Ready for the Rodeo

New Cloverdale Rodeo GM brings years of experience to the job By Jennifer Lang When it comes to finding someone qualified to oversee an event the size of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair – plus day-to-day operations of the Cloverdale Fairgrounds – the list of potential candidates would seem a fairly select group. But those are qualities Mike MacSorely has in spades. A former vice president of operations for the Pacific National Exhibition with more than 20 years experience in the event industry, MacSorely is the new general manager of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association. So new, in fact, his first day on the job was Monday. Reached on his mobile phone as he oriented himself on the expansive fairgrounds, home to eight facilities that host more than 700 events each year, MacSorely sounded upbeat and excited about his new job. “I’ve been here six hours and I’ve met some really great people who seem very dedicated,” he said. “One of the big things I want to do is make sure people know we’re an all-year operation,” he said, adding he is still getting acquainted with all of events and groups that take place at the fairgrounds, such as the weekly Cloverdale flea market, a long-

standing Sunday tradition that remains a big draw. He’s also looking forward to getting to know more of the team of dedicated volunteers who grow into an army by the time the May long weekend rolls around each year to host the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair. But most of all he’s looking forward to getting back into this line of work. “Once you do events, it gets into your blood,” he said. “It’s just exciting.” He was with the PNE for 14 years, most recently as the vice president of operations, a role that included acting as the PNE’s liaison for the 2010 Winter Olympics in addition to overseeing the exhibition each year. Unlike many of his new colleagues in Cloverdale, he can’t ride a horse. Well, he doesn’t ride, to be more precise. “I’m allergic to horses. I have to be careful.” Planning is already underway for the 67th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 124th Country Fair, slated for May 17 to 20, 2013. One of MacSorely’s goals is to ensure visitors really feel like they’re visiting a rodeo, something he hopes will be evident the minute they enter the fairgrounds. “I just want to make sure that when you think of Cloverdale and the Rodeo, you feel great pride in it.”

The move would improve traffic flow through to businesses along 176A Street as well as to the Cloverdale Library and Surrey Museum, and would add more street parking. With the Cloverdale BIA now on board, city hall will now look at the cost implications as well as enter into a dialogue with neighbouring busi-

nesses that would be impacted by paving the plaza. “It’s still at the discussion level,” cautioned Cloverdale BIA executive director Paul Orazietti. The new roadway wouldn’t be wide enough to accommodate two lanes of traffic, so the new lane would be would be one-way, with new parking stalls on one side of the street. Surrey Bend may offset SPFR damage By Jeff Nagel The province wants to spend money improving salmon habitat in Surrey Bend Regional Park to offset damage caused by construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Metro Vancouver has not yet approved the idea, which would require the region altering its park plan and perhaps changing where it intended to develop trails and other infrastructure in the park. Surrey Bend, which fronts the Fraser River just west of Barnston Island, isn’t yet open to the public and work is to start in 2014 on trails, washrooms, a picnic area and parking lot. The province’s Transportation Investment Corp, which is leading the perimeter road work, would build new tidal channels in the southeastern part of the park, enhance existing channels and remove other barriers to fish. Metro let TI Corp build similar fish habitat upgrades at Colony Farm Regional Park to offset Port Mann/Highway 1 impacts, despite opposition from some environmentalists who warned bird habitat would be lost. – Black Press

Another tip of the hat for an old idea that’s being pulled down from the shelf – opening up 56A Avenue to traffic between 176 and 176A Streets. The small block is currently home to a shady plaza and a short alley, offering a THE H restful spot in summer but confounding dozens of drivers each week. I know because inevitably some of those TH confused drivers pull over outside our office – located on the west side of 176 Street on 56A – and in obvious frustration and befuddlement, ask directions to businesses on the opposite side of the pedestrian walkway blocking the view and the route. Not a week goes by when someone doesn’t race in, double parked, seeking the way to some local businesses or other – from the Surrey Museum, Cloverdale Library, and more – but they don’t understand how to get there.

The Cloverdale BIA recently agreed to lend its support to a plan asking the city to study the idea in more detail. Not a promise, but a promising development. We’ll miss the trees, but will enjoy a more functional downtown. Now... what about that long-promised gateway signage pointing visitors along the bypass to the historic town centre?

Dann’s the man

We note this week that Surrey’s longest-serving businessman has put his iconic 1920 Cloverdale building up for sale. Allan Dann, 87, of Dann’s Electronics, has been threatening for years he wants to retire. Dann grew up in the apartment upstairs, and eventually took over his father Ernest’s business in 1973. To Allan and his assistant Gail: there isn’t a hat large or wide enough to contain all the best wishes we’re sending your way.

