Kevin and Trish Lunder are seeking donations, volunteers.

By Jennifer Lang There are two new faces heading up the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program. Longtime Cloverdale residents Kevin and Trish Lunder have taken over for Scott Napier, who stepped down after leading the annual Yuletide food program for two years. He was one of several key people moving on this year. Trish Lunder knew it was time to make a larger commitment to the non-denominational program, which each December distributes food and children’s gifts to hundreds of Cloverdale residents in need. “I said to [my husband] Kevin, we can’t let this fall through,” Trish told the Reporter recently. “It’s too important. So many

families need help.” Now in its 20th year in operation, the program distributed 225 food hampers last year, assisting 325 adults and 200 children. It takes a combined effort of many local churches, elementary and secondary schools, businesses and service clubs, plus an army of volunteers to meet the need. Trish and Kevin Lunder are also members of Pacific Community Church, which acts as the nerve centre each December when the hampers are assembled. It’s a massive job involving dozens of volunteers working inside the 5337 180 Street church’s ample warehouse. Both Trish and Kevin have volunteered on the assembly line, building hampers

The Lunders are keen to sign up a list of volunteers to work shifts at the warehouse assembling hampers in the week or so before distribution day on Dec. 17, when recipients pick up their hampers, and those with children can also select toys and gifts for their kids. To streamline efforts, they plan to schedule volunteers between the hours of 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. when the assembly line is running. See DONATION DRIVE / Page 6

Tears of shock and dismay Granddaughter and niece of veteran brought to tears by climbers at 2010 Halloween parade To the editor: Re: “Halloween climbers ‘spit in the face’ of Canada’s veterans”, Oct. 27 I received my paper October 27 and the above article drove me to tears of shock and dismay. of this year’s Halloween Costume Parade, the problem was averted altogether. Surrey RCMP members from the Cloverdale/Port Kells district office erected barricades around the structure, and several eagleeyed auxiliary constables were stationed beside it during the Oct. 29 event, preventing anyone from climbing onto the War Memorial.

To the editor; To the editor;

I was surprised to find that the Muslim community in Surrey received a special “prayer room” in the new public library. Recently, the Surrey School Board would not allow a private Bible study to use a classroom after school hours, because they didn’t want to be seen as “endorsing” a religion. But now I learn that public funds are being used to facilitate a particular religion, with a prayer room being built specifically for Muslims “facing East to Mecca.” In Toronto, the schools have turned cafeterias into Muslim prayer rooms on Friday afternoons, replete with Muslim clerics coming to lead prayers. Are Canadian governments officially endorsing Islam now? Shaun Raap Cloverdale

President misunderstood To the editor; I attended the anti-[George] Bush rally in front of the Sheraton Hotel in Guildford. Sandwiched between the stoic faces of the RCMP detachment and fiery slogans of the crowd in front of them, I suddenly felt a tinge of sympathy for Mr. Bush, the man who has to carry the burden of his decisions for the rest of his life – not an easy task. No, he can’t just go for a simple walk in any public place without being ostracized and shouted at. He can’t cross many borders without certain legal risks. The French do not clamour to let him climb the Eiffel Tower and the Germans do not want to hear his advice. His meals require poison checks and his cars are preferably bullet proof. And the worst bit is having to appear with William Jefferson Clinton on the same stage in order to earn a living. Here is the guy who, except for minor ideological differences, did and would have done the same under the circumstances handed to Mr. Bush. He too served two terms. He too bombed Baghdad unprovoked. He too presided over a bubble – tech crash in his case. He too completed his term with a recession. He too under-

mined the economy by abolishing the Glass Steagall Act among other deregulatory initiatives. He too employed former Goldman Sachs executives in his administration. He too took money from Wall Street. And yet, Mr. Clinton is lionized and feted everywhere. He appears in public and people cheer. The French gladly lead him through the Louvre and the Pope hurries, tripping over his robe, to receive him. To top it all off, his speech fees at events like this Surrey Summit top the $500K mark while Mr. Bush can barely squeeze $150K. Mr. Clinton is ascending into the historic annals of presidential successes. Mr. Bush seems destined to scrape the bottom in the posterity rankings with the likes of Mr. Hoover and Mr. Nixon. Putting myself in Mr. Bush’s shoes or rather in his uncomfortably oversized suit, I feel empty, sad and disoriented. “Why?” I can’t stop asking. “Why do I lead this secluded, limited, misunderstood, armour-vested half life while Mr. Clinton lives his to the fullest? This is simply not fair. Does any of this have to do with that White House intern episode?” I ponder. Alex Posoukh Surrey, B.C.

