MAXIMUM MINIMALISATION

A classic white wall creates a minimalistic backdrop for the light oak wood furniture and flooring to achieve an overall harmonious look at this compact, 642 sq-ft residence in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Conceived by Clifton Leung Design Workshop, ceiling light troughs create a visual illusion of higher spaces, while a ‘floating’ cabinet with light troughs on the underside creates add to the illusion with a visually lengthened floor space. The entrance of the apartment is highlighted by a full-length blackboard, where guests can leave messages and the owners write notes to each other. The contrasting linear pattern of the wall, floor tiles and countertop creates a visual interest in the bathroom, where the floating cabinet and white vanity elements open up the space. A palette of warm earth tones and shades of brown create harmony and provide contrast against the neutral white background. Throughout the apartment, warm lighting enhances the sense of cosiness and ease. Capitalising on the designer’s philosophy of ‘minimalism to maximisation’, full-height cabinets are installed to maximise storage space — again critical in Hong Kong apartments, which are notorious for having insufficient facilities for storage, whether in the kitchen, bedrooms or communal areas. In the kitchen, for example, built-in appliances provide a perfect solution for the long and narrow layout, resulting in a sleek, stylish effect. This is further enhanced by the installation of a frosted glass panel at the far end, with the additional light creating a sense of airy openness. Another issue common to Hong Kong flats — the shortage of bedrooms — was addressed by the creation of a Japanese-style tatami setting with a built-in wardrobe, to make provision for a guestroom. With a simple mattress, the space is all set to accommodate guest for a comfortable stay. At other times, this private space serves as a perfect spot to enjoy a tete-a-tete with friends over a cup of tea.
