The hospitality, as always, was exceptional. Congratulations to Murray Hall-Jones who racked up another century over the weekend.
Deputy Principal: Marketing Growing from a Red Ant into a Brown Ant I started my Clifton journey in grade R this year Hugged mom and dad goodbye (fist pump), the time was here I am a Red Ant at last! Sitting proudly in my Red Ant class. Yellow, red and blue, these were our groups I saw teachers clapping hands, and brightly coloured hoops We had air-conditioning and our own playground With bikes, a football field and a climbing wall – how cool does that sound? We have fished for sounds, written our names in foam And with clubs and sport, we never wanted to go home By June we knew our College brothers by name In our soccer matches with them we brought our ‘A’ game.
At Founders’ Weekend, the national anthem was our goal Singing in front of the whole school, standing straight as a pole Our parents videoed that for something called Facebook Mmmmm… perhaps like all the faces in my Red Ant books? The tug ‘o war was great, parents shouting and jumping, some staring Even the older boys with stubble and pimples were cheering We pulled our hardest, the rope was hot, the whistle blew We were the Red Army, we made sure everyone knew! When we walked in line to Music and PE We cleared a path, we’re Red Ants you see! Way cooler than Geoffrey the giraffe and Stan the seal After all Clifton Red Ants are the real deal! At the end of the year we will cheer Our shirts will change colour and mom may shed a tear. “What will Grade 1 be like?” I ask my mom and dad. Being a red ant is the best time I’ve ever had! Becoming a brown ant, wearing the famous khaki Will make the change fun and easy. On Saturday for the rugby I will be a green ant for the Springboks. Thank you Red Ant teachers, Grade R rocks! Cameos Pictured here is the Clifton Stayers Team who competed at the St Stithians Tournament. Noah Ditz and Simon Taylor were chosen for the Tournament Team. They finished in a very credible 4th place out of 20 of the top schools in the country. Congrats, gents!
Yadav Panchpersadh, Grade 4, took part in the KZN Development tournament (Karate), winning gold. This makes him number 1 in KZN for Kumite in his age group (U10). He has once again earned his KZN development colors for Karate. This is the third year in a row he has done so! Yadav also represented KZN in the South African Development tournament in Kumite (fighting), winning bronze.
The match between Clifton Prep Xl and Highbury was a tightly contested affair! Highbury, batting first, posted 170/5 in their 40 overs. A solid start by Joshua van Biljon (35) and Jason Adams (27) got the team off to a good start, and Clifton went into their last over needing 10 runs with only 1 wicket in hand. Samuel Sibande and Daniel Gibbs showed great determination at the end, winning the match for their team by hitting a great 6 and a 4 respectively, with just 1 ball to spare! It was an unbelievable and exciting ending to the Clifton Prep vs Highbury Procter-Richards match, with Clifton Prep Captain, Murray Hall-Jones reclaiming the Procter-Richards Trophy which Highbury had won at the beginning of the year. Well done, lads!

Deyaan Moodley has a cousin, Sianna, who is at Chase Grammar School in the UK. They have been reading a book about 'Flat Stanley'. Sianna made her very own Flat Stanley and sent it to Deyaan to photograph here in Durban. What fun to see Flat Stanley stopping in at Clifton during his travels!
The Grade 1 boys had a chance to flex their ‘big boy’ muscles at the Pinetown Gym. There was much bouncing, swinging, flipping and springing - all in one room! Who knew that exercise could be so much fun?

What a treat it was for our Prep boys to have a visit from Geoffrey the Giraffe and the team from East Coast Radio yesterday!
Danny Guiselli told the boys all about the East Coast Radio Toy Story and how we can bring a smile to a child's face this Festive Season. We are proud to be a part of this wonderful initiative where we get to donate brand new toys to disadvantaged children in hospitals and orphanages in KZN. A collection box is at the Lambert Road entrance to the school, and we challenge everyone to pop into ToysRUs, BabiesRUs, or any other toy store, and bring a new toy to drop off in the collection box. The children who will receive these toys may NEVER have owned a brand new toy themselves! Let's show the true Clifton heart and get that box overflowing!
Toys donated should be brand new and preferably chosen by your son.
“From the Side-lines with Nick Lambie” Keegan Pearce Interview: The man behind Hockey@Clifton 1: Tell us about your coaching and playing style? My coaching style derived from previous coaches that had impacted my playing style in my school career. My coaching is very player led and performance driven. To often, we as coaches dictate how players should play, but in theory, if you give them a bit of rope they have the opportunity to grow in their own space. The performance element must be there as I believe we all play sport to compete and in many instances, try and make a career out of it. I think coaching needs to be more than just about results, so the more we put emphasis on that the more the players will buy into the processes and principles, leading to the results taking care of themselves. We constantly try and challenge players to adapt and execute their skill set in specific situations through their own proactive approach rather than us being rigid in how we coach players. 2: Where did your love for hockey start? I think my love for hockey started pretty much when I picked up a hockey stick. I’ve loved hockey from day one, and my love for coaching came from the excitement of the tactical approach to managing and influencing a game.
3: What is your sports motto? You can’t go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are and change the ending. In a nutshell, sometimes things don’t go our way but I think sport is about constantly reassessing, re-evaluating, planning and having a growth mind-set that will keep you relevant and focused during your preparation and during competitive matches. 4: Tell us about the upcoming 2020 season and the tour to Europe? This is an exciting opportunity for us because I think our first team and U16 A-side next year are going to be really strong. We have a youthful junior program developing and we’ve had this current 1st XI together now for three years, so the boys in Matric next year would’ve played together for three years in the 1st XI. Hopefully it’s going to be one of our best years to come. The European tour is going to be a good sounding board as to where they are in relation to hockey standards in Europe. It also gives us two weeks together with the group to focus on key principles as well as the tactical and technical side of things. This will ultimately give the team the best chance of succeeding throughout the season. 5: If you could teach a sportsmen one thing, what would it be? Just the ability to adapt to change. I think human nature sees us back away from pressure situations. If I could sell one thing to a player, it would to not be rigid in your thinking. Throughout your career you will have different coaches, different bosses, all with different coaching styles and you are going to play with hundreds of players, all constantly adapting to change too. Versatility is the key to adapting and if you can manage that effectively whilst under pressure, you will succeed more times than you will fail.
