Psili Ammos: The iconic beach of Patmos

A remote sandy beach with cool waters and its own taverna, is considered one of the best "secret" beaches in Europe

Psili Ammos is considered as one of the most iconic beaches of Patmos, it is however approached only on foot or by boat. The abundance of information generated during the internet era has had a major impact on travel reportage, bringing to the fore of publicity locations that for decades were considered well-kept secrets, known only to a few.

A typical case from the Dodecanese side of the Aegean, let's say, is Psili Ammos of Patmos. The year before, the beach found itself competing for the title of the best "secret" beach all over Europe, with shores like San Giovanni di Sinis in Sardinia or Argèles-sur-Mer in France and with the prestigious Travel & Leisure magazine ranking it 4th out of 10 choices. The word "secret", of course, is rightly put in quotation marks, as over time the recognition of Psili Ammos becomes greater and greater. By now, aſter all, despite its inaccessible location, it is considered the most iconic beach of Patmos, with the result that it hosts many visitors during the summer season, compared to what happened some years ago. Nevertheless, it has fully preserved its character, as well as its quietness, as it generally still avoids crowds.

Golden sand, tamarisk trees and emerald waters

Psili Ammos is located on a bay in the southwestern part of Patmos and is considered its most isolated coast: both because of its inaccessible location, but also because it is not close to any of the other beaches of the island. That is why it used to be a favorite destination for visitors who liked free camping and nudism, who of course still come nowadays (nudists now sit at the southern end), in which the tourist boats transfer a lot of people here – especially on Sundays in August.

As mentioned above, despite its touristic promotion during the last decade, Psili Ammos has preserved its old character. Therefore, it remains an unorganized shore, without umbrellas and sunbeds, in which you will have to bring your own equipment if you want to enjoy the wonderful waters uninterrupted. If you go early in the morning, of course, you may ensure natural shade under the tamarisk trees.

However, you won't need additional supplies, as during the summer months there is an open tavern (known simply as the Psili Ammos tavern), which is the sole sign of "civilization" on the secluded coast. There you will find cold water, soſt drinks, beers and coffee - Greek and frappe – while it is worth to dine there aſter swimming: there may not be great variety on the menu, but you will be impressed by tasting local goat and chicken.