We offer a strapping, lumberjack-sized dig of the spurs to the developer who chopped down 70 trees in South Surrey this summer – damaging a riparian zone for threatened salmon species and other wildlife. The development required the removal of 39 “significant” trees. Dozens more trees were razed on land designated as city park and private properties when those trees were removed Aug. 12. The developer also cut into a fish-bearing stream. Whoops! The city slapped a stop work order on the proceedings – but only after residents complained. “You’ve ruined our future,” an eight-year-old boy and neighbour told the cutter. Surrey’s mayor, understandably, reacted with outrage. “There are going to be some significant fines,” Dianne Watts vvowed, promising to stop the developer from proceeding and to pay fines and restitution. “It’s beyond me how this can

happen when you have a responsible person undertaking this work,” she added, indicating she’s prepared to ban them from the city. Still, considering the amount of trees being felled by new development across Surrey, including the removal of 332 significant trees from the heritage Bose Farm at OF 16420 64 Ave., pending approval, Watts’ assurances are bound to be greeted with some anxiety at the loss of greenery in our city. Cramped schools taking a toll in Surrey by Sheila Reynolds Overcrowding at Surrey’s Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary has had a negative impact on students’ family lives, employment and postsecondary success and is pushing some P.E. classes into the hallways, according to a Surrey education advocacy group. So far this year, enrolment at the Cloverdale high school is 1,893 students. The school, on 180 Street near 61 Avenue, was built for 1,450 kids. Stromberg said. Capital funding for Surrey was announced last October for a pair of new elementary schools, expansions at two high schools (Fraser Heights and Panorama Ridge) and the purchase of land for four future schools. But Stromberg says it’s a drop in the bucket as those projects won’t be ready until fall 2013 and students continue to flow into Surrey. While enrolment numbers in the majority of B.C. school districts are declining, Surrey’s continues to increase, growing by an average of 500 students per year for the past decade – a trend that’s expected to continue.

Cabinet ministers urged to visit Surrey From page 5

Even if more funding was announced immediately, it takes between three and five years to build a high school. Stromberg told the finance committee that this year, extended schedules are being used at Lord Tweedsmuir, Earl Marriott, Sullivan Heights and North Surrey, with Clayton Heights, Kwantlen Park and Tamanawis likely to follow suit next year. “We therefore know today, that if funding for those two new high schools is announced tomorrow, given normal time frames, we will

have at least seven extremely overcrowded high schools with extended schedules and additional portables before those new schools open,” Stromberg said. The Ad Hoc Committee on Capital Funding for Surrey Schools, a non-partisan, citywide group that lobbies for building money, asked that funding be provided for Surrey’s priority school projects to alleviate overcrowding. The group also urged education minister Don McRae finance minister Mike de Jong to visit Surrey to see the school district’s unique situation firsthand.

The abandoned rats range from hooded “fancy rats” to semi-hairless varieties. Rats respond well to positive reinforcement-based training, and can be turned into affectionate pets. Adoption hours are daily from noon to 5 p.m. The Surrey Animal Resource Centre is located at 6706 152 Street, and moves to 17910 Colebrook Road in Cloverdale in December. No script? No problem The SLT’s 50-hour film challenge – for deadline-oriented auteurs By Jennifer Lang Budding filmmakers, get cracking: it’s time to register for the 50-Hour Film Challenge, Surrey Little Theatre’s 5th annual movie-making marathon. There could be money in it for you. There’s $500 in prize money on the line for the best five-minute film. Don’t have a script? No problem. The whole point is to write, shoot and edit a fiveminute film in just one weekend. Originally launched four years ago to highlight the long-running community theatre troupe’s 50th season, the 50-hour Film Challenge is a runaway success, according to event organizer Brigitte Seib. It gives community members another way to express their creative side, she says. Everyone is welcome to put together a team of five people or more, and come out and participate. It’s open to all ages. Past filmmaking teams included participants as young as 12 years old. Local film schools and “even a brave team of thespians that learned the filmmaking process on the fly” have also taken part, Seib says. “All these films amazed the judges and were in the running for the top prize!” Taking its cue from the popular 48-hour film challenge format, Surrey Little Theatre’s film contestants are encouraged by the good-natured invitation and tagline: “When all you need is a couple extra hours.” Film challenge weekend starts at 6 p.m., Friday Oct. 12, when teams pick up their randomly-selected “inspiration package.” They spend the next 50 hours writing, shooting and editing a five-minute film. The movies must include all the chosen surprise elements. Participants have until 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 to drop off their finished films.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

What are you waiting for? The 50-Hour Film Challenge is open to anyone ready to bare their natural assets.

The results will be screened at a special filmmaker’s reception and gala the following weekend on Saturday, Oct. 20. The early bird registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 28, and the final deadline is Oct. 7. Registration forms and rules available at www. surreylittletheatre.com, or contact Brigitte Seib at brigitte.seib@surreylittletheatre.com or by calling 604-576-8451 for more information.

and beyond. There are even a few from as far away as Chiliwack. Surrey’s Ultimate League hopes to grow to the point where it can one day split off into different divisions. There were six teams the summer the Surrey league began in 2009, and four years later it’s grown to 10. “With a very positive future,” Wilson says. The Surrey Ultimate League’s fall season began Sept. 16 and runs to Dec. 16. Games are Sundays from 2-4 p.m. at Semiahmoo Trail Elementary at 3040 145A Street, Surrey. The cost is just $25 for three months per person, or $40 for two to join for three months. Bring a dark and light-coloured t-shirt, and cleats if you have them.

