rides, souvenirs and other activities. The Kelly Miller Circus began in 1938 with Obert Miller and his sons, Kelly and Dory. The show travels from town to town with 25 vehicles and requires 90,000 square feet to set up, and traditionally the elephants help erect the circus tent. Animals and performers in the Kelly Miller circus come from all over the world. Whether it is the Poema family from Argentina, Raul Olivares Guerrero, the juggler from Guadalajara, Mexico or the exotic elephants, tigers and camels. “I liked the camels,” said
11-year-old Emma Gray at one of the Bethel shows. “Because it’s hard to imagine an animal can be so smart.” Emma’s mother, Beverly, who brought the family said she enjoyed the Kelly Miller Circus even more than bigger circuses. “I like that it is the oldtime feel,” Gray said about the Kelly Miller Circus. “I told the kids, ‘this is what the circus used to be.’ It seems more personal, you can actually make eye contact with the people in the show.” There are still has several shows in Ohio this spring. An person in a disguise is believed to have robbed two banks May 13. One was Key Bank on West Plane Street in Bethel and the other was U.S. Bank on Ludlow Avenue in Cincinnati. Mark Planck, chief of police for the village of Bethel said that around 10:26 a.m. May 13 a Bethel-Tate bus driver notice a subject walking down Union Street in Bethel. The subject walked past the bank before going in, which the bus driver thought was odd. The subject was wearing a black women’s business suite, a red wig, gym shoes and a scarf. He or she entered the bank and handed a teller a note instructing the teller to give him or her all of the $50 and $100 bills. As the teller did so, the subject told the See Robbery, Page 4
Fresh coat of paint intended to prevent vandalism Bethel Baptist Church, BAM Fest Committee paint retaining wall BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun Staff
It is one thing to vandalize a plain cement wall with graffiti, but it is another to desecrate an American flag. The concept is exactly what Bethel Baptist Church staff and volunteers were going for when they painted the cement retaining wall on State Route 125 – again. “We painted it last year, within a week it was covered again,” said Stewart Clarke, pastor at Bethel Baptist. Graffiti on the wall has been an ongoing problem in Bethel. Church members, elected offi-
cials and residents have noticed and disproved of the graffiti, and the topic has come up several times at council meetings. “No matter what they have (on the wall) it seems to get defaced,” said Donna Gunn, council member, at the May 9 meeting. Despite prosecution and multiple attempts to remove graffiti from the wall, the problem keeps re-occurring. Clarke said eventually a few citizens began putting their heads together to find a better way to tackle the issue. The result was painting the wall something other than a solid
color. “I think the American flag is something that everyone can appreciate,” Clarke said. “We were trying to come up with ways to deter graffiti and make it something we can all be proud of.” Clarke said it would take a low person to graffiti the wall with the American flag on it, because it is something we honor as a national symbol. He also said he personally sent letters to local schools to have teachers warn students of the repercussions of vandalizing a flag. “There is going to be more pressure from their peers and more shame,” Clarke said. “If they get caught they would always be known as the ones that painted over the American flag.”

Clarke said the goal was to have the wall re-painted by BAM Fest, which was May 7. BAM Fest organizers helped by donating gallons of paint and other supplies to use on the wall. Clarke and a few other organizers spent May 5 drawing out and painting an American flag on the wall. “We got so many compliments on it,” Clarke said about the finished product. “It is something everyone is so excited about. Now it looks nice, it’s not ugly graffiti.” Clarke also hopes no one will vandalize the wall again, but considered the idea when planning. “Certainly I would be sad,” Clarke said about the wall being de-faced again. “Not so much for the project for the individual, that they would

Tigers, camels, elephants, clowns and gymnasts made an appearance in Clermont County May 15 and 16, as part of the Kelly Miller Circus that had shows in Bethel and Batavia. “We love it,” said Vicki Hignite, who attended the May 15 show with her daughter and grandchildren. “It is very nice for Bethel.” Hignite said she decided to come to the circus to show her grandchildren, Miranda, Raven and Emmie a good time. And the circus did not disappoint, with many acts that kept the audience involved. “It’s great, I really loved the gymnasts, they were good,” said Terry Rowland of Kings Mills. “This will be our very first circus. I thought this would be a great start.” Rowland said she was visiting her parents and drove past the circus tent at Bethel Middle School. She decided to take her children, 5-yearold Kaylee and 6-week-old Lilly. Kaylee said her favorite part of the circus was seeing the horses and the elephants. There were two shows in both Bethel and Batavia. Both featured several acts including Casey McCoy’s tigers, Roxie Montana and her wild west dogs and pony, the Kelly Miller elephants, the Poema family gymnastic act, clown skits and more. There were also elephant

