Two servicemen honored by commissioners Spc. Jones coming home, Sgt. Cline is deploying BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
Spc. Casey Jones of the United States Army and Sgt. Michael Cline of the United States Army Reserves were honored for their service and dedication to the country at Clermont County Commissioners’ June 4 session. The two men were honored by Commissioners Bob Proud and David Uible, who presented them with a certificate of appreciation from the board as well as a certificate from The Thank You Foundation. Steve Caraway, on behalf of Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, and Sheriff Tim Rodenberg also honored the servicemen during the cere-
mony. “Thank you so much for your service,” Sheriff Rodenberg said. “We greatly appreciate it.” Spc. Casey Jones, a Glen Este High School graduate, returned from a 12-month tour in Afghanistan in May. “It feels good to be home and have everyone’s support,” Jones said during the ceremony. He said it was great to get home and see his family, especially because he spent about 10 months in the country without a break. Jones said he joined the U.S. Army for better opportunities and said the experience has been what he expected. He said while he was in Afghanistan he received support from back home in the form of packages with snacks, fans, water and more that helped him get through the deployment. Jones said being recognized before he heads back Servicemen, Page 9

Bayberry Crossing to expand in Batavia Twp Zoning modification for second phase approved BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff
Batavia Township trustees approved a zoning modification for the second phase of the Bayberry Crossing Apartment complex located on Montgomery Way off state Route 125 in Batavia Township
June 5. The approval came after the Batavia Township Zoning Commission held a public hearing regarding the zoning modifications on May 10, and made recommendations to the board. Bayberry Crossing is owned by Grammas Development, and the zoning
case detailed plans for the second phase of the apartment complex, which will be called Sparta Village. Zoning consultant Jonathan Wocher presented the zoning case to trustees and highlighted the details of the plan and the changes made by the developer. Paul Grammas was present at trustees' June 5 meeting to answer any questions about planned modifications to the second phase of the development.
“The township approved preliminary plans in 2007,” Wocher said.“The new plan includes less apartments and no garages.” Wocher said the new plan includes 48 apartment units in 10 buildings instead of 56 units in eight buildings. The new plan also eliminated garage units from Sparta Village. Wocher said the units will be one or two bedroom apartments 672-728 square feet and will be a combina-
tion of brick and stone with a shingle roof. In addition, Wocher said the new plan also adds an entrance to the complex, in the form of a driveway, off Laub Road in addition to the entrance off Montgomery Way. Wocher said members of the zoning commission as well as residents raised several concerns regarding the second phase of the development. Wocher said the main
concern from neighboring residents was drainage and water run-off on the property with the additional units. He said they have addressed the issue by planning for an additional yard storm drain and pipe in the northwest portion of the site. “The landscape plan was modified,” Wocher said. “The plan no longer suggests mounding.”

Balloons in memory of Williamsburg girl make long journey Family learns that the balloons were found in Canada BY KRISTIN BEDNARSKI Sun staff

Pierre Morin found balloons near a camp on Lac Pentecote in Quebec, Canada that were released in Clermont County in memory of Isabella Marie McCoy. The balloons traveled more than 1,000 miles in four months.

When Lori Edmister, along with her family, set free several balloons in memory of her daughter Isabella Marie on the anniversary of her death December 26, 2011, she never could have imagined the journey the balloons would take. Edmister, along with her husband Ray McCroy and children Ray III, Xavier and Carly, set the balloons off on one year after Isabella Marie passed away. Isabella, who was 2-yearsold, died from brain cancer in December of 2010. “We wrote stuff on the pictures,” Edmister said. “These balloons are in honor of our daughter, if you find this please contact us.”
Edmister said they let the balloons go in a field near Eastgate in Clermont County. While the family went on with their lives, the balloons traveled more than 1,000 miles in four months. They came to rest on a frozen lake, Lac Pentecote, in Quebec, Canada. Edmister said she received a phone call from Fernand Hachey on April 15 or 16 this year, and he said his two non-english speaking friends, Pierre Morin and Denis Cossette, had found the balloons near a fishing camp on the frozen lake while they were traveling across it April 14. Hachey said the two men caught a glimpse of the reflective balloons and stopped to see what they were. They found the deflated balloons, note and
picture of Isabella still intact. They brought the note and balloons to Hachey because they couldn't speak English, and Hachey made the call to Edmister. “I was dumbfounded,” Edmister said about receiving the call. “I thought, this is a joke this stuff doesn't happen.” Not long after, Hachey sent Edmister a package that contained photos of where the balloons were found, as well as an aerial view of the lake. He told Edmister that the balloons would likely have been lost in the trees if they had floated a little further. On one of the photos, Hachey wrote that Isabella found a beautiful place to land. Edmister mapped out how far the balloons had traveled, and from Eastgate to the camp on Lac Pentecote the distance was ap-

