Officers honored at police banquet Outstanding contributions recognized

Clermont County Citizens Law Enforcement Association along with Clermont Chamber of Commerce held the 28th annual police appreciation banquet May 19.

The banquet, held at Holiday Inn, Eastgate, featured a dinner and awards for police officers who went above and beyond their call of duty last year.

Patrolman Floyd Henderson of the New Richmond Police Department was named Officer of the Year, Small Department and Lt. Sue Madsen of the Union Township Police Department received the honor of being named Officer of the Year, Large Department.

“Officer Henderson is an informal leader,” said Chief Randy Harvey. “The person to whom lesser experienced officers gravitate.”

Lt. Madsen, whose serves as administrative lieutenant, led the Union Township Police Department to its sixth national accreditation award, and and has contributed to many meetings on the state, county and local level.

“At Union Township it isn't a challenge,” Lt. Madsen said about her accomplishments.

“I work with individuals who make it really easy.”

The Traffic Officer of the Year award went to Officer Michael Adamson of Loveland Police Department and Trooper Aaron McMillan for Small and Large Department, respectively.

Officer Adamson, issued 469 citations and made 80 arrests last year. From his experience as a traffic cop, he said the most important thing he would tell people to do

Officer McMillan made several instinctual decisions last year that ended up saving lives, including removing seven drunk drivers from the roads and stopping an out-ofcontrol SUV on the highway by slowing it with his patrol car.

Detective John Pavia was named criminal investigator of the year. Pavia investigated six separate felony sex offenses against children, which helped lead to the apprehension and conviction of six registered felons, now incarcerated.

Detective Pavia said the number one way to keep children safe from these types of crimes today is to monitor their Internet use, and under-

stand the dangers of computers.

The team helped apprehend Timothy Hoskins for killing his 2-year-old stepson, who he claimed fell down the stairs.

“Everyone just dropped everything and did what needed to be done. Anytime it is a child it's a top priority.”

Officer Michael Ventre received the medal of honor at the ceremony for reviving an unconscious person in cardiac arrest. Ventre was not dispatched to the scene but went anyway and arrived before the life squad.

Barbara McCane also voluntarily contributed to the livelihood of others when she helped convince a witness to give a statement. The witness knew key details regarding the robbery at the River City BP Express gas station and helped New Richmond police in their investigation.

McCane was awarded the cit-

izens award for her efforts.

“I only did it because I have four children at home, and it could have been me and my kids,” McCane said.

Other awards presented included retired officer recognitions for Officer Ralph Hodges and Sgt. Asa Burroughs both of Milford Police Department, certificates for award nominees and honorable mentions of officers deployed to the military.

A trend throughout the ceremony was the cooperation and trust between officers, departments and citizens in Clermont County.

“In my career I've never once picked up the phone and asked for help from any of those people and not gotten it,” said Officer Hodges.

Bomb threat at Union Township store Man arrested, no one injured in incident at CVS Pharmacy

Union Township police responded to the CVS Pharmacy at 947 CincinnatiBatavia Pike May 19, where a man who wanted to rob the store claimed he had an explosive device.

Lt. Scott Gaviglia said the suspect, later determined to be

Nicholas Pasco, entered the store around 1:30 p.m., claimed he had a bomb, and said he was going to rob the store. An employee called 911 and a Union Township officer in the area was able to respond.

Gaviglia said employees began to exit the store immediately, and when the officer arrived, a perimeter was estab-

lished and Pasco was trapped in the store. No employees or customers were in the store when Pasco was isolated.

Pasco “At that point we made contact with the suspect and began negotiations,” Gaviglia said.

Pasco was incarcerated after his surrender and charged with aggravated robbery, kidnapping and inducing panic. He was arraigned May 20 and will have his preliminary hearing at Clermont County Municipal Court May 26.

Clermont County's assistant administrator, Scot Lahrmer, will be retiring this summer.

“He submitted his resignation to the board that said he wanted to move on and explore new avenues in his career,” said David Lahrmer Spinney, administrator.

Lahrmer became assistant county administrator in October 2006. From 1989 to 2006 he served as the city manager of Mason, Ohio.

Inmate dies in county jail Investigation into death is underway STAFF REPORT Clermont County Jail inmate Jason Vdovick died May 21 after a scuffle at the jail.

According to police reports, at approximately 7:45 a.m.