BY STEVE BOEHME Weeds are the biggest challenge for landscape gardeners. There’s no single magic solution to weed control in your landscape, but if you understand weeds you can defeat them using a simple system of controls. First you need to know some weed basics. There are three basic kinds of weeds; Annual, biennial and perennial. Annual weeds come up from seed each year and die before winter. Biennial weeds grow the first year and bear seed the second year, and then die. Perennial weeds survive the winter and continue growing stronger each year, spreading underground and also by seed. Complete darkness is the most effective weed control. That’s why many gardeners spread weed barrier fabric on gardens and cover it with mulch. Fabrics are more effective than mulch by itself, since they allow water and air to reach the soil but block sunlight. They will control all three types of weeds at first, but eventually new weeds will invade your beds above the fabric layer. The biggest mistake of most gardeners is neglecting to prepare the soil before putting down fabrics and mulch. Healthy, happy plants are your best defense against weeds, since they are aggressive competitors and they shade the ground. Most weeds don’t do well in shade. Fabrics hinder many plants from spreading and “colonizing”, which pushes out
weeds. Fabrics can also be a nuisance if you want to cultivate or change your beds. Any time you disturb the fabric or bring up soil on top of it you invite weeds. We recommend using Remuda or other glyphosatebased weed killer to kill all weeds and grass completely before making new beds. If you till biennial or perennial weeds they will multiply; you must kill them down to the deepest roots before tilling. Another important step is to cut away soil along sidewalks and bed edges, so two or three inches of mulch can be added right to the edge. Skimping on mulch allows sunlight to activate weed seeds in the soil. The final line of defense is “pre-emergent” weed control chemicals like Treflan, the active ingredient in Preen. Spreading these on top of the mulch creates a shield that kills emerging weed seedlings. Treflan won’t work if it’s buried under the mulch, however research has shown that mixing Treflan into the top quarter-inch of mulch makes it much more effective than just scattering it on top. That’s why a dry granular product like Preen doesn’t work nearly as well as a liquid spray. We have had great success with a weed control spray called “Weed Impede”, which is liquid Treflan concentrate in a hose-end sprayer. After putting down new mulch we drench it with Weed Impede spray, creating a very effective weed barrier as long as the mulch isn’t dis-

turbed. The ultimate pre-emergent weed control is Preen mulch. This is a more expensive method than spray but it’s easier and it works like a charm. We have brown and red mulch infused with Preen. It’s the “one-two punch” of weed control. Steve Boehme is the owner of GoodSeed Nursery & Landscape, located on Old

cil meetings. There have been several police reports filed for vandalism at the park in just in the last few month including damage to park picnic table and graffiti on walls.
“Nobody wants to look at graffiti,” Clarke said. “I think for us it was a matter of stopping the graffiti that just makes the whole town look bad.”
‘Munis’ can still work for you, even in tough times No matter where you live, the chances are good that a state or local government near you may be having some difficulty in balancing its budget. As a citizen, you’re probably concerned about how this situation will affect your life and your community. But as an investor, you may also wonder how this might affect any municipal bonds you own. Fortunately, the outlook might be brighter than you think. Of course, taken to the extreme, the financial challenges of some state and local governments could conceivably affect their ability to fulfill the payment obligations on their municipal bonds. But investment-grade quality municipal bond default rates historically have been very low, especially when compared to those of corporate bonds. And municipalities are cutting spending, eliminating nonessential programs and, in some cases, raising taxes or fees. In short, they are taking steps that, while potentially painful to residents, are likely to help them continue making timely payments of interest and principal on their municipal bond obligations. Furthermore, municipalities must still fund various proj-
ects, and even one bond payment default could impact their future ability to borrow money in the form of new municipal bonds. So are munis right for you? The answer depends on your situation — your goals, need for investment income, current investment mix, risk tolerance and so on. But if you want to receive interest payments that are exempt from federal taxes, you may well be interested in exploring municipal bonds. Keep in mind, though, that municipal bonds may be subject to state and local taxes and the alternative minimum tax (AMT). In addition, you’ll want to be familiar with “taxableequivalent yield.” Typically, municipal bonds pay an interest rate that’s lower than those paid by taxable bonds. Since this interest is free from federal taxes, however, the rate may not be as low as it appears. The taxable-equivalent yield measures the rate you’d have to earn on a taxable bond to match the income from a taxexempt municipal bond. And the higher your tax bracket, the higher your taxable-equivalent yield. Suppose that you’re in the 35% marginal tax bracket, and you are considering a tax-
exempt municipal bond with a 3.33% yield. You simply divide 3.33% (0.0333 in decimal form) by 1 minus 0.35 (your tax bracket), which would give you 0.0512, or 5.12%. In this tax bracket, a muni with a 3.33% yield is equivalent to a taxable bond with a 5.12% yield. (This example is for illustration purposes only.) Keep in mind that, before investing in bonds, you should understand the risks involved, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. Bond investments are subject to interest rate risk such that when interest rates rise, the prices of bonds can decrease, and you can lose principal value if the investment is sold prior to maturity. So it's best to discuss municipal bonds with your financial and tax advisors. By adding quality municipal bonds to your portfolio, you can show faith in your municipality, your investment dollars can help support worthwhile projects in your area, and you receive a steady source of tax-exempt income.

