By Jennifer Lang Dark, damp skies and blustery weather didn’t deter hundreds from paying their respects at this year’s Remembrance Day service in Cloverdale. A sizable crowed turned out for the Nov. 11 ceremony, which included a veterans’ parade to Surrey Museum Plaza, led by colour parties from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 (Cloverdale) and the Ladies’ Auxiliary. enough for everything to go off without a hitch. Local veterans were joined at the cenotaph by members of the Surrey RCMP, 746 Lightning Hawk Air Cadets Squadron, Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadet Corps 2812 Surrey, emergency services personnel and local Guides and Scouts along with crowds of spectators who gathered for the hour-long service. There were also two exciting flypasts of vintage aircraft in formation, soaring

overhead during the service, which was followed by the laying of wreaths by local veterans, dignitaries and residents. The Remembrance Day service also featured the RCMP’s E Division pipe band, prayers, a moment of silence and the Last Post. Veterans from Branch 6 then led the parade through the historic town centre back to the Cloverdale Legion, where service participants, friends and family gathered.

expansion that could link White Rock and Langley as well. The initial phase came up with 10 options using SkyTrain, LRT, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or combinations thereof on the King George Boulevard, Fraser Highway and 104 Avenue corridors at costs ranging from $650 million to more than $2 billion. TransLink has pledged to refine those options by early next year and the province would work with TransLink and local cities to make a final choice. Local cities aren’t just waiting for the TransLink process and consultations to play out. The City of Surrey has repeatedly touted the potential of light rail on the same corridors TransLink is studying, preparing video animations to depict how an LRT system in north Surrey would work. Fassbender said he has confidence in the TransLink process, adding the mayors weren’t trying to short-circuit it by directly lobbying the minister. How any rapid transit extension further in Surrey is funded will depend heavily on talks between the mayors and the province over new revenue sources for TransLink. Vancouver also wants a rapid transit extension down the Broadway corridor to UBC. TransLink has been working on a similar study to shortlist options for that line. – Black Press

99 birthday wishes To the editor; On November 11, 2011, my grandmother, Laura “Nana” Grantham turned 99. She is a long-time Cloverdale resident and member of the community. Nana moved to Dogwood Gardens in the early ‘70s and only moved out a couple of years ago. She spent much of that time at the side of her late husband Ralph. They were active members of the Precious Blood Parish. We shared much of this time together

as a family, with some travelling across the country to be a part of this special day. I am sure there are many of you who have had the pleasure to cross paths with Laura, and we are pleased to share this story with you so all of us can take a moment to smile for Nana. Happy birthday!

Veteran ‘too modest’ To the editor; Re: “Who should we remember?” Nov. 10 Louis, you are too modest. Please take this thank-you from all of us. Thank you for standing up for us in a time of need. For it is you and your brothers-inarms that give us the freedom of speech and education we as Canadians have today. We will always remember and we will let no one take our freedom in the future, whether it be a threatening force from another country or from our own shores. We will stand proud on the Eleventh of November for our great country of Canada and for the great men and women who fought and came back and who fought and were lost. Godspeed, Louis. I salute you.

Meditation room is for all library users Re: “What’s the policy?”, Nov. 3. In regards to the letter that suggests that the City Centre Library has a special prayer room dedicated to the Muslim community, I would like to correct any misunderstanding. The room is a meditation room and is used for a number of purposes. It can be used for quiet contemplation and prayer, but also for taking a personal cell phone call or be used by a parent wanting to calm an upset child. The meditation room is open to everyone and is not restricted to any one particular use or religion.

Food drive takes it all literally By Jennifer Lang Kwantlen University’s “Stuff the Bus campaign kicked off with a food drive – literally – for a local cause that helps needy Cloverdale residents each December. Kwantlen employee and Cloverdale resident Tally Wade, coordinator of the public safety communications program, is also on the university’s United Way committee. The initiative has been a resounding success, especially at the Cloverdale campus, where classes compete against each other for a pizza lunch donated by the Dean’s office, Wade says. Kwantlen introduced a new shuttle bus service between campuses this year. To draw attention to this – and to the annual United Way employee drive, the university launched its Stuff the Bus Campaign. The goal is to load the bus with non-perishable food and hygiene items. After reading a recent article in The Reporter, organizers decided to hold a one-day food drive for the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program, a non-denominational, volunteer-driven Yuletide program that assists local families and individuals in need. On Nov. 4, Kwantlen shuttled the bus by each of its four campuses – Cloverdale, Langley, Richmond and Surrey – picking up food donations. The donations were then dropped off at Pacific Community Church, nerve centre of the hamper assembly line.

