Awards were given in three different categories and broken down by smaller business with less than 50 employees and businesses with more than 50 employees. “It's the business that makes Ohio go,” State Representative Danny Bubp said before award winners were announced. “We would like to congratulate you and thank you for being a role model in your community.” Several state and county officials as well as Matthew Van Sant, president and CEO of the chamber, John Melvin, director of the Small Business Development Center and former award winners helped give the awards to this years re-
cipients. Global Scrap Management, an aluminum recycling company located in Milford, with their new division, Altimet, now in Batavia Township, took home the Emerging Small Business Award for a business with less than 50 employees. Randy Perry, the recently-appointed Batavia Township Trustee, was sworn in at the Feb. 7 trustee meeting. “It's an honor just to serve the township and be on the board of trustees with Jim and Bill,” Perry said after he was appointed. Perry was appointed Jan. 18 to fill the seat of trusteeelect Jim Bushman, who was killed in a car accident in November before taking office. The trustees went through the process required by the Ohio Revised Code to appoint a resident to fill the position. They received letters of interest from seven resi-
dents in the township who wished to be on the board including Perry, Suellen Brafford, Charles Tekulve, Laura Abrams, Jason Fraley, Dan Haglage and Charles “Eddie” Miller. Trustees Jim Sauls and Bill Dowdney selected Perry because of his business experience, involvement in the community, hard working personality and more. “I think we made a good choice,” Dowdney said after they announced their appointment Jan. 18. Perry has lived in the township for 20 years. He is a self-employed contractor in the plumbing industry and he his wife, Lisa, own and operate Rising Star Sta-

He also said it was an honor to be recognized by commissioners at their session. “It is wonderful just that people actually care like that,” DeCamp said. “I re-
ally appreciate what they do.” Lance Cpl. Kyle Shouse, a Goshen High School graduate, was also thankful for the support during his six-and-a-half month deployment to Afghanistan. “The support is phenomenal,” Shouse said. “It is great to see people here are supporting you because there are a lot who aren't .” He said everyone overseas appreciated even

Two servicemen returned to Clermont County after Christmas, and both were honored in February by the Board of County Commissioners for their service to the country. Pfc. Anthony DeCamp of the United States Army was honored at commissioners' Feb. 6 session and Lance Cpl. Kyle Shouse of the United States Marine Corps was honored at the Feb. 13 session. DeCamp, who is a graduate of Glen Este High School, returned from his yearlong deployment to Afghanistan Dec. 28. DeCamp was part of an infantry division and said his first deployment was eye-opening. “When you get deployed it gets serious real quick,” DeCamp said. “It just matures you really quickly.” He said even if a soldier thinks he is ready for the conditions of Afghanistan, they can never be really know what things will be like until they arrive. DeCamp said one thing that was constant during his deployment was the support he received from home. “My parents were very supportive, friends were very supportive and Bob Proud was there for me 100

When it comes to overall health, Ohio ranks toward the bottom of the pack. That’s according to the 22nd annual America’s Health Rankings from United Health Foundation. The report, the longest running of its kind in the country, placed Ohio 36th among all 50 states for overall health, down three spots from last year. Here’s a snapshot of how Ohio fared in this year’s report: Ohio’s Strengths • High immunization coverage • Low occupational fatalities rate • Moderate rate of high school graduation Ohio’s Challenges • High prevalence of smoking • High levels of air pollution • Low per capita public health funding Ohio residents are getting some things right. While we should take a moment to congratulate ourselves for these successes, we can’t take continued progress for granted. Significant challenges remain. When United Health Foundation first began ranking American’s health in 1990, smoking represented one such challenge. Nearly one in three Ohioans, or 32.2 percent, smoked regularly. Education brought greater understanding of the risks associated with lighting up but more work needs to be done given that 22.5 per-

cent of Ohioans self-report as smokers. We must turn more attitudes against smoking, and in the process, help people improve their health and wellbeing while saving millions of dollars in health care costs. Furthermore, too many Ohio residents are overweight or obese – and the trend is getting worse. Approximately 29.7 percent of Ohio residents are above what is considered by health experts to be a normal weight, compared with 11.3 percent when the rankings began. Looking at our neighbors in the region, we see a similar picture: Indiana ranked No. 36 this year, Michigan came in at 30, and Kentucky landed at 43.

year, you’d end up with about $325,000 after 40 years, assuming you were in the 25 percent federal tax bracket. If you put that same $200 per month into a tax-deferred investment that earned the same hypothetical 7 percent a year, you’d accumulate about $515,000 — or nearly $200,000 more than you’d have with the taxable investment.* Of course, you will eventually have to pay taxes on the tax-deferred investment, but by the time you’re retired, you might be in a lower tax bracket. Furthermore, depending on how much you choose to withdraw each year from your tax-deferred account, you can have some control over the amount of taxes you’ll pay. Clearly, tax deferral can be a smart choice, but what sort of tax-deferred vehicles are available? One of your most attractive choices will be your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). Your earnings have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis, and since you typically fund your plan with pre-tax dollars, the more you put in, the lower your annual taxable income. If you’re lucky, your employer will even match some of your contributions.