Planck said during the FBI investigation, FBI workers got word that the U.S. Bank was robbed in Cincinnati. Surveillance videos revealed the same subject that robbed Key Bank. “We’re not sure if it is a man or women yet,” Planck
said. “We are leaning more toward a female.” Police have not yet found the subject and Planck said they are all still looking. There is no description of the person who picked the robber up on Ball Alley.

Human medications are once again at the top of the list of pet toxins. Almost 25 percent of our calls concerned human medications accidentally ingested by pets. The most common culprits include over-the-counter medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen), antidepressants and ADHD medications. insecticides Insecticides are commonly used on our pets for flea control and around our houses to control crawling and flying bugs. The most serious poisonings occurred when products not labeled for use in cats

were applied to them. Always follow label directions. rodenticides Baits used to kill mice and rats are mostly grain based. Not only does this attract rodents, but it attracts dogs and cats. There are several different types of rodenticides that can cause seizures, internal bleeding or kidney failure.
Always make sure these items are placed in areas that pets cannot access. People Food Xylitol, grapes, raisins, onions and garlic are commonly ingested by our pets. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, while onions and garlic can cause anemia if enough is ingested. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol used to sweeten sugar free gums and mints, can cause low blood sugar and liver failure in dogs. Veterinary Medications Many medications made for our pets are flavored for ease
of giving. Unfortunately, that means that animals may ingest the entire bottle of medication if they find it tasty. Common chewable medications include arthritis and incontinence medications. Contact your veterinarian if your pet ingests more than his proper dose of medication. Chocolate Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which act as stimulants to our pets. The darker the chocolate, the more methylxanthines it contains. Methylxanthines can cause agitation, vomiting, diarrhea, high heart rate, muscle
tremors, seizures and death. Household Toxins Cleaning supplies, such as bleach, acids, alkalis and other detergents, can cause corrosive injury to the mouth and stomach. Other household items such as batteries and liquid potpourri can cause similar problems. Always keep these toxins behind securely locked doors. Plants Both house plants and outdoor plants can be ingested by our pets. Lilies can cause lifethreatening kidney failure in cats, while sago palms can cause liver failure in dogs and
cats. Keep house plants and bouquets away from your pets. Herbicides Many herbicides have a salty taste, and our pets will commonly ingest them. Always follow label directions and keep pets off treated areas until they are dry. Outdoor Toxins Antifreeze, fertilizers and ice melts are all substances that animals can find outdoors. Keep these items in securely locked sheds or on high shelves where pets cannot get to them. Spring Hazards for Pets Spring time is a time of year we all look forward to. Common activities at this time of year may include spring cleaning, planting, opening swimming pools, de-winterizing campers or cabins, Easter celebration, and cooking out. These activities can also lead to pets ingesting potentially toxic substances. Below is a list of the relative toxicity of various spring-time hazards to which a pet may be exposed. Low toxicity (may cause gastrointestinal upset, but unlikely to cause serious problems unless very large amounts are ingested): • N-P-K fertilizers (no added insecticide or herbicide; iron level < 1% • Herbicides containing glyphosate • Bone meal (no added insecticide or herbicide • Charcoal briquettes (unused, no added lighter fluids) Moderate toxicity (may cause significant signs beyond mild gastrointestinal upset): • Spring blooming bulbs • Chocolate High toxicity (potential for very serious or life-threatening signs): • Pool chemicals • Easter lilies in cats • Antifreeze • Disulfoton (disyston) – containing systemic insecticides