If you’re up for something six-feet deep, ‘The Undead’ will click with you TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER THE BOOKWORM SEZ
You couldn’t click fast enough. The online push was for organ donors and it seemed like a good idea. Your decision now to make an act of generosity later could save or enhance someone else’s life. Besides… you’d be dead so you really wouldn’t care, right? Right. But read “The Undead” by Dick Teresi, and you may have some things to add to your click. What defines a time of death? Are you dead when you stop breathing, or when your heart quits beating? Is brain-death the absolute end, or is it when there’s no “you” in you? What determines death? Every culture through millennia has asked those questions, but the truth is that there’s no answer yet. We think we know when death arrives – but we could be wrong. For years, Dick Teresi has poked holes in tenets about death. He says he’s made people “uneasy, even angry.” They defended their “traditional ideas of life and death” but he claims to be “merely a journalist reporting the facts…” One of those facts, he says “cheerfully,” is that we’re all going to die. Religious beliefs and NDEs offer comfort but “something will kill us eventually.” So how do we know when we go? Since 1968, when a com-
mittee gathered at the Harvard Medical School to “hammer out a set of simple criteria” allowing doctors to determine time of death, it seems as though the focus has been on a “permanently nonfunctioning brain” and not the heart when figuring a finish. But, asks Teresi, is “brain death” really The End? Teresi cites studies in which brain dead patients had EEGs. People who are “brain dead” grow, give birth, often breathe on their own, and sometimes only “look sick.” Most sobering, “dead” organ donors have been observed to have spikes in blood pressure during organ harvesting and, unlike normal surgeries, anesthesiologists weren’t allowed to administer analgesic. Horrifying, no doubt. So what can you do to protect yourself? Read this book, first of all, and learn. Then, have a talk with your doctor about a medical directive. That’s the first place to start before you reach your last place. In many paragraphs, in many ways, author Dick Teresi acknowledges that his words are going to stir up a storm of controversy. He claims that he’s already lost friends because of his research. He says he’s angered doctors and scientists with the necessary questions he asks in “The Undead,” but he asked anyhow. Still, there’s nothing maudlin, overly-morbid, or morose here; in fact, this book about death is delightfully lively. Teresi has a biting sense of humor with a dose of the absurd, tempered by willingness to

see beauty in sacrifice. Readers who can peer past his troubling main subject will be rewarded by a thoughtful, meaningful look at how we live before we don’t. Though it’s a definite argument-starter, “The Undead” will make you think about things you never thought you’d consider. If you’re up for something
that’s six-feet deep, this book will surely click with you. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.