May 21, Vdovick, 29, of Milford, who was serving a six-day sentence for D U I , became disruptive in Vdovick his cell. A jail supervisor tried to calm him and was unsuccessful.

An application of force was required to subdue Vdovick, and he became unresponsive.

Emergency medical personnel were called and transported Vdovick to Mercy Hospital

May is National Older Americans Month. In celebration, The Clermont Sun and Clermont Senior Services are highlighting accomplishments of several active Clermont County seniors who strongly believe that staying active keeps them mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. One said, “I may be retired, but I’m not ready for the rocking chair.”

Widow learns to crochet to support local charities

Volunteer keeps nose in books at local library

Pat Esswein, crocheting/knitting class instructor at Union Township Lifelong Learning Center, worked outside the home until her husband became disabled.

She then served as his primary caregiver for almost 17 years, devoting herself to attending to his needs.

Pat learned to knit and crochet after her husband passed away six years ago so she could make afghans and scarves for charity bazaars.

Besides overseeing the crochet/knitting class at the center, she also volunteers with Hospice for Hope, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and at Good Samaritan Hospital. She enjoys incorporating knitting and crocheting with volunteering. “I can be blue and still crochet because it doesn’t take a lot of thought.”

However, volunteering and pursuing hobbies as a senior can take some effort.

“Sometimes you have to push yourself, but it is worth it,” Pat says. “The more you do, the more you want to do.”

Milford area senior, Eb Ax, spends a lot of time during the week with his “nose in books”.

Eb, a volunteer at the Milford-Miami Township Branch Library, primarily is involved with the library’s used book fairs, but also takes on some former page tasks like rotating newspapers, cleaning computers, and maintaining the parking lot.

“Eb has been essential in setting up the procedures that make our book fairs run smoothly and he is tireless in his efforts. I know the staff considers him to be both a coworker and a friend,” said Emily Wichman, Milford Branch volunteer liaison.

“Seniors make up a large portion of library volunteers. Their desire to help goes beyond just “wanting something to do,” Media Relations Specialist Amy Prewitt said. “We truly feel they have an attachment to the library and a need to give back to an organization that they enjoyed in both childhood and adulthood.

They believe in the library and it shows in their commitment to volunteerism.”

Eb also is heavily involved with his AARP group and his church, St. Mark's Lutheran in Milford where he is a trustee and helps maintain the grounds and facility.

TRIO FINDS FULFILLMENT THROUGH FRIENDSHIP AND STAYING ACTIVE

Retirement opens doors to volunteer opportunities and fun hobbies Retiring in 2007 opened doors to a diverse choice of activities and volunteer opportunities for Judy Squire of Marathon. “It is amazing the activities and volunteer opportunities that are available, some of which are new for me in retirement,” Judy said.

Judy’s interests and volunteer commitments, past and present, range from land use and conservation, to serving on her township’s zoning commission, and presiding as president of the Clermont County Chapter of PERI, a group for retired local and state government employees. Throw in playing bridge, continuing her religious education, being involved in three exercise classes a week, attending several widows groups meeting, and belonging to three garden clubs that engage in various community service projects. Such as, the Williamsburg Garden Club where she is part of a fourmember team from the Williamsburg Garden Club that delivers meals-onwheels through Clermont Senior Services to homebound seniors.

Judy also teaches the Arthritis Foundation exercise class at the Bethel Lifelong Learning Center. She was first exposed to these exercises through the Clermont County Health Department.

For the past several years she participated in the exercise class at the Northern Brown County Senior Center.

“Kathy Angel, Bethel Center’s lifelong learning specialist, asked if I could lead an exercise class at her center. About that time the Arthritis Foundation offered its instructor training class. I became certified to teach their class and the rest is history,” Judy said.

Judy firmly believes that remaining physically, mentally and spiritually active promotes good health of mind, body, soul and, also is fun. “There is something out there for everyone!”

Milford residents, Sharon Wiesehan and Mary McCarroll, and Rosa Bee, of Newtonsville, discovered new friends and an active environment at the Miami Township Lifelong Learning Center, sponsored by Clermont Senior Services.

Both Sharon and Rosa attend Newtonsville Nazarene Church. Sharon teaches Sunday School, is on the church’s board, and assists in the pantry; Rosa plays the piano. Recently retired, Sharon participates in the Miami Township Center’s kitchen band and lends a hand wherever needed. While growing up, her dream was to one day become a teacher; however, she later found herself raising her brothers and sisters and never having the opportunity to pursue that dream.