Salish Sea protection Environmental groups are hailing the federal government’s decision to proceed with a national marine conservation area in the southern Strait of Georgia. It will cover 1,400 square kilometres of the Salish Sea, giving extra protection to marine life in the southern Gulf Islands and along southeast Vancouver Island. Federal environment minister Peter Kent unveiled the planned boundaries, citing the

region’s “magnificent diversity.” B.C. has agreed to turn over seabed rights to the area for federal protection. The conservation area has not yet been declared – Ottawa plans more consultation before finalizing the details of how it will be managed. Most recreation, business activity and some fishing will continue in the zone, but it must not endanger the ecosystem or species in it. Mining and offshore oil and gas exploration will be banned. Activists hope to tighten rules further to

outlaw activities like dredging and fish farms.

Canada line battle ends Canada’s top court has closed the door on compensation for business lost during construction of the Canada Line. The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear an appeal by Vancouver businesswoman Susan Heyes. Cambie Street merchants including Heyes said they were badly damaged by the decision to use cut-and-cover

construction rather than a more costly bored tunnel. She initially won a $600,000 judgment against the rapid transit line builders but then was stripped of the award in the B.C. Court of Appeal. The B.C. court found builders were authorized to use the cut-and-cover method, which allowed stations to be built closer to ground level and was faster, reducing the risk of the line failing to open for the 2010 Winter Olympics. – Black Press TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS Vancouver Bentall Tower Three Oakridge Centre Pacific Centre 2163 West 4th Ave. 2338 Cambie St. 925 West Georgia St. 689 Thurlow St. 1855 Burrard St. 3121 West Broadway 2748 Rupert St. 950 West Broadway 1707 Robson St. 1092 Kingsway 625 Howe St. 551 Robson St.

NOW ARRIVED

Watching a YouTube video of a baby punching a magazine vainly hoping to advance the pages made me smile. But, it saddened me, too. Even at such a young age I felt that if the child had been used to bedtime (book) stories, he (or she) would have differentiated between print and electronics. Despite the stampede to e-books, iPads and the fascinating devices we’re addicted to, the satisfaction and value of sharing a book with a child at the end of a busy day remains a valuable tool…and memory. The brilliance of the late Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and other e-gurus can’t be underestimated. But, would you agree that – in the end – high-powered business is at the root of these innovations? Print retains the identity of the owner, the writer, the friend, the parent who recommended it or passed it on. Books and physical works of art live and breathe. During a recent visit to New York with Hilary, my youngest daughter, we talked about her highpowered techno business world. This lead us to a discussion about my visit (with my less-techno son) to the Hereford Cathedral Chained Library on the Welsh-English borders where 1,500 books, including an 8th Century copy of the Four Gospels, Ursula Maxwell-Lewis are chained to solid wood shelves. Here was the reminder that, once upon a time, books were a rare and enormously valuable commodity. A major library constituted 150 books, generally of bound hand-transcribed irreplaceable volumes on law and religion. Librarians of the day invented the unique system of chains, rods, and clasps to protect, yet share, books. Citizens who could actually read slipped the leather-bound volumes from cases, sat and made notes, or more likely memorized text, before returning the treasured tomes to the shelves. Derek and I were amazed at the breadth of subjects, research and knowledge securely anchored in the climate controlled room. Contrast that with your Kobo. Near the library entrance is the Hereford Mappa Mundi, one of the most historically significant maps in existence. Drawn on a single calfskin, the 13th Century circular map shows Jerusalem at the centre of the known world. Originally designed for navigational purposes, it is now a fascinating interpretation of the times, and is undoubtedly a brilliant work of art crafted…when the world was flat… Do you think that, in a strange way, we’ve flattened our world again? Just a thought.

