INTRODUCTION BY DAVID TEEVAN, FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
Welcome to the 14th annual Clonmel Junction Festival. We hope that you will enjoy the selection of shows and other activities that we have gathered together this year. The programme is, as always, attempting to present a broad selection of performance work from a variety of genre, which we feel will be of interest to the community here in Clonmel and attract visitors to the town. We hope that in this we are successful and as always we welcome feedback from the public in person or through the myriad of social media outlets we engage with. We are immensely proud of the Festival Choir and the Junction Joes who are working alongside Irish and international professional artists creating new work for the festival this year and excited about the many visiting shows that we will be presenting. Our Primary School Project this year is PopUpPeople and the characters and stories created by the 12 classes will literally be popping up everywhere, so keep an eye out for them during June when they begin taking to the streets. The theme of this year’s festival, which runs through much of the work selected, is “Perspectives” and I hope that the work you see offers you, as it has done for me, the possibility of seeing the world in a new and richer way. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the board of the festival for their tireless work and to the many friends, volunteers, supporters, patrons, sponsors and of course the artists, who contribute to making this celebration of arts and creativity happen here in Clonmel each year. Finally we would like to mention in remembrance Anthony “Slacks” Ryan, a core team member with Junction Festival since it began in 2001, who passed away over the winter. He will be sadly missed but always fondly remembered.

ORFEO AND EURYDICE Clonmel Junction Festival is delighted to present a semi staged performance of “Orfeo and Eurydice” with German countertenor Roland Schneider, as Orfeo, and Irish soprano, Jennifer Davis singing Eurydice. The Junction Festival Choir, now in its fifth year, and The Carolan Ensemble, will be led by Austrian conductor Elisabeth Attl, who is returning for her third visit to the Festival. The performance will be introduced by Lyric FM presenter Liz Nolan.
OPERA Date: Fri 4th July Time: 8.30pm Duration: approx 85 mins Admission: €25/€22 Venue: Old St Mary’s Church
Composer: C.W. Glück Conductor: Elizabeth Attl Orfeo: Roland Schneider Eurydice: Jennifer Davis Amor: Mimi Lane Chorus: The Junction Festival Choir Orchestra: The Carolan Ensemble Narrator: Liz Nolan Producer: Theresia Guschlbauer
First performed in Vienna in 1762, Glück’s opera, based on the myth of Orpheus, who ventures into the underworld to retrieve his wife Eurydice, takes the audience on an emotional and musical journey and is the first of Glück’s “reform” operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a “noble simplicity” in both music and drama. By far Glück’s most popular and renowned work, “Orfeo and Eurydice” was very influential on subsequent German opera, inspiring works such as Mozart’s “Magic Flute”. In “Orfeo and Eurydice”, the orchestra and choir are integral to the dramatic plot and it includes some of the most delightful and dramatic music of the mid-classical period. This promises to be a memorable evening not to be missed.
“An operatic journey through grief, love and despair.”
This project is supported by Commissioning Patrons: Bill & Joan Roth, Dennis Slizys, Jay Teevan and Binchy Solicitors.

A choreography of the limbs, a performance spectacular if ever there was one, yet it is modestly contained and understated.

Michele Cafaggi, Italy’s finest Bubble Magician, brings his delightful new show Omino (little man), to Clonmel for its Irish premiere. Cafaggi’s work is a marvelous blend of classical Italian clowning and bubbles….. a cacophony of soap and silliness.
Written and performed by Michele Cafaggi Music by David Baldi
Omino is haunted by bad weather, it even rains when he is in the house! However he soon discovers that each object can be used to create bubbles and magical surprises.
Wherever he goes, Omino carries the rain and so, even at home, he takes an umbrella. When he sneezes, bubbles jump out of his mouth, slowly invading the entire room. Tiny and giant bubbles, frothy and transparent bubbles. – Vivimilano.it
Omino recounts how on his travels he must continually deal with the emergency of bad weather but when all seems lost the magic of bubbles and the power of the imagination intervene to give him the strength to go on. A show that promises to thrill audiences and delight children of all ages.

SILENT EXPOSURE
THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM DESPARD HEMPHILL (1816–1902) This exhibition showcases the work of one of Ireland’s pioneering photographers, William Despard Hemphill (1816-1902).
VISUAL ART / PHOTOGRAPHY Date: 4th July to 31st July Time: Open daily 9.30am – 1pm & 2pm – 6pm (including weekends). Last admission 45 mins before closing. Admission: Free Venue: The Main Guard, Sarsfield Street, Clonmel Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ themainguard
A well-respected medical practitioner in Victorian Clonmel, Dr Hemphill experimented with the latest photographic techniques, mastered the art of stereoscopic (3D) imaging and won several prestigious international awards. At a time when photography was a complex, expensive and sometimes dangerous pursuit, he was among the first to photograph in detail antiquities such as the Rock of Cashel and Holycross Abbey, as well as castles at Mitchelstown, Lismore, Cahir, Kilmanahan and Shanbally. He was welcome into some of the ‘big houses’ around Clonmel, including Newtown Anner, Marlfield, Knocklofty, Castletown Cox and Curraghmore, where there was considerable interest in amateur photography. Hemphill’s images – portraits, still life, architecture and scenery – are records of immense historical value. They are also sublime works of art, inviting us to reflect on temporal beauty, artistic rendering and photography as interpretation.

POP UP PEOPLE
2D FIGURES IN A 3D WORLD A primary school project for 4th Class pupils.
The PopUpPeople project involved 4th class school children creating cut out figures using paper, scissors and simple line drawing. These were used to devise visual stories using everyday objects from the classroom, which can be viewed on the festival website.
Designed and facilitated by: Astrid Walsh. Artist’s assistant: Aoife McGrath Blogger: Wolfgang Amadeus Helnwein Participating Schools: Presentation Clonmel, St-Mary’s Clonmel, St-Peter & Paul’s Clonmel, Ballyneale NS, Clerihan NS, Powerstown NS, Ardfinnan NS, Rathkeevin NS, StOlivers Clonmel, Gaelscoil Cluan Meala, Ballymacarbry NS
The participating classes also had access to a blog, written by Wolfgang Helnwein, which followed the classroom experience and enabled them to see what the other schools were creating. Pupils were also invited to send copies of their cut out figures to relatives and friends in distant places, with a view to getting back new ‘adventures’ and stories for the blog. Likewise, the public will be encouraged to ‘adopt’ a figure and send back photographs of their character in exotic locations or quirky situations.
About the artist: Astrid Walsh grew up in Dublin and now lives in Cork. She is a Fine Art graduate from the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design. Drawing is a fundamental ingredient in all her varied work, which includes video, site specific installations and on-line projects. The PopUpPeople Project emerged from her own experiments and a whole new dimension has opened up for her through the work and exchange with the children.
As well as their on-line life, leading up to the festival, the figures will pop up in various street and shop locations, creating an unexpected trail throughout the town. Look out for these figures as they pop up around the town!
