Local veterans thanked with Honor Flights BY MEGAN ALLEY Sun staff

The National Honor Flight Network recently recognized the service of two area military veterans by flying them, free of charge, to the District of Columbia for a one-day visit. Howard Daugherty, the Clermont County Veterans’ Services Commission executive director, is a 69 yearold U.S. Army veteran. He served in the Vietnam War from 1967-68 as a door gunner and crew chief, where he earned a Purple Heart for his contributions. Early in the morning on Oct. 22, Daugherty met up with 96 other Purple Heart veterans and their caretakers in Columbus to fly to the nation’s capital, which he had not visited since the early 1970s. The trip was coordinated by Honor Flight Tri-State, a member of the national network. Honor Flights recognized the county’s senior veterans with free trips to the D.C. to visit war memorials. The group landed at Baltimore Washington International Airport and was greeted by midshipman from the U.S. Naval Academy before transferring to three charter buses headed to DC; the caravan received a police escort the entire day. “It was very moving,” Daugherty said. They first visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where they listened to presentations as well as a performance by a military band. While there, Daugherty took time to pay tribute to five soldiers from his platoon and a friend who are memorialized on the wall.

“That was a bad feeling; very sad,” he said. The group went on to visit other notable sites, such as the Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Air Force Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. “That was moving to see the changing of the guard, and the cemetery is so large and expansive,” Daugherty said. After a day with a packed agenda, the group returned to the airport for their midevening departure flight. When they arrived back in Columbus, they were greeted by what Daugherty estimated to be more than 1,000 people, including his wife of 49 years, Terri. “It was fantastic; it was a moving experience,” Daugherty said. “I’m glad I went.” Ernie Siders, 85, is a U.S. Air Force veteran who served during the Korean War from 1949 to 1954 as an instructor in California and in a specialized department in England. He, along with 70 other veterans and their guardians, flew from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to DC on Oct. 25. “It was good to meet some of the other veterans and listen to their stories,” Siders said. “We had a good comradery.” Siders, who hosts WOBO’s Big Band Music program every Tuesday from 4-8 p.m., was on a waiting list for three years before he received notice that he would be going on the flight. “I was honored to go on the honor flight; it’s a great thing to be able to be able to go to Washington and be able to go to the memori-

als,” he said. Similar to Daugherty’s trip, the buses that Siders and his group were on were escorted by police. “Along the way, we could see people that would stop, wave and applaud; some even saluted,” he said. “It was amazing.” He added, “We would be at memorials and people ranging from age six to 90 would come up to us and shake our hand and thank us of what we’ve done.” Siders was one of four veterans in the group selected to march alongside the Guards of Honor at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “We got to participate in the laying of the wreath; that was very moving,” he said. “I felt really great about that.” Siders, who last visited the District in late 1948 as part of his high school senior class trip, was taken aback by how much the capital has changed. “I was amazed at all the huge buildings in Washington, and now there are four lanes of traffic, which is bumper to bumper,” he said. When Siders and his group returned to CVG, they were greeted by about 400 people and a chorus of bagpipes. “I never shook so many hands in my life,” he said. “They all thanked us for our time and service.” For Siders, the trip brought back a lot of memories. “It was good to reminisce with the veterans,” he said, adding the whole trip was “quite amazing.” “I would really stress to veterans that if you haven’t gone, do so,” he said. “It’s really nice and everything is
