NEW PARKING AT UNION COLLEGE
Wednesday, September 5, 2012| Issue 87.1
Is parking on campus giving you a headache? Or, rather, a foot ache? On-campus parking has rarely been more confusing. The construction zones caused by the new math and science
and Advent Source buildings have greatly minimized parking availability. However, stay optimistic! The plan is that, by January 2013, Advent Source will be completed and 35 more parking spots will open up. Most of these will be behind the Don Love Building.
Look at the map for alternate parking if your usual spot has been taken. Unfortunately, parking rules still apply. Tickets can and will be given out to those who park in zones other than those listed on their parking passes.
“I fell off a roof one time.” Smiling, Brandon showed me the wicked scar under his arm. I stared, forgetting about my chai tea latte. Brandon and I met up at Starbucks, and Josh Marshall though he wasn’t sure at first why we were gathering, this was the first story he told. After I asked a few questions, his adventurous became apparent. As if the rooftop tumble wasn’t harrowing enough, Brandon said he wants to go skydiving. “I like biking . . . sports . . .” I wondered if Brandon enjoyed
any sedentary activities like I do. “Oh, and video games,” he added. I breathed a sigh of relief. For twenty minutes, I learned about Brandon’s life. He was raised in Rhode Island but spent the past four years living in Oregon. A week before coming to Union, he moved to Texas. “What brought you to Union?” I queried. “The IRR program. But the people and environment are nice too,” he answered. Aside from shrugging off scars and being totally chill, Brandon has a “side-passion” for cars and physical and mental challenges. Halfway
through my latte, he shared his dreams. “I’d like to live in Australia awhile, do missionary work . . . and be in a band.” I nodded while typing and asked, “I know it’s early in the school year, but what has been the best experience so far?” He didn’t think twice about his reply: “Definitely the Mumford and Sons concert.” Find Brandon around campus for details about his falling experience or about his dream car, a Subaru WRX.

Preview Project Impact
Every year at Union College, students and faculty come together on the day of Project Impact to serve others in their surrounding community. Over the past 32 years, Tim LeBard Project Impact has grown from the original Project Brush, a student-led project that painted houses for the disabled and the elderly. Last year, over 70% of the student body participated in a variety of activities that ranged from painting and cleaning to helping prepare bikes for kids who couldn’t afford one. I managed to catch up with Jayme Anderson, the Project Impact coordinator, to discuss what organizations students would be working with this year. People’s City Mission, Kids Against Hunger, MAD DADS, and Red Cross are only a

It is safe to say that Project Impact will present yearlong service opportunities for students. With all that said, my attempt to acquire a leak about the design of the shirts was, sadly, unsuccessful. What I can tell you is that the designers of the shirt are Devi Halim and Brittney Lippincott, and that you definitely want to snag one for yourself. All you have to do is come to the clock tower on Thursday at 8 a.m. prepared to experience the joy that comes along with helping others. Who would want to miss out on that? Campus Ministering
Campus Ministering: These are the two words that completely sum up what the goal is for the year. Our mission and vision for the year is to empower Union Ricky Melendez College students to minister both to the campus and to the Lincoln community. We no longer want to be known as Campus Ministries; instead, an entire school that ministers. We want this campus to have a second upper room experience, praying for God’s Spirit to fill the students and staff here at Union. We want this school to be the spiritual epicenter of the Lincoln community, leading those in need to Jesus. We want to be mistaken for Jesus. We want this campus to be the hands and feet of Jesus Himself by creating the opportunities around campus for students to be precisely this. Get involved. If you’re a person ready to do big things for God, there are amazing opportunities for you on campus and through campus ministries. If you come up with something that we don’t have going on already, come in and start it yourself. Dream big. Be a part of “Campus Ministering”, a campus whose sole purpose is to reach those who need Jesus.

