Introduction | 9

Project Brief The design for the Cultural Centre + Hybrid aims to engage public participation and imagination through partaking, identifying, learning and creating cultural space typologies, in other words, filling the cultural void. With research findings of the project site surroundings, the main considerations are to build up awareness of the site’s historical values, showcase feasibility of “old and new” developments and improve access to the site.

Project Site The selected site is located along New Bridge Road, in between Kong Chow Wui Koon and Jean Yip Loft, with Duxton Plain Park at the back. Buildings such as Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple, People’s Park Complex, and other shop-houses are located near the site as well.

10 | Introduction

Design Concept Singapore has become more globalized over the years, and most teenagers are unable to speak their respective dialects — Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Hainanese and more to their elders, such as their grandparents, who may speak primarily in dialect. This might be due to the restriction of the Chinese dialects in mass media back in 1979. As a result, this may have created a gap between generations. Dialect is very important to us as it is our roots and it defines the various dialect groups in Singapore.

Design Strategy Using the rich culture of dialect in its dichotomy of the diminishing reality as a metaphor, the design intention has a ‘invincible’ facade with a very rich interior. The use of glass louvres creates a visual illustration, yet openness of spaces for more interaction. Informal seating arrangement are carved out with the use of timber calls for more casual, yet engaged communication. This is made to “tear down” the perception of formal, serious concept of typically known cultural centres.

TENT OUT Type: Temporary Park Connector Site: Duxton Plain Park Period: Y3 S1 // Primer Project// 2018

New Bridge Road

Introduction | 25

Project Brief The Cultural Connector, a Cultural Revelation (Revolution) for the community acts as a bridging portal to reveal and revolutionize the cultural activities at Duxton Plain Park next to the Cultural Centre + Hybrid. This Connector aims to nurture a collaborative culture between cultural needs, people, events, community, experience, and space. This sense of place bridges temporary events and community activities to the permanence of Cultural Centre

+ Hybrid

by providing a space

to create active physical and social intervention for cultural awareness.

Project Site Dubbed as the connector, the selected site, Duxton Plain Park, that amalgams into a corner of Chinatown at the junction of New Bridge Road and Kreta Ayer Road with a green belt running along Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple and shop-houses. The proposal aims to transform the existing park to an alternative community architectural model that celebrates the existing urban fabric while staying relevant to contemporary planning concerns.

Introduction | 35

Project Brief The site is located in Kampung Naga, Tasikmalaya, Bandung, Indonesia. It is a region inhabited by a group of people who strongly uphold their ancestral customs. They reject foreign cultures from outsiders if it interferes and undermine the cultures and sustainability of the village. Our challenge is to build a design for a pre-school for all ages, and this will heavily rely on the field research conducted. These include observations, interviews and participatory design methods to understand the cultural practices, social structure, psychological and economic well-being of the community.

Design Strategy The approach to the design of the school is to build it circular, giving it a friendlier look while allowing children to run around endlessly. With the concept of integrating work and play, classrooms are divided by foldable louvred doors which are openable when necessary. This allows children to have a view towards the central courtyard, blurring the boundaries between play and work. The materials used are the same as of kampung huts. Adobe bricks and bamboo weavings for the walls, and coconut leaves for the roofs. These materials provide thermal comfort due to their low thermal mass capabilities.
