Healthy food too costly for the poor: report By Jeff Nagel A family on welfare would have to spend as much as 47 per cent of their household income to put healthy food on the table, according to a new report on the cost of nutritious food. The B.C. chapter of the Dieticians of Canada pegs the cost of providing a family of four with a nationally defined basket of nutritious food – basic staples and produce but no prepackaged meals – at an average of $868 per month in B.C. That monthly cost rises to $944 in the Vancouver Coastal health region, while it’s slightly lower at $851 in the Fraser Health region, according to the report Cost of Eating in British Columbia 2011. It would eat up 15 per cent of the $67,200 median income for a typical B.C. family of

come would pay at least a third of their income, the report found. That doesn’t leave enough to pay the typical cost of housing, it found, estimating many welfare families would face a $100 to $300 gap each month if they tried to buy what’s nutritious. “People end up using food banks and a lot of free food services,” said Kristen Yarker, executive director of the B.C. dieticians group. “They end up spending a lot of their time accessing those and lining up, which isn’t a great solution.” Others go without, she said, or opt for cheaper, less healthy food options. The report found the nutritious food basket price hasn’t changed since 2009, but is up nearly 40 per cent since 2001, when it stood at $626.
Meanwhile, Yarker noted, housing, gasoline, utilities and other competing costs have steadily climbed, leaving less in household budgets to devote to good food. “The problem is getting worse,” she said. “Income assistance and disability assistance rates have not kept up.” Poor nutrition can spell trouble for children in school, harm pregnancies for expectant mothers and hurt productivity of adult workers. Over the long term, the report said, poor food increases rates of diabetes and heart disease, ultimately shortening lives and costing the health care system more money. Dieticians, nutritionists and volunteers surveyed prices in grocery stores across B.C. See FOOD / Page 5

The month-long push to reduce distracted driving actually resulted in 4,449 tickets being handed out for the use of electronic devices alone, nearly double from the same time period in 2011 when 2,300 tickets were issued. “I am extremely disappointed in these results as it shows that drivers aren’t taking the dangers of using handheld devices while driving seriously, said Supt. Norm Gaumont, Officer in Charge of all traffic services in RCMP jurisdictions across the Lower Mainland. Distracted driving was a contributing factor to 27 fatalities in 2011, although down from the 46 in 2010, it is far too many from something that is completely avoidable, according to an RCMP release. Thousands of tickets were also given for speeding, not wearing or misusing a seatbelt and intersection infractions. Laws are in place to protect drivers, Gaumont said.

Local bands rock the Clova By Paul Fitzgerald The Clova Theatre presented two of Cloverdale’s up-andcoming artists over the weekend, Last Call Home and Ransom For the Captives. Both these bands and another band they invited, Sally’s Hot, from Port Moody, put on an amazing show Sunday Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. I have to give a lot of praise to these kids. The professionalism displayed and with the ability and talent shown, it showed me what today’s teens can accomplish. I am a resident of Cloverdale, a music lover and have the joy to be able to review shows as a passion. A recent disability has only allowed me to continue with this one passion of mine. I thought the whole event was very well done. All three of these bands have a future in performing. The covers and original songs played today were entertaining and sounded great. Doing the sound can be a challenge even for the most accomplished of artists. There were the occasional technical difficulties but the soundman and the musicians recovered quite quickly and the show never missed a beat. The concert opened with Last Call Home. This quartet from Cloverdale, who are students from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, performed a tight, well-produced act. They did not play any original songs today but their inspirations included some of my favourite bands. These were Green Day, White Stripes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Down with Webster. Vocalist and guitar player Sam Hobeyn is a natural frontman, also shared with Matt Friesen (on guitar and vocals) who split the singing between them. Carson Hoy on drums and Jordon O’Donovan on bass both played fantastic. Talking with the band after the show really showed me the spirit that these kids have today. Carson and Jordan have started a side business in production and DJ services. The motivation is impressive, to say the least.

The next act was from Port Moody; another teen band, Sallys Hot. These guys were not only talented in performing, they also played some awesome original work. They were very comedic on stage and had the audience in stitches sometimes with the funny comments and introductions to their songs. Two of their songs that really stood out were Bring me Down and Entitled. Front man Zak Johnson on guitar and vocals could be a comedian on the side. TJ Gibson on the drums had a powerful set, very impressive; Chris Macbeth on rhythm guitar and backing vocals shared the stage and one-liners with Zak through out the intros and they make a great team with their style. Robbie Blythe on bass was amazing. The technical abilities I saw just amazed me. These artists played very tight. Nice job guys. Very nice indeed. The headliner for this show was another band from Cloverdale, Ransom for the Captives. They are also Lord Tweedsmuir

