WELCOME...
TO THE CARE SHOW 2019 WELCOME to The Care Show, the UK’s most established social care event with the aim of uniting the sector and improving care across the country. I would like to say thank you to all speakers and partners who have helped create an engaging programme to highlight great case studies of best practice happening within the sector. Thank you to each of our exhibitors and sponsors who without them, we would not have this fantastic event and thank you to you, our delegates, the reason we love to create these events. We appreciate your time is precious and hope across the next two days you find something new to improve your business, increase the level of care you can offer or create new relationships with your peers. This year has seen plenty of events; with new care providers opening their doors, the number of outstanding care providers increasing, the loss of some key providers and of course, Government talks about recruitment, funding and Brexit. This years Care Show focuses on a number of different topics to help you make the most for your business, help improve the environments you work in and boost your CQC ratings by helping you deliver better care. With 5 theatres bursting with
MICHAEL CORBETT Event Manager, The Care Show
educational content, we are confident there is something for everyone. I am delighted to welcome the UKHCA and all their members to the show as we have created a partnership to help boost the focus on domiciliary care and create an opportunity for more home care providers to come together and learn from each other. New for 2019 is our partnership with the STORM Care Inner Circle who have created an amazing digital community and we are delighted to work with them to create an educational programme which offers an engaging hands-on conference for managers across the country. With a growing community, we are also delighted to support The Care Workers Charity and The Care Badge at show. Please meet with The Care Workers Charity team on stand C61 and purchase your Care Badge for your teams by speaking with any of the stands supporting badges on their stand. We hope every delegate, speaker, exhibitor and sponsor attending the Care Show makes the most of this excellent opportunity to network, share problems with possible resolutions and gain clarity on complex solutions. We hope you will take away great ideas across the next two days to implement into your business.

WELCOME TO UKHCA CONFERENCE 2019 Welcome to this year’s UKHCA Conference and thank you for joining today’s event. This year’s conference marks the beginning of an exciting new venture, as we have joined forces with CloserStill Media to bring together the UKHCA Conference as an integral part of the Care Show, the UK’s largest event for the Care Community. Our partnership with CloserStill Media means that we have been able to give access to the conference free of charge, and can extend the programme over two days for the first time. Delegates to the conference can also benefit from access to the wider Care Show, which showcases innovations, best practice and technological solutions for care. The first day of the conference is exclusively open for UKHCA members and focuses on the wider policy agenda and opportunities for shaping the future for homecare. We are also incorporating our annual members' meeting (including the AGM) into the conference programme for the first day. This will offer an opportunity to hear UKHCA's plans for representing and supporting members and how you can get involved in our work to promote the benefits and value of homecare. The AGM will include elections for the UKHCA board and debate of any motions submitted by members. The second day of the UKHCA Conference 2019 is open to all Care Show delegates and focuses on supporting homecare providers in promoting quality care practice and running a sustainable care service. Across both days the conference offers a strong programme of talks and discussions on those issues homecare providers of all types, sizes, or stage of business maturity, tell us are important to them: Workforce; Financial sustainability; Regulation; Quality, innovation and best practice; and Public perception of homecare. For our keynote speaker on the first day, we are delighted to welcome Camilla Cavendish. Camilla is an award-winning
6 | #careshow19
JANE TOWNSON CEO, United Kingdom Homecare Association
journalist, who writes for the Financial Times. She was Director of Policy for the former Prime Minister, David Cameron, and now sits in the House of Lords as an independent peer. Camilla conducted the Cavendish Review into “Healthcare Assistants and Support Workers in the NHS and Social Care Settings” and has a long-standing interest in the care workforce. Camilla will be talking about the themes in her new book “Extra Time – Ten Lessons for an Ageing World”. Also speaking is Tamsyn Hyatt, Digital and Communications Strategist at the Frameworks Institute, a non-profit think tank with expertise in how best to communicate with the public to achieve social change. As a sector, we know that high quality lifestyle support and homecare can extend healthy lifespan and enhance quality of life for people; delay or prevent admission to hospital or residential care; and save money for the health and care system. Tamsyn’s session will challenge us to think about how we can frame our efforts to influence public and political perceptions on social care to deliver greater impact, in order to achieve the much needed, and long awaited, changes in public policy to reflect this more effectively. We are also pleased that Kate Terroni, new Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the sector regulator, the Care Quality Commission, will be joining us to talk about improving care quality and her priorities for CQC. In addition to the speeches above, we will be hosting two expert panel discussions. The first chaired by UKHCA’s Policy Director, Colin Angel, will be exploring Shaping the future of homecare with: Max Wurr, Policy and Communications Director, City and County Healthcare; Niall Dickson, CEO, NHS Confederation;
Sarah Pickup, Deputy CEO, Local Government Association; Simon Hewett-Avison, Assistant Director of Services, Independent Age; and Yvonne Hignell, Managing Director, Bluebird Care. The second expert panel will focus on opportunities for Making homecare a career of choice. Chaired by Neil Eastwood, author of Saving Social Care, the panellists for this discussion are: David Chalk, Managing Director, Windrush Care; Karla Zimpel-Leal, UKRI Innovation Fellow, University of Sheffield; Karolina Gerlich, CEO, NACAS; Martin Jones, CEO, Home Instead Senior Care; and Roger Booker, Managing Director, Direct Health Group. Day 2 of the conference features workshops on technology in homecare; safeguarding; the national careworker recruitment campaign; running a sustainable homecare business; understanding consumer law; working with the NHS; preparing for a CQC inspection; and considerations for purchasing a learning management system. We hope you enjoy hearing from the speakers and connecting with other committed care providers from across the sector. The conference, and the wider Care Show, is an excellent
opportunity to share your experiences and ideas on how we can work together, so that homecare can continue to support people to live independently and well in their own homes. With this in mind, UKHCA is hosting a networking lounge area for members, which is located adjacent to the UKHCA Conference theatre, so please do use this facility between conference sessions and visiting exhibitors’ stands. Finally - many thanks to our sponsors Towergate Insurance, who are the Gold Sponsor; and Birdie and My Learning Cloud who are the Silver Sponsors for the event, without whose support the conference in its current form would not be possible. Their details are in this Care Show guide and we encourage you to visit their stands to find out how they might be able to help your homecare service deal with some of the opportunities and challenges that will be discussed during the day. As this is the first year of our new format for the UKHCA Conference, we would greatly welcome feedback on any aspect of the event – before, during and after - so that we can build this into our planning for next year.