By Jennifer Lang If you’re looking for a way to keep fit this fall in a spirit of friendly competition, why not give Ultimate frisbee a whirl? The Surrey Ultimate League has just started up its fall season. Newbies and long-time enthusiasts are welcome to drop in for just a game or two, says league coordinator and busy Cloverdale mom Stacey Wilson. Unlike the more structured summer session, the SUL’s fall league is a little more relaxed in terms of individual commitment, but definitely competitive. Sunday afternoons to Dec. 16, players aged 15 and up, from beginner to expert, get together for drop-in games at Semiahmoo Trail Elementary School in South Surrey. The league, founded in 2009, is reaching out to new players who would like to try the sport. Players range from high schoolers to parents of high schoolers and everything in between, including young couples starting families. Ultimate is a great sport for couples to do, she says, pointing out that games are co-ed. “Generally, it’s kid-friendly as well – there’s usually somebody on the sidelines watching the kids.” It’s a fairly easy game to pick up for newbies, says Wilson, who describes Ultimate Frisbee as a cross between football and basketball, and involves opposing teams fighting for control of the disc. The field has two end zones, like football, and the idea is to catch the disc in the end zone to score. It’s similar to basketball in that a player cannot take steps after catching the disc – they can only pivot, trying to elude the guard in order to throw to someone else. “If somebody played basketball, it would probably be a really easy transition,” says Wilson, who explains that the “throwing and the catching and the running” is the tricky part. It’s also a demanding workout, especially the first few times out. “Eventually it gets easier. The first couple of weeks might be a little tiring.” In the fall league, there are a lot of veterans who will show new players the ropes. “It’s a sport where we really encourage people to come out. It’s all about the spirit of the game It’s very much about teaching and encouraging people who want to play with us to join the league.” The Sunday games are fairly loose in terms of team makeup. Men and women play together, and organizers try to assemble teams into a mix of experienced and green players. The league’s summer season is more structured, with additional teams and added competition. There are standings and playoffs, requiring more of a firmer commitment from players. “I like that it’s co-ed, so it does give you the option to play with your spouse,” she says. Wilson likes that the sport is co-ed, allowing she and her spouse to play. She also likes the people. “It’s just a really inviting group of people, no matter where you play.” She fell in love with Ultimate when she lived in Toronto. A soccer player at the time, she took up a friend’s suggestion to come out for Ultimate. She was hooked. No matter where she’s lived, she’s always sure to track down the nearest Ultimate league. “You just feel like you’ve been part of the group forever. You don’t feel like you’re an outsider. And, it’s a great workout.” While the Surrey Ultimate League plays in South Surrey, a lot of players come from Cloverdale, Clayton, and Willoughby area of Langley – which doesn’t have a league of its own. Currently, there are Ultimate leagues in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey and Maple Ridge. Players have opportunities to attend tournaments in Vancouver

Nervoheel and Neurexan October 1 - 31 2012

Nervoheel calms stressful moments and relieves nervousness and anxiety to improve general well-being and mood.

October is Eye Health Month – following on the heels of back to school. How appropriate to focus on the importance of keeping your eyes healthy just when the leaves start to change – who would want to miss seeing the beautiful colours of fall? As a mother and an optometrist, I realise the importance of clear vision especially as children head back to the classroom. What often gets forgotten is that the health of your eyes is just as important. In order to maintain eye sight, you need to maintain eye health. This is true regardless of your age or occupation. However, as we get older health concerns do become more of a focus. Certainly, as we get older, we are more likely to develop eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Cataracts are another change that can affect vision quite noticeably. Eye infections, like pink eye, can also occur, although many people think of pink eye as something that is seen more in school aged children. Glaucoma is a disease in which the pressure within the eye gets too high – this damages the nerves in the retina and can lead to blindness if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Glaucoma rarely causes noticeable vision changes in the early stages. Macular Degeneration affects the macula – the small area in the retina

that is responsible for our being able to see detail. Although treatment for macular degeneration is limited, if diagnosed early, there are steps that can be taken to prevent rapid progression. Cataracts are quite a common occurrence, especially as we age, however, they can occur at a young age as a result of poor nutrition or trauma. Cataracts cause blurry vision, sometimes increased glare and even double vision. Treatment is usually by surgery, removing the cloudy lens inside the eye and replacing it with an artificial one. Not only is it important that we get our eyes checked regularly as we get older, at least every 1-2 years, it is important to start at a young age. As children grow and develop, eyesight can change quite suddenly. As we get older, eye health becomes more important as vision stabilizes. Having your eyes checked regularly throughout your life allows your optometrist to understand YOUR eyes, thus making it easier to diagnose problems sooner, if and when they occur. Please come visit your local Cloverdale Optometrist on Saturday September 29th, 2012 from 10 AM to 3 PM at our 3rd Annual Patient Appreciation Day. We are located at 5718 176A St.