“Working and volunteering with seniors and conducting a Sunday School class quench my thirst for teaching,” she said. Also, volunteering lets her do a lot of things she couldn’t do when she worked. Sharon includes quilting, sewing, ceramics, and crocheting, knitting, embroidering, and writing poetry on her list of interests.

Sharon coaxed Rosa into attending the center. “I pick her up for church, now I pick her up and take her to Miami Township,” Sharon said.

Rosa retired five years ago, but her health hindered her for awhile. She is a new volunteer at Miami Township and also takes ceramics classes from on-call activity leader and volunteer, Mary.

Mary keeps busy teaching ceramics, entertaining audiences as a member of the center’s kitchen band and with her puppets. She also volunteers at Eckankar, the spiritual center she attends and where she occasionally assists with children. “I recently held a baby in my arms.

You don’t know how much that meant to me. I had forgotten what that was like; it brought back memories.”

Besides puppetry, Mary also likes to paint. She will exhibit some of her work in a Connecticut gallery the first week of June. She says she has worked with art all her life and now has time to further develop herself artistically and receive self-fulfillment through it.

Like Mary, Rosa and Sharon also are determined to stay active. “I don’t want to give up. I don’t want to just sit at home in a rocker. I like to do things.” Rosa said.

“We retired, we didn’t die,” Sharon summed it up.

Public Address Announcer Clinics Princeton High School will be the site of a clinic for those who want to learn about public address announcing. The clinic will be from 9 a. m. - 12 p. m. where Tom Kinder, the announcer for the Cincinnati Bengals, will host the clinic.

The clinic is sponsored by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers (NASPAA), the professional association for sports public address announcers. It is for public address announcers of junior high school, middle school, senior high school, college, and youth football.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association is sponsoring two scholarships to the clinic and it will pay the registration fees of the first two adults to register who bring with them a high school student announcer.

The clinics will address the announcer’s role, announcing expectations, Do’s and Don’ts of announcing football, how to handle emergency situations, as well as scripting and working with a spotter.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in voice training and announcing exercises. A football official will review new rule changes, officials’ hand signals, and ways that officials and announcers can work better together.

OHSAA Explains Importance of High School Sports The following was published in an issue of the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) Magazine.

“The Interscholastic athletics programs are inherently educational. They provide valuable lessons for practical situations - teamwork, sportsmanship, citizenship, winning and losing, and hard work.

Coaches Associations make proposals The Board of Directors of the Ohio High School Athletic Association recently heard proposals from three coaches associations.

The Golf Coaches Association asked for the starting date for practice to annually be the first Monday of August and that regular season competition be permitted to begin four days after the start of practice.

The Tennis Coaches Association asked that the draw and seeding dates for the boys and girls sectional tournaments take place one week prior to the start of the respective sectionals.

The Volleyball Coaches Association made four proposals. That the annual starting date becomes the first Monday of August, that the Foundation Match be allowed any time from the first Monday of August through the last Saturday of the regular season, that the official state tournament ball should be a black/white/gray Molten ball with OHSAA, NFHS, and OHSVCA logos, and that the school name and/or mascot be permitted along the top and/or bottom of the net.

Zumba Classes Schedule Zumba, a Latin dance, is being taught at the Clough United Methodist Church, 20 10 Wolfangle Rd., Anderson Township, corner of Clough Pike and Wolfangle Road.

A Message From The Commissioner of the Ohio High School Athletic Association The following article was written by Daniel Ross, Ph.D., Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Commissioner in the Fall 2010 OHSAA Magazine.

“I vividly remember a conversation I had with a high school soccer coach from Northeast Ohio this past summer on the topic of nonschool teams. He made a statement that left a big imrpession on me and illustrates a significant obstacle that many high school coaches are forced to work around. “‘I spend the first month of every season trying to break the bad habits that my players get inito while playing club soccer,” the coach said.

“I knew exactly what he meant. So many of the things that are at the core of school sports do not exist in club., travel, AAU, or Junior Olympic sports. Things like a focus on academics, sportsmanship, community pride and ensuring that the coaches have completed an education rpogram.”The proliferation of non-interscholastic teams often creates a real dilemma for student-athletes, coaches and parents. It is something that our staff here at the OHSAA discusses on a regular basis because, in some cases, non-school teams threaten what interscholastic sports are all about.

