Copperplate Gothic was first designed for stationary and society printing but now is used in a variety of different commercial printing. its classic use was for business cards and lettering on frost-glass office doors.



Franklin Gothic 1904

Is a sans-serif typeface that was originally created by Morris Benton in 1902. During this time “Gothic” is common term meaning sans-serif. Franklin Gothic has been used in many advertisements and headlines in newspapers.

The Arts and Crafts Movement was a reaction against the industrial revolution. Anxieties about the industrial life created a positive revaluation of craftsmanship



With the increase in industries, agriculture, and transportation, employment rate rose but standard of living dropped Designers during the movement sought to improve the standard of decorative design



Medieval Guilds Groups of artists, architects, and craftsmen who formed an alliance to keep a high standard of workmanship, regulate trade and competition, and protect the secrets of their crafts.

Catered to the middle class market who wanted affordable, decent looking furniture. He used Factory methods to produce the basic components but then utilized craftsmen to finish and assemble the pieces.

today, his furniture still survives and is a high collector’s item

Kelmscott Press -Founded by Morris in 1891 Named after a village he lived in since 1871 -High quality hand-printed books -Morris designed and cut the typefaces, ornamental borders and title pages base on the style of medieval manuscripts

Nouveau designers were against borrowing different design ideas from the past or other cultures. Only the Japanese approach to nature was admired by the designers.