fessionals. Then there are the two stellar guitarists Robert Crews and Nik Dragutinovich. They both played lead in my opinion. Nik’s acoustic playing was nice and the heavy, edgy rock riffs and fret work by both guitarists was spectacular. Well done guys. Your original work was great and the cover tunes were equally well done. An 11-song show is very good for a band as young as yours. The setlist included: Green Day’s Know Your Enemy, Sleep Now (by Paul Engels), Anthem, All To Myself (Marianas Trench cover), drum solo by Zach Birmingham, Clever Jam by Zach, Paul, Nik and Robert, False Crowns, Deck of Cards, Sing (My Chemical Romance cover), Just Sayin’ and Business as Usual. I have to say congratulations to The Clova Theatre for hosting such a great show. It is a great venue to showcase these young artists and the local media and the community needs to help promote our young talent whenever they can. I’m looking forward to seeing more acts at The Clova. – Paul Fitzgerald is a contributing writer for RockStar Weekly Magazine. www. rockstarweekly.com

students. This six-member band was talented and played with different styles of music from acoustic to real edgy rock. I liked their ability to change and not focus on one style alone. Lead singer Rochelle Paterson shared the spotlight with bass player/vocalist Paul Engels. Together the music flowed and when a challenge arose, when Rochelle’s cordless mic stopped working, they recovered and shared a microphone between them. Very professional. Paul Engels really performed well. I watched his style and the way he was able to play those technical pieces and still jump around the stage told me he is someone we are going to be seeing in the future. Keyboardist Lauren Dyck had great presence, a smile that would not quit. She played awesome and was truly enjoying it. When drummer Zach Birmingham did his drum solo, I flashed back to the ’70s when I saw artists such as Jerry Mercer of April Wine or early Neil Peart from Rush in 1977. His drum solo and their original Clever Jam that came next were the highlight of the show. These kids were not playing like teens, but like seasoned pro-

But unlike most of its counterparts in the region, Fraser Downs’ poker room features a small dining area where patrons can gather, a bar, and flat screen TVs for viewing sports. While not a huge revenue generator for the casino, Stratton noted the poker room represents an important asset for the overall facility, which already has slots, table games and live harness racing. “Having poker is part of the game,” he said. “What we find is we’ve got spouses or friends, and one will like table games and one will like slots. One will like poker and one will like horse racing, so
if you’re coming to a facility, the husband can sit down and play poker while the wife is upstairs having fun playing some slot machines or eating.” One new patron who will likely be spending time in the poker room at Fraser Downs is Bill Reid, a Texas Hold’Em fan who also happens to be the executive director of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce. Reid called Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino the “baby sister of the Great Canadian chain,” and said more needs to be done to promote the Cloverdale facility. The poker room, he said, is a critical addition to the facility, which has to compete with other casinos in the region, notably

By Jeff Nagel A 15-cent jump in Metro Vancouver gasoline prices has motorists stinging from a sudden new bout of pain at the pumps. And with the end of winter in sight, it could get even worse. Average prices in Metro Vancouver hit $1.42 per litre last week – within a cent of last year’s summer peak – before easing slightly. Gasoline had been relatively stable at around $1.27 per litre here from late November until Feb. 14. The only time prices have been significantly higher than now was in the summer of 2008, when Metro Vancouver pump prices briefly topped $1.50 a litre as crude oil prices spiked to $150 a barrel. Crude now is close to $110 a barrel, driven up in part by fears that Iran’s effort to build nuclear weapons could spark military conflict in the

Middle East. But petroleum industry analysts say the Feb. 18 fire at BP’s Cherry Point refinery near Blaine, Washington is a big factor driving prices up locally. Although the stillidled refinery doesn’t supply the Lower Mainland – gas here comes through Kinder Morgan’s pipeline from Alberta or is refined by Chevron in Burnaby – the reduced

supply south of the border has forced prices up there and is having a spillover effect on prices in B.C. If Lower Mainland prices didn’t rise in tandem, analysts say, gas here would flow south of the border, drawn by higher prices. Jason Toews, cofounder of price-tracking website gasbuddy.com, calls it a case of bad timing for the refinery fire, because more motorists always take to the road in spring and summer, and that will soon force prices higher still. “It’s terrible news for gas prices,” he said. “Summer driving season brings a lot more driving. Crude oil is already high. And then there’s the Iran factor if war was to break out.”
Toews said Lower Mainland drivers are unlikely to see significant price relief until September and he predicts gasoline will set new record highs here this spring. “I think we’re going to see a spike in May,” he said. “Vancouver will probably see average gas prices around $1.60, with some stations as high as $1.70.” As of Wednesday, Bellingham prices were US $4.05 per gallon, the equivalent of about $1.05 per litre. Gas prices in the U.S. city have climbed 12 per cent this month, compared to about 10 per cent in Metro Vancouver. There’s no estimate yet of when the Cherry Point refinery will return to full production.