Chatfield College in St. Martin and Cincinnati, Ohio, held its 41st graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. The ceremony was held in the Chapel at DePaul Cristo Rey High School in Cincinnati. It honored 51 students from both the St. Martin and Cincinnati campuses who either completed the requirements for graduation or will complete the requirements during the summer session. Clermont County graduates who received Associate Degrees were Elizabeth Jane Armstrong (Batavia), Marhyia Yelton Blair (Felicity), Kimberly K. Fannin and Susan J. Green (Williamsburg); Crystal Komala and Hannah Marie Phillips (Loveland). During the ceremony, Chatfield presented Judith M. Ruthven (posthumously) and John A. Ruthven with honorary doctorate degrees in public service. John Ruthven gave the commencement address. Judy Ruthven was a member of the Chatfield College Board of Trustees, a great supporter of education, and dedicated to Chatfield College and its mission. When she died in
June 2011, she left behind a legacy of historic preservation throughout southwest Ohio. She was a charter member of the Brown County Chamber of Commerce, and worked tirelessly to preserve Georgetown, Ohio’s history as well as helping to save many of Brown County’s covered bridges. She was a trustee of the US Grant Homestead Association, and served on the boards of the Cincinnati Nature Center, Friends of the William Howard Taft Birthplace, Hillside Trust for Cincinnati and surrounding counties, the Cincinnati Preservation Association and the Overthe-Rhine Restoration Project. John A. Ruthven, naturalist, author, lecturer, and internationally acknowledged master of wildlife art is often called the “20th Century Audubon.” His paintings have been included in acclaimed exhibitions such as The Artist of America Exhibition in Denver, Colorado and the Society of Animal Artist, a traveling museum exhibition included at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradell, New Jersey. Museums featuring his work include the Smithsonian Institution’s
versity, Cincinnati, Ohio— Theology and Humanities. She has worked for Cinergy, now Duke Energy, as manager of the Cinergy Foundation, at Franklin House Apartments, as manager, and before that, as an elementary school teacher. She has been a minister’s wife in Nebraska and Colorado, and a missionary for five years in Guatemala, Central America. Currently, she serves on the Xavier University Advisory Committee to the President, on the Committee for Small Arts Organizations for ArtsWave, and on the WGUC community board. Chatfield College is a private, Catholic, liberal arts college offering the Associate of Arts degree in St. Martin and Cincinnati. YMCA celebrates Father’s Day More than a century ago, Sonora Louis Smart Dodd aspired to create a holiday to honor fathers. The daughter of a single father and Civil War veteran was inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon and wondered why there was no holiday for fathers. After securing support from ministers in Spokane, Wash., her idea came to fruition with the first Father’s Day celebration at the Spokane YMCA on June
19, 1910. On Sunday, June 17, the Clermont Family YMCA, joins the nation in celebrating Father’s Day and recognizing the impact fathers and adult male role models make in children’s lives. Nationally, one out of three children lives in a home without their biological father, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And, societal factors such as unemployment, work-life balance or a lack of re-

sources can affect fathers’ ability to seek support in strengthening their parenting skills and more fully engaging in the lives of their children. The Y remains dedicated to providing resources and opportunities for fathers to further involve themselves in the well-being and development of their children. “As a nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y believes that strong family bonds are a foundation of strong communities, and we work to help all families to learn, grow and thrive,” said Gail W. Erhardt, Membership Experience Director, Clermont Family YMCA. “Today, Father’s Day reminds us why it’s important to recognize fathers and provide them with the support they need
to be the best parents and caregivers they can be.” Studies show that children with close relationships with their fathers and other adult male role models have more self-confidence and exhibit less depression, perform better academically and engage in significantly less drug and alcohol use. There are a variety of programs at the Clermont Family YMCA that foster understanding and companionship between children and their fathers – and moms – such as afternoon open volleyball, Youth/Adult group cycling, and many other group fitness classes designed for 8 and over. WWII War Era Story Project announced Ohio Department of Aging Director Bonnie Kantor-Burman and Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director Thomas N. Moe have announced the launch of the departments’ joint War Era Story Project. The effort will pick up where the Department of Aging’s award-winning 2009 Great Depression Story Project left off by collecting Ohioans’ memories from the start of World War II through the 1940s. The agencies are seeking stories by the people who lived them – from veterans of World War II, to the men, women and children who held steady on the home front. “We want to continue to help our elders tell their personal tales of sacrifice, perseverance and recovery during some of the most challenging and influential times in our nation’s history,” said Bonnie KantorBurman, director of the Department of Aging. “Whether they fought in the war, raised a family or grew up during the tumultuous 1940s here at home, our elders can teach us many things about thriving during adversity.” “The Second World War forever changed America; it challenged the nation and the world in ways that today’s young people may never experience,” added Col. Moe. “It remains critical that we learn from the generations that preceded us so that their lessons can help guide us into a prosperous future.” Stories should focus on the story-tellers’ experiences during the war and the years that followed, and should be 500 to 1,000 words long. You may include photographs, but
please note we cannot return them. Send stories with the author’s name, location and current age to: Ohio Department of Aging, Attn: War Era Story Project, 50 W. Broad St. / 9th Floor, Columbus, OH 43215-3363 You also may e-mail stories to WarEraStories@age.state.o h.us. For the first time, the department also is accepting video stories via YouTube. Videos should be no more than 10 minutes long. Upload the video to your personal YouTube account (available for free at YouTube.com), then e-mail the link to the address above or share it on the department’s page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/Ohio DeptOfAging). Stories should be received by July 31. Excerpts from the stories received will be posted to the Department of Aging’s website around Veteran’s Day in November. Full stories will be featured in the department’s free enewsletter, Boomerang. Visit www.aging.ohio.gov/news/ boomerang/ to read and subscribe. The Great Depression Story Project, conducted in 2009, gained national media attention and was named a “Notable Government Document” by Library Journal. It included more than 1,000 excerpts from over 300 submissions and has been viewed more than 38,000 times on the Department of Aging’s website (www.aging.ohio.gov/news /greatdepressionstoryproject/).

