Fireworks will be major new attraction this year By Wayne Boblitt The Brown County Press Fireworks will be a new highlight of this year's Annual Ohio Tobacco Festival, according to 2010 OTF Committee Recording Secretary Billie Applegate. The 29th Annual OTF will kick off this Thursday, Aug. 26, in downtown Ripley, and continue to Sunday, Aug. 29, with a wide vari-
ety of activities to please all visitors. This year's theme is “Celebrating The Tobacco Farmers”, Mrs. Applegate reported. When the OTF began during the early 1980s, Ripley was the site of the only burley tobacco market in Ohio. Brown County produces the most burley tobacco among the 20 to 30 Ohio counties where farmers produce that crop.

While later changes in the tobacco industry resulted in an elimination of Ripley's tobacco market and a move of most OTF activities to downtown Ripley, tobacco farmers in Brown County and throughout Ohio still labor hard to produce that crop and support their families. Mrs. Applegate said the OTF Committee came up with this year's “Celebrating The Tobacco Farmers” theme and added, “It fits.” Pedigo to Be Grand Marshal Ben Pedigo will be the 2010 OTF Opening Parade grand marshal this Friday. Pedigo moved to Ripley in 1983 and resides there with his wife, Kim, and their children, Harrison, Katherine, and Grace. A talented banjo player, he has been involved with the OTF since its early days as both an entertainer and a person who books musical acts for the festival. Pedigo began playing banjo at age 8 and performed at Six Flags parks all over Georgia for a number of years. He also performed in Nashville, Tenn., during his studies there at Vanderbilt University.
The 2010 grand marshal became interested in building restoration in college and moved to Ripley to help with renovating a number of buildings in the area. He and his wife restored the 1860s row house where they reside on Front Street and use one of their row houses in Ripley as a music studio. Pedigo works for Rumpke in its recycling efforts. Mrs. Applegate said the OTF Committee selected him as this year's grand marshal because of his involvement and good support of the festival over its long history. In addition to the Opening Parade, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Ripley-Union-LewisHuntington Elementary School on

The recipients of this year's OTF Scholarship will be recognized and honored at the VIP Dinner. The Fireworks Show scheduled at dusk will conclude the OTF's second day. That event will be moved to Saturday night, Aug. 28, in the event of rain. continued on page 3

29th Annual OTF opens August 26th . . . continued from page 2
Queen Contest Opens OTF The opening day's featured event, which also is considered the OTF's annual opening and welcoming event, will be the 2010 OTF Queen Contest at 8 p.m. Thursday while the Opening Parade and Fireworks Show will be the highlight activities on Friday, Aug. 27. Maysville, Ky., resident Melanie Day, the 2009 OTF Queen, will crown her successor this Thursday on the Main Stage in downtown Ripley. Saturday, Aug. 28, will be the most activity-packed of all four days with such activities as an Antique Car Show and Parade, a 5-Kilometer Run and Walk, tobacco-related contests, a Horseshoe Pitch Tournament, the Third Annual Ripley Idol Talent Show, and the ever-popular Baby Show and Bed Race. Activities on the concluding day will include a Prayer Breakfast and a variety of contests including Baking, Arm Wrestling, Cornhole, Tobacco Spitting, and Cigar and Pipe Smoking. The Grand Prize Drawing of six winning tickets in the 2010 OTF Raffle will conclude this year's festival about 4 p.m. next Sunday. Children will have a variety of carnival rides to enjoy all four days. In addition to special events and contests, those attending the 2010 OTF will have a variety of merchandise booths at which to purchase souvenirs and useful items all four days as well as a large variety of the ever-popular food booths featuring delectable items ranging from pizza to hamburgers to ice cream to Cajun cuisine.
Race Kicks Off Saturday The 5-Kilometer Run and Walk will kick off Saturday's activities with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and competition at 8 a.m. on Front Street. Registration for the Antique Car Show will begin at 8 a.m. on Front Street with the show scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and the Antique Car Parade to begin about 3 p.m. in downtown Ripley (parade route to be announced). Registration for the Blue Ribbon Kids 4-H Baby Show will begin at 9 a.m. on the Main Stage with the show slated to begin about 10 a.m. The Tobacco Cutting Contest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Eagle Creek Road farm where Billie Applegate and her husband, Greg, the 2010 OTF Committee president, reside in Union Township. It is the only major festival event that doesn't occur in downtown Ripley. Contests slated for that Saturday include 4-H and FFA Tobacco Grading at 11 a.m. and Tobacco Stripping at noon, both on Front Street; the Horseshoe Pitch Tournament at noon on Cherry Street between South Second and Front streets; and the Garden Tractor Obstacle Contest at 4:30 p.m., the Wagon Backing Contest at 5 p.m., and the Bed Race Contest at 6 p.m., all on Front Street. Some children's races and games are scheduled at 11 a.m. in downtown Ripley, and a Queens Luncheon is slated at the downtown Masonic Lodge at noon. The Ripley Idol Talent Show will return for a third year at 2 p.m. on the Main Stage with regis-
tration beginning at 1 p.m. The Barcodes band is scheduled to perform a variety of 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and current rock and pop hits beginning at 7 p.m. Festival Is Ongoing Tradition While the OTF attendance is not as high as it was during the 1980s, it still is significant with Greg Applegate estimating about 20,000 attending last year's celebration. “In this small community, to keep this festival as long as we have, I think we have been doing pretty good,” Mr. Applegate noted. The OTF is staffed and organized entirely by volunteers, and funds to host the annual festival, which includes free admission, are raised by such events as the OTF Grand Raffle and Daily Raffle. “That's where we get our income from to put this festival on for our community and surrounding communities,” Mr. Applegate said. Work for a certain year's festival begins shortly after another year's festival concludes with the OFT Committee meeting once per month during most, but not all, months between one August and the next.

Shuttle Service Available Prayer Event Kicks Off Sunday The Annual OTF Prayer Breakfast will kick off the festival's final day, as it does every year, at 7:30 a.m. at RULH Elementary School, but Chairman Doug Green said this year's event will be different than last year's and other previous years' in that there won't be a featured speaker. The event will feature a morning of gospel music performed by Green himself, Harriett Jackson Groh, Victory Voices and the Myer Family. The Firemen's Parade will return for a second straight year after having been absent for some festival years prior to 2009. The Parade lineup will begin about 11:30 a.m. near

2010 OTF Schedule Of Events
Page 2 - 2010 OHIO TOBACCO FESTIVAL

South Second Street in uptown Ripley, festival activities this Friday will include the Open Tobacco Judging and Show at 1 p.m. in the Front Street area; a VIP Dinner at Courts-Fussnecker Post 367 of the American Legion in Ripley, which will follow the Parade; and country music by David James and The Gang beginning at 7 p.m. on the Main Stage. The recipients of this year's OTF Scholarship will be recognized and honored at the VIP Dinner. The Fireworks Show scheduled at dusk will conclude the OTF's second day. That event will be moved to Saturday night, Aug. 28, in the event of rain. continued on page 3
