THE CLEVELAND FOUNDATION

The C leveland Foundation w as e s­ tablish ed January 2, 1914 to serve perm anently the health, educational and charitable n eeds o f the G reater C leveland community. The first of its kind and now w idely copied, this com m unity trust is characterized by four main features. 1. Its fu n ds are the union of num er­ ous gifts, large, sm all and m edium -sized, left at different tim es by variou s donors. 2. Local banks, which are T ru stees of the C leveland Foundation, safegu ard and in­ vest the funds, m aking av ailab le the incom e, and under certain conditions, the principal, for the charitable p u rposes of the Foundation. 3. Endow m ent incom e, and under certain conditions, the principal, is d isb u rsed by a D istribution Com mittee, m em bers of which serve without com pensation for five-year term s. 4. A ny contributor m ay designate his preferred charity and his w ish es w ill be ob ­ served u n less changing conditions m ake such pu rpose unn ecessary, undesirable, im practical or im possible. In such event the fu n ds can there­ after be u sed for such other charitable and ed u ca­ tional pu rp o ses as will, in the opinion of the D istribution Com m ittee, m ore effectually prom ote the public w elfare.



THE YEAR 1966

A s the Foundation com pleted its fift y - t h ir d y e a r o f p h ila n th r o p ic s e r v ic e to G reater C leveland it recorded another year of significant grow th in a sse ts and support of com ­ m unity activities. For the first time disbursem en ts fo r health, educational, so cial w elfare and civic p u rp o ses exceeded the four million dollar mark. During 1966 a total of $4,853,564 w as received from 98 donors as new gifts to principal. S ix new trust fu n ds w ere established, w hich with addition s to existin g funds and m e­ m orial gifts to the Com bined Fund, brought the year-end endow m ent of the Foundation to $68,437,749 (book value). M arket value of these a sse ts w as nearly $104,000,000. Certain of the tru sts currently provide only partial — but even­ tually c o m p lete—b e n e fit to the Foundation. The Foundation at year-end adm in­ istered 143 sep arate fun ds. The D istribution Com m ittee allocates incom e from these funds — and in som e c a se s a portion of the principal — fo r philanthropic pu rposes. A list of the funds, n am ed in m ost c a se s for donors, w ill be found beginning on page 9 of this Report.

In 1966 the D istribution Committee authorized the disbursem en t of $4,487,818 for a w ide range of com m unity n eeds and activities (including adm inistrative cost of $62,364 or 1.4% o f total expenditures). A detailed accounting of the 284 gran ts m ade to 150 agencies, all in the G reater C leveland area u n less otherw ise noted, is set forth later in this Report.

SIX NEW TRUSTS ESTABLISHED

The follow ing new fu n ds becam e effective in 1966: Frank J. and Nellie L. Chappie Fund — With a value of about $600,000 this fund w as estab lish ed at The C leveland T rust Com pany under a trust agreem ent executed by the late Frank C happie in 1920. Incom e is unre­ stricted after paym ent of certain life interests. Elsa Claus Memorial Fund No. 2 — T his unrestricted fund w as estab lish ed at Cen­ tral N ational Bank with an initial distribution of $18,683 under the W ill of the late Em anuel Gynn. J. A m brose and Jessie W heeJer Purcell Memorial Fund —• T his fund becam e effective in 1966 with the distribution of a su b stan tial am ount of income to the Foundation. Income is to be u sed for aged person s and for sick, crippled and needy children. A s there is pending litigation with re­ spect to this trust, the principal value of the fund (estim ated at $4,000,000) is not currently included as a part of the Foundation ’s endowm ent. Edith Wright Memorial Fund — T his unrestricted fund with a value of $265,660 w as estab lish ed at The N ation al City Bank under a trust agreem ent executed by the late Edith Wright. ADDITIONS TO EXISTING FUNDS

Principal is to be u sed over a five-year period. The E dw ard C. F la n ig o n F u n d w a s in c r e a s e d b y $2,500, the William C. Scofield M em orial Fund by $38,464, and the Edith Anisfield Wolf Fund by $70,744, all represen ting addition al distributions from the respective estates. An addition of $2,290,000 w as m ade to Harry Coulby Fund No. 1 by the tru stees of the Pickands M ather - C oulby Fund pu rsu ant to cer­ tain prov isio n s of Mr. C oulby’s Will. The Cleveland Recreational Arts Fund w as in creased by $5,575 in gifts from The C leveland Range Com pany, L. E. Em sheim er, Kurt L. Seelbach and the Raym ond John W ean Foun­ dation. Valley View, and the Cleveland Employee Rela­ tions Council Fund w as estab lish ed with a con­ tribution of $5,170.50. MEMORIAL GIFTS AND THE COMBINED FUNDS

The Com bined Fund (so-called b e ­ c au se contributions are com bined for investm ent pu rposes) w as in creased by $99,317 in new gifts in 1966. A num ber o f new m em orial funds were estab lish ed and addition s w ere m ade to existing funds. The Edna L. and G ustav W. Carlson Foundation Memorial Fund w as created with an initial gift of $16,000 from the estate o f the late Edna C arlson. The Richard H. Kohn Fund w as estab lish ed w ith a $5,694 b eq u est from the late Mr. Kohn and the Robert N. Schwartz Fund for R etarded Children w as created with a bequ est o f $8,250 from the estate o f the late Cora N. Schw artz. The Inez and Harry Clement A w ard Fund w as estab lish ed with an initial gift of $5,000 from Dr. and M rs. Kenneth Clement. The fund will provide a college scholarsh ip for a student with potential for service to this community. The e stab ­ lishm ent of a m em orial or sp ecial p u rpose fund in the Com bined Fund is a sim ple procedure and can be accom plished with a m od est gift.