WELCOME FROM THE UKHCA CONFERENCE PARTNER
Dear Delegates, On behalf of everyone at Towergate Insurance, welcome to the 2019 UKHCA Care Show at the NEC, Birmingham. Towergate Caring Professions Division have been a proud partner of UKHCA since 2012 and are delighted to be sponsoring the Care Show this year. Our division have specialised in insurance for the care sector for over 35 years, and we pride ourselves on really understanding your sector, enabling us to deliver the insurance and risk management solutions that you actually need. We are delighted to have the opportunity to meet so many of you today, some who we’ve known for a number of years, and some who we will be meeting for the first time today. We take our role as an insurance broker very seriously and see ourselves as a risk management partner to our homecare clients, not just their insurance provider. Our approach is to
spend the time needed to get to know about your business: how it operates; where your income comes from; what contracts you have in place; and what’s important to you. We then use this to offer our insight and guidance to give individual advice about the types and levels of cover you need to protect you and your business. We work with industry specialists in valuations, business interruption, health & safety, driver profiling, cyber and protection to bring you a full suite of risk management tools, designed to help you to protect your business. We hope you enjoy the conference and look forward to seeing you. Yours sincerely, Carolyn Baker-Mellor Head of Care, Towergate Caring Professions

Staff have more time to spend with residents
Increases staff retention
Jennifer Read, Registered Manager at Catherine Miller House, says, “One of the things we worried about was, ‘Would staff be able to use the system?’. We’ve been using Mobile Care Monitoring for three months now, and not only has the system been excellent for staff, but we save time on administration and our records are more accurate. Overall, we spend more time with residents. We are very happy with Mobile Care Monitoring.”
Gaynor Abrams, Business Development Manager at MPS Care says, “Staff at our homes love the system as it’s so simple to use and means they save time on administration and can focus on care. We believe that Mobile Care Monitoring is a real benefit to our staff and a big selling point in attracting and retaining future employees and ultimately increasing retention of our staff across our group of care homes.”
Provides a return on investment
Improves residents’ quality of health and care
Rishi Sodha, Director at Handsale Care Homes says, “Person Centred Software has been extremely responsive to my needs and Mobile Care Monitoring is very intuitive and closely aligned to our care homes’ needs. We’ve achieved an excellent return on investment, and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending the software. It’s worth every penny and more.”
Suzanne Slavern, Team Leader, Brantley Manor Care Home, part of Pearlcare says, “Since using Mobile Care Monitoring, we have needed to give residents fewer antibiotics. This is due to a decrease in UTIs and chest infections, and we know that the live fluid monitoring recording in the system has really helped to prevent UTIs.”

