A seasonal favourite thrills

BOAZ JOSEPH / BLACK PRESS

Sky Kao takes to the air during the Royal City Youth Ballet Company’s annual performance of The Nutcracker on Dec. 13 at the Surrey Arts Centre.

Our first Christmas tree Surrey pioneer Mary Jane Shannon recalls the day her drab little school house was turned into a fairy land

O

ur first Christmas tree was a great surprise to us, and was due entirely to the kindness of our teacher, Mr. J. A. McLean, a tall kindly man whom we all respected and loved. Not only was he a kind and sympathetic teacher, but he was also a lively playfellow who entered into our sports with zest and good humour. Before school closed for the Christmas holidays, he held a written examination for the senior class of which both my eldest brothers and I were members. For the pupils with the highest marks he offered five dollars. Of course the chance of winning such a sum was a great incentive to study, and we all dug in, though I had little hope of the prize, not being one of the top students. Some of the parents, perhaps feeling that the teacher whose salary was small enough, thought that he was being unduly generous, and suggested that the pupils should make him a present of some sort. A writing case was decided upon which was well equipped with pens and a supply of good note paper. When the examination papers were corrected, my brother Sam and one other pupil were found to have tied in the total of the tests. The results were announced on closing day to a crowded room, as the competition had stirred a good deal of interest. After the teacher had made the announcement and awarded the divided prize money, the two winners made the presentation, which the teacher received with undoubted appreciation that bordered on emotion, so much so,

that his voice quavered and his hand shook a little as he said a few words of thanks. Then it was that he threw another surprise on the surprise. Getting to his feet again he suggested that we have a Christmas tree and concert to be held right here in our little class room.. The suggestion quitee electrified those present nt and for a brief period there was only silence. Then one of the trustees agreed that there was no reason why we should not have a tree, for the children had studied hard and deserved a treat as a Christmas gift. Other voices joined in and it was not long before the whole thing was arranged, the money collected, a good programme promised, and all in an amazingly short time. With much excitementt and elation at the prospect of the first Christmas tree ever held in the place, the gathering broke up and left for home. The next few days were busy ones, for Christmas was less than a week away. However there was hearty cooperation on the part of the entire community, the men

searching the woods for a suitable tree, a committee chosen to go to New Westminster to buy the gifts, and the women busy at making refreshments for the expected crowd. Certainly their combined efforts made a great success of the affair. success our For a huge su first Christmas tree proved to be. The little littl school house was cro crowded to the doors and to us u the pupils, the drab little b building was turned into a fairy fa land, festooned with ccedar boughs, the tall evergreen tree t filling one corner, loaded with presents for the childr children and gaily decorated with w coloured ornament ornaments and bright cand candles. We were an excited lot of children who gathered w iin front seats aand gazed at this amazing th and beautifu beautiful spectacle. No doubt we also stared at the crowd pushing into the already overfu overfull room, many of them utter strangers whom we had never seen before. It was surprising that so many people lived close enough to have heard of our little Christmas entertainment, let alone to have come to it. Presently a chairman was chosen and given a seat on the platform. He was a jolly,

witty old sea captain who carried off his duties to the enjoyment of all. As for the program, it was a medley of everything from the sacred to the comic. We had need of the Captain’s jollity and wit to carry it off. I think all the old stand-bys which had come to the fore at entertainments for years appeared again, “When You and I were Young Maggie,” “Curfew Shall Not Ring Tonight,” “I’ve Wandered in the Village Tom,” “Death of Napoleon,” and other old favourites which still thrilled us. Then came the distribution of presents which was the greatest thrill of all. Some of the grown ups also got presents which were on the comical side and afforded a great deal of merriment. Refreshments were duly passed and enjoyed by every one. Finally desks were pushed to the wall, a fiddler given a seat on the platform, and young people took to the floor and danced with vim and vigor. They were still dancing when we with our parents left the gay scene and stepped out into the darkness of night. It had begun to snow, but who cared for snow. We had just had a happy, wonderful experience and passed another milestone in our lives. – From ‘Memories’, by Surrey pioneer Mary Jane Shannon, available at the Surrey Archives. She was a student, and eventually a teacher, at Clover Valley School. She later pursued a career in nursing.

What is Christmas? Christmas is spending time with others. It’s like a warm fire under the stars. It’s about caring for others. Here’s a tip: if you’re bad, you will be on the bad list. If you’re good, you will be on the nice list. Hazel

The important thing about Christmas is that you have love. When Christmas comes you decorate your house. You put up lights. You put it on your tree too. You will have an angel, a star or a bell on the top of your tree. It will snow on Christmas. You may go skating on Christmas. Abby McKague

Ava

The most important thing about Christmas is that you spend time with your family. You can open presents with your family. You can decorate your house with your family. Everyone can celebrate Christmas everywhere in the world! Kai Trattle

You could decorate your Christmas tree. You could make a gingerbread house. You could make food for Santa and his reindeer. You could make a gingerbread man. You could make presents. But the most important thing about Christmas is that we have family come over. Simone Donor

Brennen

The most important thing about Christmas is that Santa Claus comes. He gives you presents and it is fun to open them. You get to make a gingerbread house and you get to eat it. You put a wreath on the door. You get to put up a stocking and Santa comes and puts toys in it. You get icicles on your house. Max McKague

The most important thing about Christmas is that I spend time with my family. I decorate my Christmas tree. I go to my Gramma’s house for dinner. You can go on a daddy date... go get a Christmas tree and get a candy cane. You can go to church and hold a candle. Amanda Emerson

Calum

The carolers come and spread the joy. Why a wreath is put upon a door, soon the joy will spread more and more. Now everybody celebrates and everybody’s happy. Have a very merry Christmas! The most important thing about Christmas is that our family comes. Ava Skiba

Christmas is special to me because every year we read “The Night Before Christmas”. Then we put out milk and cookies for Santa and zucchini for the reindeer. Then in the morning we wait for my parents and then we go downstairs and just look at our stockings. When the rest of my family arrives we eat breakfast then we open presents. At night we eat turkey dinner at my grandparents’ house. My cousins come and so does the rest of my family. When we are done we open more presents. Julianna Chapieski, Grade 3, AJ McLellan

Christmas is special to me because I like to make reindeer food and put it on the grass for the reindeer to eat. My family also has a big party on Christmas Eve. Every year at the party we make firecrackers. One of my favourite things to do on Christmas is decorating because I am very good at it. We also get one of those Christmas count down things that you take chocolate out of until Christmas. My favourite thing to do is bake Christmas cookies and other things you bake on Christmas. I also like sledding. Christmas is my favourite holiday because it is one of the most interesting holidays to me and I get to do the most special things at Christmas time. I also like decorating gingerbread houses. That is why I like Christmas. Henna Nagra, Grade 3, AJ McLellan
