Residents begin picking up the pieces after storm Help from state and county continues to grow STAFF REPORT Residents in southern Clermont County are beginning to pick up the pieces after severe storms destroyed homes and caused extensive damages March 2. Russell Durbin, who lives in Tate Township, is one of many who is now cleaning up the remains of his home after it was destroyed by the storm. Russell and his wife, Mary, were not at home during the storm, but returned to find the buildings on their property in pieces and debris scattered everywhere. “This is just material stuff, things,” Russell Durbin, said about the pile of rubble. “We are lucky we don’t have a funeral to go to.” Durbin said now they just have to work to clean up the debris, which still covers much of their property. “So many people have shown up and helped,” Durbin said. “People are just coming out of the woodwork. It is such a blessing.”

And while many residents, like Durbin, will be forced to rebuild their homes, they will not be on their own, as state, county and community assistance is becoming available. Governor John Kasich announced March 7 that a state-funded disaster relief program has been activated to assist Clermont County families impacted by the tornado and strong storms. The program will make $240,000 available to low income citizens and families of elderly or disabled residents, to assist them with repairs and other necessities they may have lost in the storm. According to the Clermont County Department of Job and Family Services, eligible families with children that earn up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level, could receive up to $1,500 in funds. A payment of $750 may also be available for elderly or disabled individuals meeting the income restrictions. For more information about the state-funded program, and eligibility, con-

Marine: Home from tour overseas Continued from page 1 weapons classes. He said being deployed was a lifechanging experience. Kozloski returned to the United States in February and said coming home almost felt weird because he had been gone so long. “Going home, it almost felt like you weren’t going to get there,” he said. “Seeing your family is just overwhelming. Clermont County Commissioners presented Kozloski with a certificate of appreciation and he was

also presented with a congressional proclamation from Congresswoman Jean Schmidt’s office, a certificate from The Thank You Foundation and challenge coins from Sheriff Tim Rodenberg and Danny Bare, executive director of Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission. “I had no idea that many people back here are that supportive, taking time out of their day to recognize and support us.” Kozloski said about being honored at the session. Kozloski said it is a great

feeling to have support back home, especially on a long deployment. “That’s what I tell my buddies back home,” Kozloski said about the support he receives. “Clermont County loves the military and they make sure you know it too.” Kozloski will soon be headed back to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina where he will continue to train. He said he expects he will leave on a second deployment in a year or so.

Speakers: Children’s services Continued from page 1 about what she took away from the event. “And understanding we need to be open to working together.” Both Eppler and McGee Brown spoke about what it takes to not only be a leader, but also work to accomplish similar goals as separate organizations and individuals. McGee Brown spoke about her own struggles in life including the decisions she has made as a judge to help children who come from struggling families. “You cannot do this work unless you invest yourself in it,” McGee Brown said about the field. McGee Brown discussed some of the children she came in contact with in the courtroom, and what she learned from them. She said for most children, they just want to just feel like a regular kid. She said that includes having a more stable situation as a foster child and eliminating some of the barriers that keep them singled out from other children. “The justice system may never give these children what they need, but we have to make sure they can move forward,” McGee Brown said about what can be done to help. In addition, she said letting children know that they have potential is important. She said if it weren’t for specific people in her life she would not have even gone to law school, let alone become a judge. “It’s the one-on-one things we do that touch their lives,” she said. “Understand that these are real, flesh and blood people.” McGee Brown also spoke about her work to help create the Center for Child and Family Advocacy at National Children’s Hospital, a one-stop shop for children who have suffered Visit

The Clermont Sun

from abuse or domestic violence. She said the center allows for therapists, counselors, nurses, and specialists to be located in one spot, so when it is time to present a case in court, everyone is already working together and is on the same page. McGee Brown commended Clermont County for its children’s services and said it is important to continue to work together and communicate about children and what can be done to assist them in the judicial system. Eppler, a speaker and writer with experience in management and leadership, also spoke at the event and highlighted keys to leadership that can help organizations and individuals succeed, even in difficult times.

He explained how to manage confusion, how to adopt an innovative mindset, how to think more productively and more. “I think the point that drilled home to me is one person can make a difference in someone’s life,” Gretchen Behimer, project director of FAST TRAC, said after hearing the speakers. “This was a pick-me-up almost.” Tim Dick, deputy director of Clermont County Children’s Protective Services, said the event was designed to bring those involved with children’s services together and motivate them to keep moving forward. “This was really to get us to the next level,” Dick said. “What we have to do is sustain the system.”