Issac Theophilos – Q&A 1. IF THERE WAS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE OUR DELEGATES FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Stop and reflect on how you deliver the care now. Identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks of your service. Remember, you can self-assess your service only to the extent of your knowledge and expertise. Get a third person to evaluate if you are not confident in your own assessment. It is hard to find out what is going wrong in front of you when you see it every day.
2. PROFESSIONALLY, WHAT INSPIRES YOU? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? Inspiring others to do their best to achieve better results in their personal and professional life. I am pleased when I see the residents in care homes get a better service because of my input. I love creating bespoke systems and process for care home business to ensure smooth operations resulting in predictable ‘outstanding’ outcomes for the people we care. My life is about #missionoutstanding, as everyone deserves outstanding care when they are unwell.
3. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR THE SECTOR IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?
4. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR DELEGATES TO ATTEND YOUR SEMINAR? I will be sharing some new analysis about Outstanding care home business with other care homes. It has been five years since CQC introduced the rating type inspection system. Still, only 3.5% of the care homes are rated as Outstanding. I will be giving my best tips on how to align your ‘why’ in line with CQC regulations to achieve Outstanding rating. The session will be fun, emotional, analytical and engaging. I will leave you with lots of questions to ask yourself when you go back to running your own care home.
5.
IF YOU WERE ATTENDING THE SHOW AS A DELEGATE, WHY WOULD YOU TAKE TIME OUT OF YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE TO ATTEND THE CARE SHOW?
As a delegate, I would take a day off from my day to day monotonous work to stop and reflect. Attending the Care show has a lot of benefits in understanding what all services and products are available out there to make my job easier. Listening to speakers who have already achieved what you are aspiring to achieve is a shortcut to reach your goal. I did the same when I was a Manager. Reach, listen, learn and improve! Best wishes.
Implications due to Brexit will make everyone’s life hard to predict how things are going to be in the next 12 months. The providers should be vigilant about the impact of Brexit on their dealings with banking, staff recruitment and green paper (if any). There is only so much a single care home can do in terms of a national crisis, the strategy is how, as an individual business, you can cope with the stress and move on. The challenge with the care sector it keeps on evolving with new opportunities and threats, success happens when we navigate tactically to achieve the results we would like to see.
KEYNOTE THEATRE - WEDNESDAY 9TH 13:35 - 14:05 Why all care homes should aim to achieve an outstanding rating? Issac Theophilos, Author, Outstanding Care Homes

A Flexible Approach to Sensory Challenges MohuDesigns has created a range of adaptable sensory blankets called MohuComfort to support the sensory needs of people with sensory processing difficulties, including those on the Dementia journey. Each of us gathers information using our senses and these sensory experiences that we encounter each day help to “nourish the nervous system” (Ayres 1979, 2005) Sensory input is received by receptors in our sensory systems, the processing and organising of the information gathered is part of the function of the central nervous system, throughout our lives. When you think about it you will realise that this is how we perceive ourselves, others and the world we live in. It also determines or at least influences, whether we feel safe, in balance and able to communicate with others and engage in activities. The sensory systems also play a protective role, warning us of potential dangers or concerns. The ability to process sensory information can be reduced with age. This is more severe among people with conditions that attack the part of the brain where information is processed and lead them feeling anxious and may cause dramatic responses to seemly minor triggers. When we look at people with Dementia and consider the way their senses work in the context of their lives we can get cues as to how we may help them. To help requires one on one investigation and individual sensory strategies that can be used to: Help people to: • feel calm • self- soothe • comfort
Promote feelings of: • safety • comfort Distract from; • difficult thoughts such as confusion/ paranoia • Emotions such as anger, sadness & fear Encourage: • Social participation • reminiscence • communication Help decrease the incidence of: • Agitation • Aggressive Behaviours • Use of restraints. Meeting the unique sensory needs of each individual can be a challenge, as can finding adaptable, quality tools to support these needs. The CE quality marked MohuDesigns range, including the MohuComfort & MohuCover sensory blankets, can be adapted by attaching texture and activity patches, called MohuPatches, to the sensory blankets and adding a weighted blanket. Hard and soft textures, fidgets, pull straps , picture frames and pockets can all be used to personalise each MohuComfort in an individual way. MohuComfort is a beautifully crafted sensory blanket that is so much more than a comforter. Available in a range of designs suited to a wide variety of individual tastes. Find out more and buy yours at www.mohudesigns.com or contact Alison Power at info@mohudesigns.com