Fall Television Shows This fall, we have been anticipating the new school year along the return of some of our favorite television shows. Everyone is hyped up about what’s going to happen next, Amber Alas especially the jaw-dropping season finales. The ABC television show Grey’s Anatomy had an intense eighth season finale that left many viewers in tears and in shock. “I couldn’t believe what happened in the finale,” said nursing major Ruby Ruano, “it was full of so many outrageous surprises and it ended with unfinished business. I can’t wait for it to start this fall!” Grey’s Anatomy is full of drama in love and medical emergencies. Catch the premiere September 27th on ABC. We all love the dramatic love stories or the suspense of a cold case, but every now and then it’s fun to watch a reality show where talented singers give their very best--which
Discover Lincoln
There are many new and exciting things to be explored when you get thrown into a new environment. I know what you’re thinking, “How did I end up in the beautiful MidRuby Ruano west capital city of Nebraska?” Throughout the year we’ll try to cover as many unique and fun places around Lincoln as possible, as well as give you helpful insights on what the ‘Good Life’ is really about. So, what are some helpful things you should know? One of the most important things you should be aware of is that you are in one of the biggest college football cities in the country. The red “N” flags represent the much-loved University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) football team, the Huskers. If you haven’t heard about the team yet, get ready to be bombarded with local Husker lovers.
Aside from awesome ASB events that will be available during the year, there are many awesome places that Lincoln has to offer. If the outdoors is what you are after, check out the 128 miles worth of trails around the city, one of the largest in the country. There will be snow. You may want to avoid the thought for as long as you can, so enjoy the outdoors and all it has to offer—now. There are a few lakes to keep cool at anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours away, and camping sites are always an easy find. As for the cuisine, the options really are endless—from the common fast food places to sit down restaurants, Lincoln also offers great mom-and-pop places. Keep a lookout for the latest places and events to check out. What’s your favorite hangout spot? Post to our Facebook or tweet #DiscoverLincoln and tag @ClocktowerASB. You could be published!
doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always good, but it is always entertaining. The X-Factor is a reality show where thousands of people try to compete for the grand prize: a multi-million-dollar recording contract. Contestant’s fates will be in the hands of the fans and the marvelous judges: Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, LA Reid and Simon Cowell. The X-Factor is returning with their second season September 12th and 13th on FOX. “I actually watched last season and I liked it better than American Idol. Plus, they have my favorite judge, Simon!” said Olivia May. There’s a show for everyone’s taste, from comedy to on-the-edge-of-my-seat suspense. The one thing all these different shows have in common is bringing us students to relax. Just because summer is over doesn’t mean we can’t kick back with a new episode. What’s your favorite TV show? DIVISION NEWS
The Curious Experience of Being a Freshman Katelyn Kovalski
I am a freshman—more specifically, I am a painfully shy freshman. I set foot on the campus of Union College for the first time three weeks ago, when I left the safety of my parent’s minivan into the awkward semi-adulthood that is fresh-
man year. My first tastes of Union have been intriguing, to say the least. Never before have I been
If you were a musical instrument, what would you be, and why? Jessica Perrone – Violin, because its musical tone goes after the longing mystery which is what my personality constantly searches for. Adam Neep – Kazoo, because they make people laugh. Jen Carlson – Acoustic guitar, because I’m low key. Barbie Whalen – Vibraphone, because it’s a unique instrument and I’m unique. Emily Severs – Violin, because the violin goes with so many instruments, and I go with so many people. Also, it can be whiny, and so can I. Devon Kittleson – Tuba, because it sounds funny. Anna Coridan – Piano, because it’s beautiful and it brings joy to people. Caleb Pongo – Xylophone, because they’re colorful.
bear hugged on the first day of classes by an enthusiastic Vice President of Enrollment, nor warned of killer squirrels. As far as I know, I am the only South Carolinian on this campus, and I find Nebraska to be severely lacking in decently made sweet tea and the use of the word “y’all.” Since the day I arrived, I have experienced a wide range of emotions—from fear of meeting new people, to the excitement of forming new friendships and curiosity at what’s to come. Now that I’m a few weeks into the school year, I’m beginning to adjust. When fears and insecurities discourage me, I simply remember that God led me to Union. He is helping me conquer the shyness and awkwardness of being a freshman in a new place, and He will be by my side through every difficult and joyful part of this new experience.