One in three pets will become lost at some point in their lives. Without identification, 90 percent will never return home. Positive identification is the only way to ensure that you are reunited with your pet if it becomes lost or stolen. A secure collar with tags indicating the home address and phone numbers is a good start. The problem is that collars come off. A thief would simply remove one, and cat collars are designed to break away in case the collar gets hung on a fence or tree limb. Fortunately, there has been technology developed that addresses this concern. A tiny chip contained in surgical-grade glass can be implanted beneath the skin and scanned at any time to provide a unique identification number. Veterinarians, shelters, and animal control departments have the hand held scanners to check lost pets for a chip. The microchip is not powered and never wears out. It is about the size of a large grain of rice and contains electronics that contain a unique identification code. No personal information is held on the chip, and they cannot be reprogrammed. The code on the chip is registered with the manufacturer’s recovery database along with the pet owner’s emergency contact information. They cannot be located on a GPS or other tracking device. The scanner activates the chip when it is held in close proximity to the pet. There is no problem with taking a microchipped pet on an airplane, and some countries even require a microchip as part of the disease quarantine process. Implanting the chip can be performed without anesthesia. The procedure is relatively painless. A modified syringe and large bore needle are used to place the glass tube beneath the skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Scar tissue forms around small barbs on the microchip to keep it from migrating out of place. Some pet owners will opt to have this procedure done at the time of spaying and neutering. There are several brands of identification chips that are FDA approved for im-

DR. DAN MEAKIN ALL CREATURES ANIMAL HOSPITAL

plantation in dogs and cats. Some brands can be read by other company’s scanners, and some cannot. Pet owner’s should consult their veterinarian about which brand of microchip is most universally readable in their

area. Microchipping is the most effective method of positively identifying your pet. Each year, thousands of dogs and cats are reunited with their owners thanks to this technology.

Springtime is almost here. If you’re like many people, the arrival of spring means it’s time to spruce up your home. But why stop there? This year, consider applying some of those same springcleaning techniques to your investment portfolio. Here are some ideas you may want to put to work: • Get rid of clutter. You probably don’t have to look too far around your home to find things that are broken or simply no longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio, you might make similar discoveries: an investment that has chronically underperformed, duplicates another investment or met your needs in the past but is less relevant to your current situation and goals. Once you identify these types of investments, you may decide to sell them and use the proceeds to take advantage of opportunities that may prove more valuable to you. • Consolidate. Over the years, you may have accumulated multiple versions of common household items — brooms, mops, hammers — which pop up mysteriously in various parts of your home. You might find it more efficient, and even less expensive, if you consolidated all these things in one centralized location. As an investor, you also might find that consolida-

tion can offer you some benefits. Do you have one Individual Retirement Account (IRA) with one financial services provider and a second IRA with another? Do you have a couple of old 401(k) accounts with former employers? And have you scattered investments here, there and everywhere? By consolidating all these accounts in one place, you can cut down on paperwork, reduce fees and, most importantly, unite your investment dollars so that it’s easier for you to see what you have and then follow a single, coherent investment strategy. • Prepare for turbulent weather. As you know, springtime can bring heavy rains, hail, strong winds and other threats to your home. As part of your overall spring cleaning, you may want to check the condition of your roof, clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters and downspouts, and take other steps to protect your property from the ravages of Mother Nature. And just as you need to safeguard your home, you’ll want to protect the lifestyles of those who live in that home — namely, your family. You can help accomplish this by reviewing your life and disability insurance to make sure it’s still sufficient for your needs. • Get professional help.

You may find that you can’t do all your spring cleaning by yourself. For example, if your carpets and rugs are heavily soiled, you may need to call in a professional cleaner. Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might need to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to “tidy up” your portfolio, you’ll need some assistance from a financial professional — someone who can study your current mix of investments and recommend changes, as needed, to help ensure your holdings are suitable for your risk tolerance, time horizon and short- and long-term goals. Spring cleaning can reinvigorate your home and your overall outlook. And by tidying up your investment portfolio, you can help gain some of that same optimism — for your future. She attended the CollegeConservatory of Music and continues to serve the children of New Richmond as a teacher at New Richmond Elementary School. “Judy has doing music since the early 1960s and has been a loyal and wonderful member of the New Richmond music community,” said Heflin. 2004-2005 Troubadours After a successful performance in Ohio Music Education Association competition, the 2004-2005 Troubadours were chosen to perform on the state at Carnegie Hall in New York City where they performed the entire Schubert Mass in g minor (a 67-page work) and performed along with college choirs and the New England Symphony Orchestra. “This once in a lifetime trip required an enormous fund raising effort to meet a budget of more than $250,000 for a traveling group of 150 people,” said Heflin. “This rates as one of the finest Troubadour groups from a long line of great ensembles.”