Hawks have great weekend Valley West Hawks make it to Midget quarterfinals By Rick Kupchuk Everything fell into place for the Valley West Hawks on the final day of the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League schedule. The Hawks needed either a win Sunday, or a loss by the North Island Silvertips, to qualify for postseason play. And in the end, they got both. Valley West took both ends of a double header with the last-place South Island Thunderbirds last weekend at the Langley Sportsplex. After a 5-0 victory Saturday evening, the Hawks clinched sixth place when the Silvertips lost in Nanaimo to the Okanagan Rockets Sunday morning. No longer needing a win, the Hawks got one anyway, closing out their 40-game schedule with their 20th victory, a 3-1 triumph Sunday afternoon. Angus Redmond of Langley was in goal Saturday, earning a shutout while Cloverdale defenceman Cole Bevan, Justin Klimek and Daniell Lange of Langley, and Surrey forwards Ram Brar and Mitch Friesen scored the goals. Rhett Wilcox of Surrey and Langley defenceman Jordan Klimek collected two assists each. Friesen scored twice, including the winning goal with 10 minutes to play, in Sunday’s win. His 22nd tally of the season put the Hawks up 2-0, and after the Thunderbirds pulled to within one with two minutes left, Friesen found the empty net in the final minutes. Matthew Cox of White Rock opening the scoring five minutes into the second period. Luke Stripp of Surrey was in goal, turning aside all but one South Island shot. The Hawks, owners of a 20-17-3 (won-losttied) record, will play the third-place Vancouver Chiefs in a best-ofthree quarterfinal series on the weekend. Game one is at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at Planet Ice in Coquitlam, with a rematch Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Saturday night in the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex. A location for a third game, if necessary, has yet to be announced.

Gold, silver, bronze for local gymnasts By Jennifer Lang Surrey gymnasts scored big at the B.C. Winter Games in Vernon over the weekend. Hayley Biggin, a student at Martha Currie Elementary in Cloverdale, was a multiple medal winner. She earned gold, silver and bronze at the Greater Vernon 2012 B.C. Winter Games. The 10-year-old’s gold came for her performance on the beam, the silver in all-around competition, and she earned the bronze in floor. Her Zone 3 (Fraser Valley) teammate Allyson Armstrong, 9, won gold in vault, bronze on
the bars, and placed fourth in all-around competition. Jordanne Dunbar won gold on the uneven bars. Fraser Valley gymnasts (Biggin, Armstrong, Dunbar and Deandra McNaught) claimed gold in the B.C. Winter Games women’s team gymnastics competition. Squamish took silver. Deandra McNaught, Abby Strand, Madisen Whelband, also took part. Surrey’s Duncan Losin earned gold for gymnastics male team (with Aidan Page), and two bronzes: rings and parallel bars.

The skilled dogs live to about 12 years old, and are fed a balanced diet including fresh cooked meat, chicken and fish, pre-

OUTAOUAIS, QUEBEC: “Mush or ride?â€? Bruno hollers over the cacophony of 70 huskies jack-knifing off kennels frantically messaging, “Take me! Take me!â€? in the frosty air. A novice musher armed with a Nikon, a video camera and 11 experienced dogs is clearly a recipe for disaster. “Ride!â€? I holler back. My inner voice sneers, “Wimp.â€? Mushing, or not, dog sledding 101 is a pre-requisite at Chiens Traineaux Petite-Nation, one of the many winter activities across the river from Ottawa. The info is basic. The team’s up front. Sled and I are in the middle. Musher and brake bring up the rear. Huskies on the trail respond to stop, go, left, right and straight ahead – in French. No evidence of luxurious white Doctor Zhivago robes and wraps. Only a pair of $8 Value Village snow pants protects my posterior from sled wood ‌ which, I quickly discover, is damn hard doing 30 (feels like 60) over hill and dale in driving snow. But, that’s Canada, eh? With a command to Gypsy, the lead dog, and her daughter, I cling to sled and cameras as the snowy -10 degree landscape whizzes by. Behind me, Bruno directs the now-silent working dogs. Trails are groomed, but driving snow is making things interesting. Racing down a steep incline a novice musher frantically works to hang onto her team but lands face-first in a snow drift. “Whoa, Gypsy!â€? orders Bruno. “Get out. Stand hard on the brake. Don’t let it go!â€? he orders me. I picture me airborne cartoon-like gripping the sled with the Gypsy and her pals heading for the hills. I obey my order hoping Gypsy does, too. By the time everyone is sorted out I’ve managed to let two dogs get into an altercation and get a harness tangled. Bruno, who has been as musher since he was 13, restores
laughs, scooping snow into a wad of tissues and washing my kohlstreaked face. My last hope of qualifying for a chorus of Lara’s theme, and an Omar Sharif moment fades. No matter. We all agree the experience is magical and invigorating. Bruno tells me few Quebecers aren’t interested in dog sledding, but tourists love it. Score one for the tourists. This is a truly northern experience, a step back in time, a spiritual reaffirmation injection. We race from forest to vast snow-blanketed fields bathed in winter sun. Finally, I understand what being Canadian really feels like. Definitely cool. ■Ursula MaxwellLewis is a local writer and photographer who also discovered the charm of snowshoeing in Quebec.