One on One: Ryan Perry With Carl Dupper
This year, Union College breathed a breath of fresh air into the Health and Human Performance division with the addition of Tennessee man Ryan Perry. Last Wednesday, Carl Dupper I had the privilege to sit down with this mystery man and hear a little of his story, his plans for intramural sports, and his love for the Atlanta Falcons. Carl Dupper: What brought you to Union? Ryan Perry: The opportunity to work at the college level. I was also very excited to work with the gymnastics team and I like my new hours. It gives me a little more time in the mornings to spend with my wife and three kids. CD: What is your favorite sport? RP: Team sport—softball. Individual sport—probably badminton. CD: How are you and your family adjusting to life here at Union?
RP: So far so good. Everyone here has been very friendly. CD: As the new intramural director, how do you plan on improving the intramural program? Any immediate changes you’re looking to make? RP: I think first year is going to be a lot of evaluation: seeing where the intramural program is at and making adjustments. CD: Are there any changes you are already looking to make? RP: Well the only major change so far is... (This is the abbreviated version of this interview. To hear the rest of the interview with Union’s new southern gentleman, visit the Clocktower’s Facebook page and click the audio file titled “One on One, Ryan Perry.” You’ll hear about the new plans for intramural jerseys, the Gymnaires’ plans to go to the Bahamas, and much more.) SPORTS
The official NFL season is starting tonight at 7:30 CDT! With the fact in mind that an 80-inch television gleams in the Student Center, it’s time to decide where to watch the Tyler Ellis game (and purchase the necessary snacks for optimal viewing experience. I recommend a large cheese pizza and 2-liter root beer from Cooper’s Corner for only $9.99! Tonight’s match-up is between the current Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants, and the four-time Super Bowl champions and once-upon-a-time “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys. As much as I have loved hating the Cowboys most of my life, I find myself rooting for them in this game. For many years, the Dallas Cowboys were the team to hate because they were so good. But this year, in order to earn back the respectful hatred of their American viewers, the Cowboys need to regain their strength. A few setbacks plague the Cowboys, starting with Dez Bryant, Dallas’ first round pick in 2010. On top of the fact that his performance has been sub-par since being chosen, he was arrested on July 16 for allegedly striking his mother. Dallas imposed strict guidelines on Bryant, including midnight curfew and bi-weekly counseling. A large portion of the team’s success sits on Bryant’s shoulders.
Peyton Manning Joins the Broncos
The biggest story this offseason was Peyton Manning’s departure from Indianapolis to Denver. As soon as this news spread, a Broncos fan I was chatting with said the Broncos Joe Hofmann were now guaranteed a trip to the Super Bowl. Now, slow your roll, pony (no pun intended)! Peyton Manning is a great quarterback, but here are three reasons why the Broncos won’t make it to the Super Bowl: 1) Manning has had three neck surgeries in 19 months and missed the entire 20112012 season. In other words, Peyton won’t come out blazing like he did in 2004. He’s played decently in the preseason, but it is just preseason. Manning is also playing with an unknown group of wide receivers, not the proven veterans he was used to with Indy. 2) Peyton is joining a team that was first in rushing yards and last in passing yards,

Nostalgia: The Days of Hating the Cowboys

The Giants aren’t without flaws either. They will need to perform at a higher level than they did last year if they are going to make it to the Super Bowl for the third time in six years, as their playoff qualification relied heavily on favors from other teams.
Watch tonight to find out which team will win. Assuming Bryant plays to his potential, count me in for a Dallas victory.
something Manning can turn around, but their defense was only 18th in stopping opponents’ passing game and 22nd in stopping opponents’ rushing. I’m not a math major, but I’m pretty sure Manning is only playing on the offense, and defense is where the Broncos need the most help. 3) The AFC West isn’t an easy division. Last year, the Division was decided through a tiebreak, with the Broncos finishing first with an 8-8 record, the same record as the Chargers and Raiders. This season will be an even closer race, and the Broncos’ schedule isn’t much help. I could be wrong, but Broncos fans should be cautiously optimistic.