Got a diploma? It’s never too late to get your high school diploma. “We’ve helped people in their 70’s pass the General Educational Development (GED) test,” said Jimmi McIntosh, director of adult education with the Clermont Educational Service Center. Located at Workforce One in Union Township, McIntosh and her staff help 300 people go through the program each year. “Getting a high school diploma is critical in today’s society, especially when it comes to finding a good job,” she said. On a busy weekday afternoon, McIntosh talked about how lives change after people take the free classes that improve skills in reading, language arts, math, and much more. “When people come to us, we give them a full assessment. We measure their strengths and weaknesses, and then get them the help they need to succeed,” she said. “People drop out of school for all kinds of reasons, like having a baby, or they had to support their family. We offer a way for them to finish where they left off; we even have a graduation ceremony in June!” As she motions to a nearby classroom packed with students of all ages, McIntosh said that it can take weeks, months, and sometimes even years to hone individual skills to pass the high school equivalency test. For more information about adult education services offered at Workforce One of Clermont County (located at 756 old SR74 in Union Township), call (513) 735-8300 or visit the website www.WorkforceOneClermont.com.

little, then he pulls us back into wholeheartedly agreeing with Suelo, almost to the point of wanting to live in a cave, too. Notice I said “almost.” Sundeen is stingy with romanticism and freely relates hardships while he also examines the morals behind money and why most of us chase it. I think that if you’ve ever seriously considered your cash and wondered if you could really live without it, here’s your chance to reflect. For you, “The Man Who Quit Money” is a book to take to the sofa.

In 2000, after a stay in the Canada wilderness, he left his last $30 in a phone booth and moved to Moab. There, Sundeen says, Suelo lives with few possessions in whatever shelter he can find. He dines from a Dumpster, volunteers, and enjoys an active social life. There, he lives “abundantly” with zero money. Could I do it? That’s the question you’ll ask yourself over and over as you’re reading “The Man Who Quit Money.” It’s a tantalizing thought, this chuck-it-all life, and author Mark Sundeen lets his readers ponder it as he tells the life story of his friend, Daniel Suelo. But this isn’t just your run-of-the-mill biography. Sundeen lends his readers a good sense of who Suelo really is, while still preserving the enigmatic aspects. He lets us scoff a

Just about fifteen cents. That’s all you ever find between the sofa cushions. It’s never a huge amount of money but for some silly reason, it makes you inordinately happy. Same thing when you find a fiver stashed in last winter’s jacket, or a couple Washingtons in an old forgotten purse or wallet. It’s as if you just won the micro-lottery. You feel strangely rich. Now imagine never finding money. Imagine never wanting it at all. In the new book “The Man Who Quit Money,” by Mark Sundeen, you’ll read about the author’s friend, who’s penniless on purpose. Back in the days before Mark Sundeen had a mortgage and a successful writing career, back when most of his possessions fit in the bed of a pickup, Sundeen lived a carefree life as an itinerant river guide, sleeping in his truck and eking out a living in Moab, Utah. He wasn’t alone in that unbothered existence. Many people, discouraged by government actions or corporate greed, left the grid to live in Moab . One of them was Sundeen’s friend, Daniel Suelo. Born into an ultra-conservative fundamentalist family, Daniel Suelo was a sensitive child who took his faith extremely seriously. Still, during college, he reexamined his beliefs and began to hypothesize about certain aspects of God. After a stint with the Peace Corps, he started questioning the validity of organized religion. He’d noticed the wide chasm between The Haves and The HaveNots and how money seemed to change everything, which seemed unchristian-like and wrong. Further muddling his deeply introspective thoughts on religion, Suelo realized he was gay. Finding a community where eccentricity was barely noticed and tolerance is expected was, therefore, a godsend for Suelo.