“Do I consider all nonschool teams rogue? Of course not, and I don’t have any problems with youngsters wanting to improve their skills to the highest level possible, But far too many nonschool teams just focus on playing an incredibale amount of games and winning above all else.

“Many non-school coaches make unrealistic promises of a rosy future that often don’t pan out. They tell student-athletes and their parents that the only way they will get exposure to earn a college scholarship is to play for their ‘elite’ team. I not only find that very hard to believe, but when I hear about the costs and fees associated with non-school teams I don’t believe it’s very hard to see who is really ‘profiting’ from the exposure.

“In addition, non-school teams are a part of the unfortunate trend today that is seeing young people specialize in just one sport. Just as a wellbalanced diet is key to nutritutional health, playing several sports has proven to be more beneficial to a young person’s overall growth and development that just playing one sport, where the same motions day after day led to over-use of drtain muscles and injury.

“It is my sincere desire the the families and communities in Ohio will see the benefits of school sports above any other kind to youth sports.

The philosophy of educational athletics, which the OHSAA places above all else, is what will produce tomorrow’s good citizens and community leaders, not playing eight games in a weekend or hopping around the country from one ‘big’ tournament to the next.

“I invite the student-athletes, teachers, coaches, administrators and families

“Through participation, students learn self-discipline, personal sacrifice and leadership, build self-confidence, learn to respect others, develop strategic thinking, and develop skills to handle competitive situations. These are the qualities the public expects in students so that they become responsible adults and productive citizens.

Gardeners typically look for “flats” or multiple packs of small Phlox plants when they want to use it for groundcover. This is actually not the best way to get a healthy stand quickly. It’s much more effective to plant a single large plant, preferably a gallon pot full of roots.

The mature root system will encourage the plant to quickly spread up to three feet in a single season, with dense thick foliage that smothers and discourages weeds underneath.

You can further encourage spreading by trimming the plant back during the fall or winter months.

One of the first signs of spring is the colorful billows of creeping Phlox in light blue, white and all shades of pink, creeping along rock gardens and slopes.

Creeping Phlox is a hardy, dependable groundcover plant that is widely used to suppress weeds on hard-tomow slopes.

Creeping Phlox is an evergreen, making it ideal as a dense groundcover and for draping over walls and stones.

Phlox prefers moist, welldrained soils but it’s very adaptable and forgiving. You can create a healthy carpet of Phlox by simply working some Plant Tone and peat into the soil in your planting hole and then mulching heavily around the area.

Many people depend on certificates of deposit (CDs) to provide extra income. Yet CD rates have been fairly low for a while. In recent months, in fact, one-year CDs were paying about 0.5%, two-year CDs topped out at around 1%, and five-year CDs paid in the 2% to 2. 3% range. Those rates are scanty enough, but they can seem even lower in an economic environment marked by rising food and gas prices.

Before you consider alternatives, keep in mind that CDs still offer a key advantage: safety of principal. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) typically insures CDs up to $250,000.

And since CDs are relatively short-term in nature, you don’t have to worry about locking away that money for long periods of time. So there can be a place for CDs in the fixed-income portion of your portfolio.

However, during times such as these, you might consider looking at additional options, keeping in mind that, when seeking greater income, you’ll likely be taking on more risk. Let’s consider a few alternatives: • Fixed annuities — Many people buy fixed annuities to supplement their retirement income. But most annuities also allow you to take up to 10% of your account value each year without penalty.

Plus, the interest rate you receive on a fixed annuity may be more competitive than that currently paid by a CD. Keep in mind, though, that annuities are not backed

by FDIC insurance, and any guarantees are backed solely

by the paying ability of the insurance company.

Additionally, early or excessive withdrawals may be subject to penalties. If you believe a fixed annuity might be appropriate for your situation, speak with your financial advisor.

• Bond ladders — If appropriate for your situation, you can potentially gain extra income through a strategy known as a bond “ladder.” To build a ladder, you buy several bonds with varying maturities — short-, intermediateand long-term. Once you’ve constructed your ladder, you could gain some advantage in various interest rate environments. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds earning higher interest rates. And when market rates rise, you can reinvest your maturing short-term bonds at the higher rates. But if you need income in addition to your regular interest payments, you can get it from the maturing bonds. Unlike CDs, however, bonds are not covered

by FDIC insurance and are subject to credit risks. Bonds are also subject to interest rate risk: When interest rates rise, bond prices generally fall, and you may lose some or all of your principal if you sell your bond prior to maturity. But by holding your bonds until maturity, you can avoid loss of principal, assuming the issuer doesn’t default.

