More breast milk donations needed
August 12th
Fraser Health calls on donors, especially in Cloverdale and eastern Fraser Valley By Jennifer Lang Got milk? More lactating moms are needed to help bolster the supply of breast milk. Donations have dropped dramatically in some communities in the eastern Fraser Valley, including Cloverdale, Fraser Health Authority spokesperson Tasleem Juma said. Last year, breast-feeding mothers in Cloverdale donated 110,840 ml (3,719 ounces) of breast milk. Donations so far in 2015 are much lower at just 16,138 ml, or 538 ounces. Human milk is a valuable resource. It’s used to help tiny, sick babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the health region, where the need is increasing – but the supply is not, Juma said. Human milk can save lives of premature babies, who are prone to infections and illness. Not all

of them can tolerate supplemental formula. A devastating bowel disease called necrotizing enterocolitis is
much more common in premature babies that are fed formula instead of human breast milk. Mothers in some cases struggle
Women who are currently breastfeeding can visit www.bcwomensmilkbank.ca to complete a quick screening to see if they’re eligible to donate any extra breast milk. Once fully screened by the Provincial Milk Bank, potential donors will need to have blood work done at a local lab. Their doctor is contacted to confirm that both the donating mother and baby are healthy and thriving. “And that’s it,” says Juma. Mothers pump their milk, store it in the freezer using milk storage
bags, and drop donations off at their local milk collection depot. (A minimum of 150 ounces or 4,500 ml is usually required). The World Health Organization recommends babies get only breast milk until they’re six months old and that they continue to be breast fed with other nutritious foods added until at least two years. Every health unit in the Fraser Health region is now a milk collection depot, including the Cloverdale Health Unit at 17710 56 Avenue, Surrey (call 604-5755100), the Newton Health Unit, North Surrey Health Unit, and the White Rock Health Unit.

Surrey sees record number of brush fires Fire crews have extinguished 270 grass fires so far this year, double the number they saw in all of 2014 By Kevin Diakiw Surrey is burning at an unprecedented rate, as a continued heat wave and dry foliage has contributed to 270 brush fires so far this year. It’s double the amount of blazes in Surrey in all of last year, and if the trend continues, Surrey fire crews will have to attend more than 450 brush fires this year. Assistant Fire Chief Steve Robinson said it’s quite likely this city will see that many fires this year. In the span of just one week late last month, fire crews were called to 15 fires a day. For the most part, city officials say the fires are completely preventable and the huge spike has prompted a warning

from Surrey fire crews and the mayor. “I urge all residents to use extreme caution at this time to prevent fires in our city,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “With the unprecedented dry weather we’ve had this summer, it is incumbent that we all play our part to protect our parks and public spaces.” Officials are urging Surrey residents to take the following measures in order to reduce the number of fires: • Dispose of smoking materials properly and make sure they are completely extinguished. • Don’t leave barbecues unattended and ensure they are turned off properly after you have finished using them. • Explain to children the dangers of playing with and lighting fires. • Properly dispose of bottles and broken glass you find outdoors to avoid them magnifying the sun’s rays and starting a fire. The city said bylaw officials would be out in force over the weekend to ensure people are adhering to a total fire ban. Those caught will be given fines of $200 and may face prosecution. Robinson said it’s quiet likely the fire restrictions will remain in place at least until the water restrictions are lifted, which is expected to be by the end of September. Anyone who sees people barbecuing or having a fire in city green spaces, is urged to call the fire department at 604-5436700 and if there’s a fire out of control, call 9-1-1 immediately. – Black Press

