WELCOME TO THE SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION FORUM 2015 Organised by Climate Action in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)
Esteemed Colleagues, On behalf of the UN Environment Programme, Climate Action and the sponsors and partners of this year’s Sustainable Innovation Forum 2015 (SIF15), we take great pleasure in welcoming you here to Stade de France for two days of debate, discussion and forging new business partnerships. The shift in global momentum around COP21 has been palpable, as the final opportunity to limit warming within 2°C has galvanised the focus of cross sector stakeholders on the need to accelerate us towards to a sustainable, low carbon future. Over 50,000 people are present in Paris to influence the talks, representing one of the largest climate conferences ever organised. Now in its sixth year, SIF is recognised as the largest business-focused event that takes place during the annual Conference of Parties (COP). The event unites the three key stakeholder groups of Government, business and international NGOs to develop the ideas and partnerships required to drive innovative solutions for climate action. SIF15 will welcome more than 750 global delegates over two days to participate in high-level discussion and networking opportunities. We would like to thank our sponsors and partners that have generously supported SIF15, without which this event would not be possible. Alongside our speaker faculty of global thought leaders, these partners will be offering practical experiences of developing and implementing innovative projects and processes. During the past 42 years, UNEP has provided leadership and encouraged partnerships in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples. We hope that this event will serve to enhance this process as the need for urgent action on climate change is now a global imperative. We trust that you will find SIF15 stimulating and that it will enhance the opportunities available to your organisation in shaping a low carbon future. Thank you for joining us - we look forward to meeting and speaking with you over the next two days.

At CEiiA we see mobility as an ecosystem. In the centre there are people who want to move from one place to another. Around, there are a great number of mobility and infrastructures operators, the energy sector, and public entities. The mobi.me system allows people to make mobility decisions in real-time considering the cost, the time and the environmental impact of each option and to pay it altogether, in a single bill. In order to achieve this, mobi.me is capable of integrating multiple entities and systems. Therefore, mobi.me is capable of providing relevant information about mobility patterns and impacts for operational management and business intelligence. is putting energy efficiency first Energy efficiency is the most cost-effective way to decarbonize our economy, while helping to decouple GDP growth from energy use. One crucial area; the heating and cooling systems in buildings and industry, currently accounting for 40% of final energy consumption, holds so much untapped potential. The technologies needed to realize this potential are ready and available. By transitioning to district energy, a growing number of cities, including Dubai, Munich, Tokyo, Warsaw and even right here in Paris, are now leveraging the huge benefits of combined heat and power, waste-to-heat or simply redirecting surplus heat from industry that would otherwise disappear into thin air. nvironmental, social and governance (ESG) risk factors are considered in Moody’s ratings and research when such risks have material credit implications. Specifically, we capture ESG considerations into our long-term credit ratings when we believe they will affect the probability of default of a debt issuer or expected credit loss in the event of default, both of which are the primary focus of the Moody’s ratings system. With regard to our research, we highlight ESG issues that are a significant credit consideration to an industry, sector, or a specific entity. Recent examples include our assessment of global antibribery and corruption efforts, the impact of carbon-reduction policies on non-financial corporate sectors, and our assessment of drought risks on the
Moody’s reflects ESG considerations as part of our holistic assessment of credit risk for rated entities, and such considerations are explicitly scored factors in some of our rating methodologies. These include governance in US states, sovereign bond and banking methodologies, and environmental considerations in some of our utilities methodologies. However, to date, in most industry or sector methodologies, material ESG risks are captured in our assessment of other factors that are scored in those methodologies, such as business profile or financial strength. This follows the same approach as many other general risks that affect credit quality, but are not scored individually in a rating methodology. be mitigated by other factors – such as the financial strength of a given debt issuer – that reduce the credit risk of a particular ESG issue, and which typically form a more important part of our credit assessment. Additionally, the impact of ESG factors is not always clear-cut in terms of materiality, scale and timing. Often issuers have considerable operational and financial flexibility and a track record of adjusting to emerging ESG risks without them becoming material to credit quality. That said, the analysis of ESG risks would be enhanced with the benefit of greater ESG risk disclosure practices worldwide. This will lead to a more efficient and consistent assessment of these risks across borders and industries. Carbon Wealth www.carbonwealth.org Carbon Wealth is the inventor of SkyMining®, the process of literally mining pure carbon straight out of the atmosphere, and turning that carbon into a clean and renewable fuel that can replace fossil fuels and charcoal all over the world. The unique aspect of SkyMining® is that the resulting CO2-based fuel is cheaper than most fossil fuels and charcoal, yet highly profitable. This profitability is the much needed paradigm shift in dealing with climate change. SkyMining® is a holistic process that combines biology and technology; using the hyper-efficient CO2 pumps in fast-growing grass to extract carbon straight from the atmosphere, a large part of which is permanently stored in the ground. Our technology is then used to convert the carbon inside the grass itself into a Carbon Negative Fuel (CNF) that is clean and renewable — and that replaces both fossil fuels and charcoal to stop existing emissions and slow deforestation. The technology has successfully tested on an industrial scale, is massively scalable, and ready for global deployment — giving the world ‘something else to burn’ that will not add CO2 to the atmosphere. There is enough excess carbon in the sky to power the planet and replace all fossil fuels