Winning ways A guest appearance at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino by Canada’s leading standardbred driver on Remembrance Day resulted in big winnings for the Royal Canadian Legion. Scott Zeron, who won four harness races at the B.C. Breeders Classic Day Nov. 11, donated $2,200 in winnings to the Legion, a sum matched by Fraser Downs management.

The 22-year-old Ontarian will also be donating a portion of his winnings at upcoming December races at Woodbine. “Not only did Scott donate his driving earnings at Fraser Downs to the Royal Canadian Legion, says Jackson Wittup, director of racing. “He also gave up 12 drives from a very lucrative Woodbine card on Friday night. It tells you what this young man is all about.

She’s making a point Type I diabetic determined to build more awareness By Jennifer Lang Caitlin MacDonald is getting tired of people telling her she’s diabetic because she ate too much sugar. “A lot of people are really ignorant about it, says MacDonald, a 2011 Clayton Heights Secondary grad who was diagnosed with Type I diabetes when she was 11. Once, in Grade 7, a teacher refused to let her inside the school after classes had ended, even though her blood sugar was dangerously low, and she needed to retrieve a bottle of juice from her locker. The friend who helped her raise a ruckus ended up suspended for a day. Another time MacDonald was kicked out of class by a teacher who mistook her lifesustaining insulin pump for a cell phone. People have even thought she was contagious. “They just don’t understand. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease that attacks the beta cells in the pancreas, preventing the production of insulin, which converts sugar into energy in the body. Type I diabetics like MacDonald rely on insulin injections or insulin pumps instead.

In an age when good, e a s y - t o - u n d e r s t an d medical information is available with the click of a mouse button, it seems incredible that people don’t know the facts when it comes to such a common disease. Q A

What is the Reggio Philosophy?

Founded by Loris Malaguzzi, the approach requires children to be seen as competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative, and inventive and possess a desire to interact and communicate with others. Teachers follow the children’s interests and do not provide focused instruction in reading and writing. Reggio approach has a strong belief that children learn through interaction with others, including parents, staff and peers in a friendly learning environment. The Reggio approach calls for the integration of the graphic arts as tools for cognitive, linguistic, and social development. Documentation of children’s work in progress is viewed as an important tool in the learning process for children, teachers, and parents. Projects are child-centered, following their interest, returning again and again to add new insights. The role of the teacher isto be that of a learner alongside the children serving as a guide, as she/he lends expertise to children. Programs in Reggio are family centered. The Reggio Emilia approach helps children to acquire skills of critical thinking and collaboration. At Kidzrock we believe in giving your children the best childcare/preschool experience imaginable.

Q

When does a denture need replacing?

A

Dentures should be replaced every five years. Wearing dentures for more than five years without having them checked could be harmful to your health. Here are some of the signs indicating that your prosthesis should be checked: • Sore and irritated tissues • Problems with chewing certain foods • Thinning lips, sagging mouth, a change in facial features • Loose, falling out when speaking or laughing • Has discolored or has an odor • Headaches, neck, or ear pain • Your partial is kept in your pocket most of the time. When was the last time you saw your denturist?

Cartilage Injury I have been diagnosed with a cartilage injury of my knee. Can conservative treatment help?

Q

Meniscus/cartilage has a poor blood supply. Small peripheral tears that do not transgress the whole cartilage can heal. If you have a full blown tear the chances of healing completely are poor. The degree and type of tear can be determined by a MRI. It is important to correct any biomechanical abnormalities, to prevent further degenerative changes and to enhance stability and mobility of the knee either pre or post surgery.