Real time traffic signs coming to Surrey Drivers using busy routes through Surrey will soon be able to check electronic signs to help avoid the worst congestion. The municipality will become the first in B.C. to install a $2-million realtime travel information system to relay data to drivers and improve the flow of vehicles through the city. Dynamic message signs will go up on key truck routes to provide realtime traffic conditions, similar to ones run by the province for Highways 91 and 99 in Delta and Richmond. They’re tentatively planned for King George Boulevard, 152 Street, 88 Avenue, and busy stretches of Fraser Highway and 96 Avenue. Data will help guide future transportation planning and will also be relayed to the city’s Traffic Management Centre and posted to the city website. The federal government is covering half the cost. – Cloverdale Reporter

ho doesn’t love a compliment? Having someone tell you that they love something about your physical appearance or what you are wearing feels great. A stranger letting you know you are good at your job really perks you up. The power of a compliment can be astounding. I rode that high for three straight days. Even now, as I think of it I have smile on my face. Compliments are powerful. They can make an ordinary day memorable. Five new judges named By Jeff Nagel The province has appointed five new Provincial Court judges, including two to be posted in Surrey and one in Abbotsford. Judge Valliammai Chettiar and Judge Kathryn Ferriss will serve out of the Surrey courthouse, while Judge Jay Solomon is assigned to Abbotsford. Chettiar has extensive experience as a civil lawyer, Solomon was a criminal defence and personal injury lawyer, while Ferriss was a family lawyer primarily represented legal aid clients. Two other Provincial Court judges include one posted to Victoria and another yet to be assigned. Meanwhile, a judge who graduated from UBC and the University of Victoria is the newest appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada. Justice Russell Brown, previously an Alberta Court of Appeal judge, was appointed in July by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Brown’s appointment has been viewed by some observers as an attempt to place a more conservative voice on the high court after rulings against the federal government on multiple fronts, including mandatory minimum sentences, prostitution and medical marijuana. – Black Press

Bacon trial postponed By Kevin Diakiw The trial for Jamie Bacon has been postponed for more than a year due to a lengthy pre-trial process. Bacon, on trial in relation to the Surrey Six slayings in October 2007, was due to be in court on Sept. 2 on one count of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The so-called Surrey Six slayings at Balmoral Tower in Whalley left six dead, including two innocent bystanders – Chris Mohan of Surrey and Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford. On Tuesday, July 28, the trial was put forward to Oct. 31, 2016 – seven years after Bacon was arrested in connection with the crime. “A number of factors (caused the postponement), but that included that there’s additional time that’s expected to be needed to deal with some additional pre-

people have been convicted, or have pleaded guilty, to a role in the murders of Corey Lal, his brother Michael, associates Ryan Bartolomeo and Eddie Narong, and Schellenberg and Mohan. Last December, Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston were sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy.
They are appealing their convictions. Earlier, Michael Le pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to 12 years. One person, who can only be identified as Person X by court order, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2009 for three of the murders and was sentenced to life with no parole for 15 years. The lengthy wait for trial isn’t likely to benefit Bacon. In non-murder trials, time in custody prior to trial often counts as double time when sentencing is given. However, that’s not the case in murder trials. Typically, time served will come off the time required for parole eligibility. For murder charges, time spent in jail prior to a conviction is counted as straight time. – Black Press

Median barrier on the way for ‘Ladybug Hill’ By Kevin Diakiw The family of a teen killed in a horrific crash last year is happy the province is finally building a median on a deadly stretch of Highway 10. But they wonder, if authorities had acted sooner, if their son and his friend would still be alive. Lisa Kehler said she’s extremely pleased the province is constructing a median barrier along 600 metres of Highway 10, between Scott Road and Highway 91. It’s where her son Cody, and his friend Chantal MacLean, slid on a rain-soaked curve on Oct. 13, 2014 while travelling westbound
Cody Kehler and Chantal MacLean were killed last October in a crash on Highway 10 between Scott Road and Highway 91.
cause it didn’t need to happen… How many lives is too many?” The B.C. Ministry of Transportation announced that work would begin at the end of July to add 600 metres of median barrier between Scott Road and
Highway 91, along with a widening of that section of Highway 10. Drivers are advised to expect delays until the $2.15-million project is completed sometime this fall. The corridor carries 30,000 vehicles a day. Kehler hopes to be at the project unveiling. While it’s too late for her son, she feels he might not have died in vain if another life can be saved with the barrier. It’s been an incredibly tough time for the family since the teens’ deaths, Kehler said. “I think the shock and awe has worn off – now we’re just in the reality
HOV lane rules tighten Solo drivers can no longer use the Highway 1 HOV lanes west of the Port Mann Bridge on evenings and weekends. HOV restrictions there had been relaxed during construction of the Port Mann/Highway 1 expansion project but they’ll be back in effect 24 hours a day as of Aug. 1. Officials say the HOV rule relaxation helped avoid traffic jams on the corridor at off peak times when work required multiple lane closures. Final finishing work wraps up later this summer. Dedicated HOV off-ramps – at 156 Street, 202 Street and Grandview – will also be restricted to vehicles with two or more occupants 24 hours a day. – Black Press