The nomination period ends August 1, 2012. “I urge all farmers and landowners to participate in this year’s county committee elections by nominating candidates by the August 1 deadline,” said Maurer. “County committees are a vital link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provide a voice to landowners and farmers so that they have an opportunity for their opinions and ideas to be heard. employer’s plan, or you may be able to roll the money over to a new employer’s plan. Alternatively, you could decide to transfer the assets into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Your financial advisor can help you make the choice that’s right for your situation. • Discuss your situation with a tax professional. You may want to meet with your tax professional to consider the benefits or liabilities of any differences in tax laws between your new location and your old one. You may also need to address any implications resulting from moving and changing jobs. • Review your financial goals. Some of your goals, such as those related to housing and where you want to retire, may have changed as a result of your move. So it’s a good idea to meet with your financial advisor to review your objectives. • Evaluate your monthly budget. If you followed a budget detailing your expenses and cash flow before your move, you may need to update it after you’ve settled in to your new home. If you haven’t set up a budget in the past, you’ve now got a good reason to establish one — because a
well-planned budget can help you avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs. • Update your insurance coverage. Make sure your vehicles, stored possessions and new residence are covered during your move. And if your health insurance is changing, be aware of what’s covered under your new policy. • Review your estate plans. If your move coincides with other important life events, such as marriage, divorce or remarriage, you may need to make some moves related to your estate plans, such as ensuring you have the correct beneficiary designations on any life insurance policies and your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts. Check with your legal advisor to determine which steps make sense for your situation. Moving may require you to adjust many aspects of your life. Reviewing the items on this checklist can help you get your financial house in order when you move into your new home. Article submitted by S. Christian Wilks, an Investment Representative with Edward Jones, Milford.
Help is available for those suffering with depression or other problems Dr. Lee Ann Watson with the Clermont County Mental Health and Recovery Board says that there is still a stigma that surrounds mental illness. “One out of four people will be impacted with a form of mental illness during their lifetime. Left untreated, depression and other forms of mental illness can result in alcohol and drug abuse, even sui-
cide. I want to encourage those who are feeling overwhelmed to reach out now; help is available.” Dr. Watson said that depression is the most common form of mental illness. “Depression can change the way you see yourself, your life, and those around you,” she said. “Symptoms of depression include a prolonged feeling of sadness, a dramatic change in
appetite, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, becoming withdrawn or isolated, and thoughts of death or suicide.” A 24-hour help line is available for those who are feeling overwhelmed. Almost everyone would agree: Moving is a hassle. In addition to selling your current home and finding a new one, you may need to deal with a new school for your kids, a new doctor, a new dentist — the list goes on and on. But you’ll also need to consider the financial aspects of your move — specifically, your investments, insurance, taxes and even your estate plans. How can you help make sure that your move doesn’t slow your progress toward your financial goals? Consider the following relocation “checklist”: • Open new bank accounts, and set up automatic transfers. If your move requires you to change banks, open your new accounts as soon as possible. And if you had your previous bank automatically move money each month from a checking or savings account into an investment, set up a similar arrangement at your new bank. • Decide what to do with your employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you are leaving your job, you’ll need to make some decisions about your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. For example, you might have the option of leaving your money in your former