Impossible Foods www.impossiblefoods.com Impossible Foods is leading the way to a secure and sustainable food system by creating irresistibly delicious meat and dairy products - directly from plants. Animal farming was a brilliant innovation thousands of years ago, but is an environmental disaster today. Occupying more than a third of the earth’s dry land, it uses more than a quarter of its fresh water and is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and the biggest cause of species extinction and biodiversity loss. Existing plant crops could meet all the world’s nutritional needs with a fraction of the environmental impact. But people will not give up the foods they love unless they have choices that are just as satisfying. Impossible Foods is developing new ways to create sustainable, affordable foods with all the nutritional value and the wonderfully complex flavours and textures of meat and dairy products - without using animals. Its first product, the Impossible burger, will be launched in 2016. The company's goal is to replace all foods traditionally derived from animals with uncompromising plant-based alternatives. Impossible Foods was founded in 2011 by Patrick Brown, M.D., Ph.D., a prominent research scientist and Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. Decarbonising the energy production is the number one challenge for any utility today. Vattenfall is committed to building between 400 and 600 megawatts of new wind power every year, and becoming Europe’s wind champion. But we believe that the energy challenge means far more than building climate-friendly power plants. Today, most of Europe’s fossil energy is consumed for transporting goods and people, as well as for heating homes and feeding industrial processes. There are huge potentials for energy efficiency gains and fossil-free solutions in these sectors.
F
rom the very beginning Vattenfall was created to solve the needs of society. Back then, focus was on electrification of homes, industries, and railways to transport goods. Building on a 120-year-long legacy of innovations and partnerships with industries and cities, our company runs a number of projects for a future society that relies less on fossil fuels.
ANOTHER WAVE OF ELECTRIFICATION Vattenfall is once again driving a wave of electrification – this time of personal

transport. We make it easier for car drivers to switch to electric cars by developing wireless charging; we build networks of fast charging stations and we offer smart charging solutions for small-scale businesses and cooperatives. In partnership with Enertrag, we constructed the first hybrid plant in the world that directly uses wind electricity to create hydrogen fuel. Together with Volvo and Stockholm Public Transportation, we are engaged in an EU co-financed demo project for testing fast charging and electric hybrid buses in Stockholm. The buses are so quiet that some of Sweden’s most prominent authors could read their poems to the bus riders on the first day of service. By 2050 cities will be responsible for three-quarters of the world’s energy use and related carbon emissions, making them key players in energy transition. Today we are developing district heating and cooling for Berlin and Amsterdam; and in Amsterdam we are managing one of the most used electric car charging networks in Europe. In Hamburg we are testing sustainable energy solutions and in Uppsala, Sweden, we will help the city reach its ambitious climate targets by biobased energy production.
But creating a low carbon dioxide future is also about setting the legislation, incentives and market rules that make new investments and solutions commercially attractive. Vattenfall’s long history of operating on Europe’s energy markets has made our company a centre of knowledge in a vast array of energy issues with a strong capability of analysing how policies affect markets, all the way down to the machines that produce the energy. We are, as we always have been, willing to cooperate with customers, companies, cities and countries to realise our common ambitions of a low carbon future. Magnus Hall has been President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vattenfall since 1 October 2014. Prior to this Mr. Hall held many positions within the Holmen Group, serving as CEO between 2004-2014, and currently holds several board memberships including the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise http://corporate.vattenfall.com

ICELAND – TOWARDS A CARBON FREE SOCIETY With 85 per cent of the country’s primary energy needs met by renewable hydro and geothermal resources, Iceland is a world leader in renewable energy. Innovation in energy efficency, and further impetus towards renewable energy in the transport sector, aim to move Iceland even closer to being a carbon free society.

