History

With its heavy legacy, Argos Orestiko constitutes one of the oldest Μunicipalities in the country. It was the capital of ancient Orestis, a province of Upper Macedonia, center of the Orestae tribe and the cradle of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom.

Με βάση τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα, η πόλη ταυτίζεται με τα ερείπια που σώζονται στην τοποθεσία Αρμενοχώρι. Στα τέλη του 3ου μ.Χ. αιώνα, η πόλη ξαναχτίστηκε από τον Διοκλητιανό, οχυρώθηκε με ασβεστόχτιστο τείχος και μετονομάστηκε σε Διοκλητιανούπολη.

Based on the archaeological data, the city is identified with the ruins preserved at the Armenochori site. During the late 3rd century A.D., the city was rebuilt by Diocletian; it was fortified with a limestone wall and renamed as Diocletianoupolis.

The value of its local history becomes evident through a visit to the city’s Archaeological Museum, which houses findings from the time of Homer – a unique phalanx shield of the Paeonian infantry, among others – but also once you explore the archaeological site of the Roman Diocletianoupolis and the excavations at the Paravela site.
