to exist of what is commonly referred to as "the Dunlap broadside," 21 owned by American institutions, 2 by British institutions, and 3 by private owners. The Dunlap Broadside copies were printed on paper on the night of July 4,— and thus are contemporary with the original Declaration that is engrossed on parchment. Given the great interest in and popularity of the document to the American people, many facsimile copies of the Declaration have been made over the years. These copies have been printed in many sizes and formats as souvenirs and for the purpose of display in governmental and other offices and schoolrooms across the nation. Q. Was Thomas Jefferson the only person involved in writing the Declaration of Independence? A. Jefferson was the author of the document and was a member of the Committee of Five that was appointed to

draft a statement presenting to the world the colonies case for independence. The committee consisted of two New England men, John Adams of Massachusetts and Roger Sherman of Connecticut; two men from the Middle Colonies, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert R. Livingston of New York; and one southerner, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. Q. Has the Declaration of Independence always been at the National Archives in Washington, DC? A. No, after the signing ceremony on August 2, 1776, the Declaration was most likely filed in Philadelphia in the office of Charles Thomson, who served as the Secretary of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1789. The document probably accompanied the Continental Congress as the body traveled during the uncertain months and years of the Revolution. On December 13, 1952, the Declaration, along with the Constitution and Bill of Rights were formally delivered into the custody of Archivist of the United States Wayne Grover and enshrined at a ceremony on December 15, 1952, attended by President Harry S. Truman. For more information about the document's travels see Travels of the Declaration of Independence – A Time Line. Q. Is the encasement bullet-resistant? A. Yes, the case is constructed of ballistically resistant materials to include the glass. Q. Who constructed the new encasements and what are they made of? A. The new encasements, which look like large, deep picture frames, were designed to meet National Archives specifications that ensure the preservation of the Charters for future generations. The encasements were constructed by the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) of titanium and aluminum. The frames are gold plated to evoke the style of historic frames. Q. Are other documents also encased in this way? A. Yes, the Charters of Freedom – the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence – are all encased in this way.

Jones Building on the UC Clermont College campus. The roof of the Edith Peters-Jones Building will be replaced with the funds because of leaking that is causing damage to the ceilings, floors and walls.

“I’m pleased that the Controlling Board has released the funds for this project,” Representative Uecker said. “This building is an important part of the UC Clermont College campus, and it’s important that

the problem is addressed so that the leaks do not inhibit the students’ education.” The building was constructed in the 1970s, and the original roof can no longer be patched because of its age and condition.
