It’s also the date of Gammer’s free family movie screening. Annual food drive a community effort In Cloverdale, the words community and Christmas are never far apart. One great example is the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, now entering its 20th year. The locally-operated volunteer initiative continues to help hundreds of families and individuals each holiday season, thanks to the combined efforts of a whole host people and groups. Churches, schools, plus many businesses and organizations all work together to ensure Christmas comes to everyone. Based out of the nerve centre at Pacific Community Church, the non-denominational program collects and distributes tens of thousands of dollars in donations of food, gift items, toys and cash each holiday season, Last year, the program distributed 225 food hampers, assisting 325 adults and 200 children, serving the area from 80 Avenue south to 32 Avenue between 152 St. and 196 St. This year’s application deadline is Monday, Dec. 5. Application forms can be downloaded at www.cloverdalechristmashampers.wordpress.com. Those registered with other hamper organization or the Christmas Bureau are asked not to complete the form. Pick up day is Saturday, Dec. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pacific Community Church, 5337 180 St. Surrey. Volunteers are needed to work on the assembly line during Hamper Week, Dec. 12 to 16, between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. For more information about volunteering, donations, or applications, call 604-574-4001 Ext. 107. Donations of cash, food, merchandise and gifts are accepted. Cash donations receive a tax deductible receipt. Please make cheques payable to Pacific Community Church. Look for donation boxes at various locations throughout Cloverdale, including schools and businesses.

Cloverdale on parade Thousands expected to watch the dazzling display of lighted floats By Jennifer Lang t’s without a doubt the brightest, cheeriest way to get caught up in the spirit of the season. Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights draws thousands of spectators into downtown Cloverdale each year to enjoy the festive atmosphere, thrilling kids and parents alike with dozens of lit up floats and parade entries, plus special guests, including Big Rigs for Kids, featuring local trucks and a convoy from the Island Equipment Owners Association. The parade takes place in the early evening, but it’s traditional all the way, with antique vehicles, service and sports clubs, churches, dignitaries and local businesses. Ronald McDonald is also joining the parade this year, his first Christmas appearance in Cloverdale. That, plus stock cars, a vintage sight-seeing coach, local Girl Guides and Scouts, softball teams and Shell Busey the home handyman expert, and the Surrey Square Wheelers, the long-running square dancing club. As many as 12,000 visitors take in the parade each year, which is about the maximum unless there’s a route expansion, something not easily done. “The route’s pretty heavily concentrated,” says Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, which co-organizes the parade along with the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce. In other words, if you want a good viewing spot, be sure to come out early. “The event continues to grow,” says Orazietti. “We are getting entries from as far away as Chilliwack. There’s a variety of people who are ‘into’ lit-up parades and want to come here.” The parade begins at 5 p.m.,

Market brings the city to the ‘Burbs Third annual Christmas gift and marketplace offers a little something for everyone on your shopping list By Jennifer Lang Shoppers wanting to taste the variety of a larger Christmas market without skipping the charm of a homey craft fair are marking their calendars for this Friday and Saturday. The third annual Christmas in Cloverdale Gift and Craft Marketplace offers a lifeline for shoppers who don’t want to cross a bridge but still want to find unique gifts for the people on their list. More than 100 vendors were expected as of last week, organizer Heather Harasymow said, adding she expected a last-minute crunch of additional bookings. Admission is free this year, but shoppers are reminded to bring along a donation for the Surrey Food Bank. When she started the Christmas market in 2009, there was very little in the way of larger-scale craft fairs in the area. “You have to go across a bridge” to experience anything large-scale, she said. “We wanted to have something in this area, and also help out the local business owners.” The marketplace is designed to be familyfriendly so parents can bring the kids along. Santa will be making appearances both days, giving kids a chance to lobby St. Nick for their wish lists in person. Plus, Imagine Itz Magic is presenting Make Your Own Craft for kids and adults. “She shows how to make your own Christmas craft, so everyone can take something home,” says Harasymow, a busy mother of four youngsters. Joseph the Magician will also be performing magic tricks and making balloon animals for kids and adults.
CHRISTMAS IN CLOVERDALE: GIFT AND CRAFT MARKETPLACE WHEN: Dec. 2 (5-9 p.m.) and 3 (10 a.m -4 p.m.) WHERE: Cloverdale Rodeo Fairgrounds, Shannon Hall and Alice McKay buildings. Admission by donation of a non-perishable food item for the Surrey Food Bank.

With so many different tables to take in, “it’s hard to go in and just go out. There’s just so many vendors. It’s where I start my Christmas shopping.” It’s a great place to find teacher gifts, she adds. There’s a range of items and vendors.