Consequently, it’s almost always a good idea to put in as much as you can afford into your 401(k), up to the contribution limits, and to boost your contributions every time your salary increases. In 2012, you can contribute up to $17,000 to your 401(k), plus an additional $5,500 if you’re 50 or older. Even if you participate in a 401(k) plan, you can probably also contribute to a traditional IRA. Your earnings have the potential to grow tax-deferred and your contributions may be tax deductible, depending on your income level. In 2012, you can put in up to $5,000 to a traditional IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. (If you meet certain income guidelines, you might be eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free earnings, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2 and you’ve had your account at least five years.) Finally, if you’ve “maxed out” on both your 401(k) and your IRA, you may want to consider a fixed annuity. Your earnings grow tax-deferred, contribution limits are high, and you can structure your annuity to provide you with an income stream you can’t outlive. The more years in which you invest in tax-deferred vehicles, the better. So start putting the power of tax deferral to work soon.

As an investor, you may sometimes feel frustrated. After all, your portfolio seems to be at the mercy of the financial markets, whose volatility is beyond anyone’s control. Yet you can control the quality of the investments you own and the diversification of those investments to improve your chances of attaining your long-term financial goals. One way in which to do so is to put as much as you can afford, year after year, into tax-deferred investments. When you contribute to a tax-deferred account, your money has the potential to grow faster than it would if you placed it in a fully taxable investment — that is, an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Over time, this accelerated growth can add up to a big difference in your accumulated savings. For example, if you put $200 each month into a taxable investment that earned a hypothetical 7 percent a

Are you a homeowner who is dissatisfied with your landscaping? Perhaps you’ve been living with the shrubs your builder installed “way back when,” or landscaping done by the previous owner. You’d like your home to look nice, but for someone without a landscape design background it can be hard to know where to start. Calling in a professional could be costly, and you’re not sure what to ask for or how to tell good design work from bad. Landscaping has dollar consequences. It can affect the value of your home, and can have an impact on your maintenance costs. Well done, it can increase your property value and save you energy cost. Or, it can create a maintenance nightmare. How can you get started without making a huge commitment up front? We’re offering a “crash course” in low-maintenance landscape design, installation and maintenance starting March 7 at Southern States Community College (Central Campus in Hillsboro, Ohio). In a few evenings we can share with you a lifetime of practical experience. Do-it-yourselfers can learn how to expand your living space, install like a professional and maintain your landscape the easy way, by “teaming up with nature.” Non-gardeners will come away with enough knowledge to shop for and compare landscape services intelligently.

It was hardly worth picking up. Yep, there was once a time when that penny you spotted on the pavement was worth something more than just one cent. You could buy lots of things for a penny back then, and saving them was rewarding on many levels. Now they’re tossed and forgotten in desk drawers and fountains, or lost beneath cushions. You almost can’t give pennies away these days, and you probably won’t bother picking one up off the pavement. But what will happen if critics get their wish and pennies are eliminated? Or paper dollars, or $100 bills? Find out in the new book “The End of Money” by David Wolman. For most of human history, people lived quite nicely without money. We traded and bartered, which worked fine until it became necessary to keep track of inequalities in resources and trading. Specified objects were the first markers of wealth and commerce, with the invention of coins not far behind. And ever since, our attitudes toward money have been mixed. You’ve heard, for example, that money is the root of all evil but to some, credit cards are the Devil’s vehicle to the End Times. Others hate that “filthy lucre” can be taken literally, and that cash and coins “harbor all kinds of bugs.” And because money doesn’t grow on trees, still others point to the huge resources required to make coins and bills, only some of which is sustainable. Still, though it costs money to make money, the government keeps on producing it (for a tidy profit) and we keep on using it, knowing that it’ll always be around. The words “In God
“The End of Money” by David Wolman; c.2012, Da Capo $25.00 / $28.00 Canada; 228 pages, includes index
We Trust” are nice, in fact, but the reason money works is because we trust the government to uphold its value. Still, much like every transaction, we get change. If it seems like you rarely see $100 bills, it’s because most of them go overseas for drug deals and crime. If it seems like our paper cash is constantly changing, it’s to stay one half-step ahead of counterfeiters. And if it seems like there’s got to be a better, more efficient way than our paper-and-metal method, there is… and it might be as close as your pocket. If you look after your pennies, they say, your dollars will take care of themselves. But “The End of Money” looks at both, and what you’ll learn is surprising. With thoughts worth way more than a penny, author David Wolman tried for several months not to touch
cash, partly as an experiment for this book and partly because of money’s germiness. He traveled during this time, to countries with jaw-dropping inflation, places where cash is not king, villages in which poor people learn how to collect wealth, and locales where counterfeiters hope you’ll repeatedly part with foolish money. Whether you’ve got greenbacks or gravy, pennies, pounds, or plastic in your pocket, I think you’ll find “The End of Money” extremely interesting. Money might not buy happiness, but reading this book is the next best thing. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.