• Dividend-paying stocks — Some companies have paid — and increased — their stock dividends for many years now. If you don’t need the dividends to boost your

cash flow, you can reinvest them to help boost your ownership stake. However, companies can reduce or discontinue their dividends at any time, and since stock prices fluctuate, you risk losing some or all of your principal.

By exploring alternatives to short-term CDs, you may find other appropriate investments that may better position you to reach your financial goals — so look around to see what’s available in the financial marketplace.

A joint investigation of the incident is underway among the Clermont County Sheriff's Office, the Clermont County Coroner's Office and the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

An autopsy was performed at the Hamilton County Coroner's office May 22, and Clermont County Coroner Brian Treon said, so far, post mortem findings have revealed that there were no injuries that were considered to be life threatening.

Further toxicology tests will be performed, and the investigation of the circumstances

leading up to the death is still underway.

Lahrmer's background is in economic development, growth and management. He received his bachelor's degree from Ohio Northern University and his master's degree from the University of Akron, both were for public administration.

“I appreciated his support while he was assistant county administrator,” Spinney said.

“He has provided me the support in whatever I asked him to do.”

Spinney said Lahrmer will officially retire Aug. 1, but he is using accumulated vacation time and is no longer in the office.

Lahrmer's position has not been filled yet, but Spinney said they do intend to fill it.

“I am concerned that we are replacing one addiction for another,” said Clermont County Coroner Dr. Brian Treon, after reviewing a disturbing trend in accidental drug overdoses in the county.

“In 2000, we had four accidental drug overdose deaths; in 2010, that number skyrocketed to 46. This year, we are on track to see more of the same.”

Dr. Treon said that the number one cause of accidental drug deaths is linked to abuse of methadone.

“This is typically a drug that is prescribed to help people who have been addicted to heroin, Vicodin, or Percocet.

Instead, many otherwise healthy individuals are dying.

Are we legitimizing addiction?”

Dr. Treon said other counties across the state are also noting an increasing number of deaths from accidental drug overdoses.

“I recently attended the Ohio State Coroners Convention and there was a lot of discussion about abuse

of prescription medications leading to death,” he said.

“Any unexpected death is devastating, but this tragedy is claiming the lives of young people; this is something that is completely preventable.”

Dr. Treon said that the victims are typically white males, around the age of 37.

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, taken orally once a day, methadone suppresses narcotic withdrawal for between 24 and 36 hours.

Because methadone is

effective in eliminating withdrawal symptoms, it is used in detoxifying opiate addicts.

It is, however, only effective in cases of addiction to heroin, morphine, and other opioid drugs, and it is not an effective treatment for other drugs of abuse.

Methadone reduces the cravings associated with heroin use and blocks the high from heroin, but it does not provide the euphoric rush.

Ultimately, the patient remains physically dependent on the opioid, but is freed

from the uncontrolled, compulsive, and disruptive behavior seen in heroin addicts.

“Unfortunately, methadone addicts, in many cases, take more and more of the drug to get the same high they earlier experienced. Sadly, many individuals overdose and end up in respiratory depression.

Essentially, they stop breathing,” said Dr. Treon. He encouraged families to intervene if they see a loved one that is not responding to drug treatment with methadone.

“Be aware. Be informed,”

he added. “If you think there is something wrong, there probably is and your loved one needs immediate help. I don’t want to meet any more families under these tragic circumstances.”

How would Clermont County respond to an earthquake that rattles the New Madrid seismic zone? On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, more than 40 representatives from emergency response agencies across the county gathered at the Clermont County Emergency Operations Center in Batavia, to take part in a day-long earthquake exercise called Shaken Horizon ’11.

This exercise was also played out in Hamilton, Butler, Warren, and Scioto counties, with coordination from the state Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

The exercise focused on local and regional recovery, in the aftermath of two earthquakes registering 7.7 and 5.7 on the Richter scale, with aftershocks causing further problems.

“The type of partnerships we have forged with this type of drill can be help the community deal with any type of hazardous situation,” said Clermont EMA Director Beth Nevel.