Another year AirCare vehicle emission tests will continue for at least one more year in the Lower Mainland. The provincial government still hasn’t made a final decision on whether to continue the program for several more years, so TransLink extended the contract with its provider until the end of 2012. A multi-agency review committee last year recommended renewing AirCare for at least another five years, citing the program’s continuing pollutioncontrol benefits. Those benefits aren’t as big as in the past, because new cars have become steadily cleaner, but the review warned scrapping the program would risk air quality. – Black Press

By Sheila Reynolds It’s been a long, long time coming, but Surrey will finally be able to build some new school space for its ever-growing number of students. The provincial government is providing $300 million in capital funding to be spent on 19 projects in seven school districts throughout B.C. Of the 19 projects, eight are in Surrey, totaling about $102 million. The money targets expansions to two high schools – Fraser Heights Secondary, which has 16 portables on site, and Panorama Ridge Secondary, where there are 14 portables. Also planned are two new elementary schools in the rapidly growing neighbourhoods of South Newton and East Clayton, as well as money to purchase land for four new schools – two elementary and two secondary – in the hopes of eventually relieving severe overcrowding at Earl Marriott Secondary (EMS) and Lord Tweedsmuir (LTS) Secondary. With no new school capital provided since 2005, about 250-plus portables littering local school grounds and EMS and LTS forced to adopt an extended timetable this year, the money couldn’t have come soon enough. Surrey Board of Education chairperson Laurae McNally was thrilled her board’s longtime plea for funds was finally heard. “It’s a wonderful day in the neighbourhood, she repeated, in reference to children’s entertainer Mr. Rogers. “This announcement addresses our most immediate needs. Some Surrey Civic Coalition (SCC) trustee candidates slammed Monday’s funding announcement at Hazelgrove Elementary, saying it’s simply not enough and Surrey requires six schools now and another eight in the next

five years just to keep pace with growth. “Surrey needs more than this, acknowledged Premier Christy Clark, saying it wouldn’t be the last funding announcement made. “There’s more to do, there’s no doubt about it. McNally remained grateful. “Considering we’re getting a third of what’s announced for the entire province, we’re very happy, especially in these tough economic times, she said. While pleased some funding is heading to Surrey, Bob Holmes, co-chair of Surrey’s District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC), was glad to hear Clark say more money would be coming. Even if construction were to start now, it takes at least three years to build a school. “Earl Marriott and Lord Tweedsmuir need a solution today, said Surrey Teachers’ Association president Denise Moffatt. “It’s high time Surrey’s needs got addressed. McNally said the district will move quickly, with staff immediately scouting potential school land sites and architects secured within a week or two. The Ad Hoc Committee for Surrey Schools called the announcement a step forward in strengthening Surrey’s public education infrastructure but added it will continue to focus on the issue of overcrowded schools and the capital funding formula. Other new and upgraded schools were announced for the Central Okanagan, Langley, Richmond, Vancouver, Sooke and the Conseil scolaire francophone. An additional $30 million has been committed by Surrey through development cost charges, while Sooke will provide $30 million from a school sale. – Black Press

Mild and rainy or cold and snowy?

Experts and the Farmer’s Almanac disagree on winter’s wrath

• School aged care with transportation available • Licensed childcare • Full & P/T rates • Games & Field Trips • Fun, safe & quality childcare • Kindergarten Preparation

By Jennifer Lang So we’re in for a cold one on B.C.’s south ‘wet’ coast, according to the usual experts – including Environment Canada, which says a moderate La Nina weather pattern will bring frigid temperatures and snow this winter. But what does the Old Farmer’s Almanac say? The annual compendium of weather forecasts, tide, astronomical and planting tables, holidays, eclipses, zodiac secrets etc., includes weather forecasts for five regions in Canada – including southern B.C. Turns out it may not be great news for Lower Mainland commuters who have purchased snow tires, according to the almanac, which claims to be 80 per cent accurate. The latest edition is predicting another mild, wet winter on the southwest coast, but cold and snowy throughout much of northern and interior B.C., with a mild, snowy winter of 2011-2012 in the southern Okanagan and Kootenays. Temperatures in the south will be slightly above normal, with more precipitation – but less snow – than in most years. April and May will be cooler and drier than normal, while summer will be warmer and drier than normal. Meanwhile, Environment Canada is calling for a 90-day average temperature over the winter to run one to two degrees colder than normal, increasing odds of big dumps of snow in Metro Vancouver.

Environment Canada’s forecast favours snow dumps.

