Making the Most of Your Yard

elcome to our February edition. In these coming months we are going to do a series called “Making the Most of Your Yard.” Whether we are featuring a small to moderate-sized landscape as the one in this issue, or a much larger yard as the one we will be featuring next month, regardless of their size, the goal is always to make the most of the space. If it is a front yard the emphasis is on curb appeal and mobility from street to front door. If it is the backyard, as this month, the goal is one of function/entertainment/relaxation and beauty. The emphasis may differ from front to back but the goal is the same - making the most of the space. With each client the “how to do this,” varies making the jobs interesting, but the end goal always unites them. With this month I want to show a larger “before” picture so that you can appreciate what a big change one decision can make. The clients, Mike and Betsy, already had some discussion prior to my arrival – they had made the “big decision.” They wanted more patio space for entertaining and decided the best means to do that was to remove the plum tree in the upper left 10
BEFORE planter and put their spa in its place. That was a good decision, the best one they could have made given the limited space they had to work with. Aside from the messiness of the plum tree, its size was overwhelming the left side of the yard making what space that was available appear and feel smaller than it actually was. For us to be able to move the spa to the plum’s location we needed more space. To create that, we needed to move the block wall out to the edge of the patio. Since we would need to handle each block, making it a fair amount of labor, it was a great opportunity to update the block wall to a new look. However, if we kept the same block and just purchased the extra we needed to expand it out we would be easy on the pocket book. The decision was theirs. They decided for a new look, which I was very happy with. I did not like the existing block

wall knowing that nicer selections existed. If a block wall is somewhere in the “back forty” and I have space in front of it to screen it partially then the style does not matter, it’s more a question of structure and strength. However, this block wall was completely part of the “interior view” of the space we were trying to recreate. Once we decided upon the new block we needed to discuss the extended patio. With any patio extension matching the existing concrete cannot not be easily done. Therefore, I normally recommend using a different material, such as flagstone or pavers. Betsy desired a more modern look and I liked the stability of pavers if lighter weight furniture is to be placed on it (flagstone can have uneven surfaces). We selected a paver called Artisan Slate Positano. It was the perfect choice for the existing colors in the patio, being shades of tan and charcoal. However, it was too perfect, the colors were identical so we decided to add an accent color to offset the new patio a bit. By mixing in another color scheme FROM THE SAME series of pavers (each series normally has two to five color schemes) we could draw the eye making it, a “go to place.” I want to point this out because it opens up so many color combinations. Provided you stay within the same series, it’s a “fine tuning” that is really only available to paver hardscapes. And while it can be the ultimate in fine tuning, it can also be a Pandora’s box and give you a major headache trying to figure it out. In general, the color combinations that are available from the manufacturer are pretty good. We did this only because the pavers and the existing concrete colors matched too well. Now, let’s talk a bit more about the wall. There are basically two ways of doing walls: cinder block walls that you finish with veneer, cultured stone or stucco, which are very nice, though more expensive than stackable block walls. Our clients opted to go with a stackable block wall. Together we selected Brisa, a stackable block that is not as refined as veneer or cultured stone, but it’s nice and half the cost. Brisa was a vast improvement over the old wall they had been looking at for the past 10 years. In addition to the wall we needed to make steps to access the spa as well as create a walkway to it. We used the same block and caps to make the steps and the same pavers for the walkway to the spa. This completed the hardscape giving the yard an upper-end finish at a reasonable cost.
Plants were next. With the pool taking about 65 percent of the yard, you can see that the space for plants was limited. Therefore, plant selection was critical and we needed to get the most out of each plant’s species (bloom time, fragrance and limited size) all the while keeping the yard low maintenance - not too much to ask, right? Upon completion both Mike and Betsy, myself and the landscape staff, were happy with the job. We continue to remain good friends and it is a pleasure for me to feature their yard this month; they will be pleasantly surprised. Gardeners, now is a good time to plant cool weather vegetables: spinach, chard, lettuce etc. I would stay away from broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts as I don’t think there is enough time for them to develop out before we start getting warm. I would wait till March before planting tomatoes or squash or build mini greenhouses for them in case we get frost. Until next time – Good Gardening.

Clutter not only affects your ability to be able to locate items in your home in a timely manner, but according to www.brainfit.com, it also can affect your mental state as well. One way to begin the process is to categorize your possessions into the following categories:
