typography • logic Staring with the vanilla Helvetica font I first analyzed its structure and alignments to understand its formal logic. Following the original logic closely, I created my own “improved” version of the Helvetica font, tweaking the curves and alignments slightly in each. Next, I dematerialized the letters to form an abstracted composition to further explore its formal logic. In my final product, I used different line weights and hatching to emphasize these abstracted shapes.

variations • construction I next advanced my investigation into 3D with the help of Rhinoceros. Using 3 main commands: extrude, sweep, & Boolean difference; I transformed the flat linework into 3D objects of 3 distinct families. This further developed by rearranging and intersecting the existing shapes to form more complex and interesting iterations. With these shapes done, I began to deconstruct these shapes to explore each of its compositions.

fabrication • models After finishing the designs & preliminary experimentation
of
the
different
construction techniques, I made the final template. I added a system of tabs which allowed for adhesive to be applied and connect the surfaces and shapes together, for the curved surface I scaled down the tabs to allow for better articulation. The final object was fabricated using 2-ply museum board and a laser cutter, Which was then hand glued and assembled.

containers • renders For my final segment, I evolved my shapes into more inhabitable spaces rather than just plain volumes. I combined all three of the shapes I have created earlier. And instead of existing as volumes, I arranged them into the internal void of a different shape instead. In order to put my object in a more architectural and realistic context, I created hyper realistic / surrealistic renderings using a combination of Rhinoceros rendering and Photoshop.