‘I’m glad that it’s going up but it’s not going to bring my son back.’ - Lisa Kehler and sailed into oncoming traffic. The two 17-year-olds – both students at Clayton Heights Secondary – were killed instantly. The pair were on their way to have Thanksgiving dinner at Cody’s family’s house when the crash occurred. “It’s seriously sad that medians were highly suggested two years ago,” Kehler said. “I’m glad that it’s going up, but it’s not going to bring my son back. “Barriers all the way up Highway 10, until you get to the most dangerous part, and then there’s nothing,” she said. “It’s such a waste, be-
that he’s never coming home,” she said. Kehler is now hoping to have the stretch of road renamed “Ladybug Hill” after her son. Ladybugs are a favourite family symbol for the Kehlers. She has spoken with Delta councillors, but has received no assurances that a name change is being considered.

Violence soars in Surrey
Let us do the legal work.
Newton led the city in 2014 with a spike in attempted homicides, RCMP stats show By Kevin Diakiw Violent crime in Surrey has skyrocketed by 34 per cent, with attempted murders six times that of the first half of last year. Newton led the city with the spike in attempted homicides, experiencing a 900-percent jump in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year. It was followed by Whalley at a 300-percent climb in attempted homicides, while other communities saw no change. Homicides were down 33 per cent overall. Police say the large amount of attempted murders are due to the drug turf war playing out, largely in Newton and Whalley, where two groups are battling over a dial-a-dope operation. The police said in a release there has been a
recent drop in the number of shootings, in part because of a multi-jurisdictional clampdown on the people believed to be involved. The statistics released Friday are made public by the Surrey RCMP every quarter, as was mandated by council as part of the Crime Reduction Strategy in a move toward further transparency. Overall in Surrey, most violent crimes were on the increase, including sex assault (up 65 per cent), abduction and kidnapping (up 55 per cent), and robbery, which was up 33 per cent. No community in Surrey was spared the spike in violent crimes. Cloverdale/Port Kells saw the biggest jump at 46 per cent, followed by Guildford/Fleetwood at 41 per cent. Newton followed with a 33-percent jump, and South
Surrey was right behind with a 31-per-cent spike. Whalley saw the lowest climb in violent crime at 28 per cent. Sex assaults were also up dramatically across the city, with the only drop being in Whalley, which decreased by 11 per cent. The most dramatic rise in sex assaults was in Cloverdale/Port Kells, which increased by 150 per cent (four to 10). It was followed by South Surrey, up 100 per cent (from five to 10). In Newton, sex assaults climbed from 22 to 43, a jump of 95 per cent, while Guildford/ Fleetwood sex assaults shot up from 13 to 23, an increase of 77 per cent. Bright spots in the second-quarter statistics were a decrease in thefts over $5,000,
which fell by 33 per cent, a 21-per-cent decrease in residential break-and-enters, a 28-per-cent drop in identity theft and a 12-per-cent decline in business break-andenters. “I am pleased to see that property crime is down in our city as a result of the hard work of our target teams and residents and business owners who are taking steps to protect themselves and their property, said Chief Supt. Bill Fordy, Surrey RCMP’s Officer in Charge. “While the news is not as good in our violent crime category, the focus we’ve placed on the shooting conflict and robberies with our law enforcement partners is leading to arrests and charges that will hopefully drive crime down as we continue to apply
Shellfish risk grows with heat By Jeff Nagel A surge in shellfish-related illness because of the hot summer weather has prompted the B.C. Centre for Disease Control to issue a warning to oyster lovers. The centre says 35 cases of a bacterial infection called Vibrio parahaemolyticus have been reported in June and July – an unprecedented number. Most people got sick from eating raw B.C. oysters served in restaurants, although some cases involved oysters that were self-harvested or bought at retail outlets. The bacteria occurs naturally in shellfish like oysters, clams, mussels, scallops and cockles and their concentrations rise in the summer months when water temperatures get warmer. “The risk is especially high this summer, as we can see from the number of Vibrio infections reported during the last two months, said BCCDC
epidemiologist Marsha Taylor. People can get sick when contaminated shellfish are eaten raw or undercooked. Diarrhea is the most common symptom from infection, but nausea, vomiting, fever, headache and bloody stools can also result. Symptoms last three days to a week and don’t usually require treatment. The BCCDC advises consumers to eat only cooked shellfish to destroy the bacteria and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal illness. – Black Press