A

3) Identify and correct any joint dysfunction in the lower back, pelvis, hip, knee and ankle joint e.g. leg length inequalities. 4) Physiotherapy modalities that stimulate healing include laser, electromagnetic therapy, ultrasound and interferential. I would suggest a biomechanical assessment and a customized kinesiology rehabilitation program. Your response to the program would determine whether conservative measures would help.

a property is not going to be on the Multiple Listing ServiceŽ. The listing is publicized by advertising and the sign alone, without the benefit of the computer. At times, the seller will prefer an exclusive listing in the belief that there will be fewer “lookers, rather than buyers. Actually that is not the case. An exclusive listing is often overlooked by REALTORSŽ working with buyers, because the first place they look is on the MLSŽ site. The more people who know about a property, the greater the chance of a larger number of serious buyers viewing the property and making offers until the acceptable price and terms are reached.

Having difďŹ culty starting your vehicle? A cold engine is a harder engine to get started. A cold engine needs more battery power to start. If your battery is older think about getting it tested and serviced if it is producing corrosion on the terminals. When the weather gets really cold think about using a block heater. It can also save money on gas. Keep your fuel tank at least half full. It limits condensation and the potential for freeze up. Watch your cooling system. You should have a 50-50 mix of coolant to water. If your coolant is low, your heater is the ďŹ rst thing to suffer. Take time to think about an emergency kit suited towards your winter commute – hat, gloves, blanket, scrapper, cell phone, emergency candle, food, etc.

Leopards pounce

Metaphysical Books & Gifts

On the field, timing can be everything. The Cloverdale Bantam Leopards managed to pounce on the advancing line of the Ridge Meadow Nights during the final minute of a home game over the weekend, resulting in a 22-20 victory. The Nov. 13 showdown was the final game of the regular season for the team, part of the Cloverdale Community Football Association, which plays in the Lower Mainland Football League. Highlights: It was an exciting back and forth game. K.D. Duhlar started the scoring on a 65-yard-line punt return. Christian MacMillan had the second touchdown on a 50yard passing play, and Anoop Nahal capped off the scoring with a 30-yard completion after the Leopards marched the ball down the field with their hurry up offence. The Leopards held the advancing Nights in the final minute to secure victory. Standouts were quarterback Gurjot Bains, with his best game of the year, David Dinbandhu, who had some key blocks and tackles, MacMillan, who played receiver, backup QB and running back, and Jake Bracey, who stepped up at centre.

disease can be.” In honour of Diabetes Awareness Month, the 18-year-old has pledged to complete a different awareness activity each day of November, from giving away balloons and brochures to collecting donations at work for diabetes research. On Monday, she and a few friends planned to paint themselves in blue (the diabetes colour) and go around quizzing people about diabetes. It’s all part of a selfstyled campaign she hopes will help set the record straight when it comes to the facts about Type 1 diabetes. She’s also taken her campaign to YouTube, where she’s launched her own channel (YouTube. com/DiabeticDreams) and posted several informative videos about Type I diabetes in the hopes of reaching a wider audience with her message. Closer to home, she’s completed a guidebook for students, parents and teachers she’s at-

tempting to have approved as a resource for Surrey schools. “It covers everything from sports teams and what you should have in your locker, to what teachers should notice,” she says. It’s a more detailed version of an easy-toread pamphlet she wrote and started circulating last year called How To Survive High School With Type 1 Diabetes. The guide’s tips and reminders were aimed at making the transition from elementary to high school easier for students and parents.

It contains helpful, sensitive advice, like reminding students not to leave the classroom alone when they’re feeling “low”, or hypoglycemic, and for parents to respect their child’s desire for more independence. When she showed it to her teachers at Clayton Heights Secondary, they encouraged her to take it a step further. So she added more details, fleshing it out to about 1,500 words. She says having Type 1 diabetes has made her a stronger person, and it certainly hasn’t stopped

her from doing all of the things she wants to accomplish. “With diabetes, you can have a completely healthy life if you manage it properly.” These days, she’s a busy student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University who juggles her studies with her job at Montana’s Cookhouse. She hopes to eventually earn a PhD in psychology, and one day work as a hospital counsellor working with newly-diagnosed patients. A talented athlete, she was captain of lacrosse

and ruby teams, and played soccer as well. “Diabetes doesn’t restrict you from doing anything like that,” she says. It’s a message she’s determined to share. “If I can bring a book that is easy to read and is straightforward and takes five minutes to flip through or it’s watching a threeminute video that will help, then I’m going to do that,” she says. “I wouldn’t want someone to go through what I went through.”
