The eighth annual Taste of Clermont is returning to Batavia Friday, Aug. 12 and Saturday, Aug. 13. The event is being held along Main Street after being held in Eastgate for the past two years. Terry Morris, president of the Village Association of Batavia, which produces the Taste as its main fund-raiser, said that the association board decided that Batavia is a much better location for the event. “Main Street has a certain feel to it, a lot more ambience,” Morris said. “People can walk to it and the parking is easy – I like it much better.” Morris said that there are other changes being made this year that will be wellreceived by the public. After three years of exper-
imenting with an entrance fee, there will be no charge to enter this year’s Taste. Morris also said that the layout of the booths and attractions will be different this year. “The event has been too spread out,” Morris said. “This year we’re going to go from 3rd Street to just past Haglage Park.” Barb Haglage, co-chair of the Taste of Clermont Committee, said that there will be various seating areas set up at the event in addition to a 30’ by 60’ tent at Haglage Park. “We hope that this year’s Taste of Clermont will have a nice relaxing atmosphere for families and everyone who joins us this year,” Haglage said. Live music will be one of the main attractions at the Taste. This year’s headliners are The Del-Vikings and Rare Earth. There will also be a variety of food booths, a KidZone featuring Guitar Hero, a climbing wall, games and other activities, and a Teen Zone for older kids. There will be a car show

Some Tips If You Plan To Attend . . . from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday and a motorcycle show on Friday, a corn hole tournament, and many interesting booths. “This is not like the Taste of Cincinnati,” Morris said. “It’s the Taste of Clermont, which is an all around festival, not just 100 restaurants.” The Taste will be a twoday event this year, running from 5 p.m. – midnight Friday, and 11 a.m. – midnight Saturday. Morris said that eliminating Sunday will help keep the focus on what is best about the Taste. “Saturday night is always the pinnacle of the event,” Morris said. “We’re going to concentrate on our best days and try to improve on what we do best.” Haglage said that a new feature of the Taste will be “Demo Day.” At this event, businesses will be able to give demonstrations, from 15 minutes to an hour, on the topic of their choice. A warm summer evening is the perfect setting to catch up with old friends over tasty food and fun activities, and that is exactly what Taste of Clermont organizers were thinking when they began planning Reunion Night, a new addition to the Taste this year. “The core thing behind this is just trying to get people together,” Terry Morris, president of the Village Association of Batavia and co-chair of the Taste of Clermont, said about Reunion Night. Morris came up with the idea in February when he was looking for new ideas for the Taste of Clermont. He came across an event called “Old Home Week,” which originated in New England. It consisted of an organized invitation of residents and former residents in towns to a reception-like event. Morris said he was interested in creating a similar event to take place during the Taste of Clermont, so he and other organizers began exploring ways to make it happen. “We thought that people like to get together in the summer, but don’t always
want to go through all the expense and work having big picnics, grill-outs or reunions,” Morris said. So he figured having the event during the Taste of Clermont and providing residents and former residents the food and activities would be an easy and enjoyable setting. “This will be a location to reunite,” Morris said. Reunion Night will take place Aug. 13 during the hours of the Taste of Clermont, and will be along Main Street in Batavia, centered around the courthouse. Morris said people are welcome to bring lawn chairs and set them up during Reunion Night. He said having both the Taste of Clermont and Reunion Night located in the center of town will give it a homey atmosphere. “It has a different feel,” Morris said about the location, as opposed to those in the past. “It’s a cozy, defined area and it just feels different.” Morris said hardest part of planning for a reunion has been spreading the word to current and former residents.

He has contacted alumni organizations and is working on creating a Facebook page for the event. A lot of the organization, however, comes from people spreading the word to friends and neighbors. Morris’ hopes are to provide a venue for the gathering of old friends, classmates and family. He said whether it is a group of families in a neighborhood or people from a bowling team, Reunion Night will be a place they can enjoy each other’s company. “I think people just get caught up in this merry-goround and things that you thought were important get tossed to the wayside,” Morris said. “We’re not actually talking to each other and I really think that is important.”
