EDITION 22 1 August 2019
Calling
Deputy Principal: Marketing The Clifton Challenge took place today! This event is one that takes pride of place in the history of the College and was started in 2003 (the year after the College was founded). The original race was run/ walked along the Comrades route from Cato Ridge to Umlaas Road and back. When the logistics of this became too challenging, we moved the race to Midmar and since 2015 have moved it to Durban’s beachfront promenade. This event tests one’s own ability and, for most, requires grit and determination to withstand the challenge.
On the Academic front, the matrics are hard at work preparing for the Trial Examinations which start on Monday 12 August. These examinations are an indication of what the finals will be like and always assist our gents in their preparations. Please remember the significant role that women have played in the history of South Africa, hence the celebration of Women’s Day on Friday 9 August. This important date in the history of our country, when approximately 230 000 women marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria, took place 63 years ago, in 1956. To quote Nelson Mandela: “Freedom cannot be achieved unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression.”
It is important for every boy to finish – even if he chooses to walk the whole way. The Prep Grade 7 boys traditionally run a 10km route while the Grade 4 to 6 boys were introduced to the culture of the race for the first time this year along a shorter route. Well done to all Grade 4 to 12 boys who successfully overcame “The Clifton Challenge”.
This is an important aspect we need to remember, more so in a boys’ school. Our Founding Headmaster in 1924 was Harry Stubbs. Interestingly enough, his daughter Dorothy taught Class One at Clifton until she married. Her position as class teacher, was filled by Helen Fenell, who, as Helen Joseph, was later to play a vital role in the struggle against apartheid. Helen was one of the leaders, along with Lilian Ngoyi, of the march on the Union Buildings in 1956. We have a public speaking trophy named after Helen Joseph to honour her memory. Remember to acknowledge and celebrate the role of women at home and in the work place. We can all relate to a significant woman, who has played an important role in our life. Enjoy the long weekend!

(Above) Jono Knight (Grade 4), who after only starting the sport 6 months ago, tackled the grade 1, 2 and 3 levels for figure skating and managed to complete and pass all three exams! Jono says he practices three times per week and was first introduced to iceskating at his friend Iggy’s birthday party in January. Keep up the hard work, Jono.
The Clifton Senior Debating Team who won the 2019 Durban Coastal Debating League Final against Thomas More College.
Cade Cryer who played in the Lower South Coast Nomads Junior Golf Championship during the holidays. Cade was the overall Lower South Coast Nomads Junior Champ, with a solid performance at Margate Country Club, Port Shepstone Country Club and a particularly good round at Southbroom Country Club, shooting 2 under par.
Jarryd Walker who won the gold medal in the U16 section and the bronze in the U18 section at the KZN Surfski Championships that took place over a 22km course within the Durban Bay area.
Our Community Engagement Team who have been hard at work finding ways to raise money for various causes and charities. With SABMR being close to all of our hearts as our very own Robbie Eddles battles Leukaemia, the boys decided to do what they could to assist. In April we held a Civvies Day where R9481 was raised and the team organised a Night Market during Cultural D@ze that brought in R7000. This brings it to a total of R16 481 raised for SABMR! A fantastic job, gents! Our grateful thanks to the Clifton Community for their generosity during both of these drives. All funds raised from the latest Civvies Day will go to Project Rhino.
Cameos The Winter break has invigorated our College Afrikaans department. The staff have come back to school with innovative ideas and are including coding principals into their language lessons to further engage the boys. Through the use of coding concepts, the grade 9 boys are beefing up their knowledge of the Afrikaans Language and creating programs which will help to teach each other at the same time.
THANK YOU! We would like to thank our Clifton community for their contributions towards one of the 3 projects that ran during Cultural D@ze! Mrs Kriel delivered contributions to Principal Nhlanhla at Kwamasimamane this morning. She also popped in to see the pupils who all remember the Clifton Community Engagement boys that ‘gave’ them new shoes as part of the Blue Sky project.

Plans are well underway at Clifton for the biggest annual celebration that we hold at our school - Founders' Weekend! A highly anticipated event, the craft market on the Saturday (7 September) is extremely well supported.

Our Clifton Prep Choir and marimba group had a fantastic time on tour in the Cape. Besides the various performances they did, they also visited the Two Oceans Aquarium, Franschoek, Somerset West, enjoyed a lunch at Spier Wine Estate, and even saw a wonderful raptor display at Eagle Encounters. Their impromptu performance (with the Bidvest Wits Soccer Team) at the airport before take-off for Cape Town, has had hundreds of views on Facebook already! What fun!
It’s always fun to see what our ‘Red Ants’ get up to at school. When last did you make sandwiches with your friends at school and then get to eat them in class? The boys have also been busy making eco bricks, learning to write letters in shaving cream and playing hockey on their very own ’Astro!
Old Boys Congratulations to Eric Nairac (2007) on his engagement to Kath Huang. We wish you many years of happiness together.
Chad Dorkin (2016) is currently in the process of registering a non-profit, non-governmental organization called The Top Boy Initiative, and will be hosting two events on 10 and 31 August. Best wishes, Chad.
Will the Old Boys Basketball team be able to hold onto their undefeated reign at Founders’ Weekend 2019? Find out on 7 September! #FoundersWeekend
