The mood’s upbeat as Sunday market rolls on
Not closing, but entering a new phase.
By Jennifer Lang The new manager of Cloverdale’s flea market takes over this Sunday, promising continued operation over the busy Christmas season as he takes hold of the reigns. Andy James says it’s business as usual for the weekly market, echoing earlier assurances by the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association, responsible for the lease at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.
James plans a series of improvements for the Sunday market, starting with a website where, instead of lining up in the middle of the night, vendors can register for craft tables ahead of time and visitors can find information and directions to the market. Bringing in buskers and family entertainment is one of the ways he plans to enhance the Cloverdale Market to widen its appeal. “The plan is to keep things running smoothly, gradually adding attractions and services to

Sci-fi TV production returns By Jennifer Lang U.S. television show Fringe is returning to Cloverdale, but not everyone’s happy the production threatens to tie up downtown during some of the most important shopping days of the year. Starting Friday and continuing Monday and Tuesday, the crews will spend three days filming scenes for an upcoming episode of the cult sci-fi show. Some local merchants were in an uproar because of plans to restrict public parking on two and a half blocks of 176 Street for an outdoor scene where the action takes place in a deserted urban streetscape. “The stress is when you come in during one
of the busiest time periods of the year,” said Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association. “It has to be handled very sensitively.” In response to vocal concerns from some merchants, City of Surrey Film Office has been trying to convince the production company to diminish the scope of the planned shoot in Cloverdale. The controversy surrounded the production company’s plans to film a deserted ghost town shot that would have effectively shut down two full blocks of 176 Street between 56A Ave. and 58 Avenue for much of Tuesday. But negotiations were
expected to shrink that down to just one block, between 56A Ave. and 57 Ave. “Any time you take away parking and access to a business, this is very disruptive,” he said. This Friday, the show was poised to film inside Cloverdale Pharmasave – standing in for a police station – at the corner of 176A and 57 Ave. Monday, the show was to shoot interiors at two locations: the cafe at the Clover Inn at 5708 176 St., as well as Dann’s Electronics at 5657 176 St., site of a previous Fringe shoot in September where Allan Dann, the 87-year-old proprietor, had a small walk-on part. Businesses are com-
pensated by the production for loss of earnings and for disruption during filming, Orazietti said. Some productions have bigger pockets than others, but at press time it remained to be seen how the situation would be resolved. Fringe is set in Boston, where the FBI’s Fringe Division explores unexplained phenomena and an alternate universe. The show stars Anna Torv, Lance Reddick and Vancouver’s Joshua Jackson. It’s been described as Lost-meetsthe X-Files, and airs on CityTV. The cult series has been criticized for its complicated storylines which make it difficult for the casual viewer to

understand what’s going on. Fans and critics praise it for precisely the same reason, touting its clever writing as a must-see for any sci-fi fan.

A Good Night’s Rest Is there anything better than a good night’s rest? We are happy when our babies finally sleep through the night; students learn better when they get enough sleep; it feels great to wake up rested and refreshed. Going without sleep makes us cranky, and sleep deprivation in drivers can be the cause of serious accidents. I’m sure we’ve all gone through times in our lives when we just aren’t sleeping well. It might be the new baby that’s keeping you awake, toddlers with the flu, or a toothache -- but at least you know it’s a temporary thing. Much worse is the worry and anxiety that can sometimes seem so serious and insurmountable in the middle of the night: anxiety about family members, money problems or some new business venture. The much needed sleep that might help us to deal effectively with our problems eludes us, and we are grumpier and less able to cope the next day. Medications might help, but they come with their own problems. There is another solution: in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminds His followers that they need not worry, that God will look after them just as He looks after the sparrow and the lily. Also, in the book of Psalms, we are told that God “grants sleep to those he loves” (127:2) and King David says “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (4:8). Tell all your cares and worries to God, and have a good night’s rest. By Lyn Metzlar-Leyenhorst CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH OF CLOVERDALE 17473 – 60th Avenue, Surrey • www.cloverdalecanrc.org

The voters have spoken To the editor; Civic politics never has, and never will be easy. I for one applaud Mayor Dianne Watts and her elected council on the results of the Surrey election. To the people who did not vote, or found the line-up too long for their liking, or were taken aback by the fact we have now actually entered the 21st century and have more
modern ways of voting, they cannot negate that the majority of the citizens of Surrey, who but the time and effort to cast their ballot, have soundly spoken. Yes, there are many issues regarding Surrey’s future. We (the voters), in whatever percentage, have spoken, and have elected the very best people to move Surrey forward. Robert Gary Parkes Port Kells

The new tree has 40 strings of LED lighting and is assembled from separate, easy-to-store aluminum parts. The original, 20-foottall tree, Olsson says, “required significant amount of space to store, and it was difficult to transport. We really didn’t have any place to keep it. About the same time, we noticed it was showing signs of wear. So Olsson devised a new one, using a CAD program. He sent his ideas to Aggressive Tube Bending, who turned the designs into reality, performing the cornering and welding. “They did just a wonderful job, Olsson said. Thanks to the LEDs, the electricity bill will be negligible. “With the incandescents, the amperage draw was fairly significant. We were having some power issues. We had to bring in an electrician each year. After years of secrecy about the Christmas tree, the Cloverdale Masons have finally decided to take credit in a more public way. This year, they’ve put up a sign declaring themselves as sponsors. “We’re trying to make ourselves more visible in the community, Olsson says. “A lot of people didn’t realize there was an active Masonic lodge that was associated with Cloverdale. For anyone wanting to find out more, the Cloverdale Lodge will be hosting an open house Feb. 21, 2012.