Asparagus produces more each season STEVE BOEHME It’s very satisfying to produce food for your table year after year, with minimal attention. Asparagus is a perennial will grow larger and more productive each year and produce for many years with almost no maintenance, if you plant it properly. You can harvest handfuls of crisp, sweet stalks all during spring from an established patch. All you have to do is invest some time and effort to get your plants started, and patiently wait a few years for them to get established before you start to harvest. A common mistake with asparagus is to underestimate how many plants you actually need. Remember that while each plant may produce a pound or more of fresh spear each season, there are only one or two spears per plant on any given day. If you want to cut a family-sized harvest into your cooking pot, you’ll need six to ten productive plants per family member in your asparagus patch. You can plant asparagus any time the soil temperature exceeds 50 degrees. Start with two-year-old container-grown plants if your budget permits; if not you can get one-year roots. Planting holes should be one foot deep and wide, spaced two feet apart. If you are planting in trenches, rows should be spaced five feet apart. Giving the plants lots of room helps prevent fungus diseases by letting air circulate to keep them dry. Good drainage is important; waterlogged soils will lead to root rot. Sprinkle some 0-21-0 (triple super-phosphate) fertilizer in the bottom of the planting holes or trench before planting. Fill half full with compost or aged manure, sprinkle on some 10-10-10 fertilizer or Es-
Like most perennials, asparagus plants love an extralarge hole filled with rich compost. Deep, well-drained holes or trenches allow the root system to expand easily, yielding lots of big, fat spears.
poma Plant-Tone, and plant the roots so that the base of the plant (root crown) is about four inches below ground level. Only fill to the tips of the plants; if your plants don’t have stalks yet, wait for them to grow before backfilling around them. The best weed control is mulching. You can use straw, composted leaves, or grass clippings for this purpose. If you have a problem with perennial weeds, after harvest is over you can cut all the plants to the ground and then spray the row with Roundup to kill the weeds, and then let the asparagus re-grow. You’ll need to wait a year before you harvest. Let the plants grow all season, fertilizing occasionally and mulching to prevent weeds. After frost kills the tops cut them off. Repeat this the second year. Start harvesting next year, but only cut while spears are at least as thick as your finger. After harvest is over let the remaining stalks grow tall. Asparagus beetles chew on the fern, causing the stem to turn brown and reducing the yield the next year. If Asparagus beetles are seen, spray the ferns with an approved insecticide. For disease prevention, spray with an approved fungicide on a 7 to 14 day schedule beginning when the ferns reach a 3 to 4 foot height and continuing until mid Sep-
tember. Here are our recommended varieties for the Ohio valley: Jersey Knight produces a bumper crop of large, fat spears, typically 5/8-inch in diameter, bright green with deep purple tips. One of the easiest varieties to grow, they have terrific vigor that makes these plants come back stronger every year. The yield from Jersey Knight is 2 to 4 times greater than older strains such as the Washington series, highly rustresistant and tolerant of Fusarium, Crown and Rust Rot. Purple Passion spears are larger and more tender than green asparagus, without any of the strings that can make green asparagus tough. The whole spear can be cooked without wasting the butt. It has so much more natural sugar it’s often snapped off and eaten raw (its color makes it a distinctive salad garnish) but when it’s cooked its sweetness gives it a mild, nutty flavor.