“We try and really balance it well, to have something for everybody,” she said, describing the marketplace as “somewhere in the middle” between a church bazaar and a big convention centre craft fair. Multilevel marketers have been allowed to rent tables on a trial basis this year.
“It’s the new way to work from home. They’re really popular, too.” The marketplace features everything from home baked goods, woodwork, handmade hats and quilts to organic skin care products, candles, authors, and even a crafter who makes items from recycled sweaters. “We’ve got everything!” she says. Other items include photographs, clay figurines, hand sewn dolls, honeybee hive products, nautical toys, candy, reusable lunch bags, and hoodies that make the wearer appear like an elf. There will also be stone planters, handbags, ornamental iron and Christmas tree ornaments and decorations. Over 1,200 people attended last year, and Harasymow expects offering free admission will draw out even more this year. People are encouraged to bring along a donation for the Surrey Food Bank. There will also be a food concession selling hot dogs and other fare. The two-day event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 3 at Shannon Hall and the Alice McKay building at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Sit, stay, meet Santa By Jennifer Lang A local charity that works to improve the lives of animals – and their people – is holding a Christmas-themed fundraiser later this month. Semiahmoo Animal League is offering Pet Photos with Santa (on a Harley-Davidson Bike), a by-donation event taking place at Barnes Harley Davidson Dealership in Langley (8859 201 Street) Saturday, Dec. 10. Photographer Andreas Bernauer is donating his time and expertise to the event,
which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds from each $10 donation go to Semiahmoo Animal League Inc., (SALI), to fund programs for at-risk children and atrisk animals. SALI helps seniors, women fleeing from domestic abuse, and people living on the street keep their pets, through temporary foster programs, sponsorships, and support. It also provides advocacy on behalf of animals and animal welfare and rescue groups. For more information, visit www.sali.ca or call 604-657-2957.

Empty stocking fund for the birds
Elena’s Country Kitchen
Local rescue society needs presents for brainy birds By Jennifer Lang It’s a Christmas wish list for our fine feathered friends. Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary – B.C.’s only registered non-profit exotic bird rescue society – is seeking donations for its empty stocking fund. The organization cares for and rehabilitates abandoned, orphaned, injured and unwanted birds, and offers lost bird recovery. It finds new homes for exotic birds, along with providing education and outreach programs to the public. Greyhaven receives calls almost daily from people who want to give up their birds, says spokesperson Robin Fiorese, who lives in Port Kells along with a clutch of foster birds currently in her care. Unfortunately, too many people aren’t prepared for the demands of owning an exotic bird – or their longevity. “That’s the main problem, because they live so long, they will live in an average of seven homes in their lifetime,” Fiorese says, point-

ing out that a macaw, for instance, can live 80 to 100 years. Contrast that with a more traditional pet like a cat or a dog. Pets outlive their owners, or are given up by people who realize – too late – that a parrot or cockatoo isn’t a good fit. “People look at today and they don’t really look into the future,” she says. The organization takes in around 200 birds a year. “I’ve probably got six birds that have shown up in the past
two weeks.” Most end up at the home of Greyhaven’s bird adoption director in Tsawwassen, but others are fostered out by volunteers across the Lower Mainland. Founded in 1998, the society’s been without a home of its own for more than five years now, since leaving its former facility in the second floor of a plant nursery in Surrey, and is desperately looking for a new sanctuary.

“We want it to be a longterm thing. We need running water, heat, a place where people can get to and we can afford to pay the lease or rent, and the birds have to be safe,” she says. Christmas on Location It sounds like the perfect Christmas musical story line for local TV news junkies (and there are a few of us out there). Christmas on Location, Johnston Heights Church’s 22nd annual Christmas musical drama, tells the story of a TV reporter on assignment. He’s on location in Dickensburg, located a couple of hours north of Vancouver, to cover the annual Dickens Christmas Fest, on Christmas Eve. While there, he wrestles with finding joy and peace during the season, despite his own life’s hurts and challenges. The production features a cast, elaborate staging, plus adult and children’s choirs – accompanied by an orchestra. The family-friendly show is just the right thing to put audiences in the holiday spirit. Evening performances are Dec. 7 to 11, at 7:30 p.m., and there are matinees on Dec. 10 and 11, at 3 p.m.

Legendary laughs The legend of King Arthur gets a festive, funny revamp in Ellie King’s latest Christmas adaptation, The Sword in the Stone. It’s traditional British Panto, presented at the Surrey Arts Centre Dec. 16 to 31 with 3 p.m. matinees and 7 p.m. evening performances. King, the self-styled Queen of Panto, is the artistic director of the Royal Canadian Theatre Company. The well-loved tale gets a thorough makeover in this version, described as a magical, sparkling, hilarious musical.
The plot’s simple: will Arthur make it to Camelot and claim his crown? Not if his evil half-sister Morgana has anything to do about it. Fortunately, everyone lives happily ever after in this family-friendly version. Featuring the magical sorcerer, Merlin, lovely Guenivere and assorted gnomes, druids, trolls, shepherdesses and a dragon or two. It’s suitable entertainment for the whole family – boisterous and full of magic, music, merriment and mayhem. Call 604-501-5566 for more information, or visit www.rctheatreco.com.
