This includes the high-level design of data centres and IT equipment rooms and the detailed design/procurement of cabling systems, containment, equipment cabinets, cabinet power, monitoring systems, cable management and patching and more. What’s different from when you first got into the game? The basis of the role remains the same but the advent of data centres has been an exciting development that has concentrated a lot of IT Physical Infrastructure in a single location. The ever-evolving field of fibre optic and copper cabling continues to keep the work interesting.

What’s the next hotshot trend for this season? An increasing deployment of “Smart” Building Systems deploying a wide range of devices. Greater use of singlemode fibre within the data centre environment. Also, “edge” computing seems to be gathering interest. Why are you such a loyal DCW fan? I like seeing the latest products, speaking to manufacturer representatives, meeting industry colleagues and gathering information from seminars. What helps you keep the faith? I’m still as interested in IT Physical Infrastructure today as I was at the start of my career over 30 years ago! Describe DCW in three words? Engaging. Informative. Interactive.