The U.S. National Weather Service is also calling for another La Nina winter, with a strong chance of above-average precipitation across the Pacific Northwest. It’s the 30th anniversary of the Canadian edition of the almanac, founded in 1782 by Robert B. Thomas. The annual compendium contains a large number of astronomical calculations and a farmer’s calendar for every month of the year, plus a variety of new, useful and entertaining matter, it says, along with recipes, gardening tips, trivia and feature items. Doomsday watchers, take note: this year’s edition says the end of the Mayan calendar on Dec. 21, 2012 will not mark the end of the world. – With ďŹ les from Black Press

Mikei Red Reishi

Q

A

Red Reishi is said to be the “Heavenly Herb” from the Orient. What is it good for? Red Reishi contains polysaccharides and beta-glucans that are good for balancing immunity. It is an adaptogen that boosts energy, vitality, fertility and immunity. Through modulating the immunity, it helps many chronic conditions including stress, fatigue, hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, allergies, liver diseases, and even cancer. The Mikei brand of Red Reishi is cultivated and encapsulated in Japan by Nikkei, the pioneer in mushroom technology. It is cultivated on logs immersed in uncontaminated nutrient-rich soil. The capsule contains the aqueous extract concentrate instead of the pulverized powder. The extract contains much more active ingredients per capsule than the powder and absorption is far better with the extract. Furthermore, Mikei uses Red Reishi and not the less potent Black Reishi.

Q

Q A

Why should I consider Taekwondo for my children or myself?

What does it usually cost for a replacement keyboard in a laptop? My daughter spilled Koolaid on my laptop and the keys are sticking.? Depending on the age of the laptop between $75 to $100 and this includes labour replacement.

Training in Martial Arts is similar to the learning process as we go from early childhood to advanced education.

A

Early training builds a foundation with the emphasis on learning how to train effectively. Intermediate and advanced belt levels are meant to physically and mentally challenge the student. A large variety of new skills are encountered at this stage. Similar to Grade school, this is the time of acquiring much knowledge without the need for specialization. Skills of organization and discipline are developed to manage the new material.

Q A

I’ve heard hard drive prices are going up? Due to heavy flooding in Thailand most of the major hard drive manufacturers had to shut their plants which means the world wide supply of hard drives is going to be reduced by about 25%. This translates to dramatic increase in prices so if you’ve been contemplating changing your hard drive time is of the essence. Right now we can still get them fairly reasonably but a month from now who knows.

Q

Would you repair a computer or laptop if the value of the repair is over $200? Most likely you will never get any bill for $200 for a desktop however a laptop is a different story. Your smashed screen or your motherboard repair could cost up to $200 (and more if it’s a Mac) but you have to think of what you would have to pay for a new laptop in comparison your decision will be easier.

Training at Black Belt focuses on refining skills that were learned in the earlier training. This is where students form a unique style or identity as their expertise develops much like in College or University where graduates become specialized in their education. Intense focus and concentration are characteristics of this stage. At the Master Level the student now truly becomes the teacher. It is their knowledge and ability to pass on their expertise to others that is of greatest importance. The martial arts Master is constantly looking inward to reflect and improve so that they can make a difference in the world.

What is Game On Sports Academy? Game On is a new innovative way to introduce your child to sports and movement. As a working parent, one often cannot commit the time for practice or games. Game On transports from surrounding schools and to our centre where your child can learn hockey (including on ice and off ice instruction), skating, basketball, soccer, badminton, volleyball and more. We can help your child keep fit and find the sport they love. Game On is located next to Kid Artz Academy, which provides the same opportunities in the Arts (drawing, drama, photography, clay work, puppetry, etc). Please note we are not a daycare but do provide an excellent alternative. Call Jean McNabb to find out more about our programs at 604-576-5715

Q A

I am a salaried employee, are any of my expenses deductible for tax purposes?

Is it possible for a buyer to write more than 1 offer at a time on different properties to see which one will result in the best price, terms and conditions?

A

It is possible, but not advisable. In my opinion it is not completely ethical either. When an offer is written and accepted, there is an obligation on the part of the buyer to proceed in good faith on all the subjects that they have listed. If more than one offer is accepted on more than one property, the buyer will be bound to each of them. Also, the sellers of each property will be waiting with anticipation for the buyer to go through the procedure to remove subjects so that a sale can happen.

As a salaried employee, you may be able to claim a portion of all of the following employment expenses: • Automobile Expenses • Travelling Expenses • Salary Expenses • Home Office Expenses

• Office Rent • Supplies • Parking • Accounting and Legal Fees

In order to make the claim, you should maintain detailed records and your employer must provide you with a completed form T2200 “Declaration of Conditions of Employment” for the year. This form will certify what expenses you were required to incur in the course of your employment and any re-imbursements that you may have received. Please note that each of the above expense categories have their own particular rules with respect to calculating the allowable deduction. For help with calculating your specific employment expenses, please contact me at your convenience.

“For all your personal and corporate tax needs”

So, technically a buyer can write as many offers as they want but I would advise that they only write one at a time. Once an offer is accepted, the buyer must make every effort to complete on the purchase.