celand’s successful utilisation of renewable hydro and geothermal resources in recent decades has contributed substantially to an increase in the quality of life. The expertise and technology developed for economical and sustainable harnessing of natural sources of energy has become a valuable export for the country, assisting other nations that might have similar resources. This is accompanied by a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as green energy has replaced fossil fuel. Utilisation of geothermal resources for space heating started as far back as the 1930s, but the effort was greatly accelerated by the global oil crisis of the early 1970s. Today, almost 90 per cent of Iceland’s houses and buildings are heated by natural hot water; and the geothermal water is also used for melting snow, outdoor swimming pools, greenhouses, fish farming and algae production, to give
climateactionprogramme.org
"Today, almost 90 per cent of Iceland’s houses and buildings are heated by natural hot water." some examples. The use of renewables for heating in Iceland is already saving 7 per cent of GDP, or the equivalent of US$3000 per capita every year, as stated in the May 2014 newsletter from Geothermal ERA-NET.
FROM FOSSIL FUEL TO RENEWABLES Iceland’s energy use per capita is also among the highest in the world, as over 80 per cent of all electricity generated is sold to energy-intensive industries. Today Iceland has hydroelectric power stations with a total installed capacity of nearly 1986 MW and geothermal power stations with a total installed capacity of 665 MW. This situation makes Iceland especially suitable for revolutionising transport. The number of fully electric cars has been rising fast (600 per cent since January 2014) and hybrid cars are even more popular. The energy companies in Iceland have been developing the network of fast charging stations. The capital area now boasts a number of tollfree fast charging stations.
A FULLY SUSTAINABLE VALUE CHAIN Iceland is also focusing on one of the country’s main export industry and economic pillars: fishing and production of quality sustainable seafood. Recent efforts to minimise the carbon footprint of the fishing industry have resulted in innovation for increased energy efficiency. New technology companies involved in research and development have been formed, with the goal of making further reductions in emissions from the industry. Resource optimisation in an entire value chain is the ultimate aim of the research activity. Iceland is striving to make the whole value chain of the fishing industry as environmentally sustainable as possible, from sustainable harnessing of the ocean resources to the whole operations of the fishing fleet and the seafood processing. www.invest.is

As the Swedish winner of the WWF Global Earth Hour City Challenge, Gothenburg is ranked among the world’s top five sustainable cities in 2015. The competition was entered by 160 cities, and what most impressed the jury about Gothenburg were the city’s ambitious and innovative climate strategies. In the pursuit of being a sustainable city, open to the world, Gothenburg is the first city in the world to issue green bonds and continuously strives to reduce citizens’ consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions.
T
he jury also took into account Gothenburg’s more than 70 city actions taken against climate change, and the many collaborative efforts with academia, industry and other cities. One of these successful collaborations is now turning the focus to sustainable transport: the cooperative venture ElectriCity. One important milestone achieved is Gothenburg’s first electric bus route, run exclusively on renewable fuels and so clean and quiet it can even drive indoors. “ElectriCity and route 55 are concrete proof of how Gothenburg is being developed into a denser, more sustainable and open city with attractive public spaces and a rich urban life,” says the mayor of Gothenburg Anneli Hulthén.

SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT: EMISSION-FREE BUS LINE BRINGS GOTHENBURG TO THE FOREFRONT
"Running on electricity from wind power and hydropower, the buses are emission-free." and hydropower, the buses are emissionfree. They run between two science parks, through the centre of Gothenburg. They are completely quiet and pick up passengers indoors. The buses run on batteries that are quickly recharged at the terminal stops. Also, passengers can charge their phones and use wi-fi on board. “The project demonstrates our ambition and strategy to attract expertise and investment that help reduce environmental impact and develop collaboration between authorities, industry and academia,” says Anneli Hulthén. Among the 14 players involved in ElectriCity are the city of Gothenburg, Volvo Group, Chalmers University of Technology, the Swedish Energy Agency, Business Region Göteborg, the Västra Götaland Region and Göteborg Energi.
Running until 2018, the project will entail further efforts to increase the attraction of public transport through developing, testing and demonstrating new, sustainable solutions. One forward-looking measure in the striving for this goal is that SKr10 million have been earmarked for open innovation. This means that ElectriCity offers companies and research institutes a unique opportunity to develop and test new, smart solutions for attractive and sustainable travel. www.greengothenburg.com
