f someone’s not just going to praise a resort but also create his own, you expect him to have a track record of successes. For Gladden Caye, a unique, new resort opened on a private island in Belize, Chris Krolow, of HGTV’s Island Hunters, has spearheaded the project, bringing with him 20 years of experience in the traveling business and private island real estate. For just two guests and also including a spare bedroom for their friends, the island creates an ultra-private experience.

Krolow, the show’s executive producer and host, has made it his mission to help others find their dream property anywhere in the world, and he’s done so since 1999. His efforts materialized in his own company, Private Islands, Inc., now a leader in private island sales and rentals, and he additionally manages real estate marketplace Private Islands Online and its biannual magazine. When visiting Placencia, Belize, adjacent to the western hemisphere’s longest barrier reef, he stumbled across the island that would become Gladden, noting its white sands and surrounding turquoise-blue ocean. Thus, using the landscape as the foundation for what’s been described as Krolow’s dream project, Gladden centers around a single private modern Mayan-style villa designed for one couple and any guests. Staff members, including a chef, concierge, and manager, who reside on a second private island just two minutes away, provide the all-inclusive services expected at a larger resort and, while mostly hidden, are ready to respond at a moment’s notice. island itself is just a few hours from Miami, it feels as if you’re spending your vacation in a secluded Polynesian atoll halfway across the globe, while costing less than other high-end resorts where you’d share facilities with other couples. To visit, guests must first fly via helicopter from Belize, where, once you’re in the air, you get the same picturesque perspective of the barrier reef that caused Krolow to fall in love with the island. Once you’ve arrived, you can make your way to the 3,000-squarefoot villa, surrounded by aquamarine lagoons and designed to give you stunning views in any direction. Having no neighbors adds to its exclusive, intimate environment, while all support structures can’t be seen from the main house. Inside, dark woods and wide windows letting you look out at the ocean furnish the master suite, and a “privacy meter” indicates if you’re alone or if staff is visiting the island. For anyone coming along, the space in the second master bedroom sufficiently accommodates a second couple. During your stay, simply walk up to the roof

In providing an all-inclusive experience, Gladden works with a rotating group of chefs from some of the world’s most renowned restaurants and pairs your dishes with a sommelier-curated wine selection. Foods reflect various local specialties, while the chefs utilize herbs grown on a nearby island and fish from the surrounding waters. And, for a truly customized experience, the staff crafts each meal to your tastes and can even fly in your favorite delicacy ahead of your trip. For whatever gets prepared, you’ll be served on the villa’s roof deck or in the chef’s kitchen. Of course, all that water, the reef, and nearby land open up opportunities for exploring everything the island and Belize’s coast have to offer. Work with the on-site concierge to schedule snorkeling in the water right outside your villa, or arrange for a trip to Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, considered one of the world’s best scuba diving locations and a spot where, for a few months during the year, you’ll be able to swim with whale sharks. As well, depending
upon your hobbies, you’ll have the chance to try spear and deep-sea fishing, book a boat charter, or earn your scuba certification with an on-site PADI instructor. On land, rejuvenate with any of the standard treatments offered at the island’s spa, or spend some time at Placencia Village. Located at the end of a peninsula, Placencia has a few entertainment and dining choices, including restaurants, bars, and a casino, and serves as your introduction to Belize’s jungle, home to over 570 bird species, tall waterfalls, and ancient Mayan Ruins. While you can devote practically a whole day to exploring the rainforest, nearby, you can continue your journey to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s only jaguar preserve. When you think of New York’s Madison Avenue, shopping and advertising are often the first facets coming to mind. Yet, what could’ve been a busy spectacle reflecting the surrounding atmosphere has turned into a tranquil oasis created by BrittoCharette. Refined and contemporary, this apartment characterized by blue and copper accents within a monochrome scheme leaves the building’s restored wood panels intact, incorporates artistic details reflective of the client’s tastes, and is structured as both a living and entertainment space.
Carrier and Company Printing House Created as a West Village industrial building in 1910, the Printing House – converted into apartments in the late ‘80s – has retained various historical touches, including doubleheight ceilings and windows and an Italian Renaissance façade. Yet, going through another series of renovations over the past few years, the structure saw contributions from multiple interior designers, including Carrier and Company, keep its key facets while adding more warmth.