AUGUST 2015 The voice of business in the community of Cloverdale
President’s Message The Chamber has held their last few luncheons at Charcoal and Woodz Restaurant and we wish to thank Jas Chhina and his staff for welcoming our Chamber group. We will be taking a summer break for August and no luncheon will be held. Our next one is scheduled for September and will be at the Vault Restaurant. We encourage you to attend these different venues and see what Cloverdale has to offer from
our restaurant businesses. Recently, at our July luncheon, we had the honor of hearing from Norm Stowe, a great friend of Bill Reid speak to the contributions Bill made for our community. He announced that friends of Bill are coming together to commission a Public Art statue of Bill by famous sculptor Paul Slipper. Mr. Slipper is responsible for the bigger-than-life figurines on 176 Street. The statue of Bill will serve as a great ambassador for the community and with his big smile and wave, he will welcome all to “centre of the universe”.

FELINE VETERINARIAN Does your CAT SCRATCH in Undesirable Areas? Scratching is normal cat behavior, serving to groom the front claws and leave markers of the cat’s presence. Proper training to scratch on appropriate surfaces, combined with nail care, can Dr. Anik Bay B.Sc., DVM prevent damage in the home. Locate scratching posts near areas favored by cats, such as windows or sleeping areas since cats often stretch and scratch upon awakening. Rewards can be given at each step as the cat approaches the post, touches it, and finally scratches it. Never yell at or punish the cat. Place double sided sticky tape on inappropriate areas and reward use of the post. This helps direct the cat to the post. Trim the tips of the nails every one or two weeks. If done correctly, this procedure is well accepted by most cats. Introduce nail trimming as part of routine handling to kittens.

THERMOSLIM Christine Cheng, B.Sc. More importantly, it can help enhance the action of insulin, which helps avoid the weight gain associated with poorly-managed blood sugar. At a dosage of 2 capsules a day, this is an easy addition to a daily weight loss routine.

Brisk walking for 35 minutes, 5 days per week, or for 60 minutes, 3 days per week, were both found to significantly improve symptoms in mild and moderate depression. Exercise may be an acceptable substitute for antidepressants in many cases, especially for those who do not wish to take drugs or experience side effects from them. In all cases, exercise should be considered as a key therapy in an individualized treatment plan.

Q: What is a root canal? canal treatment is the process of A: Root removing infected, injured or dead pulp
from your tooth. The space inside the hard layers of each tooth is made up of soft pulp that contains nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria enters your tooth through Dr. Parveen Atwal deep cavities, cracks or fl awed fi llings, your tooth can become abscessed which is an infection in the pulp. If pulp becomes infected, then it needs to be removed. An abscessed tooth may cause pain and/or swelling. Your dentist may notice the infection from a dental x-ray or from other changes with the tooth. During treatment the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then fi lled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Afterwards, the tooth is ideally restored with a crown for protection. A root canal feels similar to having a fi lling and usually can be completed in one appointment. Unlike the perceived stereotype, there is no pain felt from the root canal procedure itself.

A: Make
sure your realtor has experience in this endeavor as there are things you can do to prepare. Having all the Edith Katronis information on the listing is critical. Knowing how many offers are going in before you can help you decide on what price you will offer. Being there at the property when the offer is being presented is important. Your realtor will not know what the other offers are but can guide you on market value with recent sales information.
